Aug 6: The Hellhound’s Crew
The 19 sailors who crew the Hellhound are sea-cursed, a type of undead bound to a sailing vessel. They cannot leave their ship—if they set foot elsewhere or even fall into the sea, they immediately vanish, only to reappear on the main deck in 1d10 days. (The crew consider doing this to be rude and lazy, a way to shirk one’s duties.) Nineteen is a small crew for a ship the Hellhound’s size, but being undead who can work without rest somewhat makes up for it.
The Hellhound was Barnabas Brimstone’s ship 200-odd years ago, and the crew was transformed upon his death and have been sailing the Sunless Sea since then. They believe (correctly) that a specific piece of treasure buried on Tombstone Island can free them, but finding a specific island is no simple task in this sea, and none of the mortals they’ve enlisted to help them since then have survived retrieving it.
Despite not being good people, the crew are helpful and hospitable to mortals they take aboard, because they understand that such people are their only chance to break their curse and move on to a real afterlife. Any crewmate who behaves contrary to this—say, by stealing from a passenger—is heavily punished.
Notable People Aboard the Hellhound
Cpt. Jawali Ghiraa (M, fire genasi): Charcoal skin, shoulder-length hair and thin mustache made of blue flames. Brimstone’s former quartermaster, took over after Brimstone’s death. Cultured and well-spoken for a pirate. Inherently smarmy, even when he’s not trying to be. Eternal believer in the crew’s chances for freedom.
Eddington “Ed” Nergru (M, half-orc): Black half-shaved hair, lots of piercings, always fidgeting with something. Ghiraa’s first mate and gunner (his original job). A know-it-all and braggart, especially with mortals. Has a lot of opinions about how to find the treasure for someone who can’t leave the ship.
Gitrude “Rusty” Rustfall (F, dwarf): Gray-brown beard and close-cropped hair, peg left leg made from the ship’s own wood. Cook-turned-quartermaster. Glum, cranky, a real downer. Always the first to assume that a plan will fail. Likes to show new mortals all the clothes and trinkets from all their predecessors who didn’t make it back to claim them.
Drur The Putrid (M, orc): Bald, wears as little as possible except for a necklace of bird bones, mushrooms occasionally sprout from his skin. A druid and healer, mostly works as a seaman now but can still make gross but effective potions and salves. Nasty sense of humor, prone to practical jokes.
Mismaia (F, tiefling): Purple skin, ram horns barely visible in curly black hair, large garnet in place of left eye. Brimstone’s former first mate, tried to take over after his death but lost out to Ghiraa. Now a midshipman. The two genuinely hate each other, and she always disagrees with him on principle. Rest of crew treats her insubordination like a silly joke; she hates being patronized like that too.

BARMM exec loses battle with brain tumor; dies in Zambo hospital
#PHnews: BARMM exec loses battle with brain tumor; dies in Zambo hospital
ZAMBOANGA CITY--The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is mourning the passing of Deputy Chief Minister Abdul Sahrin, described by Chief Minister Ahod Balawag Ebrahim as a “dear friend and a brother” in the Bangsamoro struggle. Ebrahim (Al Hadj Murad) said Sahrin, 70, died midnight Wednesday at the Zamboanga Peninsula Medical Center in Barangay Putik after a month-long battle with brain tumor. Also known as “Hassan Jawali” and “Cong” to his comrades, Sarin served as a member of the 75-seat Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) parliament. Ebrahim said Sahrin, the Moro National Liberation Front’s (MNLF) secretary-general, “was a key figure in fighting for our right to self-determination and working towards our shared vision of a peaceful and progressive Bangsamoro.” “Brother Cong has been essential in helping us reach the island provinces and introduce our cause in building moral governance and a bureaucracy that can truly address the plight of the Bangsamoro people,” Ebrahim said. “We will honor his life and legacy by making sure that our work for the people continues with the highest standard,” he said. “We join his bereaved family, friends, comrades, and followers in grieving his loss." The BARMM government has yet to announce Sahrin's replacement as BARMM deputy chief minister. “We will know when parliament convenes next week,” said Amir Mawallil, a colleague of Sahrin in the BTA. Outbreak of bird flu in Himachal, Kerala, Rajasthan
Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and Rajasthan on Monday confirmed bird flu to be the cause of death of hundreds of birds even as several other states, including Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand, sounded alerts on the disease. The death of migratory birds — 2,300 till Monday — in the Pong Dam reservoir area in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh was due to avian influenza, chief conservator of forests, Dharamshala, Upasana Patiyal, confirmed on Monday. As a precaution, the state government has banned the sale, purchase and slaughter of poultry in Fatehpur, Dehra, Jawali and Indora sub-divisions of Kangra district. Export of poultry products and fish has also been stopped. The animal husbandry department staff has been directed to constitute rapid response teams to tackle the spread of the disease. Kerala’s minister for forests, wildlife and animal husbandry K Raju said bird flu was reported in Kottayam and Alappuzha and that 12,000 ducks were killed by the disease. Authorities have been instructed to cull all birds within a one-kilometre radius of the areas in which it was reported. This would include all types of poultry and ornamental birds. Raju said 36,000 birds will have to be culled to avoid further spread of the disease.
This is the third outbreak of bird flu in Alappuzha over the past seven years. “As per the estimate of the animal husbandry department, 34,602 birds (mainly ducks) need to be culled in Kuttanad and it will be completed in three days. These include 5,975 birds in Nedumudi, 11,250 birds in Thakazhi, 4,627 birds in Pallippad and 12,750 birds in Karuvatta,” collector A Alexander said. Also, the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal has confirmed that the death of crows in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar was due to bird flu. The toll, mostly crows, reached 522 on Monday. Director, animal husbandry, Virendra Singh, said, “The highest number of crow deaths, 36, was reported in Jaipur. Till January 4, 391 crows have died across the state.” Other than the state capital, two new cases were reported in Jhalawar, where crow deaths were witnessed for the first time. Deaths were reported in Kota (12), Baran (12) and Bikaner (11). In Dausa district, six deaths were recorded — two crows and four herons. Also, the death of one heron and four crows was reported in Jodhpur. “Migratory birds are the suspected to be source of this virus,” a senior animal husbandry official said. A senior health department official told TOI, “Bird flu may transmit from birds to humans. We have directed our officials to keep a close eye on poultry farms and other areas where birds are inhabited.” Fears of bird flu after the death of 53 birds at Bantva in Gujarat’s Junagadh, majority of them lapwings, were allayed by forest department officials who said postmortems have revealed that the birds may have died of poisoning. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh too issued an alert over an H5N8 avian influenza outbreak, which has killed 160 crows and at least two herons in Indore in the past one week. Animal husbandry department officials in every district have been asked to be on the alert and follow SOPs to check the spread of the virus. So far, there is no evidence of transmission to poultry. In the wake of the bird deaths in Himachal, the animal husbandry department in Punjab’s Pathankot district has begun taking preventive measures to prevent the spread of any possible infection among poultry birds from migratory birds. Deputy director (animal husbandry), Pathankot, Ramesh Kohli, said department staff have begun collecting bird droppings and water samples from poultry farms which would be sent to Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Jalandhar, to rule out any infection. There are more than 60 major poultry farms with a bird population of more than 50 to 60 lakhs in Pathankot’s Narot Jaimal Singh, Dhar, Pathankot and Sujanpur blocks, he added. Mystery shrouds deaths of chicken as the cause remains inconclusive. In the past one week, 20 Barwala-based poultry farms have faced deaths 1.5 lakh birds. The samples picked up by the animal husbandry and dairy department have been sent for forensic examination to RDDL and the report is awaited, said deputy director Anil Banwala. “As of now, we hope that no such deadly disease is the cause. If there had been any disease then the birds would have died within hours but here birds are dying from the past one week,” Banwala said. Poultry farm owners have claimed that the birds have died due to drop in temperature and this is an annual affair when temperature drops below 5ºC. Jharkhand, too, sounded an alert across all 24 districts, asking officials to keep a close watch and make necessary arrangements to tackle any situation that may arise.

Type : Forest Fort
Fort range : Mahabaleshwar
Height : 1171 meters (3614 feet)
Base village : Bamnoli (near Satara)
Difficulty : Medium
Endurance Level : Medium to High
Distance from Pune : 140 km
District : Satara
Situated in dense forests surrounded by river Koyna is the fort of Vasota, which according to the ‘Dnyaneshwari’ means a resting place. This fort is also known by the name of Vyaghragad. Vasota fort is situated on the banks of the Shivsagar dam. Met Indavali is the base village of Vasota. From here the forest path leads us to the top of Vasota. It takes two to three hours to reach the top. It is a gradual climb and through dense forest. It is an ideal trek in winter and summer. The view from top is breath-taking. The fort is covered by a thick reserved forest. On the east side are the backwaters of Shivsagar dam. After that one can see the mountain range of Kas Mahabaleshwar. Steep falls or cliffs on the west side of the fort and the mountain ranges add to the beauty of the place. Nageshwar cave is visible on the north of the fort. It is a two hours’ trek from Vasota.

History:
This fort got its name from Vashishta rishi. This is enough to prove that this fort has a long history. This fort is situated at banks of Koyana River and is surrounded by thick forest and deep valleys and due to its strategic location later this Mountain was fortified.
This fort got its importance during Shivaji Maharaj’s Jawali raid. Recent study shows that this fort was not won by Shivaji Maharaj during his Jawali raid. When Shivaji Maharaj defeated Chandrarao More his troops took Javli and other forts in the Konkan region excluding Vasota. But on June 6, 1660 Vasota became a part of Swarajya, it was a period when Shivaji was trapped in Panhalgad.
Marathas found 26,000 rupees on the fort. After Shivaji and Sambhaji Maharaj era the fort was under Pant Pratinidhi control. In 1706, Tai Telini brought the fort under her control. The very next year Peshwa conquered the fort. In 1818 along with other forts of Marathas, this fort came under British control and hence got destroyed.

This fort was mainly used as Military Station or as resting place for Soldiers. Due to its difficult location and accessibility this fort was also used for storing wealth of Swarajya.
On Sajjangad which is in Satara there is a letter stating that when Auranzeb attacked Sajjangad , people from surrounding region went to Vasota fort for their safety. People were aware that it is impossible for any outsider to win this mighty fort which is well protected by Sahyadri itself.
Fort Vasota comes under Tiger Project (forest department). We have to take prior permissions from the forest authorities and can be done on the same day as you plan your trek from Bamnoli. There are two forts actually. The old Vasota and new Vasota. The old Vasota is not easily accessible. We were supposed to hike new Vasota.
How to reach:
There are two major routes to reach to Vasota fort. First rout goes from Bamnoli village which is in Satara. Second route goes from Choravane village which is in Chiplun. As per the Forest departments rule we cannot stay at Vasota fort as well as on Nageshwar.
#gallery-0-53 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-53 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-53 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-53 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
From Bamnoli:
Bamnoli is in Satara District and is about 30 kms from Satara city. This is the easiest route to reach to the top of Vasota. As the Vasota and Nageshwar both falls under Sahyadri Tiger reserve you need to take permission from forest office of Bamnoli to enter the Sahyadri Tiger reserve. On this route, we have to cross Koyana Dam backwater which is called as Shivsagar Lake. From Bamnoli we need to travel to Met Indavali by Boat which charges around 3,200/- for 12 people. The boat takes around 1.5 hrs to reach Met Indavali. Met indavali is the base of Vasota and Nageshwar. In Met Indavali there is another Forest office. Take a guide from here if needed.
Bamnoli Forest office opens at 8.00 am so the first ferry boat from Bamnoli to Met Indavali starts at 8.30 a.m.
From Choravane:
Choravane is in kokan region. You need to go to Chipalun >> Choravane. From Choravane it takes around 5-6 hrs to reach Vasota. This route is damn tiring. And there is no water on the way so one has to carry his own supply.
The Trek:
#gallery-0-54 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-54 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-54 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-54 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
We, a group of 28 trekkers started from Pune on a Saturday night at 11.30 pm by a private bus to Bamnoli village. Making the night journey and reaching early at Bamnoli village would help us to get a complete day for completing the Vasota Fort trek comfortably. Since it was March and the summer has just started, the drive itself was amazing with open highway and sky full of stars. Sometimes dozing a bit in the bus and sometime just looking outside the window, our time passed quickly and we reached our destination early in the morning at 3.30 am. After a travel of 4 hours, we reached Bamnoli village. Bamnoli is a small village where passes are issued to reach the base of the jungle by the forest department. We had plenty of time and a quick power nap was advisable to shrug off the sleepless tiredness. So everybody hurried towards Bhairav Mandir, the place where some people can sleep for a while. The sleep took over quickly on everybody and we got up at 6.30 am again to prepare ourselves for the early trek to Vasota fort. We had hot Pohe and Chai for breakfast and after a quick breakfast, a look in our backpack for correctness of things was carried out. Everybody was excited for the day ahead and waited for the trek leader’s instructions. A quick introduction round was carried out followed by trek leader’s instructions for the trek.
#gallery-0-55 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-55 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-55 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-55 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Finally, it was time for our boats to arrive and there came our two lovely boats. The scenic beauty of Sukhsagar lake water was amazing. So many boats waiting for the trekkers to board. The faint looking mountain in the background is Madhu-Makrand Gad and there is Tapola (famously called the mini Kashmir of the west is a rustic hamlet with a magnificent lake – Shivsagar. on the other side). We boarded the boat with 14 persons (maximum capacity) in each boat and our boat journey to Vasota started with the picturesque setting all around. Everybody was enjoying the boat journey with spectacular views all around. There is a dense forest around lake inhabiting many wild animals. Many of these animals come to drink water in this lake. The boat ride was amazing, with clouds and sun playing hide and seek, it formed beautiful patterns on water. Excitement to reach the jungle was growing with every passing minute. After boat journey of more than an hour, finally Vasota became visible. Almost 75% of Vasota is covered by dense forest and only 25% is exposed. Views all around were so beautiful and everybody was clicking pictures.
#gallery-0-56 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-56 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-56 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-56 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
