I think we all need to take a stepback and realize that what she’s doing in Toe era is exactly how she has been cleverly utilizing her toys since Day 1,
1. marketing chess pieces in her game strategy to be #1.
2. smokescreen palatable for the mass audience to represent what’s happening off screen
3. protect her and her lover’s privacy from prying cynic eyes
It’s her right to keep her private life, private. It’s her prerogative to come out. No matter how much we want to celebrate her for what she is, and how much coming out for someone at her status will do for other queer people — I think we need to put ourselves in her shoes to see that this is her trying within her own means. The amount of gay in her art, her advocacy for LGBTQ and appreciation for other queer artists, she doesn’t necessarily have to do but she does. Taylor Swift TM does not benefit substantially when she does these, and in fact puts her safe good girl brand at risk.
It’s easy for the lines to blur when you see one image, but it is the price musicians have to pay. So when you do see a stunt of any kind, gentle reminder that Taylor Swift is not the intricately created hetero-friendly product, Taylor Swift TM. Taylor Swift TM is her business, she is the CEO — the soul within that fuels the product. Just like any CEO, she needs to be duplicitous in a sense (exactly as she said) where she might need to make tough business decisions for a living (that both fulfills her passion and guarantees financial security of her loved ones) but does not purely reflect how she is as a daughter, a friend, a lover or a mother.
