'Ginny & Georgia' Director James Genn Talks Season 2 and More
'Ginny & Georgia' Director James Genn Talks Season 2: Mental Health, #Marginny, #MANG, and More
It’s hard to believe it’s already been nearly two months since Ginny & Georgia returned for its sophomore season on Netflix. Season 2 quickly followed up on the first season’s success — by the first week of February, the title had been viewed for a whopping 504.77 million hours. It’s still going strong, remaining on Netflix’s Top 10 global list for English TV shows. (more

Debra-Jean Creelman Contemplates Relational Dynamics on Horn Led “Say Goodnight” feat. JP Carter of Destroyer
Tumblr media
Debra-Jean Creelman is a Vancouver based singer-songwriter best known for her expansive, emotive voice and neo-soul influenced compositions. Getting her start with pop auteurs Mother Mother in the early aughts, Creelman has built a career defined by precision, polish, and otherworldly vocal performances that have neatly sculpted landscapes of pop, jazz, and soul.
She has teamed up with experimental trumpet player JP Carter (Destroyer), multi-instrumentalist/producer Sean Cronin, and Jo Passed’s Jo Hirabiyashi to create the melodic and searching “Say Goodnight,” which questions whether it’s possible to maintain one’s artistic edge while being in love.
On July 12th, Debra-Jean Creelman unveils her fourth solo album, Ego Death, a fusion of jazz, soul and blues that lives up to its name by showcasing a supergroup-like ensemble of producers and musicians.
Former Mother Mother cohorts, Molly and Ryan Guldemond, as well as Jasmin Parkin make appearances. The deep backbone of groove comes compliments of John Raham on drums (Frazey Ford, Be Good Tanyas) and James Meger on bass (Sumner Brothers). Luminary producer Dave Genn worked closely with Creelman on vocal production.
While Creelman and co. have a watchmaker’s attention to detail, Ego Death never comes across as too technical. Creelman’s songwriting evokes a sense of depth, a fitting reflection of its thematic core: the profound loss of her mother and the delicate terrain of mental health crises.

Canadian procedural Wild Cards is coming back for a second season on The CW.
The renewal news came this morning as originating broadcaster CBC renewed the show and unveiled it at its Upfronts.
It marks a bit of good news for The CW, which canceled Walker earlier this week, while Canadian drama The Spencer Sisters, which it also aired, was canceled at CTV.
The show, stars Grey’s Anatomy’s Giacomo Gianniotti, Riverdale’s Vanessa Morgan and Jason Priestley, has been one of The CW’s stronger performers over the last year.
Earlier this month, The CW’s President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz told Deadline that he was keen to bring back the show for more episodes.
Wild Cards is a crime-solving procedural with a comedic twist that follows the unlikely duo of a gruff, sardonic cop and a spirited, clever con woman. Ellis (Gianniotti) plays a demoted detective who has spent the last year on the maritime unit, while Max (Morgan) has been living a transient life elaborately scamming everyone she meets. But when Max gets arrested and ends up helping Ellis solve a local crime, the two are offered the opportunity to redeem themselves, with Ellis going back to detective and Max staying out of jail. The catch? They have to work together, with each using their unique skills to solve crimes. Terry Chen and Karin Konoval also star.
It is produced by Blink49 Studios, Front Street Pictures and Piller/Segan with Michael Konyves as showrunner. He exec produces alongside Shawn Piller, James Genn, Lloyd Segan, Alexandra Zarowny and James Thorpe. Produced by Charles Cooper and Virginia Rankin, it is distributed internationally by Fifth Season.
The second season will premiere in winter 2025 on both The CW and CBC and consists of 13 episodes.
“We are thrilled to order a second season of The CW’s breakout series Wild Cards,” said Liz Wise Lyall, Head of Scripted Programming, The CW Network. “Wild Cards has clearly captured the imagination of our viewers thanks to exhilarating storytelling and the crackling chemistry between Vanessa and Giacomo. We are confident Wild Cards is the kind of smart and sexy blue-sky drama that could continually build its audience for years.”

Bolt the door, Maria.
Dame Olivia de Havilland’s gentle countenance and petite stature in still photographs could never capture the gentlewomanly toughness she displayed on-screen. The last-surviving major star of Hollywood’s Golden Age, de Havilland passed away yesterday at her home in Paris. She was 104. Born in Tokyo, her parents wanted to return to England following various childhood elements not helped by the Japanese climate. But they eventually stayed in California after Olivia’s sister, Joan Fontaine, developed tonsillitis during what was supposed to be a brief stopover in San Francisco. Olivia, the elder sister, learned drama and music, reading Shakespeare from an early age. This fostered her interest in community theater. She joined the Saratoga Community Theater, where she would star in various roles including as Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It is as Puck that de Havilland got the attention of Austrian director Max Reinhardt, who was seeking someone for Hermia. After her casting by Reinhardt for his production, her turn as Hermia then attracted attention from Warner Bros.
Just like that, de Havilland became a Warner Bros. contracted actor in 1934. De Havilland wanted to play challenging roles at Warner Bros. But for every Midsummer Night’s Dream or picture with Errol Flynn (who she found delightful to work with), the studio assigned her a fluffy romantic or wartime comedy that she held no passion for. By the late ïżœïżœïżœ30s/early ‘40s with her contract winding down, de Havilland began to reject more roles and was suspended multiple times by Warner Bros. as a result. A contract dispute in 1941 led her to sue Warner Bros; she won, and the precedent in the de Havilland case to this day continues to protect actors (and, in 2009, composers and musicians) from the extension of a contract without their consent. Efforts by Jack Warner to persuade other studio executives to blacklist de Havilland failed, as she was just too good an actress to pass up.
After 1941, de Havilland appeared less in films, exercising more judicious selections in her roles, but her life was no less interesting or active. Her very public feud with her sister lasted decades (they reconciled before Fontaine’s death), moved to Paris in 1953, sued FX for an inaccurate portrayal and using her likeness without her permission in a miniseries (she lost as a California court ruled that such portrayals were protected under the First Amendment), and made numerous public appearances for fans in her later years. Few actors from any era could say they made such an impact in front and behind the camera.
Nine of the films Olivia de Havilland appeared in follow (left-right, descending):
Alibi Ike (1935) – directed by Ray Enright; also starring Joe E. Brown
A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1935) – directed by Max Reinhardt and William Dieterle; also starring Jean Muir, Dick Powell, Ross Alexander, James Cagney, Mickey Rooney, Joe E. Brown, Victor Jory, Anita Louise, and Ian Hunter
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) – directed by Michael Curtiz and William Keighley; also starring Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains, and Una O’Connor; music by Erich Wolfgang Korngold
Gone with the Wind (1939) – directed by Victor Fleming; produced by David O. Selznick; also starring Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, and Hattie McDaniel; music by Max Steiner
To Each His Own (1946) – directed by Mitchell Leisen; also starring Mary Anderson, Roland Culver, and Phillip Terry
The Snake Pit (1948) – directed by Anatole Litvak; also starring Mark Stevens, Leo Genn, and Celeste Holm
My Cousin Rachel (1952) – directed by Henry Koster; also starring Richard Burton and Audrey Dalton
Light in the Piazza (1962) – directed by Guy Green; also starring Rossano Brazzi, Yvette Mimieux, George Hamilton, and Barry Sullivan
The Heiress (1949) – directed by William Wyler; also starring Montgomery Clift, Ralph Richardson, and Miriam Hopkins; music by Aaron Copland

Computer hardware designed for 3D games could hold the key to replicating human brain
Researchers at the University of Sussex have created the fastest and most energy efficient simulation of part of a rat brain using off-the-shelf computer hardware.
Tumblr media
Dr James Knight and Prof Thomas Nowotny from the University of Sussex's School of Engineering and Informatics have beaten a top 50 supercomputer by running brain simulations using their own GeNN software and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).
By developing faster and more efficient simulators, the academics hope to increase the level of understanding into brain function and, in particular, identify how damage to particular structures in neurons can lead to deficits in brain function. Faster, more advanced simulators could help improve understanding of neurological disorders by pinpointing the areas of the brain that cause epileptic seizures.
Improved simulators could also accelerate progress within the development of AI -- the GeNN software is already being used at the University of Sussex to build autonomous robots including flying drones which can be controlled through simulated insect brains.
Prof Nowotny, Professor of Informatics at the University of Sussex, said: "Over the last three decades, computers have become drastically more powerful, largely due to our ability to fabricate computer chips with smaller and smaller components which, in turn, allows them to operate faster. This process has hit a wall and it has become much harder to build faster computers without employing radically different architectures. GPUs are one such architecture and our work shows that, in the near term, they are a competitive design for high performance computing and have the potential to make advances far beyond where CPUs have brought us to so far."
The research involved using the team's own GeNN software to implement and test two established computational neuroscience models; one of a cortical microcircuit consisting of eight populations of neurons and a balanced random network with spike-timing dependent plasticity -- a process which has been shown to be fundamental to biological learning.
A single GPU was able to achieve processing speeds up to 10% faster than is currently possible using either a supercomputer or the SpiNNaker neuromorphic system, a custom-built machine developed as a part of the ÂŁ1bn European Human Brain Project (HBP).
The University of Sussex team were also able to achieve energy savings of 10 times compared to either the SpiNNaker or supercomputer simulations.
Moving forward, the academics believe that the flexibility and power of GPUs means that they could play a key role in creating simulators capable of running models that begin to approach the complexity of the human brain.
Dr Knight, Research Fellow in Computer Science at the University of Sussex, said: "Although we're a long way from having the understanding necessary to build models of the entire human brain, we're approaching the point where the latest exascale supercomputers have the raw computing power that would be required to simulate them. Many of these systems rely on GPUs so we're delighted with these latest results which show how well-suited GPUs are to brain simulations. Over the next year we are hoping to extend our work to a model 50 times larger of a monkey visual systems by using multiple, interconnected GPUs."
Chris Emerson, head of Higher-Education and Research Sales in UK and Ireland at NVIDIA, said: "We are very impressed by the use of the NVIDIA AI compute platform for brain simulations spear-headed at the University of Sussex and are glad we are able to support research at the leading edge of computational neuroscience as well as AI."
