472. Pelle Svanslos (AKA Peter No-Tail) (1981)

A Swedish movie about an adopted barn cat named Pelle who struggles against antagonistic neighboring alley cats to prove his worth to his family and his girlfriend. Fortunately, these feline agitators’ antics often backfire and only serve to promote Pelle’s position in society.

Although not exactly mind-blowing, this movie has a lot going for it, including pretty good animation (despite the unusually shaky linework) and a surprisingly fun soundtrack. The English subtitles don’t capture all the plays on words and puns in the dialogue, but it sounds to my incognizant ears like the original Swedish script has a penchant for wordplay akin to Walt Kelly’s Pogo.

“Pelle is a cat who was born without a proper tail. He is taken care of by a family living in Uppsala. Without a tail, he becomes the talk of the town among the other cats, and especially Måns, who teases him cruelly. Måns' rough and silly courting of Maja Gräddnos does not impress her, since she becomes interested in the kind and gentle Pelle. But Måns won't give up that easy...”
