[ad_1] Anwar Ali in action against Jamshedpur FC It was the 95th minute on the clock, and East Bengal FC was leading 1-0 against Jamshedpur FC. Nikhil Barla of Jamshedpur FC chested down a long ball inside East Bengal’s box, poised to take a shot on target. That’s when Anwar Ali made a heroic, goal-saving tackle from behind, preserving the lead and giving the fans a collective sigh of relief. The Punjab-born defender has been a revelation for East Bengal FC, playing in three different positions in their last three games. Against Odisha FC, he featured in his natural role as a central defender. However, after Saul Crespo and Madih Talal suffered injuries and Jeakson Singh was unavailable due to a red card, against Punjab FC, head coach Oscar Bruzon turned to Anwar to shoulder the responsibilities in midfield. Although it took Anwar some time to adapt to his new role in the first half, he excelled in the second. Against Jamshedpur FC, even with Jeakson’s return from suspension, Oscar continued to deploy Anwar in midfield. The versatile defender nearly scored a spectacular goal when his long-range effort struck the woodwork within 10 minutes of taking the field. However, East Bengal’s persistent injury woes forced another change in plans. Mohammed Rakip limped off in the first half. Despite having options like Provat Lakra and Nishu Kumar on the bench, Oscar once again trusted Anwar, deploying him as a right-back. The results spoke for themselves: Anwar’s defensive solidity, capped by his last-minute tackle, showcased his extraordinary ability to adapt and deliver under pressure. After the match, Bruzon was full of praise for the defender. “Anwar is a top player, top guy, and a top person. He’s a team man,” said the coach. “Every time I’ve asked him to play in a different position, he has never complained. He knows he is in the service of the team. In every role, he proves that he is one of the best players in that area. So, we should be very happy and proud to have such a good player in our squad. Bruzon emphasised how proud East Bengal is to have such a versatile talent in their squad. Anwar’s start with East Bengal was not without its challenges. The transition from Mohun Bagan to their arch-rivals was accompanied by intense scrutiny. Every defensive lapse or goal conceded from his side drew criticism and ridicule on social media, with trolls and memes targeting the player. Carrying the tag of one of the league’s costliest signings only added to the pressure. However, Anwar has tackled these challenges with the same composure he displays on the field. Under Bruzon’s guidance, he is rediscovering his best form. Joining East Bengal amid high expectations, Anwar is steadily meeting and even exceeding them as the season progresses. As the fans cheer for their team, they can be rest assured that Anwar is there, standing tall, guarding the fort. ISL matchweek 4 comes to an end
The final matchday of India's top division before the international break featured a double-header, with Jamshedpur FC facing East Bengal at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, while defending champions Mohun Bagan SG took on newly promoted Mohammedan Sporting Club in what could be considered a mini Kolkata derby.
Jamshedpur FC 2:0 East Bengal
The Red & Gold Brigade extended their losing streak to four matches in the Super League, struggling to find the back of the net despite doing much else correctly. After Carles Cuadrat's resignation, Bino George took over as interim manager, but the change has yet to yield positive results. Meanwhile, Khalid Jamil's Jamshedpur are enjoying their best-ever start to the league, accumulating nine points from four matches with three wins and one loss. Rei Tachikawa opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a long-range strike, a potential goal of the season contender. Despite dominating the game, East Bengal's efforts came to nothing. They came close to equalizing in the 64th minute when Cleiton Silva was fouled in the box by Javi Hernandez, earning a penalty. However, Albino Gomes, who was solid throughout the match, saved the penalty. East Bengal conceded again shortly after due to an own goal by Chungnunga Lal, marking a disastrous day for the 2024 Super Cup winners. On the other hand, Khalid Jamil continues to exceed expectations with Jamshedpur, a relatively modest squad, and only time will tell if he can lead them to glory.
Mohun Bagan SG 3:0 Mohammedan SC
Today's victory will provide Jose Molina with some much-needed relief. Over the past week, fans had been highly critical following a heavy defeat to Bengaluru FC, questioning his tactics and game-reading abilities as the defending champions struggled to find their form in the league. This match was crucial for Molina, as a loss could have resulted in his departure back to Spain. Mohun Bagan started strongly, with Jamie Maclaren scoring his debut ISL goal in his first start, capitalizing on a header from Greg Stewart's pass in the 8th minute. The attacking momentum continued, and by the 36th minute, Bagan extended their lead to 3-0, with Captain Bose and Stewart each scoring and assisting one another. At that point, the match was effectively decided. Bagan had additional opportunities throughout, but failed to capitalize, seemingly more focused on maintaining a clean sheet given their comfortable lead. The win concluded ISL matchweek 4, with Bagan moving up to 4th place in the league table, boasting two wins, one draw, and one loss.

[ad_1] Left: Dimitrios Diamantakos. Right: Saul Crespo. Pictures Courtesy: East Bengal FC When things were finally falling into place for East Bengal in the ISL, the club suffered a massive blow. Having returned from Chennai with their first away win of the season and three consecutive clean sheets – a first in their ISL history – East Bengal now face a serious setback due to injuries to two key players, Dimitrios Diamantakos and Saul Crespo. Both players were subbed off during the game against Chennaiyin FC after feeling discomfort on the pitch. Scans conducted on Monday revealed that Saul Crespo has sustained a hamstring pull, ruling him out for a month. This means he will miss crucial games in December and is also likely to be absent for the highly anticipated Kolkata derby against Mohun Bagan in January. The situation is worse as Diamantakos, their Greek forward, is set to miss the upcoming game against Odisha FC due to a groin injury, an issue he has struggled with previously. His availability for the match against Punjab FC remains uncertain. Diamantakos had been in sensational form recently, contributing six goals and one assist in his last six matches for the Red-and-Gold brigade. In his absence, Cleiton Silva, though not in his prime, will need to step up and ensure the team doesn’t feel the absence of their in-form striker. The absence of Crespo, team captain and midfield stalwart, leaves an even bigger void. Head coach Oscar Bruzon will have to rely on Indian midfielders Souvik Chakrabarti and Jeakson Singh to shoulder the midfield responsibilities. Bruzon has previously highlighted the importance of December in determining East Bengal’s top-six aspirations. The team have three consecutive home games – against Odisha FC (December 12), Punjab FC (December 17) and Jamshedpur FC (December 21) – before traveling to Hyderabad to face the Nizams on December 28. East Bengal must capitalise on their home advantage in these critical fixtures if they hope to improve their position on the table. However, playing without both Crespo for a month and Diamantakos for at least two matches will be a tough challenge. Notably, East Bengal struggled in a similar situation last season when Crespo missed all of February due to injury, managing only two wins from six games during that period. Just as East Bengal’s fortunes seemed to be turning, these two injuries have struck at a pivotal phase. The question now is whether Bruzon can rally his team to overcome these challenges and guide them through this difficult period. So far, he has demonstrated remarkable resilience and tactical acumen, passing every test with grit. Now, tougher trials await the Spanish coach as he looks to keep East Bengal’s playoff hopes alive.
