h3llb3nt - 0.01 (CD, 1996, Fifth Colvmn Records). First release from Hellbent (more often stylized h3llb3nt). A stellar collaboration between Bryan Black (haloblack, Motor, Black Asteroid), Eric Powell (16 Volt), Jared Louche (Chemlab), Charles Levi (Thrill Kill Kult) and Jordan Nogood (Nogooddesign).
Love all of h3llb3nt's releases. Their first release sets a great tone for the band with post-coldwave, literal whispers of cyberpunk and the clinical sounds of the digital, balanced nicely with Levi's signature funky basslines.
For 1996, the artwork seems to hint toward the digital precision a la The Designers Republic (95's Wipeout game/compilation) and typeface minimal-but-messy like Tomato (Underworld's '94 LP Dubnobasswithmyhead). Stuff we'd call today probably early Y2K Aesthetic or maybe even a smidge proto-Metalheart. (Nogood's design spans all of h3llb3nt releases but also recognizable in album artwork for haloblack's '94 LP >Tension Filter< and 16 Volt's '96 LP LetDownCrush).
The music is just as excellent. Few artists or releases sound much like this. Highly suggest starting with "Chromed", "3 Murders, 3 Nights" and "Burnout", but the entire album is stellar as a whole.

The thing I love (one of the many actually) about these two bing bongs is the way they present themselves. This is Jared's wedding. He's the groom, the main man.
Jensen looks very sharp, he's always got that 'blue-steel' thing going on at the best of times but put that man in a suit and he's looking ironed, pressed, steamed etc. As I said, sharp. Put together, styled to oblivion.
Jared on the other hand always looks slightly, so beautifully dishevelled - and that's no slight because I love the man but I also love that no matter how dressed down or up he is, he always looks like he found his clothes on the floor, even at his own wedding he looks vaguely chaotic. Jared isn't scruffy, just very louche in the way his clothes wear him. There's chaos there and it's very Cancerian of him.
Beautiful. Equally. They wear their personalities and it's gorgeous.

5 years ago today I saw HIDE, Omniflux, Cocksure, Lead Into Gold, Chemlab, and ohGr all in one night at the historic Metro Chicago for Cold Waves VII. Growing up in a small town, I had traveled for a few shows before but this was my first BIG industrial event and the lineup was literally everything I could hope for. I saw so many of my all time favorite musicians, most of them for the first time, that night. 2018 was a huge year for me with massive life changing experiences (including moving to LA—more on that in a couple of days) and this was absolutely one of them. I got to talk to Ogre and give him a hug, I met Paul Barker and Jared Louche, I met people who I’m still friends with to this day, and for the first time I really truly felt like I was fully part of the industrial community. Obviously seeing ohGr was the biggest highlight, but one of my absolute favorite moments of the entire night was when Lead Into Gold played “Faster Than Light” and literally EVERYONE was singing along. It was so transcendent. It was the best lineup I could imagine and I technically met Angel through this show. This show felt like the beginning of my life in many ways. I can’t really convey eloquently or in a short amount of words how much that night meant to me.

Chemlab was a Coldwave and Industrial rock (or "Machine Rock") band formed in Washington D.C. in 1989 by Dylan Thomas More and Jared Louche with the help of short-time member Joe Frank. Influenced by the pioneers of the industrial genre, such as Throbbing Gristle, Chemlab brought a rough, experimental approach to their music.

All meaning is lost but this confusion remains I'm going to tear myself apart if I can't get myself together And spread my pieces around like waste Another life of no sleep, another storm in the dark With the sky pouring down, every creature will drown this time There will be no Noah's Ark, see you in hell

My second album review done! This one is partly a present for Jared Louche, since his birthday was a little over a month ago and he’s a completely stellar human being, but it’s also just because, well... I really love this album, and have wanted to do a writeup on it for ages. Enjoy!
