Markets trade lower after initial optimism ahead of RBI policy decision
Punjab FC is hoping to be more clinical in front of goal than it has managed in recent matches when it faces Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday. Having not registered a single victory since beating Mohammedan on December 6 — the Panagiotis Dilmperis-coached side has had two draws and four losses in the last six matches — it needs to get…

Images: X With Mohun Bagan already having crossed the finishing line with aplomb, defending the Shield with two matches to spare and securing the highest points tally ever in the league, the remaining two weeks of the Indian Super League (ISL) group stage will now see attention shift to the intense playoff race. Alongside Mohun Bagan, FC Goa (42 points from 21 games) and Jamshedpur FC (37 points from 21 games) have also secured their places in the playoffs. However, there are still three spots up for grabs. Bengaluru FC (4th with 34 points from 21 games), North East United FC (32 points from 22 games), and Mumbai City FC (32 points from 21 games) are just one win away from sealing their place in the top six. Meanwhile, Odisha FC, Chennaiyin FC, East Bengal FC, Kerala Blasters and Punjab FC still have a glimmer of hope. They must win all their remaining games and hope that other results go in their favour. With the top three spots already secured and eight teams still in contention for the playoffs, here’s a look at their remaining matches and qualification scenarios: Bengaluru FC Gerard Zaragoza’s side started the season in dominant fashion, remaining unbeaten in their first six games. However, they struggled to maintain their momentum, losing their position at the top of the table to Mohun Bagan and FC Goa mid-season. Sunil Chhetri and Co. will face Chennaiyin FC at home, East Bengal away, and Mumbai City FC at home in their remaining fixtures. Currently sitting in 4th place, their chances of finishing second—which would allow them to bypass the playoffs and go straight to the semi-finals—look slim. However, two wins from their remaining three matches will be enough to confirm their place in the playoffs. NorthEast United FC The Durand Cup champions have the playoffs within their grasp and need just one win from their last two games—against Chennaiyin FC (A) and East Bengal (H)—to cement their spot. Their season has been a rollercoaster, and they even had a chance to surpass their best-ever ISL campaign (2020-21 under Khalid Jamil). However, back-to-back defeats at their new home ground in Shillong have hindered their progress. If Juan Pedro Benali’s side can recover in their final two matches, they could make their fans proud by securing their third-ever ISL playoff appearance. Mumbai City FC It has been a challenging season for the defending ISL Cup champions compared to their last two campaigns. Peter Kratky’s side has suffered numerous injuries to key players, but they managed to revive their campaign mid-season and are now back in playoff contention, giving their fans something to cheer about. With a direct semi-final spot out of reach, the Islanders—currently 6th with 32 points from 21 games—must win two of their last three matches to secure a playoff berth. However, their upcoming fixtures present a tough challenge: they face league winners Mohun Bagan at home before traveling to Kerala Blasters and Bengaluru FC. Odisha FC Following their dramatic defeat to Mohun Bagan, Odisha FC faces an uphill battle to stay in the playoff race. Even if they win their remaining two matches, their qualification hopes depend on NorthEast United and Mumbai City FC dropping points. If Bengaluru FC and NorthEast win at least one of their remaining games and Mumbai City FC secures a win and a draw from their last three fixtures, Odisha’s playoff dreams will end. Sergio Lobera’s side seemed on track to secure their third consecutive playoff appearance, but Roy Krishna’s injury and Ahmed Jahouh’s controversial contract termination has dealt them a significant blow. Chennaiyin FC, East Bengal, Kerala Blasters, and Punjab FC While playoff qualification seems like a distant dream, these four teams still have a mathematical chance.
Chennaiyin FC (24 points from 21 games) lead the pack, followed by East Bengal, Kerala Blasters, and Punjab FC. To stand any chance, they must win all their remaining fixtures and hope that NorthEast and Mumbai City FC lose all of theirs. While the odds are stacked against them, they will still push for a strong finish to the season. With the playoffs fast approaching, every game will be crucial as teams battle for the remaining three spots. The coming weeks promise intense action and high drama as the ISL group stage nears its conclusion. ISL matchweek 4 comes to an end
The final matchday of India's top division before the international break featured a double-header, with Jamshedpur FC facing East Bengal at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, while defending champions Mohun Bagan SG took on newly promoted Mohammedan Sporting Club in what could be considered a mini Kolkata derby.
Jamshedpur FC 2:0 East Bengal
The Red & Gold Brigade extended their losing streak to four matches in the Super League, struggling to find the back of the net despite doing much else correctly. After Carles Cuadrat's resignation, Bino George took over as interim manager, but the change has yet to yield positive results. Meanwhile, Khalid Jamil's Jamshedpur are enjoying their best-ever start to the league, accumulating nine points from four matches with three wins and one loss. Rei Tachikawa opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a long-range strike, a potential goal of the season contender. Despite dominating the game, East Bengal's efforts came to nothing. They came close to equalizing in the 64th minute when Cleiton Silva was fouled in the box by Javi Hernandez, earning a penalty. However, Albino Gomes, who was solid throughout the match, saved the penalty. East Bengal conceded again shortly after due to an own goal by Chungnunga Lal, marking a disastrous day for the 2024 Super Cup winners. On the other hand, Khalid Jamil continues to exceed expectations with Jamshedpur, a relatively modest squad, and only time will tell if he can lead them to glory.
Mohun Bagan SG 3:0 Mohammedan SC
Today's victory will provide Jose Molina with some much-needed relief. Over the past week, fans had been highly critical following a heavy defeat to Bengaluru FC, questioning his tactics and game-reading abilities as the defending champions struggled to find their form in the league. This match was crucial for Molina, as a loss could have resulted in his departure back to Spain. Mohun Bagan started strongly, with Jamie Maclaren scoring his debut ISL goal in his first start, capitalizing on a header from Greg Stewart's pass in the 8th minute. The attacking momentum continued, and by the 36th minute, Bagan extended their lead to 3-0, with Captain Bose and Stewart each scoring and assisting one another. At that point, the match was effectively decided. Bagan had additional opportunities throughout, but failed to capitalize, seemingly more focused on maintaining a clean sheet given their comfortable lead. The win concluded ISL matchweek 4, with Bagan moving up to 4th place in the league table, boasting two wins, one draw, and one loss.

Jamshedpur fc won the match :

[ad_1] Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) are just six points away from defending their ISL League Shield, aiming to become the first club in history to win it back to back. With four matches in hand, the Green-and-Maroon Brigade now travel south to Kochi for a crucial encounter against Kerala Blasters, and a passionate home crowd. Blasters, currently on 24 points from 19 games, are desperate to break into the top six despite missing two key players — Noah Sadaoui (minor injury) and Kwame Peprah (suspension). The Blasters will also be looking to avenge their reverse-fixture defeat and back-to-back home losses to Mohun Bagan in previous seasons. On the other hand, Mohun Bagan arrive in flawless form, unbeaten in their last eight outings. However, as they inch closer to the Shield, head coach José Molina remained cautious. He believed this is the most crucial phase of the campaign and was determined to keep his squad focused. “The Shield is within our reach, but we must go and take it,” Molina said animatedly before flying to Kochi. “Now is the time to concentrate more than ever. We cannot relax—nobody can relax. It would be a huge mistake to do so at this stage.” No Long-Term Goals, Just Three Points Molina acknowledged how close his team are to sealing the prestigious League Shield, but he refused to look too far ahead. His sole focus is securing three points against Kerala. “Right now, my only concern is going to Kochi, helping my players, playing a strong match, and winning three points,” he said. “That’s the only goal—to get closer to achieving the Shield.” A moment from the reverse fixture between these two teams. Image: ISL Injury Concerns for Mohun Bagan Mohun Bagan will have to work hard without two of their key players—Ashish Rai and Sahal Abdul Samad, both ruled out due to injury. Anirudh Thapa has almost recovered, but Molina is unwilling to take any risks and will rest him for a few more days. Sahal, who would have loved to play in front of his former club’s fans, will unfortunately miss the game. Dipendu Biswas, the star performer in Mohun Bagan’s 3-0 win over Punjab FC, is expected to replace Ashish Rai, while Deepak Tangri will partner Apuia in midfield in Sahal’s absence. Tom Aldred and Apuia also return from suspension, giving Molina some much-needed squad depth. Fond Memories in Kochi for Molina For Molina, Kochi holds special memories—he lifted the ISL Trophy here in his first stint in India with Atlético de Kolkata. Now, he looks forward to another triumphant outing at the same venue. “Kochi is a fantastic city,” said Molina. “I have great memories here, and I’m happy to return. I am confident that we can play well and secure three points.” Final Stretch: Aiming for Perfection With Jamshedpur already out of the Shield race, only FC Goa remain as Mohun Bagan’s last challenger. However, Molina’s squad has been dominant throughout the season, and they are determined to prove they are the best team in the league. “We have to prove that we are the best because we want to win the Shield,” said Molina. The mission is clear—no room for slip-ups, no margin for error. If they maintain their momentum, history awaits.
