Can A Thumb-Sized Nuclear ☢️ Battery 🔋 Last 50 Years?

A Chinese Company Says it is on the Verge of Mass Producing a 15mm x 15mm x 5mm 3-volt, 100 Microwatt Nuclear Battery – Which Lasts For Up To 50 Years – For Civilian Use. Source: Betavolt.

The race to build a nuclear battery is heating up, with a Chinese startup pitching a coin-sized device it says can keep producing a charge for 50 years.

Beijing-based Betavolt is joining a field that includes Australia’s PhosEnergy, which was given $2.3 million in 2022 to explore producing ultra-long-life batteries for the Department of Defence.

Betavolt is aiming for a much larger market with smaller devices powering mobile phones, laptops and drones.

“If policies permit, atomic energy batteries can allow a mobile phone to never be charged, and drones that can only fly for 15 minutes can fly continuously,” Betavolt says in a statement.

Public policy may be a problem. Existing coin-sized lithium-ion batteries can cause life-threatening injuries if swallowed as their charge can burn through a child’s oesophagus within a few hours.

Betavolt says the energy density of its tiny unit is 10 times that of similar-sized lithium batteries. But a small nuclear battery could pose an additional risk: beta radiation.

The proposed battery harnesses beta radiation released from a radioactive nickel isotope and converts this into electricity. Beta particles are not the most dangerous form of radiation. It is a high-speed, high-energy, but low-mass electron.

It cannot travel as far as an X-ray or carry as much energy as an alpha particle. And while it has sufficient impact to pierce several millimetres of skin, small amounts of shielding can provide adequate protection. Like a lithium-ion battery, the most significant health risk will likely be if ingested.

China’s Betavolt believes the potential for a long-life battery for drones, robotics and autonomous systems far outweighs any risk, adding its development puts China “way ahead” of European and American scientific research institutions and enterprises.

It says production has entered the pilot stage, with mass production expected in 2025.

Meanwhile, PhosEnergy is working with the University of Adelaide to exploit the relative safety of beta radiation isotopes as power packs for space-based satellites and rovers.

“In recent proof of concept experiments, GenX’s unique semiconductor-metal electrode configuration has been shown to effectively harvest power from the semiconductor layer when excited,” the company says.

“A demonstration unit is currently under construction with a prototype unit planned to follow, which will be tested in a space equivalent environment to allow commercial demonstration.”

rou kent wasn’t one to believe in fate. but standing on the sidelines, watching his richmond team warm up, he couldn’t help but think something had changed in the cosmos.

it all started a month ago when ted had convinced the club to host a charity match against the u.s. women’s national team. his excitement was palpable; he wouldn’t stop talking about the talent, the speed, and the sheer joy of the game these women brought.

the day of the match arrived, and the richmond team was ready to show their skills. as the players took to the field, roy’s eyes caught a wide smile and a confident stride. there you were, the american soccer sensation, y/n l/n. roy had heard the name in passing but hadn’t paid much attention until now.

“oi, kent!” jamie tartt’s voice snapped roy back to reality. “you okay, mate? you’re starin’.”

roy grunted, brushing off jamie’s remark. “just keep your head in the game, tartt.”

the match was exhilarating. you were a force to be reckoned with, weaving through defenders and scoring with ease. richmond fought hard, but the u.s. team’s chemistry was undeniable. ted was practically glowing with admiration from the sidelines, unable to contain his joy at seeing such high-caliber play.

after the game, there was a small reception for both teams. roy lingered near the edge of the crowd, nursing a drink and watching as his teammates mingled with the americans. ted was in his element, chatting animatedly with you about strategy and techniques.

a few days later, disaster struck during a training session. roy was showing some of the younger players a defensive move when he felt a sharp pain in his knee. he went down hard, cursing under his breath. the pain was intense, and he knew immediately it was bad.

the medical team rushed to his side, but it was you who was there first, having just arrived to surprise him. she knelt beside him, your face etched with concern.

“roy, are you okay?” you asked, voice steady despite the worry in your eyes.

“bloody knee,” he grumbled, wincing as the medics examined him.

you stayed by his side, holding his hand as they helped him off the field. ted was there too, his face a mix of worry and admiration for the way you were supporting roy.

later, in the treatment room, roy lay on the table, his knee wrapped and elevated. you sat beside him, hand never leaving his.

“you’re going to be okay,” you said softly, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead.

roy looked at her, feeling a swell of emotion. “thanks”

“you don’t have to thank me,” she replied. “i’m here for you, roy. no matter what.”

as the weeks passed, you became a constant presence in Roy’s life. you were there for his rehab sessions, cheering him on and keeping his spirits high. your unwavering support and love gave him the strength to push through the pain and frustration.

the guys were shocked at first, unable to believe that the gruff, tough-as-nails roy kent was dating the american soccer star. but as they saw the change in him - the way he smiled more, the way he seemed lighter - they couldn’t help but be happy for him.

ted, of course, was over the moon. “i always knew you had a soft spot, roy,” he said one day, clapping him on the back. “and she’s just the person to bring it out.”

roy rolled his eyes but couldn’t suppress the smile tugging at his lips. “yeah, yeah. just don’t go writing any sonnets about it, lasso.”

ted laughed. “wouldn’t dream of it.”

as the season progressed, roy’s knee healed, and he returned to the field stronger than ever. and through it all, you were there, a beacon of light in his life. you continued to navigate their demanding careers, but they always found time for each other, their bond growing deeper with each passing day.

roy kent had never believed in fate, but looking at you, he couldn’t help but think that maybe, just maybe, everything had fallen into place exactly as it was meant to.

The original meaning of the term "Final Girl," from 1987's "Her Body, Himself: Gender in the Slasher Film" by Carol J. Clover, was "a woman who is a sole survivor of a group who are chased by the villain, and who gets the final confrontation with said villain [whether she wins or not is not considered] because of some implied moral superiority." As an example, Jamie Lee Curtis's character of Laurie Strode in 1978's Halloween is the sole survivor of the teenagers that Michael Myers hunts, and gets the climactic scene with him, though she's not the one who defeats him. Her character is the only one of her friend group who does not (onscreen at least) partake in drugs, alcohol or sexual activity.

The term "final girl" has expanded over the years, often losing the moral superiority clause (see: Sidney Prescott in Scream, Maxine in X) or having other survivor(s) so long as the girl gets the final confrontation (the sisters in the recent Scream movies, Dana Polk in Cabin in the Woods). The most common deviation is losing the moral superiority clause, with the characters either being just as moral as their group or even being morally in the wrong but still surviving as a subversion or deconstruction of the trope. A common addition is a prior connection to the villain, though this is not necessary.

With all that being said,

As always, Girl is a gender-neutral term when it comes to having fun. I decided not to count Knuckles because we don't know his full backstory in-game and the word-of-god answer is that his species died of disease, and also because he'd be the funny answer everyone would pick immediately so that doesn't count guys.

Important Notes to Consider:

Tikal:

Last Survivor: Somewhat. Other echidnas seem to have survived Chaos's attack, but Tikal was the last character alive shown onscreen, and the only other named characters in her time period did not survive.

Final Confrontation: Applies. She is the one to seal Chaos into the Master Emerald.

Moral Superiority: Applies. She's the only one in her tribe willing to stand up to her warmongering dad.

Shadow:

Last Survivor: Applies. While some people seem to have escaped the ARK massacre (like the Commander), all other named characters are either killed or captured and killed afterwards.

Final Confrontation: Debatable. There isn't actually a singular monster attacking the ARK, instead it's the entire military. Shadow however does get a confrontation with the Biolizard and later with Black Doom. Do they count for this though? You decide.

Moral Superiority: Not Applicable. Shadow isn't inherently morally above or below the other people on the ARK who died.

Cosmo:

Last Survivor: Mostly Applies. She is the last survivor specifically of her species. Everyone else in the Sonic Crew survives to the final confrontation, but her species is toast.

Final Confrontation: Applies. Cosmo is the last to interact with Dark Oak in the initial genocide, and the one to eventually defeat him (along with Tails, but really it was Cosmo's sacrifice that actually killed him).

Moral Superiority: Not Applicable. The rest of her species are portrayed as innocent and undeserving of their fate, and her survival was purely due to her fear making her accept a deal with Dark Oak and the implication that he's her father.

Silver:

Last Survivor: Mostly Applies. He and Blaze are the only seen survivors of Iblis's assault. Blaze absorbs Iblis and dips, but Silver does have a fight with Solaris in the final ending.

Final Confrontation: Somewhat. Blaze and Silver both boss fight Iblis, and Blaze gets the final confrontation and defeat. However, Silver partakes in the defeat of Solaris, who technically is Iblis.

Moral Superiority: Not Applicable. Silver isn't given moral superiority towards anyone who dies.

Sonic Forces Avatar:

Last Survivor: Somewhat. Avatar is the last survivor of their village due to them fleeing from Infinite. They join up with a group following this and assist Sonic in defeating Infinite.

Final Confrontation: Somewhat. Sonic is also there.

Moral Superiority: Debatable. Like Cosmo, the other civilians are portrayed as innocent and Avatar only escapes due to their perceived cowardice. They are shown to be Extra Special Besties with Sonic which helps them defeat Infinite through the power of Love, so that may count?

Whisper:

Last Survivor: Mostly Applies. Whisper is the last Diamond Cutter after Mimic kills her entire squad and betrays them. She goes solo until eventually confronting Mimic and then helping found a reformed Diamond Cutters.

Final Confrontation: Debatable. Mimic is still an active threat in the comics, but Whisper did get a climactic confrontation with him in Tangle & Whisper.

Moral Superiority: Not Applicable. Whisper only survived because Claire requested she stay behind due to her intuition.

Sonic in '06 specifically:

Last Survivor: Mostly Applies. Sonic is the only character who remembers that the '06 timeline occurred, making him the technical only survivor of its events. Ignore the fact he died at one point, he got better.

Final Confrontation: Mostly Applies. Sonic leads the attack against Solaris in the Final Boss fight, but Elise is the one to blow out the candle and reset the timeline.

Moral Superiority: Debatable. All the other characters are "heroes" but Sonic is the Biggest Best Hero Of Them All That The Chaos Emeralds Love Soooo Much, and he also is the one to selflessly insist on the timeline reset so that the whole Solaris Destruction Thing never happens.

Stardew Valley spouses + what I think they'd name their children.

Shane - I actually personally headcanon that after marriage, Shane would focus on raising his goddaughter Jas and putting his all into his sobriety before he thinks about having other kids. But based on the fact that his favourite chicken is called Charlie, I think he'd like gender neutral names. Maybe something along the lines of Jessie / Jesse, Casey, or Cameron.

Maru - Something calling back to science, for sure. Ada for a girl (after Ada Lovelace) and Isaac for a boy (joint ode to Isaac Newton and Isaac Asimov.) Maybe names after constellations? Like Cass / Cassie (Cassiopeia), Andromeda, or Carina.

Sebastian - Obviously something referencing a gothic novel. Dorian (after Portrait of Dorian Gray) for a boy, and Mina (after the female protagonist of Dracula) for a girl. The middle name would possibly be a reference to an obsure Solarian Chronicles character, unless his spouse reigned him in.

Abigail - Abby would like older names, the kind of thing you'd see in a Victorian novel. Violet or Beatrice for a girl, Theodore or Henry for a boy. She would be dismayed when she realizes that those names are fashionable again, she definitely sees herself as a true original lol.

Sam - There's a piece of Kent dialogue at the flower dance where he says if he and Jodi had a girl they might name her after a flower. Maybe Sam would think along the same lines as his dad. Will (after sweet williams) or Cosmo for a boy, or Rosie or Heather for a girl.

Emily - Obviously she would love hippie-dippy names, gemstones and nature inspired. I actually have children with Emily in one save and they are called Meadow and Fen. I think she'd like names that called back to her personal history with the farmer. If they went on a particularly memorable date to the seaside for example, then their child would be called Marina or Morgan or even just Ocean. Gemstone names like Jasper and Ruby would also be a great choice.

Elliott - Somewhat old fashioned names with literary allusions. Agatha and Charles, after Agatha Christie and Charles Dickens. Maybe a reference to a famous piano player, like Frederic or Claude (Chopin & Debussy) for boys, or Martha or Myra (Argerich & Hess) for girls.

Penny - First of all, I know you can only have 2 children with a spouse in game, but I think Penny would like to foster various kids alongside having children of her own. Her own childhood was tumultuous, she would love to have a stable home offering respite to kids who need it. Penny is the only character in the game who doesn't hate poppies, maybe she'd name a daughter Poppy, which would also match the theme of her + her mother having P names. I think her taste in names would be fairly conventional. Anna, Jamie, David, Lizzie, Ben... You get the idea. Short, simple, but cute.

Harvey - My first thought is Amelia after Amelia Airheart but I don't know if that would be too grim considering she disappeared and probably died horribly. Maybe Harvey could look past that and just focus on the aviation history lol. For a boy, Sully, after Sully Sullenberger. Perhaps he'd also name a daughter after Marie Skłodowska-Curie, with the bonus points of it sounding close enough to Maru to be an ode to her as well. I could also see him liking the names Amy, Oscar, Oliver, and Florence. Also, I know in the game you have one boy and one girl, but I honestly headcanon him as being a very enthusiastic girldad tbh.

Alex - Whatever the Stardew Valley equivalent of an 'All American' name is. Carter, Zack, or Todd for boys & Maddison, Nicole, or Katie for girls. Maybe named for famous gridball players or something. I also think the middle names would probably be an ode to his grandparents, so George & Evelyn (or Georgia and Everett, if you feel like remixing it).

Haley - Summer, Lani, or Alyssa for a girl, and Kai, Evan or Chris for a boy. I have no real reason for this, I'm going on pure vibes. Haley doesn't strike me as a particularly sentimental person, I think her baby name choices would just be based on what she thought sounded pretty. Also, for whatever reason I only headcanon her having only one child.

Leah - Nature inspired names are the obvious choice. Fern, Hazel, or Willow for girls, and Cliff, Ash, or Rowan for boys. I think she might also like longer, more traditional names, like Catherine or Andrew.

I love making unnecessary tasks for myself and @need-him-pregnant-poll currently has me in a chokehold so I put together a baby list! Based on an idea mentioned that each poll is a new pregnancy, I was curious about the amount of babies everyone has now, and I thought other people might be interested as well!

The single digits are for the characters that are still currently in the tournament and their final baby numbers aren’t official yet. The rest are in a range based on whether the idea is that the character gets pregnant every time they’re in a poll or if they get pregnant each time they win a poll(and I wanted the characters who lost in the first round to still have a chance at pregnancy lol) so characters with 3-4 babies were in four separate polls but only won three etc etc

Roy gulped as he watched you walk down the hall at the Dog Track. From your first day at Richmond, it was obvious that he wasn’t the only person who couldn’t keep his eyes off of you. But, after that night at Ola’s and drinks at his favorite pub, he definitely found himself noticing more often. Especially when the people gawking at you were young, handsome footballers who were half his age and still in the prime of their careers.

Sure, you smiled at them and joked with them, you accepted their invitations to party after matches, sometimes you even accepted their sweaty hugs, but they weren’t who you were sneaking into the boot room and empty offices to kiss. And they weren’t who you were winking at now as you passed each other in the hall.

It dawned on Roy that he hadn’t taken you on a proper date yet. Yeah, the two of you had texted pretty much nonstop since that night when you both admitted to your feelings, and you’d grabbed drinks after work a few times now, outings that usually ended up with heavy kissing and petting in his car, and one time you’d even stopped by his place with some paperwork and ended up staying for hours, sitting in his kitchen and laughing over a shared bottle of wine.

But none of that satisfied him. Roy was more old-fashioned than that. Hookups and one-night stands were old hat to him, but this situationship- a vocabulary word Keeley had taught him when she was reading Cosmo during lunch one day- was not something he was used to. He liked knowing where he stood with a woman, whether that was as a boyfriend or just as someone to buy their drinks before paying him back in the bedroom. With you, he had no fucking idea what was going on other than the fact that you sent him TikToks that actually made him laugh and that you seemed to enjoy pulling him into the boot room when no one was watching.

Deciding that he’d had enough of whatever this was, he reached out and grabbed your wrist, prompting raised eyebrows from you.

“Need something, Coach?” The smile that played on your unfairly kissable lips made Roy’s heart twitch.

He cleared his throat, letting his hand fall back to his side, immediately missing the feeling of your skin. “I, er, was wondering what you’re doing Friday night.” He shifted his weight onto his good leg. “I’d like to take you out.” He stopped, glancing sideways, his eyes hitting a poster of one of those young, handsome Greyhounds who’d probably do a much better job of this. “On a date,” he clarified.

How did your smile manage to light up even brighter?

“Was wondering when you’d ask,” you teased, giving him a playful shove.

Relief flooded his chest, enough for him to tease you back. “You could’ve fucking asked, you know,” he countered with a smirk. “It’s the twenty-first century. Feminism and whatnot.”

Down the hall, a voice called your name, summoning you into some meeting. “Be right there!” you called over your shoulder. You turned back to Roy, mischief sparkling in your eyes. “I know. But I wanted you to ask. I’m kind of an old-fashioned girl that way.” Not caring that a group of players was walking by, you stood on tiptoe and pressed a kiss to his scruffy cheek before turning around. “See you later, Coach.”

Roy felt like a statue as he watched you saunter away, wondering if the jaunty spring in your step was for his benefit. He was pretty sure he had his answer when you paused at the doorway and glanced back at him, offering him another one of those winks. He relished the look of astonishment on the young players’ faces as he turned on his heel and walked back towards his own office.

Roy Kent definitely still had it.

The DC Animated Universe - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles

Elseworlds Addendum - Blue Beetle / Jaimie Reyes 

Jaime Reyes was the third hero to operate under the mantle of The Blue Beetle.  The mystical scarab that had empowered the original Blue Beetle (Dan Garret) was being kept safe in the Rock of Eternity.  During The Day of Vengeance event, however, the Rock of Eternity was destroyed and the Scarab was sent hurdling through the inter-dimensional cosmos, ultimately landing in the desert outside of El Paso Texas.  There it was happened upon by teenager Jaime Reyes.  The scarab appeared to come to life and bonded with Jaimie, seamlessly attaching itself to the base of his spine.  

The scarab created an armor around young Jaime, bestowing him a host of formidable super powers. Although it was initially difficult to control these various powers, Jamie ultimately gained greater master and used his newfound abilities to become a superhero.

While Blue Beetle did not appear in the original DCAU, the Jamie Reyes version of the hero did appear in a number of subsequent animated series, including Batman the Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, Justice League Action and  DC Super Hero Girls. Herein the character was voiced by actors Will Friedle, Eric Lopez, Jake T. Austin and Max Mittelman respectively.

The third Blue Beetle first appeared in the pages of Infinite Crisis #3 (2006).

Paraview

Genre: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Slice-of-Life Continutiy: It's own continuity, but is based off the Pre-Shutdown deal. Also Known As: Monster Toons AU, Monster AU Inspired by: SCP Foundation, Monster High (Kinda), and this post.

Synopsis

Long ago, humans and monsters lived together, but not in harmony. Monsters were beings to be feared, unknown entities dangerous to the peaceful lives of humans. But in the eyes of monsters, humans were barely any different...

It was because of this that the monsters and beasts went into hiding, leaving humans to believe they had simply disappeared and/or were merely works of fiction. But no...they had very much remained...

Enter the Paraview Foundation, a government funded organization founded by Arthur Walton, who believed monsters and humans could coexist in peace, and Delilah Keen, who believed understanding and researching these otherworldly creatures would benefit humanity.

Since it's founding, the Paraview Facility has become home to a whole slew of creatures discovered from many different places, from the undead, to the fae, to the otherwise otherworldly. Each with their own unique quirks and personalities.
