#Jaehaera targaryen

i always wonder who the Jaehaera's adult version would have married if the Dance of the Dragons hadn't happened and no one had died. she probably would have been betrothed to Jaehaerys anyway, but if we think about it... she would have many options for betrothals in her own family (Jaehaerys, Maelor, Joffrey, Aegon III and Viserys II...)

and i see these two as the adult versions of Jaehaera Targaryen and Joffrey Velaryon, some kinda of AU/canon divergence

So this little AU comes to you dear scroller courtesy of me getting jumpscared by a Jaehaera vs Daenaera post during what was supposed to be my post-work relaxation scroll. Fair warning the rest of this post will be me ranting about the J vs D "discourse" side of this fandom, feel free to scroll on by if you're not a fan of mad ramblings.

I remember a time before HOTD was ever a twinkle in Rayan Condal's eye, a time when Fire and Blood had just come out and the main topics of discussion regarding Jaehaera and Daenaera were the following 1) Jaehaera's death is unnecessarily cruel and brutal and 2) the language used to describe Daenaera is weird and uncomfortable. And that was mostly it due to the style in which Fire and Blood was written in (an in universe history book) and the fact that the girls were minor characters (yes they both have thematic significance but alas they take up so little page time). So imagine my shock and surprise when I found out that the HOTD fandom was having heated "debates" about Jaehaera and Daenaera, now take that shock and surprise and double it for when I found out that these "debates" weren't about the thematic significance of these girls, or possible interesting parallels they have to other in universe characters or what they could symbolize in the greater story of the Targ dynasty/asoiaf generally or even about expanding or extrapolating on the sparse characterization these girls have in the text no, no, no, no these people were so heatedly "debating" which one of these children would ultimately have been a better wife for Aegon III. Yup all of this drama, debate and insult hiring in the fandom is because of a ship war, and not just any kind of ship war but the kind of 11 year olds have when they get into their first online fandom. This is only made worse (more embarrassing) when you realize that a majority of people involved in and spearheading this ship war are actually fully grown adults. The HOTD fandom truly never ceases to amaze me.

alicent being forced to choose between saving aegon or saving helaena in the exact same way that helaena was forced to choose between saving jaehaerys or saving jaehaera, and making the exact same choice helaena did to save her daughter, because the truth is that there is no saving her son no matter what she tries to do... the writers ate this one lil thing because the parallels are paralleling

While I still don’t think it was done perfectly, the more I think about it, the more I think Blood & Cheese was done well. With no Maelor, the change to “which one is the boy” makes sense, and even Helaena offering up her necklace, which I really didn’t like at first, makes much more sense now that I think about it. Cheese(?)’s “does she look like a fucking prince to you” line and all their talk of sons makes it clear to Helaena that offering herself up is not going to do any good, and doing so might risk making them angry and just make them kill both children. So then of course she offers up her necklace, they have to be doing this for money and it’s the only thing that might appeal to them. Then, once they make it clear both kids are dying if she doesn’t tell them which one is Jaehaerys, she points to him. They know she’s telling the truth because she looks so guilty and horrified but she has no choice, at this point she can only save Jaehaera. Even her running out makes sense, being unable to watch the fate her son has been doomed to, saving who she can save and wandering around, not even being phased by Alicent and Criston because she’s so guilt-ridden and so traumatized and so stunned and so out of it that all she can do is collapse to the floor and say “they killed the boy.” Not even Jaehaerys’ name, they broke her so thoroughly that she can only speak like them. Okay maybe it was actually done well.

i love how aegon was like "i'm gonna break the generational cycle of my dad ignoring me by being the best dad to jaehaerys ever" and instead he actually just continued viserys's original generational cycle of ignoring daughters in favors of sons and now one day aegon's going to look at jaehaera when she's the only thing he has left and maybe then he will finally understand why viserys treated rhaenyra with such guilt
