Imogen Finch has just been through her seventeenth breakup. She saw it coming, so she’s not as crushed as she might be, but with all sixteen of her exes leaving her for other partners, she’s come to believe a prediction her well-intentioned and possibly clairvoyant mother made over twenty years that Imogen would never come first at anything or to anyone. Is her love life failing due to a magical…

September books
The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson. I really liked the focus on the three individuals, which created a narrative to follow the central premises.
Buffalo Flats by Martine Leavitt. My teenage self would have eaten this book up with a spoon, because I read a lot of historical Christian/LDS fiction back then. Adult!Me saw many more flaws with the story and pacing.
The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.  I liked the different mysteries that the book had, although the resolution of the main mystery was a let down. The structure of the book was unique - the flashbacks of events were incorporated into the different cases the protagonist was investigating.
A Well-Trained Wife: My Escape from Christian Patriarchy by Tia Levings. Engrossing, horrifying, and very much not surprising.
The Pairing by Casey McQuinton. I'm starting to think that my love of Red, White, and Royal Blue was a one time win for this author. The premise was supposed to be lightly based on A Room With A View, which I love, and this was not that. Felt pretentious.
Better Living Through Birding by Christian Cooper (audiobook). The little recordings of birds were delightful. It was a lovely memoir (not a birding book although it made me want to go birding), but it felt a little long in places.
Marlow Banks, Redesigned by Jacqueline Firkins. There was a lot that was enjoyable, but I didn't relate to the heroine at all. Also, I thought I understood the difference between a "closed door-fade to black" and an "open door" love scene, but being explicit in the details to just prior to orgasm and then fading away is a new one for me.
The Turner Series by Courtney Milan (3 books: Unveiled, Unclaimed, Unraveled; 1 novella: Unlocked; and 2 short stories: Birthday Gift and Out of the Frying Pan). A friend recommended these books as romance books without toxic masculinity - I thought there was still some throughout the books (some brawls, a lot of temper tantrums), but the men do apologize and work through their feelings. I also feel that I have been completely spoiled by fanfic, where after the love declaration, there is lots of intimate scenes afterwards. And all of these seem to be 1-2 scenes prior to the wedding/HEA and that's it. Overall, I read them in a weekend back to back.
I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons by Peter S. Beagle. You know, I have never read (or watched) The Last Unicorn, so I have no idea how this compares. It was cute and a fast read, but it took until halfway through before there was any plot and the villain wasn't introduced or even hinted at until 3/4th through, so pacing was definitely odd.

Sense and Sensibility, at Arts Club Brings Today's Sensibilities to Jane Austen
On stage at the Arts Club Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, until April 2, 2023, Sense and Sensibility by writer Kate Hamill adds a bit of modern perspective to the Jane Austen classic tale of love, marriage, wits and class. Gossip, intrigue, scandal, impropriety are at the forefront of director Rachel Peake's production, mixed with the typical emotional restraint of Regency England. First greeted by Shizuka Kai's creative set, made up of embroidery hoops highlights the expectations, and burden, imposed upon ladies of English society. Sarah Cantuba, Nyiri Karakas, Amanda Sum, and Janet Gigliotti (l-r) in Sense and Sensibility, 2023: set design by Shizuka Kai; costume design by Jacqueline Firkins; lighting design by Itai Erdal; photo by Moonrider Productions for the Arts Club Theatre Company As the story begins, Costume Designer Jacqueline Firkins wraps the villagers in garments printed with handwritten notes, as their loose tongues catch us up to the plight of the Dashwoods; recently widowed, Mrs Dashwood and her three daughters Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret, who are being put out of their home by the new heir, their half-brother and his snob of a wife. Reflecting today's insatiable appetite for scandal and intrigue, the 'gossips' cleverly appear throughout the play to help move the story along, without them, the play would be even longer than its 2.5 hours. The scene changes are also creatively fast-paced as the company rolls and slides the set furniture along with the performers between locations. The subject of much of the gossips gaze centers upon Elinor and Marianne, played by Nyiri Karakas and Amanda Sum respectively. The only two cast members to not appear as more than one character, Karakas and Sum carry the heavy burden of Elinor and Marianne's emotional and turbulent love lives. Karakas brings the level-headed, propriety expected of elder-sister Elinor, who pines for the love of unavailable Edward Ferrars (Kamyar Pazandeh). Meanwhile Sum's Marianne, a modern thinking girl who cares little for what's expected of her, is an emotional roller-coaster torn between two suitors; the vibrant, and unscrupulous Willoughby (Jay Clift) and staid, honourable Colonel Brandon (Abraham Asto). Aided and abetted though their trials and tribulations; Sarah Cantuba as younger sister Margaret Dashwood, Janet Gigliotti as Mrs Dashwood, as well Andrew McNee as cousin Sir John Middleton, Emma Slipp as his drunken wife, and Nora McLellan as his meddling, mother-in-law Mrs. Jennings. With a cast filled with many actors so skilled at comedy, their delivery and timing keep the play from being weighed down by the lovelorn, balancing laughter along with the wails of heartbreak. While Sense and Sensibility is long, the creative direction and precisely choreographed set changes keep up a quick pace, sure to appeal to those who enjoy a period drama (with some scene-stealing comedy). Sense and Sensibility plays at The Arts Club Theatre Company's Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, 2750 Granville Street, until April 2, 2023. Details and tickets online at artsclub.com

A hardened cynic and a hopeless romantic teach each other about love in this swoony and heartfelt contemporary romance that's perfect for fans of Tweet Cute and The Upside of Falling. Harper works in her mom’s wedding shop, altering dresses for petulant and picky brides who are more focused on hemlines than love. After years of watching squabbles break out over wedding plans, Harper thinks romance is a marketing tool. Nothing more. Her best friend Theo is her opposite. One date and he’s already dreaming of happily ever afters. He also plays the accordion, makes chain mail for Ren Festers, hangs out in a windmill-shaped tree house, cries over rom-coms, and takes his word-of-the-day calendar very seriously. When Theo’s shocked to find himself nursing his umpteenth heartbreak, Harper offers to teach him how not to fall in love. Theo agrees to the lessons, as long as Harper proves she can date without falling in love. As the lessons progress and Theo takes them to heart, Harper has a harder time upholding her end of the bargain. She’s also checking out her window to see if Theo’s home from his latest date yet. She's even watching rom-coms. If she confesses her feelings, she’ll undermine everything she’s taught him. Or was he the one teaching her?

How Not to Fall in Love Fumbles the Friends-to-Lovers Trope
Both main characters in this young adult romance are deeply unlikeable, which ultimately tanks the book.
HMH Books for Young Readers Friends-to-lovers is one of my all-time favorite tropes used in any kind of fiction. An established relationship morphing into something new is a plot I’ll never grow tired of—when it’s done right, at least. There are a few times when I’ll come across a friends-to-lovers story that I don’t enjoy, and that has everything to do with unlikable characters who are difficult…

(via Waiting on Wednesday: Hearts, Strings, and Other Breakable Things)
This book sounds like it is going to be so much fun to read, and I love the summer before college setting. The fact that it is a Jane Austen retelling has me really intrigued as well. I can’t wait to find out how this book ends.
