Alleged missing N43bn: Reps threaten NCAA management

The House of Representatives has threatened to hand over management of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This is over the alleged missing N43 billion. The notification was issued in Abuja on Monday by Rep. James Faleke, Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, during an interactive session with revenue-generating agencies. According to data given by the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), local airlines transported 16 million passengers in 2022. It was found that international carriers transported three million passengers. Reports have it that N1.28 trillion was made from tickets sold to overseas passengers, with N64 billion representing 5% of the total divided by the five regulatory bodies in 2022. It was also confirmed that the ADR16 papers held by the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) revealed that local airlines transported 14,572,614 passengers in 2021. According to the records given to the Committee, the NCAA declared N12.7 billion in revenue from the share of gross revenue allotted to industry regulating organizations. The legislator, however, stated that the amount was less than the NCAA’s projected gross revenue share of N66 billion realized from both domestic and international travel revenues in 2022. By • Olalekan Fagbade Fresh APC Crisis; Governor, Senator lead protest to Ganduje’s residence       Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello has led a protest to the residence of the National Chairman of the All Progressives (APC), Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, demanding the immediate resignation of the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary-designate, Duro Meseko. Bello and his entourage left the party secretariat for the home of the national chairman at about 6.15pm after the planned inauguration of the National Working Committee zonal officers was abandoned. Before his arrival, former Senator for the Cross River South Senatorial District of Cross River State, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, who was earlier spotted at the party secretariat had led another protest delegation to Ganduje’s residence. Ita-Giwa, who was accompanied by the Chairman of Cross River APC, Adolphus Ogar to Ganduje’s residence. While demanding to see the national chairman at his residence, she was said to have demanded an explanation on why former Cross River State Commissioner for Local Government, Dr Stella Odey-Ekpo, was dropped for Dr Mary Idele from Edo State. Ogar told journalists that “The position of the National Women Leader previously held by Dr Betta Edu has always been rotated between Cross River and Akwa Ibom. We don’t know why it was taken away from us. “We urge the national chairman and the NWC to do the right thing,” he said. The development is coming after Bello stormed the national headquarters of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja with his loyalists ahead of the inauguration of the new zonal officers of the party’s National Working Committee. Hours after his arrival, a number of Kogi lawmakers from the Senate and House of Representatives were also seen joining him. Although Ganduje and the National Secretary of the party, Senator Ajibola Basiru were absent, officials of the secretariat could be heard discussing in hush tones that the Kogi governor was obviously there to disrupt the inauguration. Commenting on this, a source who craved anonymity, said: “Bello and those lawmakers just coming in are here for just one reason – to ensure this inauguration doesn’t hold. Of course, we are all aware that his nominee, who was the ex-Special Adviser on Water Resources in Kogi, Yahaya Ismail was dropped in favour of Duro Mesoko for the position of Deputy National Publicity Secretary. “This same Bello was with Ganduje at his residence last night. Despite the explanation by the chairman that Mesoko was given the position to compensate James Faleke for withdrawing from the Kogi governorship primary and for not making Tinubu’s ministerial list, Bello insisted that he won’t be cowed into accepting the deal,” a source at the secretariat told our correspondent. The intimidating presence of Bello and his team of loyalists seemed to also trouble supporters of Mesoko, who sat quietly at the media centre with the embattled deputy publicity secretary-designate as many of them kept urging him to remain calm as they waited patiently for the swearing-in ceremony. While the waiting game continued, an emissary came to invite Mesoko for a meeting with the governor. Barely 30 minutes after their closed-door meeting, the delegation came out of the secretariat fuming that they wouldn’t accept the deal. When The PUNCH accosted one of Meseko’s supporters, he said, “Just imagine the way the governor and those lawmakers were harassing him. They wanted to know why he didn’t turn down the appointment when he was offered. “But when Hon Meseko insisted that he deserved it having worked for the party at the State level and the victory of Asiwaju, they told him to resign immediately or risk jeorpadising his political career in Kogi. President-elect, Bola Tinubu and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are weighing options ahead of the 10th National Assembly (NASS) inauguration. Tinubu and Vice President-elect, Kashim Shettima moved into the Defence House in Abuja on Wednesday, their official residence until swearing-in on May 29. Tinubu hosted Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Deputy – Ovie Omo-Agege, House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamiala, Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa). Others were Abdullahi Adamu (APC chairman), Iyiola Omisore (secretary), Senators Orji Kalu, Rochas Okorocha, Opeyemi Bamidele, Jibrin Barau; Hon. James Faleke, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin and Hon. Muktar Betara. Lagos Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, former VP candidate placeholder Kabiru Masari, business mogul Aliko Dangote, Nuhu Ribadu (ex-EFCC chairman) also visited the residence. At separate and joint meetings with party members, Tinubu discussed the composition of the leadership of the 10th NASS as part of efforts to reach a possible consensus. The top four positions are expected to be shared among the four regions outside the South-West and North-East where Tinubu and Shettima hail from. DAILY POST gathered that the Senate Presidency may go to the South-South (a Christian), while the Speakership may go to the North-West (a Muslim). The North-Central is being considered for the Deputy Senate Presidency, while a South-Easterner may become the next Deputy Speaker. Godswill Akpabio is vying for Senate Presidency though he faces opposition by those still angry about how he became the Minority Leader of the 8th Senate despite being a first timer. Senate Chief Whip, Orji Kalu too is interested but there are factors against him. His region produced the least votes for the APC and he initially wanted Lawan as the presidential candidate. For Speakership, though Betara is one of the contenders, the fact that he hails from the same region and state (Borno) as the VP-elect may rule him out. Meanwhile, Senators from Tinubu’s state, Lagos, are likely to get key offices: Solomon Adeola (Appropriation committee) and Tokunbo Abiru (Banking and Insurance committee). Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti) may become Senate Leader. Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly is expected to start on June 13 tentatively, two weeks after the inauguration of Tinubu and Shettima at the Eagle Square. Read the full article
