Gazetteer of Laran Swamps

As mentioned previously, this month's Hexplore topic will be taking place in a swampy Louisiana analogue. This place is known as Laran Swamps, and it sits within a much larger continent known as The Carrow. Only humans live here, and all the groups share a common language.

Factions of Note

Carrowian Regulators - official military force of the Carrowian Government, called The Gate, and it's basically a cavalry cowboy force.

Independent Laran Force (ILF) - a group of anti-government anarchists who claim they are fighting to free the swamps from its oppressors, but are just as problematic and corrupt as The Gate.

Conlan Pirates - a group of "land pirates" who are raiders along the western edges of the swamps.

The Sight - its a branch of Druidism developed by the Carrowian ruling elite, notably the Romanette Family. Sight users are called Seers, and although an individual must have a license to do it/learn it, there's obviously outlaw Seers. Each Regiment of Regulators has a Seer.

The Old Ways - Traditional Wiccan-esque witches who commune with nature through rituals and sacrifices and cast runes. The Old Ways is outlawed, and is most common among hermits, common people, and the pirates.

Important Events

Instead of making separate posts for each random event I rolled up a bunch of events and will plug them in here.

A few days prior to the start of the sandbox adventure in the late middle of the week, a massive earthquake destroyed a tract of land to the southwest (outside of the bounds of the sandbox). News of the disaster was delivered by a local gossiper Jacques LeFleur.

Days 1 to 3 - Some sort of monster or supernatural entity escaped containment in a dungeon about a day's walk to the north (Hex 8). A posse went to deal with it but was unsuccessful. Everyone died except one, who managed to make it back to town to and alert people that the threat is still active.

Days 7 to 14 - Bad weather to the northeast (just outside the bounds of the sandbox) arrived suddenly and remained curiously stationary; several people die.

Days 9 to 15 - Another bout of unusual weather, not deadly but definitely out of season, occurs to the south, just outside the sandbox. There is talk that witches were hired to cause this weather.

Days 11 to 15 - A feud erupts between members of The Sight and The Old Ways. It escalates until a member of The Sight is killed, and the Seers regroup to assess the next steps.

Days 13 to 18 - A series of minor earthquakes appears, with multiple aftershocks each day that result in relatively minor property damage to hexes 13,14,15, and 25.

Days 20 to 27 - One of the elderly Carrowian landed gentry is attacked in a town to the southeast, outside the sandbox. The Carrowian elite are convinced that it is an attack by the ILF or possibly pirates, while the commoners insist it was a result of monsters or wildlife. Street crime and other violence happen twice as often during this week of trouble.

Days 23 to 28 - A rodeo occurs in Hex 28, setting up for the first three days, the rodeo happening on the 26th and 27th, and breaking down on the last day. It is marred by allegations of cheating.

Days 28 to 33 - The settlement in Hex 6 requests an emergency influx of food after an extremist took to burning the settlement's stores.
