Bluntblackjew via Instagram: "Jamaican Jewish history is so extensive that this post would, instead of 7 slides, probably extend to 30 or more. That is what I love about the history of Jamaica, and the fact this is history is living history. This condensed version is how Jamaican Jews came as refugees and became one of the many people on the island to directly influence history "Jews in the Caribbean, especially Safardi Jews, never disappeared. We continue to exist, and I hope this post educates and removes the erasure of our history that we continue to see."

I never truly understood the significance of death. Not the passing of a loved one but the collective significance of death. This book took me to a place where death was a freedom; a power, for the enslaved. The slave trade created an environment where death wasn’t an ending but a righteous beginning. It created a space where folklore and traditions were merged and blended into a powerful newness which kept culture, hope and resilience alive. It kept us alive. But I won’t pretend this was an easy read, it has coloured my world forever, dressed it in something between pride and anger, pity and inspiration- it is yet to settle somewhere inside of me. There are more accounts like this for me to read, to take in and find a home. Today, I now know I’m no where near as resilient as my ancestors - sometimes dance parties and meditation just isn’t enough. However, it’s a must read, told with knowledge, care and pride. Thank you @professorvbrown - your insight and work has been invaluable to my project.

This is why I can't sleep late on the weekend. No sleep or relaxing. Always was woken up to clean. West Indian parents have no chill when it comes to doing chores. #growingupwestindian #Repost @exhibitionj (@get_repost) ・・・ Our Fallahwaz Fambily decided overwhelmingly in our last post about this, that this WAS NOT #CHILDABUSE. On this day in history: June 7, 1692 "The #Earthquake at Port Royal in Jamaica which happened on Tuesday the 7th of June 1692. Where, in two minutes time the town was sunk under ground and two thousand souls perished." This newspaper clipping from the NLJ collection shows an illustration of the damage done by the natural disaster which took place three hundred and twenty-eight years ago today. #BlackHistory Bessie Stringfield  born Bessie Beatrice White (1911 or 1912 – February 16, 1993) Hometown: disputed Edenton, North Carolina or Kingston, Jamaica Known as "the Motorcycle Queen of Miami," Bessie Stringfield started riding when she was 16. She was the first African-American woman to travel cross-country solo, and she did it at age 19 in 1929, riding a 1928 Indian Scout. Bessie traveled through all of the lower 48 states during the ’30s and ’40s at a time when the country was rife with prejudice and hatred. During this time, she earned money from performing motorcycle stunts in carnival shows. Due to her skin color, Stringfield was often denied accommodation while traveling, so she would sleep on her motorcycle at filling stations. Due to her sex, she was refused prizes in flat track races she entered. She later rode in Europe, Brazil, and Haiti and as one of the few civilian motorcycle despatch riders for the US Army during World War II. Credited with breaking down barriers for both women and Jamaican-American motorcyclists, Stringfield was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. The award bestowed by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) for "Superior Achievement by a Female Motorcyclist" is named in her honor. In the 1950s Stringfield moved to Miami, Florida, where at first she was told "nigger women are not allowed to ride motorcycles" by the local police. After repeatedly being pulled over and harassed by officers, she visited the police captain. They went to a nearby park to prove her riding abilities. She gained the captain's approval to ride and did not have any more trouble with the police. She qualified as a nurse there and founded the Iron Horse Motorcycle Club. Her skill and antics at motorcycle shows gained the attention of the local press, leading to the nickname of "The Negro Motorcycle Queen". This nickname later changed to "The Motorcycle Queen of Miami", a moniker she carried for the remainder of her life. #Indian #indianmotorcycle #Harley #harleydavidson #wwii #motorcycle #bike #USA #us #American #America #Africa #African #Jamaica #Jamaican #ushistory #jamaicanhistory #worldhistory #travel #traveling #worldtraveler (at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt0mIRGHyB_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=8o94q37q2ir2
