JUNOOOOOOOO I MISS YOUR ART EVEVEVWVEVVEVEVEVEVEVWVE what was your design process for fantine and eponine I am very normal about them
this just reminded me , here's my design of 1817 fantine's outfit as described in the book !!
Tumblr media
design ramblings under readmore
the way i draw fantine (post-1815) is definitely influenced by her depiction in shoujo cosette & the musical , down to the blue dress and necklace, but i also based her appearance off of natalie paris as jane seymour from six + the "fantine" painting by margaret bernadine hall
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also fantine's hair has a lot of highlight colors compared to all the designs ive made thus far to really emphasize the "golden" aspect. younger cosette's hair is blonde too, and has similar amounts of detail in the color (which does get lost over time), but its more subdued compared to fantine's.
i wanted to go for a seashell/ocean motif in her design because of the "pearl" comparisons and likening to greek mythological figures she has in her introduction, and also to symbolise her care/protection
also note that she and marius both share the color turquoise at some point in their designs because of the similarities in their stories despite contrary origins (both were slowly demoted back/suddenly thwarted into a life of poverty)
Tumblr media
i was inspired by the same media when designing eponine, but the main inspiration was lea salonga's eponine from the stage musical with the iconic floppy hat, sc with the green eyes and orchid purple dress, and samantha bark's portrayal in the 2012 movie with the dress itself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the thenardier family has a signature ochre yellow & brown color combination (gavroche having the least amount of it in his design because of the basically nonexistent connection he has to the family by the time he becomes a main character), but eponine is the only one that wears green and purple. the cool green in her eyes and the necklace she has is meant to contrast with the stark light green of monsieur thenardier's eyes, while also symbolising her connection to him by way of the patron-minette.
the warm purple tones are meant to represent her active involvement in bringing change to people's lives. in the designs ive made, the characters associated with red are those who transform others + themselves and enact change, and blue is for those who are affected by change or wish for the ideal past (indigo/dark blue being reserved for those with authority/power). both she and cosette have purple as their main color (aka mix of red and blue), but cosette's shade is more on the cooler side.
Tumblr media
if ur interested heres some notes i have about the color red in my designs based on the stuff mentioned :]
Tumblr media
and i have yet to finish their designs but heres a sneak peak of the gillenormand family who wear light blue tones

Fantasy Wardrobe: Popular Headresses (Women) Part 1
Tumblr media
(Disclaimer: These are mostly European and from Mediaeval/Renaissance times. Other posts are coming about other periods and places so keep that in mind)
Fashion for ladies have changed throughout the centuries, no garment more so than the headdresses they wear. Statement headdresses can be an interesting component to add to your worldbuilding. The use of different styles give each culture a defined feel and could act as a symbol of all kinds of lands in your WIP.
Hennins
Tumblr media
These are those headdresses. The ultimate headdress for a Princess. These headdresses made of stiffened material and draped with veils. They came in the popular cone shape (image 1), or the truncated shape/ flower pot (image 2) or the divided version (image 3). These were popular in the 15th Century, coming from the French courts and the Burgundian court.
Stickelchen Cap
Tumblr media
This headdress was made up of a padded piece pinned to the hair, draped with a veil and topped with a heavy almost square-shaped cap usually heavily beaded and embroidered.
Wimples
Tumblr media
Wimples were drapes of material that covered a woman's hair, neck and sometimes her face. With its similarities to hijab, historians suspect that wimples might have been among the fashions that crusaders (dick-heads) brought back. Wimples were often worn to show modesty, with many nuns and religious women taking it as their signature look.
Balzo
Tumblr media
These headdresses are circular rolls of materials fitted to be worn at the back of the wearer's head. They could be stitched with veils and precious stones.
Crespines/Cauls
Tumblr media
These were popular for a long period of time, close to two centuries. These provided ladies with long hair to tidy it out of way. Women wore their hair on either side of their heads, held by thd crespines which could be made of mesh metal or cloth netting. The whole thing would be secured with a fillet, a length of material or metal fitted over the top of the head.
French Hood
Tumblr media
The French hood is a crescent shaped headdress that sits atop the head, allowing the front half of the hair to be shown. The back was always stitched with a veil. The front half of the hood wasn't a fucking hairband (calling out Wolf Hall) but rather a significant height usually bejewelled and embroidered.
English/Gable Hood
Tumblr media
This sort of looks like a roof but a rather regal roof. The ancestor to the French hood, it was the favourite headdress of Katherine of Aragon and Jane Seymour. It has always been one of the more regal looking headdresses to me.
Kokoshnik
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite headdress of all time. It is Russian headdress of all different shapes, the most popular and common being the crescent shaped one. Most kokoshniks were accompanied by bands of beads or pearls laid across the forehead or a large bow at the back. I fucking love the kokoshnik.

The Gravity of Tempered Grace (part two)
[Didn’t get a whole lot of response from part one, but I’ve worked too much on this fic to not post all of it, so I will keep posting it anyway!]
[part one]
[Part 2: I See the Devil in Me, Saying What I Want to Hear]
The Life and Times of Jane the Queen, Chapter 4 - The Lady of Wulfhall
“Not much is truly known of Jane’s early years living at Wulfhall. Most records of her life don’t begin until she arrived at the court of King Henry and began to serve Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn before becoming queen. It is likely she did not receive a formal education, especially not one to compare to Henry’s other wives. She was barely literate, and her formal signature is notable for backwards E’s in both her name and her spelling of “Quene.” Where she faltered in academics, however, she thrived in household work and needlepoint. Some of her embroidery was so well-made, it survived into the 1650s, over one hundred years after her death.”
There she goes again, Catherine can’t help but notice. More needlepoint.
It’s almost hypnotizing, in a way. Jane works with such poise and precision, it’s truly a work of art to behold.
She’ll look up, tilt her head slightly to the side as she studies the subject of today’s endeavor, then turn her head back down to her needlepoint. She does this over and over, never getting dizzy, never deviating.
She only embroiders what she sees, Catherine notes. No imagination or, seemingly, memories of her past life.
Jane remembers her first pass through this Earth, all of them do, but she seems detached from it. She can discuss the painful birth of her son and her prolonged, almost agonizing death without batting an eye.
Aside from maybe Katherine, Jane has the most emotional song in their show. She has outbursts of anger, one of which directed at Catherine of Aragon herself.
Even in those heated moments, though, Catherine can see that she’s only acting. Jane’s eyes are gray and lifeless, even as she screams in Catherine’s face. During rehearsals, it was clear that her tears during her song were produced on demand.
“Did you need something?”
Catherine snaps back to the present at Jane’s voice, and those cold eyes are fixed straight on her.
“You were staring off into space,” Jane says. “Did you need something?”
“Oh, uh, no. Thank you, though. Didn’t realize I zoned out.”
Jane simply hums and returns to her needlepoint.
---
Henry knows that his wife - wives, if you want to get technical - is halfway across the world, but what he needs is here.
It’s well into the witching hour when he stands outside the window separating him from his lost treasure.
He drops his knapsack to the ground and goes to work.
---
They’re just getting home after the show when Jane starts acting strange.
Strange, in this case, is somewhat relative, considering that Aragon and Anne would have classified almost all of her behavior up until now as “strange.”
“Did any of you love Henry?” She asks, sitting on the couch with tea in her hands, as casually as one would ask about the weather.
All the eyes in the room turn to her. “What do you mean?” Anna asks.
“Did you love him?” Jane repeats. “I did, but… did any of you?”
There’s something almost like sincerity in her eyes, and it’s the most emotion and life Catherine has seen out of her since they all came back.
“No,” Katherine says immediately, flatly, nearly offended at the question in the first place.
“Not really,” Anna says.
“I didn’t have much of a choice,” Parr adds softly.
It’s quiet, then, and all attention turns to the first two wives.
“I guess I did,” Catherine admits. “I mean, I was married to him for twenty-four years. You don’t get over that easily.”
“I did, at first,” Anne adds. “But I think I loved the danger and sneaking around more than I loved him.”
Jane looks at the both of them, cocks her head slightly to the side, and then, of all things, laughs.
Catherine bristles, and Anne couldn’t look more confused.
“What’s so funny?”
“You know he didn’t love either of you, right?” Jane asks. “It’s true that I’m the only one he loved.”
“Only because you had a living son,” Anne quips.
“A legitimate living son,” Catherine grumbles.
Jane smirks. “I also knew when to shut my mouth and not flirt with courtiers,” she says to Anne.
“Jane, chill,” Cathy pipes in. “I don’t know why you’re trying to rile her-”
She stops talking when Jane turns sharply to her. “I’m simply trying to figure out what my husband saw in these wenches.”
“Woah,” Anna stands up, “that was over the line. Apologize, Jane.”
“Why would I apologize? It’s true.”
“We’re a family, Jane,” Katherine butts in. “You don’t say shit like that to your family.”
Jane rolls her eyes. “Whatever. Goodnight.”
With no apology, no afterthoughts, no anything, Jane rises gracefully and makes her exit.
The other five all look to each other in disbelief. “What the hell was that?” Anna asks, dropping back into her seat.
“That was insane,” Katherine mutters.
“It was incredible,” Aragon whispers, staring blankly at where the wall meets the floor. “That’s the most emotion I’ve seen out of her since we all came back.”
“I have to agree with you there,” Anne mumbles.
“Is this… is this what she’s really like?” Cathy asks hesitantly.
No one can answer her, because no one knows.
The two who knew Jane in the last life… well, they aren’t all that sure they knew her at all.
---
Jane lays down on her bed and closes her eyes. When she opens them again, she has no idea where she is.
She’s standing up, first of all, with no memory of getting off the bed. And she’s outside.
Did she sleepwalk?
“Hello, sweetheart.”
A shiver runs down Jane’s spine, although she isn’t sure if it’s from delight or worry.
Delight, she finds herself deciding, despite her ambivalence about the whole thing, and turns around to face her husband.
He looks the same as she remembers, just as tall and ruggedly handsome, although perhaps slightly less aged.
Henry takes both of her hands in his, pressing kisses to her knuckles. “I’ve missed you, my love.”
Jane doesn’t answer.
“Didn’t you miss me too?”
“I don’t know.”
He tugs her softly against him. “I know, my love. I know.” So gently, he kisses her forehead. “But you’re here with me, now. Everything is alright.”
Resting her head on his chest, she tries to relax. But there are too many questions burning and flitting through her mind for her to ignore. “How are you here?” She asks. “And… and where are we?”
“I’m here by the same twist of fate you are,” he answers quietly. “I can’t say I understand it either. And we’re home, my darling. Doesn’t it look different now?”
Jane squints in the dark, and she can vaguely make out the city skyline. It definitely isn’t New York, that’s for sure.
“We’re in London,” he explains. “Back in our once-home.”
Jane’s eyes blow wide and she pries herself out of Henry’s arms. “How… what? London?”
“I’m here, love, you’re okay,” he tries to soothe. “I can’t tell you how, yet, but it’ll all make sense soon.” He leans in to kiss her head again, and Jane is in such shock she can’t move.
Henry reaches a hand into the satchel at his side and looks into Jane’s eyes. “Now go back home and forget all of this happened.”
---
Jane heaves a deep breath as she settles deeper into her bed. Another long day gone, another dreamless night ahead.
Without much pretense, Jane Seymour turns over and falls asleep.
And somewhere else, Henry smiles.

“McKellen Playing the Part” (2017) is a fascinating documentary about actor and activist Ian McKellen. It consists of one-on-one interviews, film clips, news clips, and re-enactments about his life, his career as an actor, and perhaps most importantly about his awaking as a political activist for Gay Rights.
I first discovered McKelken in 1981 when he played Saliari on Broadway in “Amadeus”. After the show I got Tim Curry (Mozart) and Jane Seymour’s autographs. But I didn’t think to get McKelken’s signature. The next year he toured the US in a one man show “Ian McKellen Acting Shakespeare” which I saw in San Francisco. I was amazed by his talent. I mailed my “Amadeus” program to him at the theater with a return envelop and he signed it for me.
McKellen was casually “out” to friends and coworkers all of his career. He also had several long term partners over the years. Although McKellen did not publically come out until later, he was active in fund raising for AIDS related causes throughout the 1980s.
But he publicly reveal he was Gay in 1988. He was motivated when Parliament passed a law prohibiting promoting homosexuality "... as a kind of pretended family relationship". He even debated a conservative journalist on the radio against the proposal. And when visiting a conservative official who supported the act, the official asked for McKellen’s autograph. He agreed then wrote, "Fuck off, I’m gay.”
With McKellen’s roles in the film series X-Men and as Gandolf in the “Lord of the Ring” trilogy, he may be the best known homosexual in the world. With that he’s also become a idol to a whole generation. We can’t ask much more from a boy from Burley!

A letter from Thomas Rutland and five other medical men to Thomas Cromwell, detailing Jane Seymour’s illness. The letter dates to 17th October 1537, five days after Jane had given birth to a son, Prince Edward (later Edward VI) at Hampton Court Palace. The birth had been long-lasting two days and three nights – though Jane was remarked to have been well immediately afterward. However on the 17th, two days after Edward’s christening, Jane suddenly worsened. By the 24th she was dead.
As the letter summaries, ‘all this night she [Jane] hath bene very syck and doth rather appare [worsen] then amend’. Jane’s death is oftentimes speculated to have been a case of puerperal fever, although a modern study determined that it is plausible that parts of the placenta had remained in Jane’s womb, something her doctors, unskilled in childbirth matters, would have disregarded. This led to severe haemorrhaging several days after labor. The third line from the bottom states that Jane’s confessor (Robert Aldrich, the bishop of Carlisle) had already rushed to her bedside ‘to minister to her grace the sacrament of unction’. Thus the authors of the letter are confiding in Cromwell that Jane’s life was in jeopardy.
The second from the bottom signature on the list is that of William Butts. Butts was one of Henry VIII’s leading physicians and frequently dealt with royal and noble patients. Whilst Cromwell would accuse Jane’s attendants of causing her death, by arguing that they had provided her with the wrong foods and enabled her to take fever, Henry VIII does not seem to have held any of his physicians as personally responsible.

So how do *you* spell the wives names?
For me personally, I like Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katheryn Howard, and Kathryn Parr.
Obviously, Anne and Jane are pretty straight-forward—I mean, there are actually other variations of Anne’s name but that spelling is the one everyone universally agrees on. For Catherine of Aragon, I have no problem with people that spell it Katherine; I like to spell it Catherine as an homage to her birth name, Catalina. Same thing with Anna of Cleves, I’m not bothered when people call her Anne, I just like to call her Anna because that was her birth name (also to distinguish her from Anne Boleyn). As for Katheryn Howard and Kathryn Parr, those spellings come from their own signatures.

Struggles
Ok so thanks everyone who encouraged me to do this, love you all
It’s about S!Anne’s struggles with OCD and ADHD and S!Jane struggling with Dyslexia.
It was a bit rushed so sorry about that and sorry if I get anything about any of these things wrong. I was able to use my own experiences with ADHD and Dyslexia but I did my best with OCD
This has the HC that Anna has OCD
Last names= Swapped
Word count: 1502
TW: None I don’t think, let me know though
Boleyn was sitting on the couch reading. It was a book about Mental illness and she was on the OCD chapter. Cathy had given her the book since she realized how much the queen liked to learn
Boleyn tapped the fingers of her right hand on the armrest of the couch every time she turned the page. Pointer, middle, pointer. She didn’t realize she was doing it. It was just a subconscious habit
When she reached the end of the chapter she shut the book and started thinking as she set the book perfectly centered on the table in front of her
Seymour ran down the stairs, her trusty lighter in hand and signature smirk on her face. She skidded to a stop when she noticed Boleyn sitting on the couch, looking at the closed book in front of her
“Hey nerd, you know what helps with reading? Opening the book.”
“I am aware of this you uncultured swine. I’m merely pondering on the chapter I just read.”
Boleyn’s watched beeped, signifying it was noon. She took her hair down from the low ponytail it had previously been in
“Okay well what were you reading?” Seymour questioned
“Not something you could grasp.” Boleyn retorted
“I’m smarter then you think, try me.”
“I highly doubt that’s true”
Seymour rolled her eyes and picked up the book after putting her lighter in her pocket. She opened to a random page and started scanning it, attempting to make sense of the jumbled mix of letters and words that she was seeing. She frowned “What’s dysphoria?”
Boleyn stood, walking over to stand on the right of the beheaded
“Firstly, dysphoria is by definition ‘a state of unease or generalized dissatisfaction with life.’ secondly, that word is dyslexia, not dysphoria. Lastly, dyslexia is ‘a general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but that do not affect general intelligence.’”
“Can I set this book on fire?” Seymour asked
“No!” Boleyn responded, snatching the book as Seymour pulled out her lighter
“What’re you two up to?” Jane questioned as she walked into the room the two swapped queens were in
Seymour scowled and grumbled something under her breath. She wasn’t the biggest fan of her counterpart
“Good afternoon” Boleyn greeted “I was reading when this vermin interrupted me”
Seymour rolled her eyes “You were not reading”
“I was processing the words on the cover and therefore reading”
Jane looked at the two with a slightly confused expression on her face “Alright..would either of you like anything?”
“I would like to burn that book” Seymour announced
“No.” Boleyn responded quickly
“Erm, lets not” Jane said with an awkward laugh
Seymour sighed “You guys are no fun”
Jane went into the kitchen to make herself some tea
Within the next few days, Cathy had started noticing Seymours struggle with reading and writing along with Boleyns methodic tendencies and hyperfocus
She approached Seymour first
“Hey” Cathay greeted
Seymour glanced over “Hey.”
“Can I ask you a question?”
“There’s nothing stopping you.” Seymour responded
“Fair enough. Do you have Dyslexia?”
Seymour simply shrugged “I don’t know. Is that the reading thingy Boleyn was going on about?”
Cathy nodded and Seymour shrugged again “Don’t know”
They had a short conversation before Cathy asked Seymour to read something which confirmed her theory when Seymour read d’s as b’s, q’s as p’s and constantly switched words and lines. Cathay thanked Seymour and left her so she could do..whatever she was doing.
She went to Boleyn next
“Hi”
“Hello Catherine” Boleyn looked up “May I help you?”
“I just had a question. You read the book I gave you right?”
Boleyn nodded in confirmation “Yes.”
“Do you think you might have OCD?”
“I believe it could be a possibility, yes.”
Cathy nodded “What about ADHD?”
Boleyn pondered on the question for a moment before responding “That is also a valid theory. I do exhibit the Hyper Focused side of the disorder”
Cathy nodded again “Well if you want to talk to anyone about it, Anna has OCD and Anne has ADHD”
“Thank you.” Boleyn responded politely though the thought of talking to her chaotic counterpart was not appealing
After a few days, Boleyn got curious so she went to Anna’s room and knocked on the door
“Who is it?” The red queen called
“Boleyn” the divorced queen responded
There was silence for a moment before Anna responded
“Come in”
“Thank you” Boleyn said as she walked into the room, closing the door behind her
“Cathy says you have OCD?”
Anna nodded “Yeah?”
“I do too, self diagnosed of corse but I was wondering if you had any tips to help me cope with the compulsions and, erm..more intrusive thoughts.”
Anna nodded in understanding “I’m not sure how good my advice would be but I can give it a shot”
Boleyn nodded in acceptance and sat down, waiting for Anna to speak
“First off, never try to stop the thoughts. Nine times out of ten it only makes it worse. Secondly, it’s okay if you slip up with a compulsion. It doesn’t mean you’re a failure if you do. Thirdly, slowly try to lessen the compulsions like if you have a tapping compulsion where you uh..tap a doorframe five times before you go through. Next time try to just do four and repeat that until it feels comfortable. It’s okay if it feels uncomfortable at first, that’s completely normal so don’t push it. Lastly, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask someone for help. It sometimes helps to talk about your thoughts and compulsions and can even lead to good methods of dealing with them. Oh, also, everyone’s OCD is different so if some methods don’t work for you that’s okay. You can find your own methods and do research on what could work.”
Boleyn nodded “Thank you that was quite helpful”
“Happy to help” Anna respond
“Have a good day.” Boleyn respond before exiting the room, automatically touching the door frame with her right hand as she went
Boleyn took a breath and thought for a moment before deciding to talk to her counterpart against her better judgement
She walked into Anne’s room. Anne was laying stomach down on the bed, propped up with her elbows as she held a controller and played Halo
“Are you busy?” Boleyn asked
“Yeah but give me a sec and I’ll be right with you” Anne responded
Boleyn sat down and waited. It took Anne five minutes to get bored of what she was doing so she took out the game and put in another, seemingly forgetting about Boleyn who cleared her throat to get the girls attention
Anne looked over “Oh, right, sorry. What’s up?”
“I was wondering about your ADHD”
Anne shrugged “I have it. No idea what it means.”
“Well what are your symptoms?”
“Uhhh” Anne thought back to when Cathy had talked to her “Hyper, short attention span, fidgeting, impulsive, probably some other stuff. I dunno”
“That was little help but good to know, thank you”
“Mhm” Anne had already gone back to the game
Boleyn rolled her eyes and left
Seymour sighed as she sat on the couch, biting her lip and questioning how the fuck people could read. Parr had suggested the book but Seymour was having great trouble decoding the words. She was about a minute away from burning the stupid book when Cathy came down
“What’s up?” Cathy asked, seeing the frustration on Seymours face
“I can’t read this stupid ass book” Seymor complained “The words are all jumbled and the letters don’t make sense and I keep skipping lines”
“Have you ever tried an audio book?” Cathy suggested
“Hm?” Seymour asked
“Its something where someone reads a story and records it. There are a lot of apps for them. It might help you to listen to it as well as read along to keep yourself on track. May I see your phone?”
Seymour looked suspicious but gave Cathy her phone after unlocking it
Cathy downloaded an audio book app for her and started the subscription with her own money
“Thanks..” Seymour said “Why are you helping me? Do you want something?”
Cathy shook her head “No no, I just enjoy reading and hopefully you will too once you get the hang of it. Reading also leads to better writing so its a win-win” the blue queen smiled “Just remember it can be frustrating but thats okay. Learning no skills are hard but please don’t set anything on fire because of it”
Seymour smirked “I make no promises”
Cathy laughed a bit
Within the next few days, Seymour was making progress. Cathy had been right, the audiobooks did make a difference and helped her follow along. When she was listening to audio books was the only time she wasn’t chaotic, almost peaceful. Of course she never forgot to add just a bit of mischief to someones day
