anything by Jason Isbell,
this might fit the mood:
youtube
... got lucky when I finished school Lost three fingers to a faulty tool Settled out of court, I'm no one's fool You probably knew
There's plenty left to make a getaway I've spent enough nights in the bluegrass state We could go somewhere where people stay up late Or just somewhere new ...
youtube
There's no such thing as someone else's war Your creature comforts aren't the only things worth fighting for You're still breathing, it's not too late We're all carrying one big burden, sharing one fate
... I still have faith, but I don't know why Maybe it's the fire in my little girl's eyes Maybe it's the fire in my little girl's eyes
Actually any song on either of those two albums is worth listening to.
Not just for @helloliriels
for anyone who wants to hear serious grownup themes with a bit of hope for the future.
Love ya!
Going to lose my everloving mind ...
Anyone have song recs?? Anything.

Hideduo Week Day 4 Drabble Sequence !
Hello hello hello this is my quadruple drabble for the 4th day of @hideduoweek !! I used the prompts angst and running to make a Fit-centric work with mentions of Pac and Ramón :D Title is a song by Jason Isbell that , while it doesn't fit perfectly 100%, has some good Fit vibes
cover me up | feyscape | M | Slash | Day 4 | Angst & Running
Fit keeps his mouth shut and looks the other way. He sharpens his wit with books from the bases he raids and he sharpens his blades with slick rocks found by the rolling rivers. His travels have led him to the ends of this world. It feels smaller with every passing day and with every new flying hack, each faster than the previous. Newfakes pop up everywhere, like spreading weeds, and while incursions are a fun get together with all the oldies and a good way to stretch his legs, he prefers getting his meat from game in sparse forests.
---
One day he fells a deer. It's a feast fit for a king, but in it, he sees rations for weeks to come. He's skinning it when a white figure appears in his peripheral. It makes him drop the deer in favor of his sword, and he stands guard like a lioness defending its meal until the figure slinks away.
Fit's heart sinks when a branch snaps right behind him. He turns around to the person from earlier, and immediately raises his weapons in defense. He considers running. The stranger has a knife at his throat before he's able to.
---
He runs from desolate lands to greener pastures, sprinting with all the energy saved up of years lived in routine and in suppression. On the island, he finds a world more expansive than his imagination would have permitted him to dream. He finds attachments. He finds a place to rest his legs.
Looking up at a family portrait one day, he decides fatherhood suits him. Having responsibility for someone other than himself has made him kick off the running shoes. They're still by the door, ready to put on in case they're needed, but as days pass, they collect dust.
---
The thought of Pac's brown eyes keeps him awake. The need to get back to Ramón, to tell him bedtime stories and teach him how to run, keeps him fighting.
He blinks one day, after too many days of being here to count, and he finds himself in a cave in the wasteland. So much for that opportunity. On the ground, a half-butchered deer lies rotting.
He's not a proud man, but it gives him enough energy that his legs start working again. There's no time to waste, he's gotta pick up his pace. His family is waiting for him.

Learning How To Bend Gary Allan
“I’m still learning how to pray,/Trying hard not to stray,/Try to see things your way./I’m still learning how to pray./I’m still learning how to trust,/It's so hard to open up./And I'd do anything for us./I’m still learning how to trust.”

Troubadour George Strait

Another one because WHY NOT, but also because you haven't answered your text and I've been left alone with my new favorite playlist.
Pick one song from each that stands out for you & why? It could just be your favorite. A melody. A lyric. The music. Whatever makes it special to you. ♥️
Sad Cowboy Version
-Zach Bryan
-Tyler Childers
-Jason Isbell
-Shane Smith
Ohhhh how I adore this list. Do any of them have a bad song? Absolutely not.
1. Zach Bryan- Sweet DeAnn. Every single time I really listen to those lyrics, I sob ugly. It’s basically a message to his late mom. ♥️
“Sweet DeAnn, I miss you so
And you go wherever I go
The reasons I don't know
But I'll sing 'em loud and slow
So you can hear me from the Heavens
And you can call my thunder down
I miss havin' you around
But in my heart, you're always found” 😢😭
2. Tyler Childers- Shake the Frost- that beginning. The music The lyrics you can just feel the love. 🥰 it’s perfect.
3. Jason Isbell- White Man’s World- it’s a good song not my favorite by him but the lyrics. The way they address race & privilege just acknowledging the existence of it and ending on that hopeful “fire in my baby girl’s eyes”. It’s beautiful. And the line referencing Amanda Shires:
“Momma wants to change that Nashville sound
But they’re never gonna let her” 😢
4. Shane Smith & the Saints- The Mountain. I absolutely love this song. The imagery of the lyrics but that beginning. Just their voices. The harmonies. So good. Then the violin quickly followed by the drums kick in and the song is off running. I love it. ♥️
And tell me more about this new favorite playlist! 😂♥️

For @electric-rabbits I don't usually do these things but I like you. :) Last song: White Man's World by Jason Isbell
Currently watching: Sister Boniface. British cozy mysteries are comfort TV for me and I've got some stress right now because of a harassment situation (not me being harassed, I'm having to push for it to be handled properly) in a org I volunteer for. So I've been watching a lot of comfort TV. :)
Currently reading: Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. Second book in the series. It's sorta mind-bending but I really ended up enjoying the first book, so I'm working my way through the second.
Current obsession: New friends group that seems to actually want to spend time with me and to make the time to be around me. This is new. :)

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit Live Preview: 3/14-3/15, Rialto Square Theatre, Joliet
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Over the past few years, Jason Isbell’s had a lot of time to think. Pandemic and lockdown-induced isolation made us all spend a bit more time between our ears, and for Isbell, it was his experience on set for Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon that yielded even more alone time. These spaces in between catalyzed the creation of Weathervanes, Isbell’s new album with the 400 Unit out in June via Southeastern/Thirty Tigers. Like Isbell’s best records, Weathervanes tackles many areas of life, from getting older and grappling with regret and depression to existing in an increasingly fraught and vulnerable world. What makes it succeed most is the extent to which he relied on his collaborators to make it, purportedly inspired by watching none other than Scorsese seek out the opinions of others while filming Flower Moon.
If there’s a line on Weathervanes that sets up the rest of the record, it comes on opener and lead single “Death Wish”, the only taste of the album so far released. On the song, about being in love with a depressed person, Isbell reflects, “The night was young once, we were the wild ones / Before we had to pay attention to the violence.” As a parent, a man, a white man, and a Southern man, Isbell feels the weight of the world, his voice uncharacteristically shaking, trying to explain that world and survive in it without shirking the performance of grappling with his complicity in the bad parts and responsibility to make it better. Morgan O’Shaughnessey’s lush strings contrast Chad Gamble’s clattering drums, mirroring Isbell’s frame of mind. The song directly foreshadows a tune like the dark “Save the World”, which sees the narrator learning about a school shooting, trying to balance his own mourning with his desire to keep his children safe. The most pointedly ruminative is “Cast Iron Skillet”, where Isbell uses the titular object as a metaphor for Southern tradition. “Don’t wash a cast iron skillet / Don’t drink and drive--you’ll spill it,” he sings, toying with the listener’s expectations in order to turn upside down a bygone nostalgia of a South that never was, condemning racism and toxic masculinity then and now.
Elsewhere on Weathervanes, there are Isbell staples: Southern rockers (“When We Were Close”, the basically live-to-tape “This Ain’t It”), soaring epics (“King of Oklahoma”, proggy closer “Miles), languid swayers (“Vestavia Hills”), and quotables galore (my favorite: “I’m running out of jokes / If you insist on being lonely, can you leave a couple smokes?”). Tonight and tomorrow night at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, you can expect to hear at least “Death Wish” and hear how it fits in with the rest of the brilliant songwriter’s unparalleled catalog over the past decade.

Single Review: "White Man’s World” by Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit
Music is at its best when it’s touching on the sensitive subjects. The topical ones that people tend to shy away from discussing publicly or even all together, either important social or political issues that, while uncomforting, need to be discussed out in the open. It’s starting some sort of dialogue about topics of such things that allow people to gain perspective and perhaps even come to a new understanding on the issues; and the most recent single from Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit’s The Nashville Sound (out June 16th via Southeastern Records) serves as a vessel for the singer to address his personal views on race and even gender in the U.S.. The “dreaded” term “white privilege” is never mentioned, though that’s precisely what so much of the song is hinting at. “I'm a white man living in a white man's town…”, “I'm a white man living on a white man's street…”, “I'm a white man living in a white man's nation…”. Those are a few of the lines that open up some of the verses, Isbell discussing the entitlements that comes with that, even if it’s from things few even think about. “…I've got the bones of the red man under my feet. The highway runs through their burial grounds…” may well be the most striking couple of lines in the whole song, an aspect few may even consider nearly a couple of centuries out from the atrocities committed against the Native Americans, though it’s an outlook everyone should take into consideration. In regards to more modern racial tensions, “White Man’s World” impressively navigates a fine line of being aware how new a thing such as equality is, stressing the importance of that without ever exuding any feeling of shame over it. Nor should there be, because no one alive today should be held accountable or blamed for the actions of their ancestors, yet there does needs to be a conscious effort to continue progressing and striving for full equality.
Isbell uses his wife (and band mate) as an example of gender inequality (“…Momma wants to change that Nashville sound, but they're never gonna let her”), while their daughter helps represent a certain degree of fear in the future, knowing she’ll grow up in a world that is more generous towards the opposite sex. All of that is brought home by what almost assuredly sprung from the results of America’s last election cycle, those verses serving as the book ends for the song, so to speak – reaffirming Isbell’s view that this is a white man’s nation. While calling attention to some of the ignorance that still plagues the system, Isbell also offers up what could become a rallying cry of sorts in helping to fix it, the chorus centering around the fact that everyone is part of the same race, the human race, all sharing much more in common than what can be seen on a superficial level. “There's no such thing as someone else's war. Your creature comforts aren't the only things worth fighting for. You're still breathing, it's not too late. We're all carrying one big burden, sharing one fate.” The idea could easily even be construed as naïve, though it’s so simple that it makes too much sense. Musically, “White Man’s World” is just as transfixing, a steady, deep drum beat setting a mostly slower pace that allows the listener to take everything in. It’s behooving of it, the moody guitars and occasional use of the piano; the breakdown proving to be the most engrossing part, the soulful riffs adding to the emotion, while the fiddle creates a bit of a Celtic vibe at times, adding an extra flare to the track. Whether you agree with the sentiments of it or not, “White Man’s World” is an unbiased look at the world, at least in accordance to how Jason Isbell views it. It succeeds in creating a sort of dialogue and offers up some valid points for listeners to mull over. There’s no sort of agenda that it’s pushing, other than the fact that we as people need to do better to make things more inclusive, and furthermore that men need to use their station to make that happen. I love this question, so I'm coming at you with new artists!!
Pick one song from each that stands out for you & why? It could just be your favorite. A melody. A lyric. The music. Whatever makes it special to you. ♥️
Jason Isbell
Any Chris Cornell Band/Solo Project
Elton John
Aerosmith
Ohhhh! It’s excited Keith! ♥️♥️ ready for more answers?
1. Jason Isbell- oh there are so many good songs. Right now, the theme of White Man’s World is just too achingly real. I'm a white man living in a white man's world, under our roof is a baby girl, I thought this world could be hers one day, but her mama knew better. It’s so true and beautifully said. Plus the fading maybe it’s the fire in my little girl’s eyes just offers some hope.
2. Chris Cornell- oh I love him! There’s a live version of Call Me a Dog which was a Temple of the Dog song. ( side note: Chris Cornell & Eddie Vedder 🧡) but it’s just gorgeous. His voice is just haunting 💔
3. Elton John- Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me. Another beautiful song. The lyrics are just pure poetry. And the imagery of Don’t let the sun go down on me. 💔
4. Aerosmith- Kings and Queens. This song doesn’t sound like any other Aerosmith song. It’s got some very medieval imagery. I love how it’s just so different. Of course, it also came out when The Toxic Twins were deep in their addictions so they probably had very little input.

ummm i am interested in the country songs you know about racism!!
Of course! Thank you for the interest! However, before I go any further, I just want to make a disclaimer
Disclaimer: Topics of this song include racial inequality of African Americans as well as native Americans. I want to make note that these songs are sung by white as well as black artists including Willie Jones and Mickey Guyton. I know how important it is that white people in the US should not be the leader on this topic.
Now that being said, here are some songs. Please be nice :)
White man's world - Jason Isbell
Mississippi it's time - Steve Earle
Vanishing race - Johnny Cash
Long violent history - Tyler Childers
What it means - Drive-by Truckers
White girl - Johnny Cash
Man in black - Johnny Cash
Skip a rope - Henson Cargill
American Dream - Willie Jones
Black Like Me - Mickey Guyton
