Joseph's Silver Cup In Benjamin's Sack
Artist: Jacopo Amigoni (Italian, 1685-1752)
Date: circa 1749
Medium: OIl on Canvas
Collection: Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain
Joseph's Silver Cup in Benjamin's Sack
A steward working for Joseph, now the governor of Egypt (Genesis 41:44) has accused 11 men of stealing a valuable silver cup. These men are Joseph's estranged brothers (Genesis 37:24–28), though they don't know it (Genesis 42:7–8). Since none of the men did such a thing, they have denied any wrongdoing (Genesis 44:7–8). They don't realize the steward, himself, placed the cup in Benjamin's sack on Joseph's own order (Genesis 44:1–6). In an act of foolish confidence, the eleven brothers have agreed that if the cup is found in any of their sacks, that man shall become a slave of the Egyptian ruler.

Jacopo Amigoni, 1682-1752
Flora and Zephyr, ca.1730s, oil on canvas, 213.4x147.3 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY Inv. 1985.5
The composition celebrates the end of winter through the union of Flora, Roman goddess of spring, and Zephyr, god of wind. Despite a preponderance of view paintings, Venetian artists specializing in figures—including Amigoni, Sebastiano Ricci, and Giovanni Pellegrini—also achieved international repute and received commissions throughout Europe. Amigoni painted this work in England, where he lived between 1729 and 1739. (MET)
