Changing headlight bulbs on a 2011-2019 Jaguar XJ

Jaguars have a reputation (from the bad old days) of being unreliable and difficult to repair. I'm here to tell you that conventional wisdom is wrong about the first part. But there's no reason it should be this difficult to change a lightbulb.

I mean, you have to completely remove the front fascia and bumper, and unfasten the wheelwell linings, to reach the bolts that hold the headlight assembly in place (circled in this photo after removal). And there's no way to access the sealed box where the headlight lives without removing the entire assembly.

But gosh did this need replacing - check out the difference between burned-out and new bulb.

The most challenging part is reaching behind the loosened wheelwell cover (with the grille, behind the headlight assembly power-supply) to remove some impossible-to-reach bolts without removing strips of skin (gloves are too bulky for the fiddly task).

As big a job as this appears, the project only took about three hours (including studying a couple of how-to YouTube videos). Even so, that's about two and a half hours longer than it should take to change a lightbulb.

But it's worth it!

Not only is this the most beautiful and well-engineered vehicle I've ever driven, and an indescribable pleasure to be wrapped inside (can you say heated and cooled massaging seats and gorgeous burlwood all around?), its lightweight all-aluminum construction, 8-speed transmission, and direct-injection V-6 make it the most fuel-efficient, as well.

This is going to be our wedding and honeymoon trip carriage!
Perhaps the best part is that we got this delightful machine (used) for less than the original buyer paid in taxes. Ten years of depreciation and an unflattering reliability history from prior generations mean you can pick up one of these kitties for about the price of a Toyota of comparable age.
Would I recommend other non-rich folks get a modern Jaguar? Dealer prices for parts and labor make these best for do-it-yourselfers. I mean, three hours to change a lightbulb, amirite?
But if you're comfortable working on your own vehicle and have the tools to do the task (it requires some funky driver heads and a bendy ratchet), wholeheartedly yes! Replacement parts are no more expensive than for any other car if you order from Rock Auto or such.
Rich people shouldn't have all the fun.

Only 1,791 people loved this underwhelming GT enough to buy one in 2019. Toyota sells more Land Cruisers. But fear not, Super-Leicht faithful, help in the form of a new SL is arriving next year.
Billed as the 2022 SL, the new convertible will be on sale by the latter half of 2021 and will be given the internal designation of R232. Returning to the model’s roots, we expect the SL to be much sportier than the current luxo-barge.
In fact, there may not even be a Mercedes-Benz SL, only a Mercedes-AMG SL. This assumption is bolstered by the fact that the next SL will be entirely designed by Mercedes’ in-house hot rod division, AMG. In fact, the R232 will be built on the next-generation AMG GT platform.
Spy shots indicate that the new SL will lose its now-traditional folding hardtop and instead go with a canvas roof. Seems as if the SL will grow from a two-seater to something like a 2+2 (not quite a four-seater, but plenty of duffel bag space behind the front seats), not only to differentiate it from the GT (a problem the current two-passenger car has vis-à-vis the current two-passenger GT) but also to fill the hole left in the lineup by the retired four-passenger S-Class Cab.
Powertrain choices will be many, starting with a RWD car (SL 43) perhaps powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. (We doubt Mercedes would port its archaic 3.0-liter V-6 to a 2022 model year product, though stranger things have happened.) Next would be an AWD model (SL 53 4Matic+) motivated by the brand’s M256 48-volt mild hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, plus something called the SL 73e 4Matic+.
Breaking down that last moniker, the 73e refers to a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 in conjunction with a hybrid motor good for (probably) more than 800 horsepower, whereas 4Matic+ means all-wheel drive with Drift mode. There will also, of course, be an SL 63 4Matic+, as well as something called SL 55 S 4Matic+. We’re assuming that the SL 55 S will be a high-output version of the M256, i.e. an AMG-tuned inline-six. It’s looking like only the base SL 43 will be RWD-only.
You might expect every SL to use a version of Mercedes’ nine-speed automatic transmission. However, the current AMG GT uses a dual-clutch transaxle. We have to imagine that in order to keep up with the Joneses (Porsche 911, mid-engine Corvette), the GT will retain its dual-clutch and transaxle.
Therefore, it makes sense that the next SL will feature a dual-clutch transmission mounted behind the driver. But that would mean AWD SLs would need a second, long driveshaft returning from the transmission to power the front wheels, Nissan GT-R style. We think not.
Could the SL have an automatic while the GT retains its dual-clutch transaxle? Maybe, but super doubtful, as that’s overstretching a platform. AMG boss Tobias Moers has said that the SL is returning to its sporty roots, so maybe a dual-clutch transaxle for the rear wheels and the front wheels are powered by electricity?
Obviously, we have much to learn about the new Mercedes-Benz SL, including its price. But $100,000 seems like a logical place to start.

The Future of Jaguar and Land Rover: Here’s What to Expect
Everyone is going electric, but given the high costs associated with developing EVs, it’s little surprise luxury brands now lead the mainstream push. Tesla (and to a lesser extent, Nissan) got the ball rolling, Mercedes-Benz created its EQ brand, the VW Group introduced the Audi E-Tron and Porsche Taycan, Ford says the Lincoln brand will lead its EV efforts, and General Motors has appointed Cadillac to lead on its side. But what about a company like Jaguar Land Rover, a much smaller automaker that consists of two luxury brands still wed to big, growling gasoline and diesel engines? We talked to Joe Eberhardt, president and CEO of Jaguar Land Rover North America, about the automaker’s plans when it comes to electrification.
The All-New, All-Electric Jaguar XJ Should Break Cover This Year
Jaguar is preparing to introduce the next generation of its flagship sedan: the XJ, which we expect to see this year before it becomes available in 2021. Unlike the gas-fired previous-gen version shown above, the new car will exclusively have an electric powertrain. It will use JLR’s MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) platform slated to underpin a wide swath of new vehicles in the years to come. “It’s a different interpretation of a sedan, but it’s a sedan,” Eberhardt said of the XJ. While the MLA was designed with the flexibility to produce vehicles with gasoline and diesel engines, mild hybrids (48-volt system), plug-in hybrids, and battery electric vehicles, Eberhardt said there are no plans to give the XJ a combustion engine. “The XJ is fully electric but there will be other models where we will have a combination of engine [options],” he said.
In June 2019, JLR said it was investing $1.15 billion at its Solihull and Castle Bromwich (which will make the XJ) plants to make vehicles on the MLA platform with an assortment of powertrains. Eberhardt said the ultimate goal is not necessarily to be a pure EV brand. “In my professional lifetime, we won’t be a full electric. Our stated goal is that every new Jaguar or Land Rover product that is launched will have at least one form of electrified powerplant. The important element is being every new car.”
Jaguar J-Pace in Development?
One of those new cars is expected to be the long-rumored Jaguar J-Pace electric crossover, which would serve as a crossover SUV companion to the XJ. Eberhardt would not comment on it. Autocar in the U.K. reports an electric Land Rover nicknamed the “Road Rover” is also in the works. All three electric vehicles could be on sale by the end of 2021. And the J-Pace and “Road Rover” could be offered as hybrids, as well.
The Jaguar I-Pace, introduced in 2018, is Jaguar’s first electric vehicle and its construction is contracted through Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. It isn’t meeting sales expectations—it sold less than 2,600 units in the U.S. last year—but if there is a second generation, it could also move to the MLA platform and assembly could be brought in-house to either of the retooled U.K. plants.
When it comes to electrification, JLR does not want to differentiate by brand, say, by making Jaguar the electric-vehicle poster child while Land Rover is the capable, combustion-engine SUV brand. The degree of electrification will be on a model-by-model basis. “I don’t think there’s one size fits all,” says Eberhardt. It will depend on the vehicle, platform and even the infrastructure. “Clearly on a large SUV, a full battery-electric vehicle is more difficult. If you look at the geometry, if you look at the weight, if you look at some of the off-road capabilities, it’s not as easy. So, there’s different powertrains that fit different applications. Our goal will be to find the best possible solutions for customers in each of those segments. That’s why we are not all eggs in one basket but try to be selective and build a combination that works for the customer.” The expectation is Range Rover and Ranger Rover Sport models will lean more to being plug-in hybrids or feature 48-volt mild hybrid systems, with some halo electric models. Eberhardt would not comment on a high-performance electrified powertrain from JLR for a future SVR. “Couldn’t announce it or confirm it,” he says.
Diesels
JLR will also continue to offer diesel engines for the foreseeable future. “We still offer diesels in Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Discovery,” Eberhardt said. “They do have some significant and fundamental benefits in terms of range, fuel economy, and torque for towing. It remains to be seen what the long-term future is for diesels. We have a good take rate. Customers are very happy with it. It is increasingly difficult and challenging, though, given the entire push back on the industry. As far as we’re concerned, it’s a good powertrain to have but whether it will be there in perpetuity remains to be seen.” In other words, JLR’s diesel V-8, as well as its gasoline V-8 and the new supercharged I-6 Ingenium engine, are not going away anytime soon.
Waymo Autonomous Vehicles
For most automakers, electric vehicles go hand in hand with autonomous capability. In the case of JLR, the automaker is working with Waymo and signed a contract to supply up to 20,000 electric I-Paces for Waymo’s autonomous commercial ride-hailing service. “We have the contract to supply a minimum of 9,000 vehicles. We haven’t started delivering them,” Eberhardt said last month. So far Waymo has been working with Jaguar prototypes. “We are in constant discussions with them. The final details are not ready to be announced, but clearly that’s an ongoing [partnership].”
Waymo is outfitting the I-Pace with fifth-generation technology that includes multiple lidar sensors including one on the roof and one on each corner of the vehicle for a full 360-degree view of the world. Eberhardt would not say if JLR benefits from the technology Waymo is testing, saying again that discussions are ongoing. And JLR is working on autonomous-vehicle technology of its own. “We have prototypes running in the U.K. as part of some engineering partnerships with universities, University of Warwick in particular. We’re part of some government-funded initiatives in the U.K.”

The car is expected to debut at the 2019 Frankfurt auto show and should be in showrooms in 2020 as a 2021 model. From earlier test mules, we know the general size and proportions will match up with the current model but there will be a slightly wider track and it also looks like the hood will be lower and longer. This should give the car an impressive stance. The current Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the W222, was introduced for 2014 and immediately rocketed to the top of the sales chart. The six-figure sedan racked up more than 100,000 sales in its first year and that was before the arrival of additional body styles such as the two-door cars and extra-long Maybach and Pullman. It’s clear the new S-Class has some big shoes to fill. Luckily for it, it will adopt a new platform, in this case Mercedes’ MRA design for rear-wheel-drive cars. The current S-Class rides on an updated version of its predecessor’s architecture. It’s hard to gauge what Mercedes has in store for the new S-Class this early out. The current model just received its mid-cycle update for 2018 so understandably Mercedes is shy to talk about the next one. Baldauf/SB-Medien Every powertrain will be electrified, either with mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid technology, and most engines will either be a 3.0-liter inline-6 or 4.0-liter V-8. It’s not clear if there will be an electric version as Mercedes is working on a large electric sedan under the EQ sub-brand. But getting back to the new S-Class, there will also be much more advanced self-driving systems, including perhaps a Level 3 system. This is where the car can handle its own in certain situations, leaving the driver free to do other things. However, the driver will need to be ready to take back control at a moment’s notice. Audi has already introduced such a system in its latest A8, though it isn’t available in the U.S. due to a lack of regulations. A shot of the interior also suggests that Mercedes may ditch the current dual-screen digital dash of the current S-Class in favor of a single-screen unit for the new model. 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class spy shots – Image via S. However, there’s a good chance the current S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet will be phased out. A roomier next-generation SL-Class with 2+2 seating is expected to fill the void. 2019 Honda CR-V EX-L FWD: Why I’d Buy It – Alex Nishimoto

I’ve been putting off buying a new car for more than half my life. I learned to dread the process as a kid after being trapped at a dealership for eight hours while my parents haggled for their new wheels. As a result of that experience, I’ve stuck to private-sale used cars my entire adult life. But as you can imagine, my priorities changed when my first kid was born a year ago.
Prior to my son’s arrival in May 2018, I was your average early-millennial car nerd. If you looked through my Craigslist search history, you’d see an odd mix of old-car keywords: BMW E36 M3 sedan, Jaguar XJ Series I, Triumph Spitfire, Saab 900 Turbo, Nissan 300ZX Z32, etc. To a certain group of enthusiasts, those are all undeniably cool cars, but they have something else in common—they’re all less than ideal for transporting a baby. (OK, maybe the four-door M3 could squeak by in that role.) As a married man in my mid-30s with a house, a reasonable amount of disposable income, and, crucially, access to press cars thanks to this job, I could have made one of the above options work as a second vehicle/ongoing project. But with my son now in the picture and my wife’s 2006 Acura TSX approaching 150,000 miles, any questionable car-buying decisions would have to wait until my midlife crisis.
With my plans to pick up a weekend car foiled, what would I buy now? To accommodate our new addition, it would need to have four doors and a back seat spacious enough to fit an infant car seat (and, eventually, a larger convertible car seat). A large cargo area would be great to have, as we’ll be lugging around bulky items like his stroller and Pack ’n Play. And because this vehicle will be transporting our most precious cargo, excellent safety ratings are a must. It also needs to be dead reliable, and for my own peace of mind that meant buying new. Realizing that, I knew I had to get over my dealership phobia.
With a budget of about $30,000, we started looking at new cars that met the above criteria. My wife, Courtney, would be the one driving it most, and she preferred something with similar dimensions to her TSX. At 183.3 inches long and 69.4 inches wide, the first-gen TSX is about the same length as most compact crossovers, so going with one of those she would just need to get used to the extra width and, obviously, the increased height. With that, we narrowed our search to the compact crossover class and quickly arrived at a top two: the Subaru Forester and Honda CR-V.
Both are solid choices that earn top marks in safety, with the 2019 CR-V named an IIHS Top Safety Pick and the 2019 Forester a Top Safety Pick+. Both also have roomy interiors and good-sized cargo areas. But ultimately, the decision came down to available engines. The 2019 Subaru Forester is offered with just one engine choice, a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated flat-four that makes 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. That might not sound that far off from the 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of the CR-V’s available 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4, but the difference in how they drive is night and day. The Forester felt sluggish off the line and in traffic, requiring deliberate and ample throttle application to pass. The 1.5-liter turbo in the CR-V, on the other hand, is lively and responsive. Although the 1.5T CR-V and TSX deliver power differently, Courtney thought they felt similar enough that she wouldn’t need to make big adjustments to her driving style.
Now that we had settled on the CR-V, the question was which one to get. We had already ruled out the base LX trim because we wanted the turbo engine, as well as features like Apple CarPlay and heated seats, which you can’t get with the LX. We reasoned that leather upholstery would be more baby-friendly than cloth, as liquid spills would be easier to clean up. Leather is standard on EX-L and the top-trim Touring model. The latter comes with features we could probably live without. Onboard navigation isn’t necessary because we can run Google Maps on CarPlay, and although the hands-free power liftgate could be useful, Courtney has gotten by with just a remote-opening trunk up until now.
The EX-L trim was our Goldilocks model (a Touring is shown above), but we still had one decision left: front- or all-wheel drive? We don’t really need the extra traction living in Southern California, and given Courtney’s 40-mile roundtrip commute, the 1-mpg advantage of the front-drive model would add up over time. All-wheel drive might come in handy if we ever took a trip to the mountains to see snow, or maybe on a camping trip involving some light dirt trails. But even with all-wheel drive, I wouldn’t be comfortable taking the CR-V too far off the beaten path. For that, I could always choose a legit four-wheeler as my midlife crisis car.
Knowing the exact model we wanted, we headed to the dealership and bought a brand-new 2019 Honda CR-V EX-L FWD in Modern Steel Metallic. And it only took five hours this time. Here’s hoping my son is too young to develop the same scars I did.
