Gran Turismo (12A): Leveraging Brian Eno-Rage to beat the Grand Pricks.
#onemannsmovies review of "Gran Turismo" (2023). #GranTurismo. Old-fashioned storytelling with fab and exciting racing scenes. 4/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Gran Turismo” (2023). “Grand Prix”; “Le Mans”; “Rush“; “Le Mans ’66” (aka “Ford v Ferrari”). There have been some cracking films based around the sport of motor-racing. And now Neill Blomkamp has added to that list with “Gran Tursimo”. Amazingly, this is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, now just 30 years old, who acted as one of the stunt drivers in…

Movie #11 of 2024: Arthur the King
So I got one of those AMC movie pass things as a gift, and AMC apparently does a thing where they show a movie that's not quite officially out yet but they don't tell you what it will be ahead of time. It's a mystery!
That's how I ended up watching a CGI dog out act Mark Wahlberg, which isn't surprising and this is definitely not a movie I would ever willingly watch.
In fact, looking at the poster, I'm pretty sure this is the exact same design for that Harrison Ford dog movie that came out in 2020. Did I ever tell you I was the finishing editor on promotional dog food spots for that movie? True exciting Hollywood story.
Uhh what were we talking about again? Oh right, Arthur the King I guess is fine and the dog isn't always CGI, but the facial expressions and noises it makes are definitely all super deep fake generative AI deageing-filter Irishman Al Pacino young face style.
It's only 90 minutes which is and I guess it is kinda cool that it's based on a true story which plays out during the end credits. What are the odds I pull the latest dog movie for mystery cinema? It's dumb and you'll think about your dead dog who died of a rare kidney cancer and almost cry the whole time, which is a very common thing that could happen to anyone watching this cheesy movie and not specifically me.

‘Gran Turismo’ Is a Treat for Extreme-Sport Enthusiasts, But Where Was It Filmed?

‘Gran Turismo’ Is a Treat for Extreme-Sport Enthusiasts, But Where Was It Filmed?
Adding to the list of movie adaptations of video games, Sony Pictures’ Gran Turismo hit the box office last weekend. Based on the true story of a Gran Turismo (GT) player named Jann Mardenborough, this inspiring film tells how Mardenborough went from winning a series of Gran Turismo gaming competitions to becoming a professional race car driver for Nissan Motorsports. The film stars Archie Madekwe as Mardenborough (with the real Mardenborough standing in as his stunt double), as well as David Harbour and Orlando Bloom, and it was filmed in some pretty cool spots.
French cinematographer Jacques Jouffret was hush-hush about filming locations. Even before the film was released, the trailers and teasers from Sony and Michelin had fans guessing which tracks the film crew used in places like Europe and the Middle East over the course of the seven weeks it took to shoot the film. PlayStation Productions’ head producer Carter Swan said they filmed on tracks around the world to make the film feel authentic to race car enthusiasts.
We did some digging to discover where in the world Gran Turismo was filmed. Here’s what we found.
Mild plot spoilers below.
Gran Turismo Outdoor Filming Locations
Cardiff, Wales
The night before Jann is supposed to do a qualification race for GT Academy, he goes out in his hometown to a party with his brothers in his father’s car. He then leads police on a chase after the authorities break up the party. Although there is no confirmation of location, the chase appears to have been filmed in Mardenborough’s hometown of Cardiff in Wales.
Budapest, Hungary
Many scenes for the movie were filmed in Budapest, including scenes at the headquarters of Nissan and GT Academy. Skilled Gran Turismo players are trained at the academy in Budapest on the track in Mogyoród to become real race car drivers. The Hungaroring track is a 4.381 km (2.722 mile) motorsport racetrack and used throughout the film as a part of the GT Academy. In real life, Jann trained at the academy for six weeks for up to six hours a day.
Home to the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, the track at Mogyoród is where Mardenborough goes from simulation racing via video game to real racing.
Nürburgring, Germany
After training at the GT Academy, Mardenborough’s first pro race in the movie occurs at the Nürburgring—a famous racetrack in Nürburg, Germany. The track has changed many times since its first opening in 1927. Today it holds two tracks, a simpler 12.943-mile track and a 15.769-mile track that uses a part of the modern original F1 track.
It’s here that Jann crashes in the Flugpatz corner. The realism in filming makes movie viewers feel like they are in the crowd as Jann’s car hits the barrier and launches into the crowd.
Dubai Autodrome, United Arab Emirates (UAE)
After winning the GT Academy competition, Mardenborough began his actual race career at the Dubai Autodrome in the UAE, and there appears to be footage from this iconic track throughout the film. The 5.390 km (3.349 mile) track provides a beautiful background for competitive racing, including the Dubai 24-Hour endurance race.
Red Bull Ring, Austria
In 2011, a track in Spielberg, Austria was redesigned and opened as the Red Bull Ring. In the trailer for Gran Turismo, you can see Mardenborough racing around a track that circles around a sculpture of a bull. This bull can only be found at one track: the Red Bull Ring. The ring has hosted big races, including MotoGP, Formula 1, and more.
Possible Other Outdoor Movie Locations
Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium
Image by Rudy Carezzevoli Formula 1/Contributor
Fans online wonder whether any race footage was shot at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, located in Stavelot near Spa, Belgium. The Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix is currently held on this 7.004 km (4.352 mile) circuit.
Bathurst, Australia
Although there is no confirmation that filming took place at this location, race enthusiasts believe that some footage may have been filmed at the Bathurst Ring in Australia. The mountain background, buildings, and corners look like they might be from the Mount Panorama Race Circuit. In his real career, Mardenborough raced at this track at the age of 20.
If you’re a race car enthusiast, you’ll enjoy trying to spot which famous face tracks make an appearance in this inspirational film. Even if you’re not a race car enthusiast, Mardenborough is the true definition of a success story, and his story will make you want to reach for your dreams.

Movie Review: Got a "need for speed?" "Gran Turismo"
“Gran Turismo” is a beautiful looking film. Jacques Jouffret photographed it like the slickest car commercial you’ve ever seen, and Austyn Daines and Colby Parker Jr. edited us right into and inside the race cars and the races recreated here. It’s also damned entertaining. Don’t anybody tell you otherwise. The script about plucky “gamer” underdog driving real race cars works, the production…

First Take: Gran Turismo - apparently video games CAN make dreams come true
SYNOPSIS: Based on the unbelievable, inspiring true story of a team of underdogs - a struggling, working-class gamer, a failed former race car driver, and an idealistic motorsport exec - who risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world.
A script that's been in the works for a decade, multiple directors, a studio who have mixed form with the video game film... yes, Sony are pulling the trigger on a movie about 'the ultimate driving simulator' (although us Forza Motorsport loyalists have a thing or two to say about that). And knowing the source material, it's one of the rare times a film gets the 'feel' of a game it is adapting spot on.
youtube
Yes, Neill Blomkamp is an inventive choice to take on a project like this, but what he brings to this is the ability to use VFX to his advantage - which is smart considering how he does the racing sequences, using graphics from the game itself (GT7 for those who are in the know), but ultimately at 2 hours 14 minutes the pacing does feel off at times. It's written by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin, who again, do an admirable job translating the game and this story to film, but it pains me to say that it's just too good to be true at times. Behind the camera we have Jacques Jouffret shooting the action, and rounding it out is a score from Lorne Balfe and Andrew Kawczynski. Technically, this is a fine enough film.
On to the cast, and welcome to the big time Archie Madekwe. He absolutely nails it as Jann Mardenborough (which makes sense as the actual Jann co-produced the film and is his own stunt driver), and supporting him is David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Djimon Hounsou, Maeve Courtier-Lilley and many others. However, one piece of casting feels slightly off, and that is Geri Halliwell (best known to Formula 1 fans as Red Bull boss Christian Horner's wife) and her role as Jann's mum. I can understand how and why they cast her, they need big names to sell a film like this, but with the quality of the rest of this cast it feels like a bit of a weak link.
THE VERDICT
It is far from a perfect film, but Gran Turismo does an admirable job at adapting the Mardenborough story with conviction - albeit with a few major artistic liberties here and there, creating a film that will use the current SAG/WGA situation to explain its success (or more likely lack thereof) once the box office numbers hit.
RATING: 3.5/5

Our Lady of the Grotto, Mellieħa, Malta: The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa is a Marian shrine in the village of Mellieħa in Malta. It was originally constructed in the late 16th century and contains a Byzantine-style fresco, depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary with Christ on her right arm. Tradition has it that the painting was made by St Luke when he was shipwrecked on the island with St Paul. The church expanded several times to accommodate the growing population of the village and the roofed veranda is considered a classic example of 17th century Renaissance architecture. The sanctuary was blessed by St Pope John Paul II during his visit to Malta in May 1990.

Martyrs of the Hulks of Rochefort/Martyrs of La Rochelle – 64 beati: In 1790 the French Revolutionary authorities passed a law requiring priests to swear allegience to the civil constitution, which would effectively remove them from the authority of and allegience to, Rome.
