Rudlós part 5: Who is Welnos?
Many have put forth a proposed PIE Cattle deity, formed primarily from Slavic Veles, and his Baltic linguistic cognates(Lithuanian Velnias, and Latvian Velns). He often appears as a Proto-Odin figure and subsumes much of his character and position in the Senowera Document. I believe this to be false, and based on little evidence, with Rudlos being a much stronger candidate for much that which prescribed to Welnos. There may also be a connection to Norse Ullr/Ull/Wuldor.
Tumblr media
Veles by BrotherBjorn
Veles, Enemy of Perun
Veles, Velnias, and Velns all protected cattle herds, and were associated with the underworld/underground, wealth, and trade. There are many theories on the etymology on the name, none are good but some more popular ones are connected to "wool", "hair", and *wulþuz. The willow tree is sacred to him.
Veles is one of few Slavic gods for which evidence of offerings can be found in all Slavic nations. The Primary Chronicle, a historical record of the early Kievan Rus, is the earliest and most important record, mentioning a god named Volos several times. Here, Volos is mentioned as god of cattle and peasants, who will punish oath-breakers with diseases, the opposite of Perun who is described as a ruling god of war who punishes by death in battle.
In the later half of the 10th century, Veles was one of seven gods whose statues Vladimir I of Kiev had erected in his city. It is very interesting that Veles' statue apparently did not stand next to others, on the hill where the prince's castle was, but lower in the city, in the marketplace. Not only does this indicate that Veles was connected with commerce, but it also shows that worship of Perun and Veles had to be kept separate: while it was proper for Perun's shrines to be built high, on the top of the hill, Veles' place was down, in the lowlands.
Veles most important function seems to be his form of a dragon, who acts as the archenemy of Perun. The battle is cyclical and eternal. The story is complicated but this I want to stress. I believe that his importance stems from Dualistic, Zoroastrian influence on Slavic religion. Before this, I think he was a deity of lesser importance. Associated with cattle herds/wealth , underground wealth, and trade. And maybe a myth putting him in conflict with Perun.
Tumblr media
Ullr
Ullr, whose name is reflexive of Proto-Germanic *wulþuz, meaning 'glory', is a Norse god(only attested in Scandinavia proper, primarily in Sweden) associated with skiing, . *Wulþuz ultimately derive from the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) noun *wul-tus ('sight, gaze, appearance'), itself from the root *wel- ('to see').
He is a god of skiing, archery, hand-to-hand combat, and the willow tree is associated with him.
Philologist Jan de Vries suggests that the god of rage Óðr–Óðinn stood in opposition to the god of glorious majesty Ullr–Ullinn in a similar manner to the Vedic contrast between Varuna and Mitra.
Among the few scholarly theories that hold any water about Ullr, among which is one arguing him to be an aspect of the Sky Father.
Theory: Welnos as a (sorta)distinct deity
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A tutelary deity of cattle herds, caves, wealth, the underworld, and commerce. If you were to replace cattle with goats(or deer) in that list, you'd have most of the attributes of Paxuson. While his goat/deer connection is distinct, I'd wager it's possible that the horned god may also be connected with cattle, animals of central importance to the PIEs. One of the most commons theories about his name connects it to wool, which doesn't make much sense for a cattle deity, but would for a deity of sheep.
I have often wondered why Paxuson's cognates seem to be either goat-associated or deer-associated. Now, I'm theorizing that he was actually associated with all three, under different aspects. It's possible that these split off, appearing as a goat-god, a deer-god, and a cattle-god.
Veles is also a patron of traveling musicians, while Paxuson is a patron of travelers in general. The Volhov(Slavic pagan priests) derive their name from his, and both are associated with shapeshifitng and magic. Veles takes many forms, including a dragon, wolf, bear, snake, and owl.
If one accepts this connection to Paxuson, then it would be entirely up to the individual practitioner whether Welnos would be but an epithet of Paxuson or a separate but related deity(presumably part of a triad formed by goat god, deer god, and cattle god). Note the fact that one of the reasons goats are the symbol of Paxuson is because they, like him, are liminal. They can be wild or domesticated, and are often something in between, especially for the ancients. Deer are exclusively wild, and cattle are almost exclusively domesticated. Given the PIE's appreciation for 3 in religious contexts, especially deific triads, I feel this fits very well.
This theory would necessitate that much of Veles Slavic character was taken from the archetypal Wrtos, Vrtra-type snake/dragon demon, among other things, possibly with some Rudlos syncretism.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some have connected Welnos with Odin and Rudlos. He is often associated mythologically and symbolically with Odin. He sometimes wields a spear. His overlapping domains include music, magic, disease. He is a shapeshifter, known for taking the form of a wolf. Rudlos is also connected to the protection and shepherding of cattle.
While I think Veles likely supplanted Rudlos among the Slavs in a few ways, I do not think the argument for Veles being cognate of Rudlos is strong at all. What few genuine similarities they do have, I feel can be easily explained by Norse conquest and subsequent migration to the region.
I will write more about Welnos as an aspect of Paxuson later. If you are interested in Proto-Indo-European polytheism, check out my blog and the rest of this series about the reconstructed god Rudlos.

Warm Flanders
Indulging our traveling desire and continuing the newly developed tradition of European Christmas markets, we bought tickets to Belgium. This trip had its peculiarities - and a unique aftertaste. Welcome to the capital of Europe!
Tumblr media
Panorama of Bruges from Belfry (I assume, the point where Brendan Gleeson's character jumps off in the movie 'In Bruges'
I don't know how we chose Belgium - but it all started with just Brussels, and then grew to another three towns. I suspect we may have a psychological condition.
After Brussels, Bruges was an obvious addition to the trip. Possibly the most well-known of tourist destinations in Belgium, it features a well-preserved medieval town so quaint like it crawled out of a fairy tale.
The movie 'In Bruges' (a nice piece of popularized arthaus) added to the fame of the place. The town in this flick is a character of its own - it serves as the premise and the plot twist, it helps to make hard choices and aids the protagonist. Besides, the film has gorgeous cast. Seriously, look it up if you've never seen it - or rewatch if you have.
Being in Belgium (and, more importantly, its northern part, Flanders - probably the most history-heavy region), I absolutely had to see Antwerp. Ghent was a curious little addition that we didn't plan - but that happened between Bruges and Antwerp just because we had time and opportunity. Stay tuned for more.
Brussels: Art and Chocolate
Tumblr media
Rue de la Chaufferette/Lollepotstraat, LGBTQ art street in the inner City of Brussels
Brussels is a weird city. Commonly I enjoy places that don't mind you roaming the streets (think Rome, Bangkok, New York). Brussels is however different. It etched into my memory as grey and rainy (I barely got a chance to snap a photo), and multifaceted to the point of utter incomprehensibility.
That is partly on national communities. Our free-tour guide mused on the immigration agenda of the city: nearly 80% of the current population (first and second generations) are not native to Belgium. The city, being the administrative and political center of Europe, is the very definition of a cultural melting pot.
Only a day before we arrived, French workers had a strike against ever-growing prices - thus all of Brussels was covered in barricades (not sure about the name, but something like Cheval de frise or knife-rest (aka Spanish rider) obstacles; all cold metal and barbwire, brutal).
But Brussels also flaunts its historic heritage and celebrates its art. The whole city is covered in street art - most notably scenes and characters from comics and statements in favor of LGBTQ community. Street decorations and overhead lamps of different designs and splendor turn the city into an exhibition of light.
Tumblr media
Altmejd, 2015. Musees royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique/Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van Belgie
The more traditional artistry is spread within the cluster of museums of Mont des Arts/Kunstberg, most notably the Royal Museu of Fine Arts that features both old masters (David, Rembrandt, Rubens - and a whole hall and Google-partnered tour program dedicated to Bruegel) and new masters (some of my beloved Impressionists including Van Gogh, Serat, Gaugin, and a couple of Rodins). Another pearl, Magritte's museum is just down the stairs.
We've also followed one of the most bizarre quests I've ever had, looking for all three pissing monuments of Brussels - the symbol-status Manneken Pis, his female version Jeanneke Pis and a non-fountain canine variation Het Zinneke. Belgian people are weird.
We had some hysterical fun trying to decipher one of the ads on a bus stop. It claimed certain Subea was the best gift for your loved ones on Christmas. Passersby undoubtedly believed us crazy as we tried to identify the thing - and never came close to guessing. Look it up, it's hilarious.
Tumblr media
Blue street art, Brussels
Built on the time-tested principles of trading cities, Brussels preserves the tradition of market squares. In early December, the downtown is covered in Christmas towns and motley crowds, framed in softly shimmering lights. It's full of flavors of waffles with cream, and frites, and gluhwein, and seafood, and sausages.
Brussels is full of cyclists (even more so than Copenhagen), full of churches, and homeless, and nationalities - cuisines, skin tones, languages. The signs duplicated in French and Dutch do not help location purposes in any significant way.
Nevermind the confusing feelings I developed for Brussels, there is one thing I should mention with firm praise - chocolate. Walk the streets and have a cup of hot chocolate - it's literally chocolate of your choice melted in hot milk. Eat warm Liege waffles topped with chocolate and cream. Buy a set of (regular) chocolate boxes with discount - or pay a visit to Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert to learn about chocolate as art. It's expensive, yes, but oh is it worth every cent!
Break a chocolate bar of preference - dark works best - into pieces, add to the cup and pour with hot milk. Stir until it melts. Enjoy the taste of Belgium.

Bruges: The Belfry and the Waffle Houses
Tumblr media
Rozenhoedkaai, Bruges
Belgian capital is the least Flemish city among those I've visited. Bruges, on the other hand, seems to bear the imprint of one of the richest regions of medieval Europe. The town is neat and cute, full of waffle houses with stair-step facades, all red brick and yellowish stone. The streets are carefully crafted and well-groomed; they stretch in slow curves, and the houses crowding each side chant their stories to the tourists in a never-ending lullaby.
Houses plaster all over each other - it feels like each street has only one building that was actually constructed with 4 walls. The rest figured 'hey, here's a perfectly good empty wall right there, with nothing attached, why not stick to the side'.
The whole country is like that, one of the signature traits of Belgium, alongside angry cyclists and painted waffle houses.
Before walking to the main attraction (Belfry, naturally), we've decided to have a glass of beer in Halve Maan, one of the oldest breweries in town. We were pleasantly surprised by the sleepy emptiness, the fireside couches and craft beer (I've never had an 11° beer before, it felt almost as a shot of whiskey). In a slumbery, sheepish haze we walked around the Minnewaterpark with its swans and gardens dipped in green moisture.
Tumblr media
Minnewaterpark. After the rainy, grey-ish Brussels, Bruges met us with sun-through-the-clouds and warmth worthy of mid-October. I finally got out my camera and snapped my way through the cute medieval city
The territory of Bruges is covered in canals - no wonder it's called the small Venice of the North, and the centuries-old architecture covers the town in a romantic blur. Even the long queues of Belfry (one person in, one out, and around half a hundred waiting for their turn) didn't disturb our dreamy mood. The view from above maps the whole town on the palm of your hands, and the stone parapet is covered in numbers and names of cities with arrows pointing the direction.
Tumblr media
Carillon, a fascinating musical instrument that has several dozen bells connected to play melodies. The Belfry carillon plays a different melody every quarter of an hour
Belfry is gorgeous at sunset, especially observed from Grote Markt - towering, starkly contrasted against the fading skies.
Bruges is probably best-known for its streets - after you've seen the main attractions, there's no clear itinerary, but just wander around and get lost in the medieval brick labyrinth. You can visit the old windmills - each with its own unique name - and the corner of Groenerei, which is less romantic in winter but still a nice place for a romantic rendezvous. Or just roam the streets and inhale the ambiance of this old town that looks like it jumped straight out of a fairytale with enchanted castles, simplistic plotline where good always conquers evil and a set of enjoyably cardboard characters.
Sometimes it's fun to experience something so far from real life. Can't disagree with the philosophic view of Fiennes's character from 'In Bruges'.

Train Tales
Belgium is unexpectedly bad at doing trains. We heard the first bell as we tried to get out of Brussels. The Northern train station has a clear division between two worlds. The ground floor belongs to hobos and (most probably) unemployed immigrants - this is the world of half-light, scary coughs and little noises, empty food wrappings, garbage, people wrapped in multiple layers of dirty blankets and coats. The upper floors are obviously European, well-lit, with shops, 24/7 information desks and wending machines. The contrast is so stark that it's frightening.
Tumblr media
(Under)ground floors of Antwerpen-Centraal
Yet this was but a warning. For some unknown reason, the schedule of Belgian trains is really complicated - we couldn't make sense of it using just timetables and scoreboards. This was a shock for me specifically - I just went to Italy a month prior, where I didn't even need to talk to anyone to understand where to buy tickets and how to get from point A to point B.
Obviously we were not alone confused by the whole system - by the machine selling tickets, a nice lady was spending her working hours explaining stupid tourists how this works. She offered us a ticket we didn't consider - it could take us to 10 destinations (we needed 6, and decided to spend 2 more for a short detour to Ghent before Antwerp; profit).
The complications started when we failed to notice the class of the coach we were boarding. Truth to be told, there was a number '1' on the side - but the inside didn't look any different from second class, so I'm not sure what's the deal. 10 minutes into the ride, a railway employee walked in and aggressively started to demand extra payment to 'upgrade' our tickets - about 10 euro per person. None of us were allowed to leave the first class coach for the second.
The thing about that whole situation was: of all the people in the coach, only one woman was aware of its first class status. The rest were bewildered and looked like lost tourists (some of us surely were) who forgot to check the number on the side of the carriage. Which, frankly, didn't feel like the people's fault. A Spanish family nearly started a brawl with the guy - which earned my compassion but also a portion of solid mirth.
Hilarious experience - but also quite frustrating. Not too fond of Belgian train system.
Ghent: The Castle and the Histrionic Weather
Tumblr media
Gravensteen, Ghent
I didn't expect this short detour would turn out this satisfying. Don't get me wrong, there's not much to do in Ghent in the evening. In a manner traditional for the whole country, life dies away after 6PM. As nightfall covers the streets, the shops and restaurants close, and the whole city seems deserted. There are some late passersby, some groups of youth and random tourists but they're not common, especially further from downtown.
But the architecture is spectacular nonetheless. Korenmarkt (basically, central square) with Church of Saint Nicholas is the heart of the city. The sites are mostly all on the same line - Stadhuis Gent and Belfort, Saint Bavo cathedral and a couple of nearby 'palaces' that were actually residences of (very) wealthy merchants, and Saint Michael's church on the other side of Korenmarkt, across the Leie river.
Tumblr media
It was enjoyable to just wander the empty streets quite aimlessly, bumping into architectural sites curious things here and there
Gravensteen is exactly the prototype you imagine when someone says 'a castle'. It's the type of medieval structure you drew as a kid, with the battlements and turrets. This is where a valiant knight came to rescue a fair maiden from an evil king. It's The Ultimate Castle.
In yet another plot twist, the weather in Ghent was unpredictably fun. It made us giggle at its hysterical fits.
Rain, wind and damp autumnal warmth changed each other in bizarre epileptic seizures.
One moment, it decided to rain - and the downpour started as soon as we opened our umbrellas. 2 minutes later it all stopped as if nothing happened. Ten minutes passed - and terrible gusts of wind that nearly knocked us down. Sure enough, soon it was warm and mellow again. Best advice when the weather is in such a theatrical mood: keep an umbrella with you at all times.
The walk from the city center to the train station is quite long, about an hour. But at least the building of the train station is worth exploring - it has great inner decorations all over the ceiling that imitate medieval style. Outside, by the largest bike parking I've seen after Copenhagen's sleeping districts, a sad man was playing his wistful sax; there seems to be something about Belgium and saxophones.
What to see in Ghent:
Korenmarkt (basically, central square)
Church of Saint Nicholas
Saint Michael's church
Gravensteen
Stadhuis Gent
Belfort
Saint Bavo cathedral
Antwerp: The Train Station and the Sky
Tumblr media
Antwerpen-Centraal Train Station, Antwerp
After the grey cold rain of Brussels and the crazy run of tourist-packed Bruges and (devastatingly) empty Ghent, Antwerp was all sunshine and warmth. Easily the most enjoyable time I've had in Belgium.
Antwerp is a mild, soft city, quite self-indulgent - it has less tourists than either Brussels or Bruges - and completely immersed in its own thoughts. Traces of the eternal, undying energy that preserves big cities can be found everywhere.
First things first, we went to see the jewel of Antwerp's sightseeing itinerary - Antwerpen-Centraal, the main train station of the city. It has 4 floors, with trains arriving on each of them - it is really impressive, especially as the whole structure is sunlit through the ribbed glass roof and the underground floors are dipped in orange-and-purple lights, the true impressionist study of light and color.
Tumblr media
Antwerp has a clear itinerary, as if the city was built with the idea of easy navigation in mind. Starting from Antwerpen-Centraal and past the diamond district, the shopping streets of Antwerp start and run right to the heart of the city, Grote Markt. The walk there is short if one ignores the detour sites like the beautiful neoclassical Bourla theater with round-ish colonnade façade, the house of Rubens turned museum, the oldest house in Antwerp build circa 1480, completely wooden and still inhabited, or the baroque St Charles Borromeo church, which simplistic interior is decorated with astonishing woodwork.
The notorious diamond district of Antwerp is located right beside the train station. History has it that it all started with shops opening here so that rich people coming to Antwerp to buy diamonds could keep their incognito and leave as soon as the deal was sealed, without the need to visit the town.
Tumblr media
Grote Markt and the nearby Groenplaats are connected with a short street that features another pearl of Antwerp, the Cathedral of Our Lady. This majestic Gothic temple is narrowly surrounded by the old houses of trading guilds glued to its every side. You cannot actually see the side walls of the Cathedral (which is another trademark feature of Flemish towns - a dead giveaway that trade was of utmost importance, and that secular and religious matters were closely connected).
Grote Markt itself looks just like other main squares in Belgium - a lot of space adapted for Christmas markets during this time of year, crowded by waffle houses with gilded statues and inscriptions dating back to the Autumn of the Middle Ages, and towering Brabantine Gothic spire, the cynosure of the city.
Tumblr media
Stroh violin player. Stroviol is a popular instrument of street musicians, seen all over Flanders
The next thing I was agitated to see was Sint-Annatunnel - a 1/2 km tunnel under the riverbed, fully built for walking on foot, riding on bicycles and even for motorized vehicles. The escalators are wood-paneled and lacquered, the photos on the walls tell the history of construction of the tunnel as one descends.
Tumblr media
Quay along river Scheldt, shipyard and windmills
On our way to MAS, we've taken a turn into the Antwerp red lights district. As I was quite shamelessly staring at the girls (literally) displayed in the windows, my friend surprised me, hilariously paying attention to some nesting boxes on a random tree instead. Some way to explore the city.
Don't miss on the chance to visit MAS museum. For a tourist, it's a golden opportunity: free entrance to the rooftop with stunning night panorama of Antwerp lights. From up above, the lights on the windmills twinkle red, painting an ominous image in the night skies. The walls of the interior are covered with posters of modern art (sometimes inspiring, sometimes hilarious, sometimes frightening). Besides, MAS is open till 10 PM, a rare case for Belgium.
Tumblr media
MAS pays the oddest homages, and one of them is to Harry Potter franchise: the building features floor 9 and 1/2.
While on the roof of MAS, the pragmatism and commercial genes of Flemish people deliver nothing but pure delight. The nearby houses host advertisements for the visitors of the museum: cafes and restaurants ornament their awnings with offers of hot drinks and rich meals.
What to see in Antwerp:
Antwerpen-Centraal
diamond block
Leysstraat 32-34 and 27 (twin buildings)
Meir (shopping street)
Rubenshuis
Bourlaschouwburg
Boerentoren
Sint-Carolus Borromeuskerk
Groenplaats
Cathedral of Our Lady
Grote Markt
Brabo fountain
Stadhuis Antwerpen
Het Steen and Lange Wapper memorial
Sint-Annatunnel
Stoelstraat 11 (the oldest house of Antwerp)
Sint-Pauluskerk
Schipperskwartier (red lights district)
MAS museum (rooftop viewpoint)
What to eat:
chocolate (in all forms, whether it's box of finest pralines, a chocolate bar, or a cup of hot chocolate)
waffles (fillings vary; I personally prefer dark chocolate and whipped cream. Belgian people however have plain waffle with sugar powder)
beer (one of the oldest and most important produces of the region; brewing beer is fine art here)
frites (basically French fries, but don't call them that - it's offensive, given the fact they were not invented in France; the locals still hold their grudge over the matter)
mussels (Brussels specialty, usually go with frites on the side)
Flanders As It Is
Tumblr media
Wandelterras Noord, quay of Antwerp, near Sint-Annatunnel. The sun gave us its last warmth of the day as we strolled along the Antwerp quay, the dark silhouettes of seagulls scattering sunbeams as we scared them off the railings
The towns of Flanders are easily recognizable. The main square is always called 'Grote Markt'; the combination of a cathedral (usually of Our Lady), a stadhuis and a belfry impending over the town is mandatory. Old houses of stone (and sometimes even wood), with stepped roofs and intricate ornaments. Waffles and chocolate on every corner, infinite varieties of beer in any pub. Add cyclists during the day or bicycle parking at night, cobblestone streets, a culture co-depending with trade - and you have a perfect portrait of a Flemish city.
It was a little vacation we all need from time to time - not spectacular but fun, warm and surprisingly full of color in this grim, gray time of the year.

U.S. Sets Coronavirus Case Record Amid New Surge (NYT) The United States is in the midst of one of the most severe surges of the coronavirus to date, with more new cases reported across the country on Friday than on any other single day since the pandemic began. Since the start of October, the rise in cases has been steady and inexorable, with no plateau in sight. By the end of the day, more than 85,000 cases had been reported across the country, breaking the single-day record set on July 16 by about 10,000 cases. By that measure, Friday was the worst day of the pandemic, and health experts warned of a further surge as cold weather sets in.
Work already underway for presidential inauguration (AP) While much of Washington is twisted in knots over the upcoming election, there’s another contingent already busy trying to figure out how to stage an inauguration for the to-be-determined next president during a pandemic. Visitors to the U.S. Capitol and the White House can already see preparations underway for the Jan. 20 ceremony, a date set by the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, for whoever emerges as the winner. And low-flying helicopters are swooping around town as part of beefed-up security precautions. The inaugural ceremonies will be held on the West Front of the Capitol, a tradition that began under Ronald Reagan. The Architect of the Capitol is busy constructing the inaugural platform from scratch. The platform traditionally holds more than 1,600 people, including the president and vice president, members of Congress, Supreme Court justices, and the outgoing president and vice president. Bleachers above the platform hold 1,000 additional people. The view from the West Front stretches the length of the National Mall, where Americans from around the country gather to catch a glimpse of history. After the ceremony, the president and vice president will attend a luncheon in National Statuary Hall that includes speeches, gifts and toasts. Then it’s on to the parade and inaugural balls.
Stockpiling (Boston Globe) A nationwide tracking poll this month found that 58 percent of those surveyed said they’re stocking up on essential goods, up six points from the same poll last month. Of those people, 56 percent attributed their concerns to a resurgence of COVID-19, 24 percent to chaos associated with the wave of protests against racism, and 20 percent to unrest related to the election, said Jon Last, president of Sports & Leisure Research Group, a New York market research firm that has been surveying about 500 Americans twice a month since the pandemic began. Even more alarming: 61 percent of those polled said they feared the country was on the verge of civil war. “This is the single most frightening poll result I’ve ever been associated with,” said Rich Thau, president of Engagious, another research firm that helped conduct the survey.
In Colorado, It Feels Like a Fire Season Without End (NYT) “Pray for snow,” is the refrain every autumn across Colorado’s high country as people wait for blizzards to blanket ski slopes, recharge reservoirs and bring in the wintertime tourists. But on Friday, people were praying for the snow to save their homes. It was their only hope for relief from a spree of late-season wildfires that have choked skies with smoke and sent thousands fleeing, a grim coda to a year of relentless, record-setting wildfires. Across the West, wildfires are now burning later into the fall—and even wintertime—as climate change turns seasonal wildfires into a year-round menace by disrupting rainfall patterns, melting snow earlier and scorching meadows and lodgepole pine forests into tinder. “It’s crazy, just crazy,” said Mike Diets, who spent Friday trying to find out whether his two lakeside houses in drought-stricken Grand County were still standing. “It’s hunting season. We’d usually be wading through snow this time of year.” Across Colorado’s mountain towns, people who have been choking on smoke for months and now sleep with “go bags” packed in their cars have been asking: When will it end?
Anti-drug alliance tested after U.S. arrest of former Mexican defense chief (Washington Post) During the years that Gen. Salvador Cienfuegos spent as Mexico’s defense secretary, he would sometimes brag about the partnership he helped build with American officials. “The only thing that I am sure of is that the bilateral, military-to-military and defense-to-defense relationship between Mexico and the United States will continue to strengthen more and more,” Cienfuegos told Craig Deare, a former assistant U.S. defense attache in Mexico and a military historian, before leaving office in late 2018. Now, Mexican and U.S. officials are left to pick up the pieces after Cienfuegos was arrested in Los Angeles earlier this month on U.S. charges that he had aided a drug cartel during his six years as the country’s top defense official. The allegations have shocked Mexicans and humiliated the military, one of the country’s most venerated institutions. Some officials worry that the backlash could damage cooperation in the fight against narcotics trafficking. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has suggested that the arrest may have been made “for political or other reasons” and accused the Drug Enforcement Administration of “meddling.” Some current and former U.S. officials say that going after Cienfuegos may not have been worth it, considering its potential effect. “I would argue that maintaining an effective bilateral relationship is more important than the DEA or Department of Justice getting a scalp,” Deare said. “The government of Mexico is well within its rights to be upset that we disregarded their sovereignty, their institutions. In effect, we prioritized the wrong thing.”
Covid-19 surge in Belgium leads to shortage of doctors, teachers and police (Washington Post) Well into Europe’s second wave of the coronavirus, so many Belgians are sick or quarantining that there aren’t enough police on the streets, teachers in classrooms or medical staff in hospitals. In some hospitals, doctors and nurses who have tested positive but don’t have symptoms are being asked to keep working, because so many others are out sick with covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. School principals are marshaling secretaries and parent volunteers to replace falling ranks of teachers. “The situation is more serious” than in April, Christie Morreale, health minister of the French-speaking region of Belgium, told the RTL broadcaster on Friday, after announcing a “partial lockdown” alongside other regional leaders. “If you are a nurse and you have a few hours to dedicate in a nursing home or a hospital, if you’re a nursing student, a medical student, an educator, they have need of support.”
Polish President Duda infected with coronavirus (Reuters) Polish President Andrzej Duda has tested positive for coronavirus and is subject to quarantine but is feeling good, officials announced on Saturday, as the country imposed fresh restrictions to try to stem a surge in the disease. Duda, 48, holds a mainly ceremonial role, but has the power to veto legislation. He is an ally of the ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party.
She Used to Clean City Hall. Now, She Runs It. (NYT) With election day looming, Nikolai Loktev was in a panic: The mayor of a tiny village of log houses, wood-burning stoves and rutted dirt roads 300 miles east of Moscow, he was running for re-election unopposed. In a Western democracy, this would not necessarily set off alarms; it might even be welcomed. But in Russia, where the ruling United Russia party virtually always wins, the bedrock political principle is to create the illusion of democratic choice. For that, Mr. Loktev needed an opponent. When he finally found who he thought was a willing patsy in the person of one Marina Udgodskaya, who cleans city hall, he thought his troubles were over. But then she won. Nobody was more surprised than Ms. Udgodskaya, who did not campaign and who said she had agreed to run in the election last month only to help her boss. At first, she said, she was “worried and confused” when the results rolled in, but she is now quite clearly warming to the idea of the mayoralty. She agreed to be sworn in, more than doubling her salary to 29,000 rubles, or about $380 a month. As a first order of business—after finding her replacement as cleaner, that is—she plans to bring streetlights to the village, she said, something that people have long been asking for.
Fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh goes on (AP) Rocket and artillery barrage hit residential areas in Nagorno-Karabakh on Saturday hours after the United States hosted top diplomats from Armenia and Azerbaijan for talks on settling their decades-long conflict over the region. The heavy shelling forced residents of Stepanakert, the regional capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, into shelters, as emergency teams rushed to extinguish fires. Local officials said the city was struck with Azerbaijan’s Smerch long-range multiple rocket systems, a devastating Soviet-designed weapon intended to ravage wide areas with explosives and cluster munitions. Nagorno-Karabakh authorities said other towns in the region were also targeted by Azerbaijani artillery fire. Officials in Azerbaijan claimed that the town of Terter and areas in the Gubadli region came under Armenian shelling early Saturday, killing a teenager. They also said 13-year-old boy died Saturday of wounds from an earlier shelling of Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second-largest city. Nagorno-Karabakh lies within Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since a war there ended in 1994. The current fighting that started Sept. 27 marks the worst escalation in the conflict since the war’s end and has killed hundreds, perhaps even thousands, according to official reports.
Tensions remain high between Thai government and protesters (AP) Thailand’s government and the country’s pro-democracy movement appeared no closer to resolving their differences Saturday, as the protesters’ evening deadline for Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha to step down approached. Prayuth’s office issued a statement repeating his plea to resolve differences through Parliament, which will discuss the political situation in a special session starting Monday. The protesters, however, said they were sticking to a deadline of 10 p.m. Saturday for Prayuth to meet their demands that he resign, and that their arrested comrades be released from jail.
Ethiopia blasts Trump remark that Egypt will ‘blow up’ dam (AP) Ethiopia on Saturday denounced “belligerent threats” over the huge dam it has nearly completed on the Blue Nile River, a day after U.S. President Donald Trump said downstream Egypt will “blow up the project it has called an existential threat. Without naming Trump or the U.S., the statement by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office came amid an outcry in Ethiopia over Trump’s latest threat over the dam. The $4.6 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is a source of national pride, aimed at pulling millions of people from poverty. Trump made the comment while announcing that Sudan would start to normalize ties with Israel. Downstream Sudan is a party to the talks with Ethiopia and Egypt over the disputed dam. “They (Egypt) will end up blowing up the dam,” Trump said. “And I said it and I say it loud and clear … they’ll blow up that dam. And they have to do something.” The U.S. president earlier this year told the State Department to suspend millions of dollars in aid to Ethiopia because of the dam dispute, angering Ethiopians who had accused the U.S. of being biased during its earlier efforts to broker a deal on the project among Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan. Ethiopia walked away from those talks. “They will never see that money unless they adhere to that agreement,” Trump said Friday. “Occasional statements of belligerent threats to have Ethiopia succumb to unfair terms still abound,” Ethiopia’s statement said Saturday. “These threats and affronts to Ethiopian sovereignty are misguided, unproductive, and clear violations of international law.”
Nigeria says 51 civilians, 18 security forces dead in unrest (AP) At least 51 civilians have been killed in Nigeria’s unrest following days of peaceful protests over police abuses, the president said Friday, blaming “hooliganism” for the violence while asserting that security forces have used “extreme restraint.” President Muhammadu Buhari’s comments are expected to further inflame tensions in Africa’s most populous country after Amnesty International reported that soldiers shot and killed at least 12 demonstrators Tuesday night as a large crowd sang the national anthem. The deaths sparked international condemnation. In a statement, Buhari also said 11 policemen and seven soldiers had been killed by “rioters” as of Thursday, and “the mayhem has not stopped.” He said another 37 civilians were injured in some of Nigeria’s worst turmoil in years. But many Nigerians are upset by what the president hasn’t said. Buhari in a national address Thursday night didn’t mention the shootings, instead warning protesters against “undermining national security and law and order.” On Friday he said the government “will not fold its arms and allow miscreants and criminals continue to perpetrate acts of hooliganism.”

#TBT Recipe- Frozen Fish Sticks - Just Like the Kind We Ate Watching 'The Wheel of Fortune'
Tumblr media
Wheel! Of! Fortune!  During the school year, we didn't get to watch TV during dinner. But in the summer, with Scotch dad traveling to Macon and Meth mom outside listening to our neighbor Judy talk about how many men hit on her at the Family Fitness Center, summertime meant less supervision and more meals in front of the television.
If you thought Meth mom would cook more food when she stopped cooking drugs, you would be wrong. Foods of the frozen variety were always popular at our house and we didn't mind. Banquet frozen chicken, Swanson's pot pies, and the Van de Kamp Fish sticks. All of the above served with a side of Tater Tots and Canned Green Beans.
Summer nights we would take our frozen feast on Tupperware plates in front of the little black and white TV and watch Wheel of Fortune. It aired before Jeopardy! - the game show for smart people. I assumed (correctly) that Wheel of Fortune was the game show for not smart people. For instance, I, a 7 year old could play along with adults like Jan from Rehoboth Beach, DE who peaked as a cashier at the WaWa. And Kent, the "business man" (aka Amway salesman) from Akron, OH.
Pat Sajak was affable and he didn't have that 'smarm' quality the hosts with the long, skinny microphones seemed to possess. (Last week I watched an old episode of Card Sharks and the host with the long, skinny mic asked a female contestant how often she "went without a bra.".) Pat Sajak was fucking progressive.
Look at Vanna White! The role of women in game shows was generally relegated to waving their hands around bottles of Woolite and Casio Watches. Vanna actually got to move the game along by turning the letters and though she was the only woman Scotch Dad ever referred to as ugly, she was plucky and encouraging like a sideline soccer mom.
Our favorite part of Wheel was the shopping round where the winner would get shown a showroom of home goods and signs boasting trips to Nantucket. The winner, Pete, the used Oldsmobile salesman from Pittsburg, would get to 'shop' for things like Grandfather Clocks and Water Skis. No, they didn't take home cash, they got Picnic Baskets and Recliners. Surfboards and Table Lamps. Area Rugs and Snowshoes.
We thought it was like Christmas. Wheel had a particular hold in popular culture as it was once featured on Nell Carter vehicle "Gimme a Break" where Nell got to be a contestant on Wheel! Glued to the episode I wanted nothing more than for Nell to win the big grand prize. She was ready, she had practiced. She was cocky AF. When the time came to solve the puzzle and win the big prize, she confidently and erroneously said, "Give Me Liberty or Give Me a CAR!"
Death. The correct answer was death. We died a little inside at that moment. Nell wasn't getting the car. She didn't even get a Fish Tank or a Foot Spa since they stopped doing the shopping round by then. Sad, we choked down the last of our little fish sticks and thought, Wheel of Fortune really IS the game for not-smart people.

19 Mar 2019 : Résumé JAN/FEV/MAR
[Attention gros pavé de lecture !]
OLA !
Big Bisous!

Twizel to Queenstown
Day 3 - 1/10/2018
We arose this morning to blue skies and a delightful five degrees. Things were looking up, especially with an early morning walk to revel in the conditions. Mackenzie Drive was a ring road that encircled the town so we were sure to not get lost, no matter which way we went. That was Tim's advice anyway. Heading in a clockwise direction, the road was flanked by basic fibro housing, the original cottages built for the families of the construction workers that built the hydro scheme. Twizel was a purpose-built town built around 1966 and maxed out at six thousand people eleven years later. It was at this time that the one thousand kids that went to the local primary school made it the largest in the country but by the mid-eighties, with the Waitaki development coming to an end, the population fell markedly to about the same as what it is today. Around thirteen hundred.
The mountains looked fantastic with the morning sun lighting up the snowy caps and the eastern slopes. The view changed as we worked our way firstly around the sports oval and then around the town, getting different perspectives with increasing sunlight.

With Jan back in the cabin and still to have breakfast, a trip to one of the few places open seemed appropriate so we walked into the local bakery with the intention of grabbing a few croissants to take back with us. We were only to be disappointed as they had plenty of what we didn't want. Light pastries were not available but more the case of cakes, pies, quiche and pastie type stuff. We grabbed a large quiche and kept walking until we reached our cabin, put the kettle on and cooked up some toast, baked beans and of course the quiche.

A giant game of draughts before breakfast anyone?
We left a glorious morning behind when departing Twizel, deciding to drive back to Lake Pukaki for a better look. We drove past yesterday and there were people everywhere, strong winds chopping up the water and generally unpleasant conditions. This morning however the wind was zero and the lake was still and magnificent. Less people than yesterday made it all for the better.
After pulling over on the southern end carpark, we got out for a few happy snaps and a brief look around including the two centres at the lake. One sold salmon and twenty-five dollar hats and the other, a small cultural building, told of the local people and their battle to keep the Tuna, a local, sacred eel from vanishing. The eels spend decades in local waterways before making their way to the ocean to spawn before their death. The hydroelectric scheme has prevented this migration. After a quick look around and some ducking and weaving to get some happy snaps across the lake with Mount Cook in the background, it was time to move on. With the visit to the lake over we drove back past Twizel and further south with no stopping intended unless we happened across something interesting.

Our next stop was Omarama for a break. The town had a few tourist shops good for a look around, one interesting and several just overpriced. The interesting one, an old wares shop, was typically full of junk. Some good junk scattered amongst junk. While we were looking, Jan turned up and joined us. She needed to get out of the car and apart from stretching the legs, she took the opportunity to post a couple of postcards, one to Eric and the other to Charlotte. Jan also loved the chance to look in the second hand shop for some bargains but none were to be had. A quick look in a clothes shop near the corner and we moved on.
Once we left Omarama we started the gradual climb up State Highway 8 towards Lindis Pass. We were leaving the Mackenzie Basin in North Otago and once through the pass would be heading into the Central Otago region. The slopes were not too steep and combined with the calm conditions, we were given great views of the valley. Being located in the dry interior of the South Island, little vegetation grew bar tufted grass that coated the landscape. Quite an impressive view.

A plaque at the lookout described how the world-renowned Otago South Westland red deer herd started there. Seven deer were presented to the Otago Acclimatisation Society by the 11th Earl of Dalhousie of Brechin in Scotland and brought out to Port Chalmers by ship, on to Omarama by paddle steamer and up to Lindis Pass by bullock wagon. They were released in 1871.
By now it was midday and thirteen degrees. The next town was a small roadside stop called Tarras, home of Shrek the Sheep, a local character that along with about seventeen thousand other sheep called Bendigo Station home. He avoided being shorn for years by hiding when the flock were being rounded up each time, apparently by hiding in caves and stuff. He was caught in 2004 after six years on the run and his fleece weighed almost thirty kilograms. He was again sheared in 2006 on an iceberg off of Dunedin as a publicity stunt and was eventually put down in 2011. We remembered Shrek but didn't realise how time had flown. It didn't seem like he hit the headlines fourteen years ago.

The small town was interesting but definitely catered for the tourists. We planned for some lunch but the food was overpriced as was everything else. Some sort of small cheese and spinach sausage roll type thing was ten bucks. Shane could have eaten four. We settled on cappuccinos, café lattes and some crisps while resting in the sun and watching the mad Japanese tourists sporadically pull up on their push bikes and looking the worse for wear after tackling the pass. The other two shops were an expensive clothes shop with merino garments on display and around the corner and up the lane, the Shrek Museum. We were soon on our way again looking for our next interesting stop.
It didn't take long. A half an hour later we were driving through Cromwell, welcoming us with a giant peach that had a serious arse crack problem and ten minutes after that, and now on State Highway 6, we were high above the Kawarau Gorge and stopping for a look at an interesting area with plenty of activity. Only out for a look, a long suspension bridge crossed the river to the Goldfields Mining Centre. Once called Gee's Flat, up to a hundred miners, some Chinese, prospected for gold in the sands on the riverbank around the 1860's. Today, people could take in the history, sip some local wine and pan for their own gold if so inclined. The Chinese theme was still present today as a bus load were getting into the Goldfields Jet jet boats and roaring up and down the river.

A bit further along we stopped again at Roaring Meg, the stream that roared. Roaring Meg is a turbulent stream that picks up plenty of water from the surrounding slopes and delivers it into the Kawarau River to the south. Three and a half kilometres up the New Zealanders built a ten metre high dam and around World War II built a couple of small power stations producing four thousand kilowatts between them. The newer of the two, the Upper Power Station, is located just below the dam with the other, the Lower Power Station sitting right on the river.

That was our last stop. We pulled up at the Novotel, unpacked our gear and ran into Brett who shared his experience of landing at Queenstown Airport with Justine next to him. The story goes that the landing was terrible, very bumpy, as is the usual at Queenstown. Justine was screaming and crying, snot everywhere. It was so bad that the woman in front gestured to Brett to calm her down as she was scaring the kids. He couldn't. We left Brett to his own devices for a while and went for a short walk around the town before reuniting back at the hotel. This time he had Justine with him and we quickly settled down for a few cocktails at the bar before looking around for a restaurant.

This ended up being in the shape of Coalfire, a second storey restaurant up one of the lanes. It was pretty late so we didn't know if they would welcome us. They did and we didn't regret it. They weren’t cheap but the menu looked a lot more inviting than the Tarras Café. The food was great and the perfect way to end a great day on the road.
Tumblr media
Interesting take on a roast. Excellent
If you have the time and don't worry about things that could go awry with little planning, to take to the road is the way to go. You see some great stuff.
Tomorrow the wedding.

Day 27. 25 Jan 2017 Departed Wanaka after breakfast for leisurely drive to Te Anau via Queenstown and the Crown Range. This is a popular ski area in winter and there were some great views along the way particularly from the summits. Stopped in Queenstown for lunch consisting of Ferg pies - New Zealander's certainly like their pies which come in variety of top quality fillings. When we return to Queenstown we plan on eating the even more famous Ferg burger! Got to Te Anau (gateway to Milford Sound) late afternoon and after walk along Lake Te Anau foreshore and then dinner, Jude and I went on late night visit to the Te Anau glowworm caves which was a real highlight and far more interesting than I was expecting. Involved 20 min trip across the lake on fast boat, introductory talk about glow worms. Did you know they spend 9 months as a larvae, which is the glow worm stage, before turning into a gnat for just a day or two and then they die. Mind you during that day they need to reproduce with as many partners as they can find so not all bad as some find over 100! After the talk we went on underground tour of the caves including a trip on a small boat along an underground river in total darkness where the sight of the glow worms on the cave ceiling above us looked like the brightest stars in the best night sky ever. A remarkable sight and although we didn't get home until midnight it was a really memorable evening.

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Photos Police Handouts“I’m teaching a bunch of little brats next year.”—Jeffrey Epstein, 1974-75 Dalton School YearbookIt took a clandestine FBI-NYPD joint sting operation to arrest the elusive convicted sex offender Jeffrey E. Epstein on Saturday July 6th on the tarmac of Teterboro airport in New Jersey (a story first broken by The Daily Beast). Simultaneously, a sledgehammer was used to break the entry to his massive $77 million New York City townhouse on East 71st Street. Police recovered hundreds, possibly thousands, of nude images of young women and girls—an automatic legal problem for a man who is on multiple sex offender registries. Epstein’s case may be one of the most extreme cases of organized child abuse in modern history.Epstein is without doubt the wealthiest individual on any sex offender registry in the United States (and he is at Level 3—at greatest risk of abusing more children). On his registry entry, the following residences are listed: his $7.8 million 70-acre private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands (his primary residence owned by his Delaware-based LLC, L.S.J.), his Paris apartment on Avenue Foch (one of the most expensive addresses in the world), his $15.5 million Palm Beach estate, his $77 million New York City townhouse (a gift from Victoria’s Secret founder Leslie Wexner), and his $10 million castle/ranch in New Mexico. At the bottom of his residences is another island in the Virgin Islands, Great St. James. Epstein purchased it in 2016 for $18 million and was actively (and without permit) developing an even larger compound on its 165 acres—that is, until his arrest this past Saturday. As far as vehicles, his offender registry entries list two Gulfstream jets (though his lawyers say he sold one of them in June), two helicopters, nine Mercedes-Benzes, nine Chevy Suburbans, three Cadillac Escalades, three Harley-Davidsons, one $375k Bentley Mulsanne, a jet-ski, and other assorted items. He has wined and dined American presidents, princes, elite academics, socialites, corporate CEOs and other VIPs. His alleged victims were little girls, often economically destitute or runaways or orphans—from sixth graders to high-school sophomores. Because his alleged crimes span multiple decades, his victims likely number in the hundreds—or more.* * *“Unnoticed by almost everybody, travelling with her was a greying, plumpish, middle-aged American businessman who managed to avoid the photographers.” —Mail on Sunday, Nov. 15, 1992 (London edition)That businessman was Jeffrey Epstein. In the early 1990s, British newspapers that followed British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell (alleged to be Epstein’s chief procurer of victims) tried to figure out who Epstein was. The Mail on Sunday asked in 1992: “But what is he—property developer, concert pianist, math teacher, corporate treasure hunter, stockbroker, merchant banker or globe-trotting businessman?” No one seemed to know.Given Epstein’s apparent mystique, I checked New York City’s birth, census, and marriage records to be certain about the facts. Epstein was born Jan. 20 1953 in Brooklyn, NY. His parents were Paula (nee Stolofsky, 1918-2004) and Seymour G. Epstein (1916-1991) and they were married in Brooklyn in 1952—shortly before Jeffrey Epstein’s birth.Epstein grew up during the 1950s and 1960s in the Lafayette neighborhood around Coney Island, as documented by James Patterson, John Connolly, and Tim Malloy in their 2016 book on Epstein, Filthy Rich. Epstein attended the now-shuttered Lafayette High School, a working-class high school that produced a significant number of professional baseball players. Epstein’s mother, Paula, was a homemaker while his father, Seymour, worked for the New York City Parks Department as a groundskeeper and gardener. During their retirement years, Epstein’s parents (as well as several maternal aunts) resided in nearby properties he purchased in West Palm Beach. In 1991, Epstein’s father passed away at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio at the age of 75. His mother passed away in 2004 at age 85 in Palm Beach.Epstein has a younger brother, Mark (“Puggy”), who has joined him in real-estate deals throughout the years. Mark operates a real-estate business, OSSA Properties, which owns some of the properties—including the apartments in the 301 East 66th Street building—where Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged sex slaves and other employees were housed (real-estate ownership between the brothers may have commingled).Jeffrey Epstein graduated from Lafayette High School in 1969 at age 16, having skipped two grades. He was “chubby with curly hair and a high, ‘hee-hee’ kind of laugh,” according to Filthy Rich. In the fall of 1969, Epstein started at Cooper Union and studied there for two years until the spring semester of 1971. Many writers say he attended New York University (NYU) after Cooper Union, but they rarely give specific dates. I decided to verify through National Student Clearinghouse records exactly when Epstein went to college and where. Cooper Union does not participate in the National Clearinghouse, but NYU does. It turned out that Epstein was enrolled at NYU between September of 1971 and June of 1974. Thus, most of Epstein’s college study years were spent at NYU. I verified that he did not graduate from NYU with their registrar. In a 2002 profile in New York magazine, Thomas Landon reported that Epstein studied at NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. It is not clear why Epstein attended two institutions of higher education but did not graduate from either. When Epstein joined the board of Rockefeller University, he misrepresented his educational and employment background; a press release stated that he had “studied physics at Cooper Union in New York and then joined Bear Stearns, becoming a Limited Partner until 1981.” Between Cooper Union and Bear Stearns, Epstein studied at NYU and was a teacher for two years (two unreported and significant events). When a convicted sex offender facing sex-trafficking charges was first employed as a teacher, it bears at least some scrutiny.* * *After the summer of 1974, Epstein began working as a teacher of mathematics and physics at the Dalton School in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It has been reported that he began there in 1973, but this is incorrect. I searched the 1973-74 Dalton yearbook and there is no mention of Jeffrey Epstein. I then searched Dalton’s school newspaper and found in the September 1974 issue that “... Mr. Epstein, who will also teach physics, [has] also joined the department this year.” Epstein also confirmed that he taught there between 1974 and 1976 in a deposition. In the United States, there are various schools that educate children from the social upper classes—Kent School, Horace Mann, Miss Porter’s. Dalton is among that set. These schools are often restricted to children from the “old money” stratum in society, with a small number of scholarship students or athletes from non-elite backgrounds. In 1974, Dalton was run by headmaster Donald Barr—father of Attorney General William Barr, whose Justice Department recently began a review of Epstein’s 2007 non-prosecution agreement for the Palm Beach child sexual assault charges. Writers have noted the interesting coincidence. However, Donald Barr resigned in turmoil in February of 1974 (according to the March 14, 1974 issue of The Daltonian) which was seven months before Jeffrey Epstein began teaching there that fall. While it is possible that Donald Barr may have hired Epstein, if he made personnel decisions long in advance, the Dalton School lost four math teachers (according to The Daltonian) prior to the 1974-75 school year. Therefore the school may have hired Epstein, in part, out of an urgent need to fill vacant positions—even though Epstein did not have a college degree.Peter Branch was the acting headmaster after Barr’s departure and he may have hired Epstein. Full verification would require access to Dalton’s personnel records, if they still retain them. I put a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request into the State of New York Department of Education and they reported having no teaching license on file for Epstein—this may suggest that he was not planning on a career in teaching. Unlike public schools, it should be noted, a private school like Dalton does not require its teachers to possess a state teaching license or certificate. While at the Dalton School, Epstein was the coach of the math team. In competitions with several local schools, Epstein led the students to victory in one instance and to second place in another. At a February 1976 math meet, the Dalton team competed against Ramaz and the Manhattan Talmudic Academy with “Boss Epstein watching from the sidelines…” (The Daltonian March 5, 1976). At another match up in April 1976, Epstein told his team “a victory would be as easy as Pi.” The paper reported Epstein would be starting a “math-track team” the following year due to his “unique philosophy of integrating physical exercise with spiritual and mathematical stimulation.” The Dalton School students and families are comprised of some of the wealthiest families in the United States—unlike Epstein’s own. But this access may have created an opening for him.As a young man from a working-class neighborhood in Brooklyn (equipped with a deep Brooklyn accent), Jeffrey Epstein at Dalton likely had to be a “quick study” to gracefully flow among the social upper class. Vicky Ward’s 2003 Vanity Fair profile of Epstein deemed him “The Talented Mr. Epstein”—drawing a parallel to Matt Damon’s character in the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley, where Tom Ripley cons his way into the upper class through fraud and misrepresentation (and plenty of piano playing). To wit, the April 1975 issue of The Daltonian covered a Parent-Teacher Association event, “the first parent-faculty musical in recent memory,” noting that “Mr. Epstein proved himself to be the ivory show man on the piano.” Was Epstein wooing and dazzling the parents as a means of gaining access to their rarefied world? It seems to have worked because a parent wondered what he was doing there and put him in touch with the chairman of Bear Stearns, Ace Greenberg (whose children also attended Dalton; Epstein may have tutored them). After the 1975-1976 school year was finished, Epstein informed the school he was not returning and began his career on Wall Street at Bear Stearns. After just four years, on August 1, 1980, Bear Stearns published an advert in The Wall Street Journal listing all the people who had made limited partner, including Jeffrey E. Epstein (along with people such as Larry Kudlow, former CNBC commentator and current director of the National Economic Council). Epstein, it seemed, was on the path, to accumulating the economic riches necessary for entry into the one percent. Obtaining the social graces required for acceptance by the social upper class would come much later with the help of several socialites, but mostly Ghislaine Maxwell.* * *Epstein was permitted to plead guilty to charges of soliciting prostitution in 2008 in the State of Florida. However, his victims were children, and it has been widely pointed out, cannot give consent, and therefore cannot be prostitutes. (Epstein’s lawyers tried to tarnish and humiliate the victims at the time by calling them “prostitutes,” and, as Vanity Fair revealed, Epstein reportedly smeared the underage girls in private as “prostitutes and strippers who’d already been indoctrinated into the sex world.”) Such lax charges in the Florida case, compared to what he is now facing, were hashed out in a deal with Florida State Attorney Barry Krischer, in conjunction with Alexander Acosta (who just stepped down as President Trump's labor secretary over his role in the Epstein saga). The deal was protested by the highly professional Palm Beach police led by Chief Michael Reiter and the late Detective Joseph Recarey. Epstein’s 2019 charges are for crimes committed in New York and Florida between 2002 and 2005. However, there are allegations against Epstein from earlier time periods (such as Maria Farmer’s 2019 sworn affidavit that she and her 15-year old sibling were assaulted by Epstein and Maxwell in various locations in 1996—allegations that were reportedly nixed by an editor from Vicky Ward’s 2003 profile of Epstein). One thing to keep in mind is Epstein was a school teacher and would have had possible access to victims there as well. There are no reports that he did anything at Dalton school, but he was asked about his relations with students in a deposition in 2009 and here is what he said:Deposition His answer about the ages of his students is noteworthy. He replies “Mostly old—mostly 17 and 18.” This tells us that Epstein thinks that the ages of 17 and 18 are “old.” He is asked what subject he was teaching, and he answers truthfully, physics and mathematics. The attorney asks if any of the girls he was teaching were under age 17 at the time, and Epstein answers that he does not know—this sounds genuine. Things take a turn when the attorney asks Epstein if he had any sexual contact with any students at Dalton. Epstein answers the first time with a question, “Again?” He is asked a second time and again answers with a question, “While I was a teacher?” The attorney says yes, let’s start with that question and Epstein gives a solid “no.” The attorney presses “How about after?” and Epstein says “Not that I remember.”In summary, Epstein revealed that he feels high-school students aged 17 to 18 years are “old” and he that he does not remember if he had sexual contact with Dalton students after he was a teacher there. The final time he is asked, he reads from a statement in which he claims that the attorney’s law firm is engaged in fraud and then pleads his Fifth Amendment rights. Questions about sexual contact with Dalton students appear to be sensitive for him. Epstein depositions are extremely difficult to read because he pleads the Fifth to almost every question—as he eventually does here.* * *Julie Brown of the Miami Herald has done a significant amount of research on the Epstein case with her and her colleagues’ award-winning Perversion of Justice series. The extensive reporting in the Miami Herald, The Daily Beast, and by independent journalists like Ed Opperman, Pearse Redmond, William Ramsey and others has likely influenced law enforcement to consider the new evidence uncovered by the press—including possible new locations where recruitment or abuse might have occurred.Related to Epstein’s deposition above, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who accused Epstein of sexually abusing her as an underage girl and loaning her out to his famous friends, claimed that Epstein “lost interest” as she got older and sent her to Thailand to bring him another victim, at which point she says she escaped from Epstein.Another alarming detail about Epstein is reported in Vicky Ward’s 2003 Vanity Fair article. She noted that Epstein left a paperback copy of the Marquis de Sade’s The Misfortunes of Virtue lying on a table at his 71st Street townhouse. Why would Epstein have left this book out in plain view? This obscene novel (even Napoleon ordered its author jailed) is about a 12-year-old French girl, Justine, who travels alone across France and winds up in a monastery and is forced to become the sex slave of monks where she endures repeated sexual assaults and is ordered to participate in orgies. She escapes but suffers similar abuses and encounters as the story follows her life until the age of 26.Justine may have been a pedophile’s fantasy story in which the victim somehow learns “virtue” from what she endures. Justine almost parallels the life of some of Epstein’s alleged victims. What is even more tragic is that in the course of her reporting, Ward found two of Epstein’s victims and their mother. Ward says they detailed in 2003 how Epstein sexually assaulted them in the mid-1990s—including the time when one was allegedly held captive for 12 hours at mogul Leslie Wexner’s Ohio property after she says Epstein and Maxwell assaulted her. (Wexner has not responded to the allegations.) Perhaps their stories might have been able to deter or expose Epstein earlier, if they had been published when the girls first came forward. We can expect a trove of information about Epstein to continue to emerge now that he is in jail. Indeed, the Miami Herald reports that at least a dozen new victims have come forward since his arrest. Epstein and his accomplices may have seen his victims as little girls—but now they are strong, brave women fighting back today.Thomas Volscho is a sociology professor at the City University of New York, College of Staten Island. Jeffrey Epstein Dodged Questions About Sex With His Dalton Prep-School Students
He has been researching the case of Jeffrey Epstein for a book he is writing.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Winter 2017 in Margate
Tumblr media
Now that summer is over (although as we write we’re experiencing a very late October heatwave on the Kent coast..!) we’re now looking ahead to what’s on over the winter months in Margate. We love this time of year - it’s a chance to explore the town in a different light and it’s also when we think the natural beauty of the coastline is at it’s best.
Here are some ideas for things to do, visit and experience in Margate and the surrounding areas this winter. Please note we have not been asked to promote anything - these are our personal recommendations to guests and friends.
Iconic art
From Friday 13 Oct 2017 to Sunday 14 Jan 2018, the Turner Contemporary is exhibiting the work of two world famous artists with a passion for Margate.
Tumblr media
Tracey Emin returns to the town she grew up in for ‘My Bed / JMW Turner’ - a chance to see her infamous unmade bed and also a selection of the best Margate paintings from Turner, as chosen by Emin. You can hear her thoughts on the exhibition here >
Tumblr media
If you fancy recreating your own Turner painting, a stroll along the Viking Coastal Trail, which runs along the beach opposite No. 7 by the Sea, will provide lots of great skies this time of year.
Tumblr media
Christmas and NYE
Many plans are still being finalised but there are a few Margate Christmas and NYE traditions that we’re sure will continue in 2017.
Turner Christmas celebrations - confirmed 2nd / 3rd December
There will be a makers market and the lights will be switched on with mulled wine and mince pies to celebrate! More info here >
The Wizard of Oz pantomine @The Theatre Royal - confirmed 9th - 31st December
The classic story re-told in panto. Book here >
Christmas 2017 @ The Margate Museum - confirmed 1st November - 22nd January
A look at how Christmas was celebrated during WW1. Details here >
Ramsgate Illuminations - confirmed 1st - 31st December
A short drive down the coast from Margate is Ramsgate, where every year the berth owners and local businesses in the harbour decorate their boats and the surrounding areas with lights. You can follow the action here >
Christmas @ Dreamland - TBC throughout December
Dreamland hasn’t yet released its plans for Christmas 2017, but traditionally they have celebrated with live music, visits from Father Christmas, a vintage market and much more. With a new refurbishment earlier on this summer, we’re expecting this year to be even bigger and better. You can view last year’s activities here >
New Year’s Day swim @ Walpole Bay - TBC 1st January
This year saw Margate’s historic tidal pool celebrate its 80th birthday, and as part of those celebrations people took part in a New Year’s Day swim. Plans for this year are yet confirmed, but we think there’s no better way to mark a fresh new year ahead than with a sea swim! Check out this account from one of last year’s swimmers >
Tumblr media
Head underground
If you want to escape from the winter weather then there are a few underground options in Thanet!
Shell Grotto, Margate
The Shell Grotto is a series of underground passages leading to a secret chamber, decorated with over 4.6 million shells. The story goes that in 1835, a resident of the building above lowered his son into a hole in the ground that appeared whilst digging a duck pond and he discovered the grotto. But no one knows why it was built and by whom. Theories include an ancient pagan temple and a meeting place for a secret cult, which are both documented in the small museum above the grotto - but it’s unlikely the mystery will ever be solved... Visiting details can be found here >
Tumblr media
Ramsgate Tunnels
On to Ramsgate and another underground adventure, this time on a tour of Ramsgate Tunnels, two miles of bomb-proof, deep shelter tunnels built to protect civilians during WWII. During the darkest days of the war, the tunnels evolved into an underground city with over 1,000 permanent residents. You can find details of the tours here >
Tumblr media
Warm grub
Finally, what better way to spend a winter’s afternoon than with some hearty food. Our Margate recommendations are as follows:
Cinque Ports
Buoy and Oyster
Olby’s Soul Cafe
The Ambrette
Tumblr media
No. 7 by the Sea is available to rent via Airbnb, and we’ve still got a few weekends free this winter, including at Christmas. We’d love to have you stay - you can book here !

He has been researching the case of Jeffrey Epstein for a book he is writing.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day.
