Miss Universe Jamaica 2023 National Costume
Founded in 1494 by the Spanish, Port Royal was once the largest, wealthiest city in the Caribbean and served as the premier hub for trade and commerce. The city is associated with descriptive stories of grandeur, pirates, treasures, excesses and debauchery and was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1692, where a large portion of the city sank into the Caribbean Sea and the remaining portion was consistently ravaged by successive earthquakes and hurricanes. Over the centuries, the residents of Port Royal have defied all odds, remaining resilient and steadfast, and continue to make Port Royal their home despite many challenges. In 1996, Port Royal was declared a Protected National Heritage Site by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust and is celebrated, among other aspects, as the only sunken city in the Western Hemisphere, with a well preserved heritage of Jamaica's rich architecture and artifacts relating to the colourful stories handed down through the ages; stories depicting the culture of a glorious bygone era. The sunken city also boasts a vivid profusion of marine life, which forms a part of its many breathtaking treasures and is mainly what the costume depicts and celebrates. So, as we currently battle with climate change and the onslaught of increased and severe natural disasters, it becomes increasingly more important to preserve and protect our national heritage and natural treasures to ensure that they remain with us for future generations to experience and enjoy. This is a call to the Universe, let's all start playing our part in protecting our resources, and let's begin today.

Old Naval Hospital, Port Royal, St. Catherine, Jamaica
Tumblr media
[Fun Fact]
Built around 1818, the Historic Naval Hospital is an early example of the use of cast iron in construction. It was designed by a team headed by naval architect Edward Holl and constructed using the labour of enslaved Africans. The prefabricated cast iron units were imported from Sheffield, England, and the bricks were made from local clay. The building rests on a raft foundation, that is, all supporting iron columns are linked beneath the surface.
The hospital was built on the foundations of an earlier one erected in 1743 and destroyed by fire in 1812. Outbuildings included kitchens, staff quarters, isolation ward, mortuary, and a storeroom. The services at the new hospital received high praise from those who were treated there. One of the first to be nursed at the hospital was Captain Botelier.

Good morning, good afternoon or whatever time it is! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at the breakfast bar of my friend’s beautiful house in Jamaica, attired in shorts and T-shirt (the blue towelling robe has stayed in London), enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Happy Hump Day!
The wake is not until Thursday, so I have another day with my friends in Tower Isle. Tuesday was a very enjoyable tour of the island. Luckily for me, Brian and Denise needed to make stops in different places. It was almost like being in a reggae song; we passed through Kingston Town, Up Park Camp and Spanish Town, stopping in Portmore and this amazing place called Devon House in St. Andrew. Built in 1881, it’s the former residence of George Stiebel, Jamaica's first black millionaire. His residence has been restored and is operated as a house museum and National Heritage Site. We didn’t even visit the house, we just went to the Devon House bakery for probably the most delicious pattie I’ve ever had in my life! We didn’t stop off at the Devon House ice cream parlour, which I hear is amazing. Another time. My taste buds have truly been caressed over the last 48 hours!
Sitting in the back of the car, smiling to myself, the warm breeze rushing through my hair, my peace was broken by a phone call from London, and news that a lovely singer I’ve known for 40 years had just died. Life is short.
We’ve been absorbed with the recent P.Diddy revelations. A lot of very big names have been dragged into this story. There are some very strong and very strange allegations being made by commentators on YouTube and Twitter. It made me think about who we can trust. Who can we believe in? Who should we be admiring and idolising? How many of these wealthy, high-profile musicians/producers are actually just pimps and/or perverts? And did they even get into music to make great music? Young people view them as role models! It makes me question everybody and everything.
Have a wonderful and well-endowed Wednesday. I love you all. Yes, a crazy, bald man loves and cares about you.

Featuring new home and away kits for the Reggae Boyz (Men’s Team) and Reggae Girlz (Women’s Team), the three partners have united with a shared ambition to celebrate the powerful relationship between Jamaican culture and football, with a collection that transcends the sport, creating the ultimate fusion of football, culture and fashion.
The versatile four-piece game day collection also features a pre-match jersey and reversible anthem jacket, inviting fans from different cultures, backgrounds, and generations into the celebration of the Jamaican football community.
Inspired by Jamaican style and culture, the range sports a mixture of classic adidas silhouettes and elegant Wales Bonner signatures – offering a collection fit for the pitch, alongside casual staples to be sported off it.
This is the latest collection from the successful partnership between adidas and Wales Bonner, following the inaugural adidas Originals collection (Nov 2020), inspired by her own Jamaican heritage and the Caribbean community’s cross-cultural influence.
REGGAE BOYZ AND REGGAE GIRLZ PRODUCT DETAILS:
Home Jersey
The striking new Jamaica home jersey features the country’s rich national colors of black, gold, and green

Pre-match Jersey and Anthem Jacket
A pre-match jersey , worn by the national team’s players before kick-off, is inspired by conventional patterns found on traditional Fair Isle knitwear - bringing to life Wales Bonner’s design approach that weaves the heritage of the African diaspora with European designs – by imbuing the traditional Scottish style with twilight colors of the Caribbean, alongside a golden sun motif.
A reversible Jamaica anthem jacket, crafted for pre-game preparation, shows off the iconic gold of Jamaican sunlight on the outside, and an expressive Fair Isle graphic on the inside.
All three jerseys are made with sweat-wicking or moisture absorbent AEROREADY technology and specially placed breathable mesh inserts, keeping the players feeling comfortable while competing on the pitch and fans feeling comfortable while showing their support.
The range is also made using 100% recycled materials, continuing adidas’ commitment to help end plastic waste.
Grace Wales Bonner said: “The opportunity to design the first on pitch kits for the Jamaican national teams with adidas Football has been such a special opportunity. It has meant so much to me personally and I am very grateful for the support and trust of adidas Football and the Jamaican Football Federation.
For the collection we set out to celebrate Jamaican style and to offer something timeless, elegant and essential. I hope the shirts bring joy to the wearers and carry forward the everlasting beauty and uplifting spirit of the island.”
Michael Ricketts, the JFF President, said: “Ahead of an exciting year for our Reggae Boyz and Reggae Girlz teams, we’re incredibly proud to unveil these very exciting team kits and sportswear. We believe these designs capture the essence of Jamaica’s culture, as they not only represent Jamaican football but - through the mixture of the distinctive Jamaican colors and designs - they highlight the greatest part of our world-renowned Jamaican culture.
We can’t wait to see Jamaican fans and players alike wearing the kits with pride on the world’s biggest sporting stages, as they cheer on the Reggae Boyz and Girlz.
With a bold ambition to further develop the opportunities for girls and boys to play grassroots football at home in Jamaica , this only marks the start of what we are certain will be an incredibly important partnership to inspire future Reggae Girlz and Reggae Boyz.”
Lorenzo Reich, adidas Senior Director Global Sports Marketing - Football Clubs & Federations said: “We’re hugely excited to be launching the first collection in our partnership with the Jamaican Football Federation and continue our relationship with Wales Bonner – who, in the past, has been at the forefront of designing some of our most sought after adidas collections.
Blending classic silhouettes from the brand with the iconic style of the artist, we’re proud to have created a range that transcends football - creating the ultimate fusion of football, culture and fashion. In what is a huge year for both the men’s and women’s teams, we’re hoping it’s a collection in which many special memories will be created, by fans and athletes alike.”
The coming year is a hugely important one for both Jamaican Football teams – with the Reggae Girlz competing in only their second FIFA Women's World Cup 2023™ in Australia and New Zealand , and the Reggae Boyz continuing a successful run of form during their CONCACAF Nations League campaign – both jerseys are a fitting homage to modern Jamaica , that aims to empower fans to support their team, home and away.
On home soil in Jamaica , the partnership aims to develop grassroots participation – by capturing the imaginations of the next generation of Reggae Boyz and Reggae Girlz, while working closely with the Jamaica Football Federation and local organisations to grow and develop the opportunities for all to play – ensuring the future of football in the iconic nation is brighter than ever.
The Reggae Girlz will debut the game day collection during the FFA Cup of Nations being held from February 13th – 25th 2023. The new home kit will first appear on pitch against Spain on February 16th, with the new away kit debuting on February 22nd against Australia . His ball, 1st incontestible in Portsmouth, England, in 1829, was a crude broadcast system, the simplest way to relay time to anyone United Nations agency may see the signal. Typically, at 12:55, a creaky piece of machinery would raise an outsized painted orb halfway to the highest of a pole or flagstaff; at 12:58, it might proceed to the top; and exactly at 13:00, an employee would unleash it to sink the pole. “It may be a clear signal,” same Andrew Jacob, a keeper WHO operates the time ball at the state capital Observatory in Australia. “It’s straightforward to visualize the explosive movement because it begins to drop.” Before the time ball’s invention, a ship’s master would generally return toward land ANd physically visit an observatory to examine his watch against a politician clock. Then he would quite virtually bring time back to the ship. Wauchope’s invention let sailors calibrate their sea measuring system, known as a clock, while not deed their boat. “We’re thus accustomed present here and accessible, which wasn’t invariably the case,” same Emily Akkermans, WHO has the desirable title, keeper of your time, at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. And it too marks New Year’s with a special time of day performance on thirty-one Dec. Jeremy Davies-Webb, chairman of the Deal depository Trust, says he is aware of 4 alternative operating time balls apart from the borough, Deal, and Sydney, though on any given day it’s doable they won’t be operational because of atmospheric condition or breakdown. The Rich History and Vibrant Present of Barbican, St. Andrew, Jamaica
Barbican: A Poetic Tribute In the heart of St. Andrew, where history whispers, Lies Barbican, a place where time still glimmers. From Taino paths and windswept plains, To sugar mills and colonial reigns. Ancient echoes in the stones we tread, Whispers of Taino, long since fled. Their middens tell of days gone by, Of simple lives beneath the sky. The windmill stands, a sentinel old, Its stories…

St. Thomas- from Pera through Cane Fields to the Lighthouse
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Exploring and driving through the green cane fields, we found this canoe moored at this waterway: the sea must be close by.
Tumblr media
Looking out from higher points on the drive we could see over the cane beyond to the mangroves then out to the blues of the Caribbean Sea.
Tumblr media
Success: We found the intersection that pointed to the lighthouse.
Tumblr media
Driving 30 minutes more through cane fields, we passed only 3 motorbikes with 2 men on each bike, with their spear guns and catch of the day. As we do, a quick exchange with each group was had seeing what they had caught. A small barracuda was one.
We transitioned from driving through desolate cane fields to a desolate “road” well cleared between the mangrove swamps, where we interrupted the peaceful families of cows dotted along the way.
During the rainy season it could be difficult to negotiate parts of this road. Perhaps you’d even spot a crocodile or 2😉
We got to the large bay and spotted the lighthouse on the other side. We were there!
Tumblr media
“The Morant Point Lighthouse built in 1841 is listed by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust as a National Monument. It is the oldest lighthouse in the island. Built of cast iron tube, cast in London, it is 100 feet long with a diameter of 5 feet at the base, and 3 feet at the cap. It is located in the most easterly point of the Island. The labour used in erecting the Lighthouse was supplied by kru-men from Africa. They were among the free Africans who were brought to Jamaica.” See Jamaica Heritage Trust.
Tumblr media
It is the oldest lighthouse on the island and the first cast iron lighthouse built in the Western Hemisphere. Wikipedia
Height: 29 m
Tumblr media
Time to head back to Kingston, but our curiosity made us stop where we spotted, what we fantasized, would have been a Manor before it fell to ruin. Those cut stones were impressive.
Tumblr media
A 45 minute drive back through the swamp road and cane fields we arrived at the Duckenfield Sugar Factory.
We headed back to the main road, confirming along the way that we are on the right route: google was testing my faith in the directions given by the people because it showed a hypotenuse route which appeared shorter, of course. A route taxi driver insisted not to go the hypotenuse route because that was into the villages, on bad road. We were done with off road for the day!
Thirsty, we stopped along the way for an ice cold Red Stripe, which was served to us in the car. Only in JA!

Bog Walk, St. Catherine by @sheldonlev The name Bog Walk is derived from the Spanish words Boca de Agua which means water's mouth. It is not known when the Spaniards entered this area of the island though they had an active involvement up to the time of the conquest of the Island in 1655. During the 1660s, after the British occupation, the Bog Walk Gorge or Rio Cobre Gorge was discovered by Carey Helyar. In 1770 the first road was cut through the Gorge. The first bridge, connecting both sides of the gorge, was of wood but was later replaced by the present structure, the Flat Bridge, which is constructed from cut stone and mortar. Oakton House, Half Way Tree, St. Andrew, Jamaica
[Fun Fact]
Displaying features informed by Georgian architecture, Oakton house was erected around the middle of the nineteenth century. No record has been found to indicate the original owner of the house, but at one time it was an exclusive school run by one Ms. Bovell, and one Mrs. Van Koolenburg ran it as a guesthouse in the 1920s.
It then became the home of W.E. Powell whose famous bakery was a short distance from the house, near the present clock tower in Half Way Tree. In the 1930s his heirs sold it to the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation, and it was used as a fire station until the 1960s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After many years of neglect, this house has been beautifully restored. Oakton house was declared a national monument by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust on April 4, 1991.

Explore NYC like a local - Crazy sexy fun traveler
16 Jul2021
New York City is a fantastic destination for any traveler. With a mix of different cultures, incredible monuments, and exotic food joints – the city is full of so many places to visit that it might seem overwhelming. While the famous tourist attractions include the iconic Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Empire State Building, and Central Park (to name a few), NYC is so much more than that! But can you explore NYC like a local, and not like a tourist?
We don’t mean that you shouldn’t visit these places. What we’re saying is that NYC is home to even amazing spots that are underrated and often hidden from plain sight. From the Whispering Arch of the Grand Central to the beautiful Stone Street in Manhattan, there are scores of hidden gems in this city that are sure to take your breath away.
Today, we’ll explore some ‘secret,’ not-so-famous attractions that you must see when visiting New York City. So, let’s explore NYC like a local!
      1. Visit the Morgan Library and Museum in Murray Hill
This beautiful and historic library feels more like a scene from a Harry Potter movie than a library. Built for Pierpont Morgan between 1902-1906, this momentous building was formerly known as the Pierpont Morgan Library.
It currently houses a museum with a huge collection of manuscripts, books, and artworks and is located between 36th street to the south at 225 Madison Avenue. You can find more about the rich heritage and visitor timings on the library’s website.
  2. Walk through New York’s Breathtaking Glass Waterfall
After just a 4-minute walk from Times Square, you’ll reach what’s called the glass waterfall. Snuggled against one side of the famous McGraw-Hill building, it’s a thing of shimmering beauty.
As you stand below the waterfall and allow the water to fall majestically over the glass dome, you feel a sense of relaxation amongst the busy life in New York City. We are not exaggerating; you can clearly see each droplet of water reflected on the glass surface. It’s a pity if you miss this spot during your visit.
  3. See the Smallpox Hospital in Roosevelt Island’s
This hospital has a spooky history. It was built on Roosevelt Island in 1856 to quarantine people suffering from smallpox. Featuring a Gothic Revival style, the hospital treated about 7,000 patients every year during its prime.
It was abandoned in the 1950s but was declared a city landmark by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1975. There are rumors of ghosts and other supernatural activity within the hospital, so it’s better to visit it during the daytime and take someone with you if you’re faint-hearted. It sure is a must-see spot for all adrenaline junkies!
  4. Visit Stone Street in Manhattan
Manhattan is considered one of the best places to stay while visiting New York City by Selina.com. It is competing mainly with Brooklyn for the title of “best borough in NYC”. Both have outstanding reputations, but Manhattan has Stone street, as well.
Located between Whitehall Street in the west to Hanover Square in the east, Stone Street was one of the first streets to be paved with cobblestones and was formerly called Duke Street. Today, it is famous for its eating places and restaurants and is ideal for visiting during the night.
  5. Visit the Dead Horse Bay in Brooklyn
Dead Horse Bay is a landfill situated between Marine Park and Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn. This peculiar bay is covered with thousands of glass bottles and other indecomposable material.
Contrary to other places on this list, it is not a location known for its scenic beauty but a reminder about NYC’s past. A time before cars, when people drove horse-and-buggies, and dead horse carcasses were used to manufacture glue and fertilizers.
Dead Horse Bay offers curious minds a glimpse into the past dating as far back as 100 years.
  6. See the Old City Hall Subway Station
One of the most remarkable stations in NYC, the Old City Hall station is located at the end of the 6 train line, which terminates at the Brooklyn Bridge in Lower Manhattan. It was closed in the 20th century.
With its stained-glass windows and meticulously designed arches, the Old City Hall station is a true remnant of the old New York City. Having said that, it can be relatively tricky for you to visit.
The MTA Transit Museum runs tours of the station on certain special occasions. These tours allow tourists to catch a glimpse of this marvel of engineering and design. So, it is recommended to check the timings and dates of these visits if you wish to see the station.
  7. Experience the Waterfall in Greenacre Park, Midtown
The Greenacre park in Midtown East is famous for its 25-foot waterfall constructed from huge sculpted granite blocks. Built in 1971 by the Greenacre Foundation, it offers tourists a nice distraction from the busy streets of NYC.
Having received several awards for its design, the park has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the US Department of Interior. You can find everything about this exotic location on their official website.
  8. See the amazing Fort Tryon Park in Inwood
Get prepared to be amazed by these massive stone arches that look out of another century. The last standing remains of the Tryon Hall Mansion; these stone arches were built between 1901-1905.
Fort Tryon Park is probably NYC’s most beautiful piece of outdoor artwork. An interesting fact about this park, apart from the marvelous stone arches, is that it is home to Manhattan’s largest dog run. You can find the entire history of this park along with the public activities currently on offer on the park website.
  9. Whispering Arch of Grand Central Station
The whispering Arch in the Grand Central Station is another amazing hidden attraction in NYC. Well, this one is more like an open secret and is something you have to hear instead of seeing.
All you have to do is to stand facing the corner of the arches and ask a friend to stand on the opposite side of the arches. Now even if you speak in a normal tone, you’ll be amazed to find that your voice will clearly be heard on the other side!
This neat acoustic trick is because of a clever design known as the whispering gallery. Because of its dramatic and unique method of communication, this spot is famous for marriage proposals.
  NYC Grand Central Station
  10. Observe the Bird Habitats of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Queens
Having saved one of the best spots for the last, we now present to you the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. One of the largest bird habitats in the US, it includes 12,600 acres of water, salt marshes, and upland fields.
Created in the 1950s, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is a great place to observe seasonal bird migration. You can visit Jamaica Bay’s website for complete information about the timings and driving directions.
  To Sum Up
Phew! That was quite a list.
These were some of the ‘secret’ places to visit in NYC that not everyone has heard of. By visiting these spots, you will be exploring NYC like a local, and that’s really something!
TIP: In the past I published another article about alternative atractions in New York City. Check it out! NYC has a lot to offer beside the main tourist spots, trust me.
Have you been to NYC? If so, are you familiar with the places mentioned in this article? Tell me in the comments below.

Bath Preservation Trust appoints Design Team for Beckford’s Tower
Bath Preservation Trust (BPT) has announced that architects Thomas Ford & Partners and quantity surveyors Stenning & Co have been appointed to lead the design work for the £3.3 million Our Tower project.
The Our Tower plan, which is funded by Historic England and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, will address urgent repair and conservation works required to the almost 200-year-old Grade I listed Beckford’s Tower, that stands above the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bath and is the only museum dedicated to William Beckford in the world.
Born in 1760, William Beckford was a colourful and controversial character. At just 10-years old he inherited his father’s fortune, which included the Fonthill estate and several sugar plantations in Jamaica. His wealth gave him the freedom to pursue his interests in art, architecture, writing and music.
In 1782, Beckford undertook a Grand Tour, which inspired his travel writing and passion for collecting which continued throughout his life – especially when exiled to Europe for 10 years following the exposure of his relationship with William Courtenay (1784).
In 1826 William Beckford commissioned an extraordinary landscape back home in Bath – a Garden between his Lansdown Crescent home and the retreat now known as Beckford’s Tower, where he could escape from the city within the natural environment. The Tower was created to house his library, art collection and every day Beckford would ride up there from his home, accompanied by his pack of spaniels. This expanse became known as Beckford’s Ride, a mile of interlinked gardens.

Beckford’s Tower stands in an exposed location and, like many historic buildings, almost two centuries of exposure to weather, pollution, and the challenges of climate change, now threaten the fabric of the building. There is now an urgent need for repair and conservation, particularly to address water ingress at high level within the belvedere & lantern. Beckford’s Tower was added to the Historic England ‘Heritage at Risk’ Register in October 2019.
Our Tower will bring new parts of the tower into use, and upgrade services and visitor infrastructure. BPT will also use the project as an opportunity to develop the visitor experience, engage wider audiences and reconnect the Tower with its lost landscape, through new experiences, interpretation, and access. A development grant awarded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund is also enabling Bath Preservation Trust to re-examine the way in which they share the story of William Beckford’s links to the transatlantic slave trade.

The project is scheduled to complete in winter 2023.
London based conservation architects Thomas Ford & Partners are led by Clive England, who brings over 30 years’ experience to the project. Clive is Surveyor of the Fabric to Ely Cathedral, and Cathedral Architect to Sheffield Cathedral.
Stenning & Co – who are located in Bath – are led by Quantity Surveyor Adrian Stenning. Experts and specialists in building conservation work, Adrian has worked extensively with organisations including the Landmark Trust and the National Trust.
BPT Capital Works Director Simon Butler said “We are delighted to welcome Thomas Ford & Partners and Stenning & Co to the project. Both bring huge conservation experience to this nationally important building, and we look forward to securing an exciting new future for this Bath landmark.”
Clive England said: “We are delighted to be involved with BPT’s Our Tower project. Beckford’s Tower is a unique building, in a spectacular setting, with a fascinating history – exactly the type of project that every conservation architect dreams about!”
Adrian Stenning said “I am very pleased to continue my relationship with the Bath Preservation Trust and in particular Beckford’s Tower with which I have been involved for over 20 years.  I look forward to this opportunity to not just repair the Tower, but to also open up & show its’ story for a wider audience.”
Securing the Design team is just the start of this project, with urgent fundraising now needed to ensure vital conservation work to the building and landscape takes place, to ensure today’s visitors and future generations can continue to explore and enjoy this iconic Bath landmark.
