Wertheim said ppl in Andy's family/ inner circle told him he needed to take Nole up on it or he'd regret missing the chsnce. I wonder if 'people' means Judy or there's a more complex dynamic there. (Though I assume he wouldn't do it if Kim said no).
Well rumours, rumours. But seeing as I started a fic yesterday which literally has as its opening line "It's actually all Judy's fault, Novak can't help but think, as his finger hovers over the 'post' button nervously." I am inclined to agree that Judy may have had something to do with this :D
I think it's unlikely that it would have been Jamie who told him he should do it (though who knows) and I agree Andy wouldn't do it if Kim said no but I also don't think there are many situations in which Kim would be likely to veto that kind of decision.
The main reason why Andy would have said no to lots of other top players is that he would have to be on tour the whole year, which is not the case with Novak who picks and chooses where he plays. Still, it's probably a bigger commitment than he initially thought to take on so soon after retirement, which is perhaps also why he's only commited to the Australian Open for now, as far as I understand it (I am 100% sure it's Andy who insisted on that). Also Andy would be cagey and 'let's see how it goes' about it while Novak is clearly more enthusiastic (I am still smiling about him producing a whole video just to announce a coaching change). Oh and another thing, I can most definitely see Andy hesitating not because he didn't want to do it but because he didn't think he was qualified for this, considering he hasn't coached before.
Obligatory disclaimer that obviously, I don't know these people at all, this is just me rambling.

RTARL PRESENTS COLLEGE FOOTBALL TV WATCH EM UPS 2023 SEASON: Week 8
Tumblr media
I am completely out of sorts with this college football season. Miami being good so far and ranked #6 feels like a trick that can only end badly for me if I let myself get wrapped up in it. Can you believe it’s already rivalry week with the Canes playing host to the ghastly Florida State Seminoles, probably the worst preseason top 10 team of all time? If ever there was a game to embarrass the whole state of Florida it would be the Noles posting a fourth straight win over Miami. Hope for the best, expect the worst, accept and laugh at even worse than you could imagine. That’s the American way.
In other news it’s the biggest weekend of Spooky Season and I find myself desperately missing my favorite event in Los Angeles, the Aero Theater’s annual Horrorthon. For $35 you get to hang out in and around an old single screen theater in one of the bougiest neighborhoods in the country and watch a bunch of old horror movies and crazy interstitial programs (the first time I saw Too Many Cooks I assumed it was put on by the same people) for 16 straight hours and eat junk (Little Caesar’s, Subway, popcorn, Peet’s coffee and whatever energy drink the Cinematheque acquired this year) while surrounded by a community of fellow dorks (complimentary) in costume who wait all year for this.
Well, I can’t be in Santa Monica this weekend but I can still watch horror movies and eat junk. To that end, here is my hoped for playlist for a Horrorthon At Home ‘24:
TRAP (2024), dir: M. Night Shyamalan - This looks so silly it makes my teeth hurt. Does that make sense? No. Perfect.
THE MUMMY (1932), dir: Karl Freund - You can’t have a proper spooky movie marathon without at least one Universal monster and this one is streaming on Prime Video.
HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH (1982), dir: Tommy Lee Wallace - The first time I watched this movie as an adult was at the Horrorthon and people believe me when I tell you Tom Atkins is cinema’s greatest hunk.
SINISTER (2012), dir: Scott Derrickson - Twelve years old already? Sigh. Time she is a goner.
THE MOUSE TRAP (2024), dir: Jamie Bailey - Looks pretty bad. Would be fun to heckle.
GORGO (1961), dir: Eugene Lourie - It’s a knockoff Godzilla. Gotta keep things light.
JENNIFER’S BODY (2009), dir: Karyn Kusama - I’ve never actually watched it. No time like the present.
THE BEYOND (1981), dir: Lucio Fulci - You have to close things out with something a little hard to watch. I’ve not seen this one but Italian horror movies are usually splatterfests so this should do it.
Design your own Horrorthon in the comments and have a spooky Halloween!

Sweet 16 teams in men’s March Madness, ranked by their national title chances
Tumblr media
These the best teams left standing in the Sweet 16.
The field of 68 that entered the 2021 men’s NCAA tournament a week ago has been trimmed to only 16 teams left standing. After a historic opening weekend defined by a run of upsets by double-digit seeds, the tournament now gives way to the Sweet 16 starting on March 27.
Oral Roberts, Syracuse, Oregon State, and UCLA have each advanced in the bracket after some shocking wins so far. The Pac-12 has been incredible, going undefeated in the first round and sitting at 9-1 overall thus far. The Big Ten has been disappointing, with top seed Illinois and No. 2 seeds Iowa and Ohio State all getting eliminated early, and only Michigan still left standing.
Before the tournament hits the second weekend, we decided to look at all 16 teams remaining in the field and rank them by their odds of winning the whole thing. These are the strongest teams left in March Madness.
16. Oral Roberts (No. 15 seed)
For the second time in NCAA tournament history, a No. 15 seed has won two games to advance to the Sweet 16. The Golden Eagles stunned No. 2 seed Ohio State in a dramatic overtime victory in the opening round, then took out another power program in the round of 32 when they outlasted No. 7 seed Florida. This is one of the most startling tournament runs ever, but Arkansas shouldn’t take them lightly in the Sweet 16.
Oral Roberts guard Max Abmas led DI in scoring this season at 24.2 points per game entering the tournament, and he’s exceeded that total in both wins on this run. Abmas has a tremendous co-star in 6’8 junior forward Kevin Obanor, who followed up his 30-point, 11 rebound performance against the Buckeyes by dropping 28 points and 11 rebounds on the Gators. The Summit League champs deserve respect for this run, and it’s not over yet.
15. Creighton (No. 5 seed)
The Bluejays are going to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1974, and a matchup with undefeated Gonzaga is waiting for them next. Creighton was on the ropes against UC Santa Barbara in the opening round, but they came away with a one-point win in the final seconds. Their next game against No. 13 seed Ohio, who previously upset Virginia, was considerably easier, with the Bluejays coasting to a 72-58 victory.
Junior point guard Marcus Zegarowski is the engine for Creighton, and he has an experienced cast of shooters around him led by Mitch Ballock. The question with Creighton is always if they can get enough stops on defense. Good luck against a Gonzaga team that has one of the most efficient offenses in the history of the sport. Just getting this far after so many failed attempts at a run to the second weekend in recent years has to feel good for the Bluejays.
14. Syracuse (No. 11 seed)
Why does it always seem like Syracuse is at its best when they have a double-digit seed? The Orange were again selected as one of the last teams in the tournament, and are again marching to the second weekend. Jim Boeheim’s zone defense has stifled No. 6 seed San Diego State and No. 3 seed West Virginia so far. Boeheim’s son Buddy is becoming a breakout tournament star, combining for 55 points and 13 three-pointers across the two wins.
This is the third time in the last five tournaments that Syracuse has made the Sweet 16 with a double-digit seed. The Houston Cougars are the next team that will attempt to solve the zone, and seem to have enough shooting to have a chance. At this point, though, every game against the Orange feels like it’s going to be a major pain if nothing else.
13. UCLA (No. 11 seed)
The Bruins barely snuck into the tournament after losing their last four games before Selection Sunday, but suddenly look dangerous after three straight wins in the tournament. UCLA started its run with a comeback victory over Michigan State in the First Four, then dispatched No. 6 seed BYU, and knocked out No. 14 seed Abilene Christian (who shocked Texas in the opening round) to reach the Sweet 16.
UCLA is powered by a pair of dynamic 6’6 shot-makers on the wing in Kentucky transfer Johnny Juzang and sophomore Jamie Jaquez. Big man Cody Riley and wing Jules Bernard have also been solid contributors during this run. UCLA plays a slow pace and makes its threes even if they don’t take many. There’s no doubt this team is peaking at the right time.
12. Villanova (No. 5 seed)
Reports of the Wildcats’ demise after a season-ending injury to starting point guard Collin Gillespie were greatly exaggerated. No. 12 seed Winthrop was a popular pick to upset the Wildcats in round one (guilty), but Nova won by double-digits. Jay Wright’s team then pounded Cinderella North Texas in the round of 32 to set up a Sweet 16 matchup with Baylor that could be the best game of the round.
Villanova is full of skilled size with Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Jermaine Samuels leading the way up front. Nova has the lowest turnover percentage in the country, takes a ton of threes, and plays a slow pace that should benefit them against a powerhouse like Baylor. Any matchup against the Bears is an extraordinary test, but the Wildcats have the talent to compete.
11. Arkansas (No. 3 seed)
The Hogs took care of business in the opening round despite Colgate being a popular upset pick entering the tournament. Things got much more difficult in the round of 32 against Chris Beard and Texas Tech, but Arkansas held on for a thrilling 68-66 victory to push the program into the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1996.
Arkansas has a future NBA lottery pick in Moses Moody, a long 6’6 wing with deep shooting range and the ability to get his own bucket in a pinch. Indiana transfer Justin Smith is another athletic wing who had a tremendous game vs. Texas Tech. Arkansas’ defense will give them a chance to compete with any team, but not much comes easy offensively in the halfcourt. A potential Elite Eight game with Baylor would be a serious challenge, but they shouldn’t think a win against Oral Roberts will come easy given how well the Golden Eagles have played thus far.
10. Oregon State (No. 12 seed)
Oregon State needed to go on a Cinderella run in the Pac-12 tournament just to earn their bid to the big dance, but ever since they’ve been one of the hottest teams in the country. The Beavers blew out a Tennessee team with multiple lottery picks from the opening tip in their first round game, then knocked out future No. 1 overall NBA draft pick Cade Cunningham and Oklahoma State in a round of 32 thriller.
Oregon State’s shooters have been on fire since the conference tournament, and they also have the size up front to compete with anyone. Senior guard Ethan Thompson (26 points vs. Oklahoma State) is playing like a star right now. Loyola-Chicago will be a tough matchup, but discount the Beavers at your own peril.
9. Oregon (No. 7 seed)
The Ducks were on the receiving end of the type of luck no team wants when they were given a free pass to the round of 32 after their first round opponent VCU failed Covid protocol. Oregon proved how good it could be against Iowa two days later, crushing the No. 2 seed Hawkeyes thanks to dynamic performances from lead guards Chris Duarte and Will Richardson.
Oregon doesn’t have much size or much depth, but the tight rotation was enough to knock out presumptive national player of the year Luka Garza. It’s a team that can really shoot (38 percent from deep, a top-20 mark in America) and plays at a controlled pace. The Ducks have been on fire since Richardson returned to the lineup in early Feb. The win over Iowa didn’t feel like a fluke. The next game against USC feels like a toss up.
8. Houston (No. 2 seed)
The Cougars were on the ropes against No. 10 seed Rutgers in the round of 32, but out-scored the Scarlett Knights 23-10 over the final 10 minutes to steal the victory and punch their ticket to the Sweet 16. It wasn’t a pretty performance from Kelvin Sampson’s crew, but their body of work as a whole suggests this team has a very real shot at making the Final Four.
Houston takes threes on 42 percent of their possessions, and has the shooters to make them. The three-guard lineup of Quentin Grimes, Marcus Sasser, and DeJon Jarreau can all handle, pass, and shoot at this level. Sampson has a team that currently boasts the No. 7 overall offense and No. 12 overall defense in DI. Facing Syracuse’s zone won’t be easy, but Houston deserves to be the favorite entering the game.
7. USC (No. 6 seed)
The Trojans blew out No. 11 seed Drake in their opener, and then looked even more impressive in a blow out win over Bill Self and No. 3 seed Kansas in the round of 32 to punch their first ticket to the Sweet 16 since 2007. USC plays slow and doesn’t take many threes, but the defense is becoming one of the best in the field thanks in large part to super freshman Evan Mobley.
Mobley is projected as the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA draft as a long shot blocker who also has impressive vision and passing ability on offense. His older brother Isaiah Mobley has been on-fire offensively during this tournament run too, and Drew Peterson also provides some much needed shooting. The Trojans now face conference rival Oregon in the Sweet 16.
6. Florida State (No. 4)
The ‘Noles are headed to the Sweet 16 for the third straight time in the NCAA tournament. Is this the year head coach Leonard Hamilton finally makes his first trip to the Final Four? It won’t be easy with a matchup with No. 1 seed Michigan looming in the Sweet 16, but it feels like Florida State has the right combination of size and shooting to compete with anyone left standing in the field.
It seems like there’s a new star for FSU every game, and in their round of 32 win over Colorado, that star was Anthony Polite. The junior wing scored a career-high 22 points as the only starter to finish in double-figures. Balsa Koprivica and Raiquan Gray are an intimidating front line, and guard M.J. Walker can get hot as a perimeter scorer. Michigan better be ready.
5. Alabama (No. 2 seed)
The Tide have used an elite defense and a modern approach to offense to reach the second weekend of the tournament for the first time since 2004. Alabama survived a tough test vs. Rick Pitino’s Iona team in the opening round, and then blew out Maryland in the round of 32. Nate Oats has a case as the best head coach left in the tournament, and he has his team in position to make a run at their first Final Four ever.
Jaden Shackelford and John Petty are both impressive shot-makers on the perimeter leading the offense. Senior Herb Jones was named SEC Player of the Year for his versatile defense and opportunistic scoring ability. There’s also a deep bench that includes sharpshooting freshman Josh Primo and former five-star recruit Jahvon Quinerly. Only Loyola-Chicago is more efficient defensively. Bama might forever be a football school, but they have a hell of a basketball program this year, too.
4. Loyola-Chicago (No. 8 seed)
The Ramblers deserve to be considered one of the favorites to win the whole damn thing at this point. After knocking off Georgia Tech (without star Moses Wright, who failed Covid protocol) in the 8-9 matchup, Loyola-Chicago faced No. 1 seed and in-state rival Illinois. The Illini were a popular pick to win the national championship at the start of the tournament, but Loyola left no doubt they were the superior team in a 71-58 victory.
Loyola went to the Final Four in 2018, and still has two key players (Cameron Krutwig and Lucas Williamson) from that roster leading them this year. The Ramblers currently rank No. 1 in defensive efficiency in the entire country. The matchup with No. 12 seed Oregon State in the Sweet 16 should be a tough test with how well the Beavers are playing lately, but wins like the one Loyola had against Illinois is enough to make a person think this team is destined for another Final Four.
3. Michigan (No. 1 seed)
Michigan lost senior Isaiah Livers to a foot injury just before the tournament, but the Wolverines proved they’re still pretty damn good even without their star forward. After breezing past No. 16 seed Texas Southern in the opener, the Wolverines were tested against LSU but came away with an 86-78 win to punch their ticket to the Sweet 16 and set up a must-see matchup with Florida State.
Chaundee Brown, a former transfer from Wake Forest, admirably filled the void left by Livers against the Tigers, going off for 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the win. Michigan still has plenty of size up front with Hunter Dickinson and Franz Wagner, and its guards Eli Brooks and Mike Smith have each had one great game in the tournament so far. Michigan still has a tough road ahead to get to the Final Four, but the win over LSU proved it can win big games even without one of its best players.
2. Baylor (No. 1 seed)
Baylor has been viewed as the second best team in college basketball all season, and it still feels that way heading into the second weekend of the NCAA tournament. The Bears erased No. 16 Hartford in the first round without much problem, and then handily defeated the Wisconsin Badgers, 76-63, to advance to the Sweet 16.
The Bears have two elite guards in Jared Butler and Davion Mitchell, and another good one in MaCio Teague. They have the most accurate three-point shooting team in the country — making 41.5 percent of their attempts from deep on the year. Adam Flagler, Matthew Mayer, Mark Vital, and their center combo of Flo Thamba and Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua provide great depth. Baylor was supposed to play Gonzaga in the regular season before the game was canceled because of failed Covid protocol. It sure feels like we’re going to get that game for real in the national championship.
1. Gonzaga (No. 1 seed)
28-0. Four wins away from the first perfect season in college basketball since Indiana in 1976. What more do we need to say?
The Zags overwhelmed Norfolk State and Oklahoma in their first two tournament by showing off their wealth of offensive weapons. Jalen Suggs is playing like a future top-three NBA draft pick, Corey Kispert remains as dangerous as any shooter left in the tournament, and Drew Timme might be the most underrated center in the country. Gonzaga has been blowing out teams from the very start of the season, and they haven’t showed any signs of slowing down yet. The Bulldogs are the favorites until someone takes them out.

Tyler Seguin #1 - Meeting the Team
Anon asked: hi! i was wondering if you could write a tyler seguin one about meeting the team for the first time and there's an age difference between tyler and the reader and just something cute? please!
So anon originally I had this whole huge plot point centered around an age difference and instead it’s just kind of used to describe the reader. I’m sorry if you wanted it to play a bigger role. Also in the age difference I wrote it so that Tyler is in fact the younger one just because he is already on the younger side and I felt if the reader was younger it would be possibly weird. Tyler is my best friend’s favorite player and the one I introduced her to, to try and motivate her to watch hockey but alas it did not work. She sends me pictures of him constantly though and asks how “her boy” is doing so maybe it did work? Anyway, I hope you enjoy this!
You and Tyler had been officially dating for six months after almost three months of not so serious dating. After the lack of communication and frustration you sat him down and had the “are we or aren’t we” conversation and Tyler very quickly confirmed that you two were in fact a couple. You didn’t blame him for that brief period of confusion, he was only twenty-five after all. You on the other hand were long past the age of casual dating and were hoping to settle down and start a family.
The Stars were hosting an off season family skate and Tyler had formally invited you, wanting you to finally meet his teammates. You were nervous because you had yet to meet any of them, even the ones Tyler was particularly close with. You didn’t know what Tyler had told them about you so you really didn’t know what to expect.
Tyler drove the two of you to the stadium and parked underneath the structure. The lot was nearly full which caused your nerves to kick into overdrive. He must have sensed that something was wrong because he grabbed your hand.
“Hey what’s up?”
“Nothing.”
He gave you a look, “I know you better than that, give me some credit.”
“I’m okay, I promise.”
“Is this about the team? I know I bitch about them a lot but they’re great guys.”
“Yes. No. I mean…”
“Well which is it? Yes, or no?” Tyler teased.
“Both?”
“Okay well what are you nervous about?”
“I don’t know these guys.”
“Yes, but I do.”
“It feels almost like I’m imposing.”
“Are you shitting me right now? It’s a family skate babe, as in their families will be there too.”
“That adds even more pressure,” you put your head in your hands, “what if their families hate me?”
“Why would they?”
“I don’t know.”
“Look if this is too much you can take the car and go back to my place. I can catch a ride home.”
“No. I can do this,” you climbed out of the car.
“You don’t have to if you don’t want to.”
“But you want me to.”
“I want my team to meet the person who I care about the most.”
“I thought your mom already met the team?” you joked.
“Oh a wise-guy huh? I guess that means you’re okay to go inside?”
You hadn’t been paying attention in the midst of the banter and noticed that Tyler was gesturing to the stadium entrance that was right in front of you.
“How did we get here?”
“You were too distracted by my charm and good looks.”
“I don’t think that was it.”
Tyler shrugged and pushed the door open. The hallway was dimly lit and he pulled you through a series of twists and turns until you could hear the sound of people on the other side of a door.
“Last chance to back out.”
You ignored him and shoved him through the door. The shock of cold never failed to get to you and you zipped your hoodie up to your chin; well Tyler’s hoodie. The majority of the team was already there and skating lazily around the rink. Some of the older kids had set up what looked like a scrimmage and had convinced some of the younger players to join them. Tyler passed you the bag that held your skates when you approached the bench and you quickly slipped them on. He had somehow procured a stick from somewhere and was tossing it between his hands.
“Yo Seggy! You finally made it man. We thought you were a no show.”
You looked up from tying your laces to see Jason Spezza skating over. He gave no indication of noticing you and slapped Tyler on the back; you stood up and made your presence known. Jason was clearly shocked to see you appear out of nowhere, if his facial expressions were anything to go by.
“Spezz don’t be weird,” Tyler elbowed him.
Jason collected himself, “sorry, where are my manners?” he stuck his hand out, “Jason Spezza, nice to meet you.”
You shook his hand, “likewise.”
“So you’re with Tyler?” there was something in his voice that edged towards disbelief.
“That I am.”
“Okay I need to get the guys over here. Tyler never brings anyone to meet us.”
Jason skated off to round up the others. In almost an instant you and Tyler were surrounded by hockey players though none of them were saying anything.
Eventually Jamie Benn spoke up, “so you’re with Tyler?”
“Hey!” Tyler protested, “why is that the first thing you guys ask?”
“Because you’re basically a child,” someone, you think it was Ben Bishop said.
You couldn’t help the laugh you let out and refused to meet Tyler’s eyes when he shot you a betrayed look. That seemed to open the floodgate of questions and you tried to the best of your ability to answer them. The other significant others of the team were milling around the outskirts of the circle and based on the understanding looks they sent you, you knew they had gone through the same thing.
“What do you do?” someone asked.
“I am the Senior Director of Legal Affairs for the Dallas Cowboys.”
“Wow so Tyler, you don’t even have the cool job in this relationship.”
“I think hockey is pretty cool,” you responded.
“How did you two meet?” Jamie asked.
“Yeah! Let’s hear this,” Jason piped up.
You looked at Tyler, “do you want to take this one?”
“Alright. It was at a bar.”
“Oh how romantic.”
“Shut up Chubbs,” Tyler gave Jamie a look, “it was bar trivia night.”
“Since when do you go to trivia?”
“Will you guys shut up and let me tell the story?”
The group went silent save for the snickers of the significant others.
“Okay where was I? Bar trivia. I was with some friends, and yes before any of you ask I have friends outside of the team. We felt confident going in because the theme was literally just sports. Little did we know that we would get our asses handed to us. The questions started off fairly easy, just things like who won what award in what year. Stuff like that; then the hard questions came in. The first one was something weird like what celebrity did some analyst room with in college?”
“The specific question was ‘Back in the day, ESPN college football analyst Lee Corso actually played college football. In the mid-50s he attended Florida State and roomed with another notable ‘Noles player who would go on to be a famous actor. Name the roommate’,” the words were out of your mouth before you could stop them and everyone turned to look at you.
“Yeah,” Tyler said smiling, “that was the question.”
“What is the answer?” Jamie asked Tyler.
Tyler turned to you, “yeah, what is the answer?”
You ignored the flush of your cheeks, “Corso roomed with Burton Leon Reynolds Jr. or Burt Reynolds if you will.”
“Shit man, you should have introduced us sooner.”
“What do you even bring to this relationship Seggy?”
“Guys cut him some slack,” Jason said. The team shut their mouths in embarrassment before Spezza continued, “someone has to be the younger, dumber, lamer half.”
Tyler rolled his eyes but didn’t argue.
He turned to you, “maybe I shouldn’t have brought you here. They like you better than me.”
“I’ll admit; they aren’t as scary as I initially thought.”
After more pestering the team finally dispersed and left you and Tyler room to get out onto the ice. He helped introduce you to some of the other significant others and you knew you’d be leaving the arena with some more numbers in your phone. Patrick Sharp and his wife invited you over for dinner one evening and you easily accepted. Despite the rocky start you found yourself having a good time. You were watching Tyler push a kid along with his stick when he looked up and caught your eye; he skated over and sprayed you with ice.
“What are you doing over here?” he asked.
“Just watching the kids.”
“That will be us eventually,” he gestured to where Kari Lehtonen was spinning around one of the Sharp kids.
“Tyler isn’t it a little early to be thinking about kids?”
“I mean I know you want them and I’m not planning on letting you go so; you do the math.”
You leaned over to kiss him and were interrupted mere seconds later by the youngest Sharp skating into your legs.
“Sorry,” Kari said in a voice that meant he wasn’t the least bit apologetic.
Tyler flipped him off in response and looked back at you, “forget what I said. We already have children here.”

Milit the Frog
Jamie Nole
from the website: When my partner and I were expecting our first child together we decided to go back to our roots. The child’s paternal family traditionally gives the name. The name Milit, which means steelhead in Nisga’a, was chosen as it tied to his great-grandparent who loved to fish. We are a matriarchal nation, so our children follow the mother’s clan. I am a frog, my children are frogs. This is Milit The Frog, the design I created while pregnant and sketched when I did my third year of college. We welcomed baby Milit into the world 2 weeks after I finished third year.

This is when school basketball’s final six unbeaten groups might lose their first recreation
Parity will not be synonymous with school basketball, however early returns are exhibiting an uncommon bending of occasions simply over a month into the season. Amazingly, there are solely six undefeated groups left. Faculty basketball can typically rely on catching Christmas with that many nonetheless standing sans a scar.
Not this season, although. After Mississippi State’s predictable 65-50 highway loss Tuesday night time to Cincinnati, only a half-dozen groups stay with a bagel within the L column — and the quantity might dwindle much more earlier than the weekend arrives. Nearly everybody has been tripped up, although. It might make for lots of enjoyable however difficult parsing of crew résumés down the highway.
The right way to account for this? It is laborious to, actually. There isn’t any one motive. Be it highway video games, neutral-site tournaments, accidents, suspensions or in any other case, 345 groups have taken on a loss and that has led to loads of inconsistency inside the rankings and seen an influence construction change amongst high conferences. The SEC is ranked larger than the Huge Ten. The Pac-12 is barely forward of the AAC at KenPom.
It is a flip from latest seasons, when school basketball has been boosted in three of the previous 4 years by having a crew get deep into February, if not March or April, earlier than shedding its first recreation. Bear in mind when these groups flirted with undefeated seasons?
2013-14: Wichita State ran the regular-season desk and earned a No. 1 seed as an unbeaten crew heading into the NCAAs earlier than shedding to Kentucky within the Spherical of 32.
2014-15: Kentucky made it to 38-Zero earlier than falling to Wisconsin within the Ultimate 4.
2016-17: Gonzaga bought all the way in which to its last recreation of the common season earlier than shedding in baffling style on its dwelling flooring to BYU.
It would not appear to be we will get that form of run this season, even when the present No. 1 crew within the nation appears succesful. In reality, Villanova won’t make it to subsequent week and not using a loss.
This is who stays good, with ideas on every crew’s season thus far, when the primary loss ought to arrive and a prognostication on NCAA Match seeding.
Finest two wins: vs. SMU, vs. Nevada (in Los Angeles)
Subsequent three opponents: vs. Texas Southern (Dec. 18); vs. William & Mary (Dec. 22); vs. Oklahoma (Dec. 30)
Seed guess for Choice Sunday: No. Three
Jamie Dixon’s crew has not obtained constant acclaim for enjoying past expectations this season, however that ought to change quickly. The Horned Frogs had been anticipated to be a lock for the highest 4 of the Huge 12. Would possibly they wind up really tussling with Kansas atop the league standings? The Frogs are capturing 61 % from 2-point vary, fourth greatest within the nation. That is as a result of Kenrich Williams, Vladimir Brodziansky, J.D. Miller and Ahmed Hamdy could possibly be the very best entrance line in school basketball. All juniors or seniors. All serving to put TCU on the map nationally. This crew isn’t any fraud. Simply because it hasn’t been a program of be aware in a long time does not imply it deserves skepticism.
TCU will get to 12-Zero, then that dwelling recreation vs. Oklahoma goes to be large. Each groups ought to crack 85. If TCU wins there, the highway recreation in opposition to Baylor on Jan. 2 might be the place it lastly will get tripped up. The Huge 12 total is simply too loaded this season to entertain any crew lasting into mid-January earlier than taking a league loss. It is the very best convention within the nation.
Finest two wins: vs. Tennessee (within the Bahamas), vs. Gonzaga (at Madison Sq. Backyard)
Subsequent three opponents: at Temple (Wednesday); at Hofstra (Dec. 22); at DePaul (Dec. 27 on CBS Sports activities Community)
Seed guess for Choice Sunday: No. 1
The Temple tilt will likely be a Huge 5 matchup on the Owls’ dwelling flooring. Fran Dunphy’s crew might shock you and wind up within the NCAAs. Nova has appeared pretty much as good as anybody this season — however that is going to be a battle. It will be an fascinating subsequent two weeks for Jay Wright. After Temple comes a recreation at Hofstra, the place Wright coached earlier than incomes the VU gig. After that, league play begins on the highway at DePaul. DePaul will not be that good, however each coach needs to open convention play at dwelling.
The Wildcats might get picked off earlier than 2018 arrives, however with how properly they’re balanced they don’t seem to be going to drop out of the highest 10 all season. It is not simply Jalen Brunson as a Participant of the Yr candidate at level guard. Mikal Bridges has discovered his new stage. In reality, Bridges ranks third in KenPom’s POY metric, a surprising improvement. Omari Spellman is a borderline top-10 freshman (albeit a redshirt) in America. Phil Sales space, Eric Paschall and Donte DiVincenzo are all able to placing up 15-plus on the suitable night time. To me, the almost definitely crew to be the final one standing and not using a loss. However at the least three are coming Villlanova’s approach earlier than we get to the Huge East Match.
Finest two wins: vs. Xavier (in Las Vegas), at Kansas
Subsequent three opponents: vs. Vanderbilt (Dec. 17); vs. Longwood (Dec. 19); vs. Pacific (Dec. 22)
Seed guess for Choice Sunday: No. Three
Beating Kansas on Sunday was big for Arizona State’s rating and nationwide fame. Amazingly, ASU is on this listing as a result of it simply earned its second non-league win in opposition to a top-10 crew in 38 years. The one different top-10 win the Solar Devils have had vs. a crew outdoors the Pac-Eight/Pac-10/Pac-12 since 1978-79 got here in 1994 in opposition to Maryland. Arizona State is off to its second 9-Zero begin in class historical past. Its longest profitable streak is 18 video games, which got here again in 1961-62. That season, ASU bought as excessive as No. Three within the Related Press ballot, a faculty report. The Solar Devils at the moment are No. 5, their highest rating since 1981.
The Solar Devils are poised to enter league play undefeated. Vanderbilt is up subsequent and the Commodores are solely Three-6. All three upcoming video games are on ASU’s dwelling flooring. This units up an incredible Dec. 30 recreation at Arizona to open Pac-12 play. It could possibly be the recreation of that weekend. ASU is unlikely to get via the primary quarter of the league schedule earlier than shedding, although. Even when it will get by Arizona, Colorado and Utah on the highway observe. ASU has a top-five offense, however the D is simply common. Somebody’s going to select the Solar Devils off inside the subsequent month. Nonetheless, what a narrative and what a enjoyable crew. Shannon Evans, Tra Holder and Kodi Justice are the very best three-headed senior assault in school hoops proper now.
Finest two wins: at Rutgers, at Florida
Subsequent three opponents: vs. Oklahoma State (Saturday in Dawn, Florida); vs. Charleston Southern (Dec. 18); vs. Southern Miss (Dec. 21)
Seed guess for Choice Sunday: No. 6
That Oklahoma State recreation later this week is trickier than you would possibly assume. Florida State ought to win, however simply regulate it. The Notes blipped the nationwide radar with their 83-66 beatdown at Florida on Dec. four. Aside from that, not lots. Successful at Rutgers is not nothing, nevertheless it is not one thing. FSU ranks 28th in offensive and defensive effectivity at KenPom. It is high 10 in offensive rebound share, which is an enormous plus at this stage, however we’ve to account for the relative lack of measurement FSU has confronted in opposition to most non-conference groups as properly. Cannot deny that this crew is best than was anticipated on the entire, although. It misplaced Jonathan Isaac, Dwayne Bacon and Xavier Rathan-Mayes to the NBA Draft. It got here again with some expertise however nobody who was an alpha. Thus far junior small ahead Terance Mann and sophomore level guard C.J. Walker have flourished.
Absolutely the furthest this crew will go earlier than shedding a recreation is Dec. 30. On that day, the Noles head to Duke.
Finest two wins: at Richmond, Mount St. Mary’s
Subsequent three opponents: vs. Syracuse (Saturday on CBS ); vs. North Texas (Dec. 20); vs. Alabama A&M (Dec. 23)
Seed guess for Choice Sunday: NIT
The Hoyas’ notoriously depressing non-conference schedule, which ranks because the worst (351 out of 351) within the sport, is the rationale this crew will not be ranked in the mean time. Nor ought to it’s. With Patrick Ewing in his first season as a head coach, Georgetown pillowed up the non-con in an effort to construct confidence and crew morale. Thus far, so good. That’s: no mortifying losses to SWAC or MEAC groups. Mississippi State — after shedding to Cincinnati on Tuesday night time and dropping its first recreation of the season — did not obtain the backlash of Georgetown, however let the report mirror that as of Tuesday night time it ranked 346th in non-conference SOS.
The Hoyas are most likely shedding at dwelling Saturday vs. Syracuse, nevertheless it’s a rivalry recreation so maybe not. I do not assume Cuse is an NCAA Match crew this season, so if the Hoyas can win that one then they’re most likely not dealing with the specter of a loss till the Huge East opener on Dec. 27 at dwelling in opposition to Butler. Absolutely the longest I see this streak going is Dec. 30. That is a roadie at Marquette. Georgetown will not be making it to 2018 undefeated.
Finest two wins: at Minnesota, vs. La Salle (in Studying, Pennsylvania)
Subsequent three opponents: at George Washington (Saturday on CBS Sports activities Community); at Hawaii (Dec. 22); vs. Davidson or New Mexico State (Dec. 23 in Hawaii)
Seed guess for Choice Sunday: No. 2
A program that was caught up with the FBI’s investigation — coach Jim Larranaga was subpoenaed however nobody from Miami was connected to the scheme straight — has not let that saga have an effect on its on-court play. The Hurricanes’ win at Minnesota appeared nice on the time, and can nonetheless carry worth, however Minnesota hasn’t been proper since that 86-81 loss. Miami was my preseason decide to win the ACC. I stand by it. This crew is loaded with athletes who’ve the dimensions to make each night time a nightmare for ACC foes. Larranaga’s teaching a top-five protection. The offense will solely get higher. One of the best signal for The U is that Bruce Brown has been merely good thus far. He is their greatest total participant, but sophomore energy ahead Dewan Huell and freshman capturing guard Lonnie Walker have been extra environment friendly. When all of the items click on, Miami could make a Ultimate 4 run.
The schedule will get fascinating. George Washington will not be good this season, however no highway recreation in opposition to a crew from a top-10 convention is automated. Then Miami has to fly to Hawaii for the Diamond Head Traditional. It performs Hawaii first, then will face both Davidson or New Mexico State. The U is best than each of these groups, after all. From there, a possible championship recreation look in that bracket in opposition to Princeton (a attainable rematch), Center Tennessee, Akron or Southern California. Then it returns to the continental United States to play at Pitt, then at Georgia Tech. That will likely be 5 straight video games away from dwelling. Within the large image, it is lots to ask. I believe Miami will get picked off in a kind of 5.

The 10 coolest bowl matchups of college football’s 2017-2018 bowl season
Other than the Playoff, of course.
Bowls are divisive. There are too many! They are an outdated concept! They are a celebration of mediocrity! We should expand the College Football Playoff and get rid of them!
To some degree, all of the exclamations above are true. But it doesn’t matter. Bowls are amazing. They are expensive participation medals, sure, but they are true sports socialism in the best possible way. They are also bonus football. Why would you want less bonus football?
To get primed for the 2017-18 bowl season, let’s look at the 10 coolest matchups of bowl season.
10. The Basketball Score Bowl
Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports
USF’s Quinton Flowers
Birmingham Bowl: USF vs. Texas Tech (December 27)
Yes, some people actually like defense. Yes, if every game was 59-52, it would probably get boring. But having the occasional 100-point, 1,000-yard track meet can be delightful.
While neither USF nor Texas Tech completely fit their own stereotypes — USF’s defense didn’t allow more than 31 points to anyone not named UCF, and Texas Tech was a little worse than normal on offense and a little better than normal on defense — let’s not pretend we’d be surprised if this game went bonkers. Fingers crossed.
9. The Brett Favre Bowl
Southern Miss’ Brett Favre
Independence Bowl: Florida State vs. Southern Miss (December 27)
In the eight seasons between 1987 and 1994, Florida State suffered only 11 losses: six to Miami, one each to Florida, Notre Dame, Clemson, and Auburn ... and one to Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles opened the 1989 season with a victory over the No. 6 Noles. The 30-26 win was capped by a touchdown pass thrown by future NFL gunslinger Brett Favre with under 30 seconds left.
youtube
This year’s battle in Shreveport won’t carry quite the same level of gravitas. Florida State isn’t Florida State, and Southern Miss doesn’t have a Favre. But anything that allows us to reminisce is fun.
8. The DeLoss Dodds Bowl
Missouri vs. Texas, 2011
Texas Bowl: Missouri vs. Texas (December 27)
Early-November 2011: Missouri announces it is following Texas A&M in escaping the Big 12 for the SEC.
Mid-November 2011: Missouri and Texas play for the last time.
February 2013: Now-former Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds accidentally reveals he’s still a little miffed about it by bringing up Missouri without prompt.
"We're going to have good years again," Dodds promised. "Our bad years are not that bad. Take a school like Missouri. Our bad years are better than their good years."
Fans of both schools have already been reminded of that quote a few times, and the bowl pairing isn’t even 24 hours old yet.
7. The Turnaround Bowl
Arizona’s Khalil Tate
Foster Farms Bowl: Arizona vs. Purdue (December 27)
Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm is one of the best tacticians in college sports and engineered a stunning turnaround, both in the macro (the Boilermakers improved from 3-9 to 6-6) and micro (they lost four of five, then rallied to get to six wins) senses.
Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez was on a very hot seat after falling from 10 wins in 2014 to three in 2016 and starting this season 2-2. But then he handed his fate to sophomore quarterback Khalil Tate, who proceeded to rush for nearly 1,500 yards, throw for almost 1,300 more, and engineer a 5-1 stretch that saved Rodriguez’s job and made the Wildcats one of the most exciting teams in the country.
You’re interested in fun tactics, big plays, and two teams that are excited to be playing, right? Thought so.
6. The Zombie Bowl
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports
Bahamas Bowl: UAB vs. Ohio (December 22)
UAB’s football program was killed for spectacularly stupid reasons, then brought back to life with a completely rebuilt roster. Somehow the school kept head coach Bill Clark, however, and he has pulled off a feat of a lifetime: in the Blazers’ first year back as a zombie program, they were not only competitive — they won eight games and played genuinely good defense.
Their reward: a trip to the Bahamas to face an Ohio that was one of the best in the mid-major universe in October but stumbled down the stretch.
5. The Redemption Bowl
Orange Bowl: No. 6 Wisconsin vs. No. 10 Miami (December 30)
Wisconsin started 12-0 but came one score short of a Playoff bid. If the Badgers can rebound with a win in South Florida, they’ll likely finish in the top five for the first time since 1999.
Miami started 10-0 but collapsed over the final two weeks, first getting upset by Pitt over Thanksgiving weekend, then getting humiliated by Clemson in the ACC title game. Still, a win over Wisconsin would prompt their first top-10 finish since 2003.
Both teams are dealing with disappointment; only one will find redemption.
4. The Statement Bowl
Peach Bowl: No. 7 Auburn vs. No. 12 UCF (January 1)
It is one of the cruelest things about college sports: half of FBS begins the year hoping for a “told you so” opportunity, not actually a shot at the national title. UCF has been awesome in 2017 but couldn’t even crack the top 10 of the CFP rankings because of a schedule its players and coaches had no control over.
Regardless, the Knights certainly still have a chance to prove themselves. Auburn’s maybe the least favorable matchup of any major bowl team they could have been pitted against — the Tigers have a dynamite defensive front (like Washington) and an efficiency offense that could run them ragged (perhaps unlike Washington). Still, UCF can send a message for all of the Group of Five with an excellent showing.
3. The S&P+ Bowl
Fiesta Bowl: No. 9 Penn State vs. No. 11 Washington (December 30)
If S&P+ were used to determine an eight-team Playoff (which I don’t necessarily recommend), one of the quarterfinal matchups would have been No. 4 Washington vs. No. 5 Penn State.
The Huskies flashed as much upside as anyone in the country but laid a couple of eggs offensively. The Nittany Lions lost two games to top-20 teams, on the road, by a combined four points. These are tremendous football teams with all sorts of star power — Penn State’s Saquon Barkley and Trace McSorley, Washington’s Vita Vea and Jake Browning — and one will finish with 11 wins.
2. The Finally Bowl
Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports
Arizona Bowl: New Mexico State vs. Utah State (December 29)
If you think bowl games are overrated, if you would simply prefer some giant, 24-team playoff that ends bowls or whatever, then I’m not sure we can be friends.
One of my favorite subplots of the 2017 season — as any Podcast Ain’t Played Nobody listener knows — was tracking New Mexico State’s quest for its first bowl since 1960. The Aggies were competitive in early losses to Arizona State and Troy, and they rallied to win three of their final four games to finish 6-6. And their fans rushed the field like they had won the national title.

Winning football games is really hard. Hell, fielding a football team is hard considering the number of moving pieces and the volume of people required. New Mexico State has been fielding a team for decades and will finally get a postseason reward for it. Endless kudos to head coach Doug Martin and everyone involved. Watch this game.

Cotton Bowl: No. 8 USC vs. No. 5 Ohio State (December 29)
USC and Ohio State have played in the Rose Bowl seven times and claim 19 national titles between them. This is the definition of a nostalgia bowl. It is a celebration of two blue blood programs, a combination of uniforms* that should make everyone happy.
It should also be a hell of a game. S&P+ likes the Buckeyes quite a bit more than the Trojans, but USC looked mostly excellent after that mid-October dud against Notre Dame. And the quality of the matchup should mean neither team suffers too much of a “shoulda made the Playoff” hangover heading into kickoff.
* I echo ESPN’s Rece Davis, by the way: let’s make sure that the uniforms are the uniforms, not some sort of gaudy, gross alternate jerseys. Looking at you, Buckeyes. Scarlet and gray, please.

Entry Lists Released for U.S. Short Track Nationals at Bristol
The expected entry lists for Bristol Motor Speedway’s U.S. Short Track Nationals have been released.  To no one’s surprise the lists are massive, with over 500 drivers ready to attack the historic facility May 19-21.
The divisions involved are Super Late Models (co-sanctioned by CRA, CARS, and the Southern Super Series), Pro Late Models (sanctioned by CRA), Late Model Stocks (sanctioned by CARS), Modifieds (sanctioned by the National Short Track Racing Alliance), Street Stocks (sanctioned by CRA), and Sport Compacts (sanctioned by Vores Cup)
Just a few weeks ago Bristol requested the participating sanctioning bodies limit each division to a certain number of entrants.  The maximum number set by the Speedway are: 80 Super Late Models, 80 Pro/Crate Late Models, 60 Late Model Stocks, 80 Modifieds, 110 Street Stocks, and 110 Compacts.  The numbers have been exceeded in all but two divisions.
Bristol is now asking those who may not compete to contact their corresponding sanctioning bodies.

from the website: Social media, a place were we connect with friends and family and get updates on friends and family. We posts life updates, pictures, videos, conspiracy theories, and news. It’s a continuous amount of scrolling, and a lot of release of dopamine after getting those ♥︎likes♥︎. Social media, it’s a slippery slope.

Awareness and Acceptance
Jamie Nole
from the website: I was inspired to create this design because I have three little ones who are diagnosed with ASD. My four-year-old and my two year old twins showing me that autism is a spectrum; I adore their little traits similar to each other or unique - nonverbal, sensory seeking, stimming, lack of eye contact, lining up things, hyperlexic, scripting, hand leading, and more.
The shapes/figures you see in the brain design represent how the autism brain is different from neurotypical brains. The silhouette is of my 4year old, who loves to paint or color rainbows. Of course, I had to use a spectrum of colours to represent that autism is a Spectrum.
