Caladrius
Tumblr media
“Helper” © Jaimie Whitbread. Accessed at her deviantArt page here
[With six bestiaries and 120+ AP entries, I’m very surprised that Pathfinder RPG doesn’t have a caladrius yet.]
Caladrius This beautiful white bird bears a serene expression on its face.
A caladrius, sometimes called a “doctor bird” or a “martyr bird”, is a holy creature devoted to healing the sick and wounded. Although they are native to goodly planes such as Heaven and Nirvana, they are commonly found on the Material Plane, where they treat the sick and wounded who have suffered in the line of duty to righteous causes. Although they are bestial in appearance and cannot speak, caladriuses are as intelligent as people. Those that treat them as mere animals are likely to be treated coldly, and the caladrius may refuse to heal even good-aligned creatures unless they apologize for the slight.
Although caladriuses cannot cure diseases and poisons directly, they can draw the affliction into their own bodies, transferring the illness from the afflicted to themselves. A caladrius does not use this ability lightly, as many caladriuses do perish from especially pernicious poisons and diseases they bring upon themselves. Even though caladriuses have no need for money, they do accept payment for their healing services—these are typically donated to goodly churches or holy causes, but a caladrius may wear a particularly eye-catching (and lightweight) piece of jewelry.
A caladrius stands no more than a foot high, with a wingspan approaching three feet. They do not require food, but do enjoy eating, particularly seafood dishes. A good-aligned spellcaster of at least 7th level can take a caladrius as a familiar with the Improved Familiar feat.

The caladrius makes a caster level check with an additional +4 bonus (+7 for a typical specimen) against the DC of the affliction. If it succeeds, the creature is no longer afflicted, but the caladrius gains the affliction and takes the initial damage from it (no save). The caladrius can then make saves as normal against the affliction. Natural Healer (Ex) A caladrius does not take any penalties to Heal checks for not using a healing kit, and can treat deadly wounds without a healing kit. A caladrius can provide long term care for as many as twelve creatures at a time.
