an angel just lost its wings... (i shaved 😔 sorry for disappointing you, guys, there are no words that could excuse me; it’s too hot here)
but, anywaay, what are your thoughts on body hair and yj? i know shauna goes craaazy with someone who has a bush (i’m looking at you too, van 👀). what are your hc’s about it?
Ur my biggest fan fr I love youuuu👺👺👺
Um shauna for sure has INSANE body hair. that armpit and leg hair is NO JOKE and she for sure has a big patch of hair above her genitalia and she’s got a long and thick happy trail too.
misty’s got minimal body hair tbh. her bush isn’t that big and she’s barely got hair on her arms or legs or armpits. not because she shaves. she just naturally has less.
nat for sure lets her bush grow out. it’s not as big as shauna’s but it’s definitely medium length. nat doesn’t have much hair on her legs and arms, but she’s definitely got a happy trail and a decent amount of hair on her pits.
taissa’s mostly got body hair on her legs, not so much her arms but maybe a bit on her pits. she’s got a happy trail but it’s not a strong one tho her bush is almost as big as shauna’s.
lottie shaves a lot. she’s got body hair that grows but she keeps a lot of it in check and tends to shave her armpits and legs and her bush often. the only place where she’s got quite a bit is her arms because the thought of shaving her arms sounds ridiculous to even her.
van competes well with shauna in terms of body hair. van’s got a big ass bush, lets it grow on her armpits and legs and legs. she’s got no shame and thinks it helps her look more butch regardless.
jackie doesn’t grow much body hair, but when she does, she’s quick to shave it. she shaves her pits and legs and even shaves her arms. she of course shaves her pubic hair when it grows but she kind of only does it for Jeff sadly because our girl is still in her comphet era and thinks she has to appease him.

Her Triumphant Return
(Part 10 of The New Goddess - Previous: Surrender)
The king’s palace leaves much to be desired. The moment I step foot inside, the first thing I notice is how poorly lit it is compared to mine. Dim and drab and dull, this is what passes for opulence, I guess, anywhere that lacks the benefit of Goddess’s touch.
And that’s why we’re here, isn’t it? We will fix this world.
Velle stands at my side, dressed for the occasion to resemble the sorceress she once was. Not that it took any prodding, really. Given the choice, she gravitates toward her old fashion sense on her own.
I’m sad that I had to fudge the truth a bit, but if a small lie can prevent those awful headaches of hers, I can accept the burden. She believes Goddess has enveloped her in a glamour, making everyone misremember her as the evil sorceress that I, the king’s daughter, quested to stop with the aid of my faithful and loyal friend, Knight Jackdaw.
Of course the truth is that, of the three of us, Velle is the only one anyone perceives accurately.
We kneel before the king’s throne as he offers his formal greeting.
“At last, my daughter returns. Our kingdom’s beloved princess…” his words trail off, momentarily lost within the glamour, knowing he is expected to recognize me but struggling to conjure a name.
“That’s right. I, Princess Canina Rosadeus Lillian Ruten, have returned with good news for the kingdom. Jackdaw and I have captured the Sorceress Velle and stripped her of her magic.” The amulet hanging around my neck bears Her symbol—the eye in the linked rings—and it sparkles as it exerts its influence. It exactly matches those worn by Velle and Jackie, each kissed with holy blessings.
“Princess Canina, yes.” The amulet does what it’s meant to, asserting our modified history in the king’s memories. “Though I forbade you from leaving the palace on this quest, I cannot deny your courage, and I choose to celebrate your accomplishments rather than dole out punishment.”
The king casts his eyes on Velle, and his expression darkens. “You, however. Velle. Enemy of the royal family. Enemy of all Rutennia. I never wished to see your face again.” My woman remains kneeling with her eyes meekly averted, as she knows she must. “That my daughter wishes to keep you as a trophy, I accept only because I know you must find that more humiliating than prison and therefore a better punishment than execution. However, if I see any sign of you resisting your place beneath my daughter, or your magic returning to you, my lenience will end and you will be put down like a dog. Is this understood?”
“Yes, Your Majesty. I hear you, and I vow to obey Her Highness in all things.”
The king responds with a snort. “Acceptable. I do not know how you’ve done it, Canina, but Velle does appear more docile than I’ve ever known her to be.”
“I would be happy to share the story of how we found and won the blessings of the Living Goddess, father. With Her, taming Velle is the least of what we can accomplish. I believe She will help us heal the scars of the rebellion and bring about a new era of prosperity.”
“A living goddess, you say. Well, I grant that you have earned the right to try to sell me on this idea. Not now, however. You should rest, and I have more important matters to attend to. We will speak more at a later date.”
Velle handles her role as my prisoner with skill and grace, meekly following me as the royal servants guide us to the princess’s chambers. Jackie’s uncharacteristic silence through our little performance has me worried, though. When we arrive, I dismiss the servants so that we can have our privacy.
“Hey.” I knock on its armor. “How are you holding up?”
“Who, me? Just fine. Better than fine! I am going to kill everyone in this palace and then myself if I don’t get out of this cage immediately, but other than that, this is basically a vacation for me.”
“Aw, no… I was afraid of that.” I move swiftly to attack the straps and start peeling the armor away. “C’mon, Velle, help me out here.”
She has far less experience with armor than I do, but an extra pair of hands is always welcome for a task like this. I’m just glad that I’m better at handling more of my own memories these days, so we can make this process as quick as possible.
Soon my dear friend is once again able to stretch all its limbs. It blinks open its six other eyes and yawns wide with its whole mouth. “Okay, whew, crisis averted. I’ll probably only kill one or two of the lords or ladies and maybe the king if I’m still hungry afterward.”
I put on my “oh no you don’t” face, raising my eyebrows and tightening my mouth into a thin line.
“Okay! Okay! The king lives.”
“Thank you.”
Velle chimes in. “My dear, as satisfying as it may be, picking off high profile members of the court shortly after we arrive seems like a good way to complicate things unnecessarily.”
Jackie groans in dismay, but she’s right of course. “Yeah, maybe stick to eating people who won’t be missed. Or, you know, regular food… Don’t give me that look, Jay-jay! You won’t have to spend all your time cramped in that armor. You can make some sacrifices like the rest of us.” Still I have such trouble saying no when it looks at me with those big sad eyes. “But… I guess on days like today when you do have to stuff yourself into that thing, you can have one or two people.”
Jackie beams in happiness. “Alright, I’ll take that and run with it before you have a chance to change your mind. Bye-bye!”
In a flash, it skitters out the window. I lean outside to shout after my favorite monster, “remember, nobody important!”
“I’m sure it’ll behave, Nina.” Velle rubs my back in soothing circles. “That thing loves you almost half as much as I do.”
I turn and plant a kiss on her beautiful face. “And that’s almost half as much as I love Nina. I’m sure you’re right as always.”
---
The wardrobe disappoints, even by the standards I thought I lowered enough. Such a meager selection of dresses, all dreadfully tasteful and conservative. If I have to be stuck in such stuffy clothes for too long, the Jackie strategy of murdering everyone will start to sound a little too appealing.
The servants, too. They are well dressed, I suppose, in clothes fine enough to be pleasant on the eyes without overshadowing the wardrobe of the princess, but none of this matches the pure elegance of the maid uniforms of my palace. Did Goddess invent those Herself? I should give thanks for that as well. These here are all so very disappointing.
I kiss my amulet and put my hand on the little statue on my makeshift bedroom altar. “Goddess, give me strength to spread Your message.”
Our first challenge is convincing “father” to grant my Velle a little more autonomy. She can’t accomplish much if she is expected to remain within my sight at all times, after all. It’s just a matter of proving how well-trained she is, and it turns out to be quite persuasive when I have her demonstrate how good she is at tea time in front of the king and his inner circle. My Velle finishes the whole pot by herself and gives the audience a smile and a pretty curtsy while they stare in aghast horror.
“Have you ever seen someone so well domesticated? Are any of your servants so loyal?”
Even the king acknowledges that this Velle has become someone else entirely and agrees “on a provisional basis” to allow her the same autonomy as other servants of the house. I maintain enough self control to wait until we’re alone before tongue-fucking the taste out of her mouth.
---
“Father” is insufferable. Despite what he said at my arrival, he refuses to listen to my proselytizing. He is unmoved by my tales of Her miracles, even when She is the reason Velle listens to me at all. My demands to build an official shrine within the palace are ignored. The only topic he wants to speak to me about is arranging a political marriage and producing a proper heir.
I am grateful to Velle for her tireless work among the servants. Increasingly I see them bearing hand-crafted symbols of the eye-in-linked-rings, flashing the icon where I can see it and giving me a conspiratorial nod as they pass by. I hear their murmurs, thanking “High Priestess Velle of the Living Goddess” and referring to me with awe as “The Chosen.”
Occasionally someone within the palace proves themselves overly hostile about the idea of worshipping Goddess, and Velle carves up a “Jackie treat” for our monster to enjoy. She seems so proud of herself too for bringing a meal it genuinely enjoys. Ah, I never thought I’d see the day that the two of them would get along so well!
It takes time, but we continue making progress sending our invisible tendrils through the royal palace. However obstinate the king proves to be, not all the noble houses are as unreasonable as he is. Plenty of people are desperate for something to believe in, and the idea of a Living Goddess in the world appeals to many. I seek the ear of the nobles, who are often surprised to discover that Goddess has many adherents among their servants already, and this news bolsters their resolve to spread the faith.
I only permit members of the faith to serve me, and I reward those who are most willing to demonstrate their loyalty by giving them the most coveted positions close to me. One earns her place by organizing other servants to build a shrine in secret, against the king’s explicit orders. Another earns a place when they nearly die stopping a knight from reporting the illicit shrine. A third is honored for poisoning her lord after learning he planned to lead a campaign against our “cult.”
The first time I visit the palace’s secret shrine, the beauty brings me to tears. Truly it is no less fine than the one at home, after all, how can a place of worship crafted by loving hands not be perfect just the way it is? I grant a small gathering of faithful the blessing of watching me invoke Goddess for the miracle of bestowing the shrine with a statue in Her likeness. It is a flawless reproduction of the one I know, and the congregation buzzes with excitement that their faith is so rewarded.
Our influence grows by the day, and soon even Jackie is welcomed in its true form by those initiated into the deepest mysteries of our faith.
“Be not afraid,” High Priestess Velle assures them. “This blessed creature is a servant of the Living Goddess and will protect you from retribution for acts carried out in Her name. Go forth and spread the truth of Her divinity, and you will come to no harm.”
---
Something has gone very wrong.
“I don’t understand. Did we anger the Living Goddess? What does this mean?”
I stare in horror at the statue of Goddess, at a loss for words. Grotesque fleshy vines coil all around it, sinking tendrils inside and pulsing horribly. I’ve never seen anything like this before. Goddess didn’t tell me anything. I do my best to compose myself so I don’t scare anyone.
“Fetch me the High Priestess and the Angel if you see it. We must commune with Her together.”
I pray for an answer and hear nothing. I pray for a miracle to stop this, and there is no response. I feel like the floor has suddenly vanished from under my feet, sending me into free fall. Goddess? Where are you?
I’ve never been so scared.
Velle and Jackie arrive hand-in-hand and stop dead in their tracks behind me.
“What the f—“
“She is sick.”
All eyes turn to Velle, the only one who seems to have any idea what’s happening, and we wait for her to continue.
She exhales. “I had a feeling. Jay, you… see Her when you die, yes? What do you remember?”
“Tears,” Jackie shakes its head. “Something about abyssal tears? The Goddess was seeking the power of another dead god.”
My Velle’s mouth moves, voicelessly repeating “dead god” in confusion. I wish she had her memories back already; we could really use a sorceress right about now. Goddess just didn’t think Velle was ready yet.
“Give me the 30-second summary. Quickly.”
I see it in her eyes, headache blooming from merely mentioning dead gods in front of her. If she’s willing to try enduring the pain for Goddess, I should do my part. “Goddess ascended from mortality by claiming the blood of a dead god. Since then, She’s been consuming other dead gods too.”
A scream rips through Velle’s throat as she drops to her knees. Through gritted teeth she hisses “keep going!”
“This is number four,” Jackie adds. “Last time She struggled to digest it. I thought She’d evolved beyond having that problem again, but…”
“She didn’t.” Velle gasps. “It’s too much for Her, isn’t it?”
Goddess never told me She struggled to digest the last one. Nothing is supposed to be too much for Her. This is too much to bear. Goddess! You have to stop!
“I need to touch the statue.”
Jackie cradles her in four arms and brings my dear Velle within arm’s reach of our blighted idol. She reaches out and grabs hold of one of the pulsing vine-things, her face contorted with agony while she pushes herself onward.
“What do you feel?”
“I don’t… know…”
“Can we do anything?”
“I don’t know!“
With that strangled cry on her lips, Velle passes out.
---
“Did you know that the king worships one of the old gods?”
My Velle is still asleep, her dreams apparently troubled, tossing and turning while I sit at her side and hold her hand. I look up at the messenger with tired eyes. “Where did you hear this?”
He hands me a package. “Stolen from his private library. There’s some letters in there, correspondence with some old god cultists, and, uh… references to a secret passage down in the royal catacombs.”
I sigh. “Is this relevant right now?”
The man fidgets, suddenly nervous about failing Goddess’s Chosen. “I just thought you might like some insight into why he resists the Living Goddess. Also…” his words pick up speed with embarrassment, “I dunno. The boy who stole it, his name is Caleb by the way, good kid, really pious, please don’t get mad at him, he said it was divine inspiration that told him you needed it, and I didn’t know what to say to that, I mean, I don’t hear voices or nothin’, but I definitely don’t wanna get in the way of that divine godly stuff, so I said I’d deliver it to you, and maybe you could decide if that relic is important or not, and if it’s not then you can blame me, but don’t blame the kid, he’s just doin’ his best, and…”
Without warning, Velle jerks upright as if awakened by the man’s words. “A relic? Give me those.”
The poor guy flicks his eyes back and forth between the two of us, and with a nod I invite him to hand the package to Velle. He does and promptly flees the room in reverse, bowing to us the whole time.
“Are you sure you’re okay looking at that stuff? I’m worried about you getting another of those headaches.”
“Hm? It’s fine, don’t worry.” Velle ignores my concern, pouring over the contents of the package like a woman possessed, a look in her eyes I don’t recognize as she mutters to herself the whole time. Looking up at me with an unsettling expression, she barks, “paper, ink, quickly!”
I get her to a desk with the writing implements she demands, and soon she’s scribbling notes furiously. “No time, there’s no time. Not a chance in hell he won’t notice this missing. If we’re lucky, he’s occupied, and maybe we can beat him there.” I don’t know if she’s speaking to me or to herself, but I stay out of her way until she finishes, snatching up her notes and bolting to the door.
I follow her down through the passageways of the palace. I have not learned so much of the lower levels as she seems to have, but as I follow her I feel a sinking feeling in my gut telling me this isn’t my Velle any longer.
By torchlight we make our way through the royal catacombs dug beneath all other levels of the palace. The woman who looks so much like mine finds a hidden switch and reveals a path still deeper. We descend a staircase that looks far less worn than its age would suggest, and before long we arrive at a room illuminated by its own unnatural emerald light.
The king is already there.
“I don’t know how you contrived this scheme, Velle, but you truly had me fooled. I always thought your ego precluded debasing yourself for the sake of even a plan like this.” He turns to face us, and I see the same emerald glow in his eyes. “And my false daughter. Now I have the vision to pierce through your glamour. Tell me, what happened to Natalia and that boy Wolfgang? What is your plan for them?”
“Every scheme and every Plan I ever made has crumbled into dust, Alexander. I’m playing it by ear now.” Velle’s voice is as cold as it was during that fateful confrontation so long ago. It makes me shiver. “Wolfgang is dead. Natalia is dying, and one way or another both you and your kingdom will not be far behind.”
“No bitch like you is going to end my line.” The king bares his teeth in a snarl. “You have no idea the power that lurks down here. The ancient signet ring of Lord Turasz, God of the Waking Nightmare, rests in this very tomb.”
He gestures behind him at a skeletal hand bearing a shining emerald ring. “It is heresy to access its power, but once you tripped Lange’s wards on that book, well, better me than you, I think.”
“Velle,” I’m at a complete loss. Everything is going wrong. “What are you—?”
“Learning from past mistakes,” she says, holding out her hand.
Without transition, the signet ring rests in her palm.

lottienat, taivan and jackieshauna for the ship thing
Lottienat
I love an on the surface opposites attract cynical x hopeful realist vs (albeit extreme) idealist ship but where they actually have a bit more in common than you’d expect. Ticks certain boxes in that
Nat is a character who to me, is so often wound up and tasked with the provider/protector role or when she’s not and she does accept help it’s removed help like what Tai gives her, I like the aspect of even when Lottie gets on her nerves she can put Nat at ease enough to be taken care of like in the 2x05 scene and generally in their adult timeline scenes
Lottie can really benefit from someone pragmatic and critical like Nat, I think she assumes only her blind followers will really care about her and Nat meeting her as an equal and clashing with her but still caring proves her wrong
Taivan
first of all just everything about this current storyline for adult them! so good!! the references to how Divorced they are (and I think it adds definitively more flavor to know they were together at Shauna’s wedding, we know their break up (at least the last one). The mix of affection that’s there are wariness, and harsher tensions especially on Van’s end so good! And while Tai is definitely operating primarily from a selfish place and as per Tawny’s interview not a very romantic one towards anyone love that she seems slightly more tender/is concerned by Van’s lack of tenderness when it is Van. Also in my I love adultery in fiction era in a sense so this arc arrived at the perfect time for me!
Both pairs of actresses have such good chemistry imo definitely some of the best I’ve seen for canon wlw ships recently. Especially Jasmin & Liv’s is so strong and also like… warm in a way that’s so charming.
Like Lottienat it’s a believer/idealist x skeptic/cynic ship and I like that concept for a ship
Jackieshauna
starting with something i don’t think I’ve specifically focused on as much when I talk about them but that I definitely feel strongly about: I love them as an exploration of complicated grief… like there are just so many different layers to Shauna’s grief and it’s such a huge defining loss like that time she told Callie about being given Jackie’s uniform for her 40th birthday and feeling like she’d spent so much of her life thinking about her… and I love the Jackievisions for that reason too (also in a more strictly romantic context just the idea of being haunted by a love in that way rules)
I just love these types of relationships (which anyone familiar with me and my tastes would know) these codependent teen girl friendships that end tragically in some way. And women “making/shaping” other women in terms of crafting their image or what they emulate. the element of literal consumption and just the focus on consumption of all sorts with them adds another layer/takes the concept to a level most shows wouldn’t commit to in terms of exploring the idea I’m very into all of it.
phrase I say a lot about romance: it’s about the Repression tm + also the Obsession tm
(this was for an ask game I reblogged ‘send me a ship and I’ll tell you three things I like about it’)

My T7S x Taylor Swift May Celebration Event!
Hello, everyone! If you follow me on my personal blog, you’ll know that I’m a long-time Swiftie! And with tomorrow being May 1st, it will officially be the month that I get to see Taylor Swift in concert at The Eras Tour.
To celebrate, from now through May 19th (the day of my concert), I will be exclusively posting Taylor Swift themed That ‘70s Show content, including playlists, edits, headcanons, etc.
Because my OTP is Jackie x Hyde, the majority of my content will be about them, although I’ve prepared a few things for Eric x Donna and Red x Kitty as well! And on my blog, season 8 does not exist in any capacity, so all my Taylor Swift inspired T7S content operates on a S8-free happy ending for all the characters and my OTPs.
I want to share your Taylor Swift themed That ‘70s Show content, too! Please feel free to tag me in your posts, or DM me, and I will reblog your work. I also track the tag: #70s-show-diary.
I don’t want to have add a disclaimer, but I’ve been a Swiftie long enough to know that I probably have to: If Taylor Swift is not your thing, I will be tagging everything with #T7S x Taylor Swift, so you can easily block that tag. After May 19th, I will return to my regular episode-by-episode postings of T7S.
(Or if you're as big a Swiftie as I am, you can track the tag and see mine and others niche content!)
I’m very excited to be doing this! I’ve wanted to make Taylor Swift themed content for my favorite show and OTP for years, but never felt there would be a receptive audience. However, I’ve noticed some overlap between T7S and Taylor Swift on my dash with my return to the T7S tumblr community this year, so I thought now was the perfect opportunity.

Here's my 2022 Best Of! Yup, that's right, 2022. Better late than never, huh?
Rico Nasty- Intrusive
I heard good things about Rico Nasty for years but her other projects were a little too repetitive for me to fully commit or enjoy her work. This mixtape sees her replacing her industrial rap sound with a more varied approach. She sings over drum and bass and acoustic music. If you enjoyed Princess Nokia’s Metallic Butterfly or Azealia Banks’ Broke with Expensive Taste, then I recommend this album for you. My favorite songs are Messy, Easy, and Focus on Me.
Sasami- Squeeze
After her work in Cherry Glazer and her 2019 solo debut, Sasami finally (somewhat) broke through with this album and it’s no wonder why. Mixing influences as varied as Sheryl Crow and industrial, Sasami showed us about opening up your heart or wanting to destroy someone else’s. My favorites are The Greatest and Skin a Rat.
Charli XCX- Crash
As her first proper album since 2019’s Charli, this album had a lot of expectations placed upon it since True Romance is her best received official album. Fortunately, it all worked out for her and for us. This album sounds like you are scrolling through the Dance Dance Revolution song selecting screen around 2005 with songs you don’t realize you know until you hear it again years later. My favorites are Constant Repeat, Used to Know Me, Selfish Girl, Good Ones, Baby, and of course, Beg for You.
Beyonce- Renaissance
This album was a victory lap for Beyonce. Not that she slacked off this era, but after creating two innovative video albums, Beyonce wanted to have a more upbeat album after the pandemic. As someone who prefers her uptempos (in a fun club kid way, like Haunted, 7/11, Formation, Six Inch, and Partition instead of the stan wars “go back to Dr. Luke!!111” way), I’m here for it. My favorites include All Up in Your Mind and Pure Honey.
SZA- SOS
I have a general policy where if someone takes over 4 years to release their next project, I develop some kind of object impermanence about them. Not even maliciously, but for every Sky Ferreira (side note: This was written when we still thought Don’t Forget was a part of an era) or My Bloody Valentine, there’s a synthpop band from 2016 that stubbornly sits on the second page of my Last.FM with 189 plays. And I like SZA! CTRL got me though 2017 and 2018 but I completely forgot her rerelease and in between singles until I was preparing this review. So when I heard she was releasing a 20+ track album I was skeptical. It turned out to be great. I enjoy the developed and detailed instruments and her personal lyrics. My favorite songs are Kill Bill, Blind, Shirt and Gone Girl.
Fontaines DC- Skinty Fia
Fontaines DC had a well deserved bigger break out in 2022. I don’t really have a thing to say about this album but I like the way they mix post punk music with a mix of their own Irish culture and gothic and industrial sounds. What could’ve just been a couple of lads at the pub is a unique and informative look at the band and their culture. U2 and Inhaler are shaking. My favorite songs are Jackie Down the Line, Skinty Fia, and How Cold Love Is.
Vero- Unsoothing Interior
I learned about Vero on Popjustice… at least 5 years ago? For a while, it seemed like they would drop a single heavily influenced by Poe and disappear without a follow up or any momentum. I understand it’s hard for new artists to make things work logistically, but they even had repetitive cover art so we couldn’t just joke that there was a wait between the EP and debut. That’s why I was so confused when the album was dropped in 2022. Hailing all the way from Sweden, Vero has vocals that remind me of Shirley Manson and Kim Gordon with post punk music I heard NPR describe (someone else) with the term “fleabag-core”. My favorite songs are Sex and Me and TV shows and Exit 2.
Coco and Clair Clair- Sexy
People always say nostalgia does too much heavy lifting in music now, but the right references can truly justify the most Tweet Deck derivative works. Coco and Clair Clair, who I was very surprised to learn are from Atlanta instead of the UK, have a very retro inspired album that could’ve just been lost in the hyperpop Y2K space with everyone else but they have a different reference pool that elevates them. Hypnotic girl group whispery vocals over whispery chillwave and drum n bass beats truly take me back to the person I was in 2011-2012. If you have a Tumblr photoblog with a convoluted layout that only showed pictures and no captions, this album is for you. If you keep up with McBling depop, this album is for you. If you ever described LAMB by Gwen Stefani as a hip hop album, then this album is for you. I would recommend this album for fans of Kitty and Niki and the Dove. My favorite songs from it are Bad Lil Vibe, Pop Star, and Be With U.
Alvvays- Blue Rev
I didn’t really listen to them before this and I only knew them for the …unique spelling of their band name and a Tumblr post that heavily implied that they should be kept in 2014. Well, this album should put all of their critics to shame. This album was recorded after the band lost their old demos and instruments in a robbery and they were still able to record this album. Pairing dreamy landscapes over fuzzy guitars, Molly Rankin’s confessional lyrics deal with the unexpected nostalgia of running into your ex’s family members in public (a sort of Dan Fogelberg moment for our generation) or justifying a creative career. Besides Pharmacist and Easy on your Own, I recommend Very Online Guy, a leftfield song about male internet behaviors (a self drag, but I want to see how many men wrote about that song and the album). If you only know them from Marry Me, Archie (a song I would personally not leave in a time capsule or box set for indie pop music from 2010-2014), I strongly suggest that you give this album a chance. Fun fact: In addition to being a great meeting spot for coanchors to meet each other, Good Morning America also has a year end best of list and put this as their #1 album. A few years ago, they put the solo project of Soul Coughing’s frontman’s project. So maybe GMA is our new Pitchfork, NME, and Spin Magazine combined (side note: I wrote this before the Pitchfork reshuffle happened, oops).
Shygirl- Nymph
Shygirl has finally released her long awaited debut after releasing her stellar debut. This time, she ditches the electronic and abrasive sound of her 2018 EP and enters her Manny Santos sensual R&B era while still sounding futuristic. Firefly is a song that sounds like it was a Britney 2001 deep cut dusted off and released in 2172. Nike is my other personal stand out.
Hatchie- Giving the World Away
On her sophomore album, Hatchie continues her dream pop and shoegaze sound and expands into some darker palettes that wouldn’t be out of place on the altronica playlist. If that album transported you into a daydream, this album is a moody walk in the rain. My favorites are This Enchanted, Till We Run Out of Air, and Giving the World Away.
Soccer Mommy- Sometimes, Forever
This was sort of a new sound album for Soccer Mommy, with a little more focus on the production. Working with OPN, she had a darker, hazier, more detail oriented production. My favorites include Unholy Affliction, Don’t Ask Me, Feel it All the Time, and Darkness Forever (which gave me Portishead’s second album vibes). This album is more Madder Rose than Massive Attack but you should still give it a shot.
Momma- Household Name
Nostalgic guitar based indie rock that sounds right out of 1994. Reverb guitars, harmonics, and shoegaze pedals. Recommended if you like Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins or Bully’s debut. Speeding 72, Lucky, Brave and No Stage are my favorites.
Luna Li- Duality
Psychedelic alternative R&B with a chamber/art/baroque pop edge. I love how she mixes her vulnerability on songs like Flower with strong guitar moments like Alone but not Lonely and What You’re Thinking. This album feels like if you mixed Kali Uchis with Kadjha Bonet. Recommended if you have only used emojis as captions.
Kilo Kish- American Gurl
Kilo Kish’s last official album was released back in 2016, but her pair of consecutive EP’s that came out in 2018 and 2019 were a more focused and cohesive electronic sound. On this album, she went back to her unique existential pop with irreverent Adult Swim vibes. With her kitchen sink production, detached vocals, and quirky irreverent sound, this album has a lot of reasons to not work but somehow puts everything together and keeps you overstimulated like a TikTok video. Recommendations include Choice Cowboy, New Tricks, and American Gurl. Recommended if you like Santigold or Imani Coppola.
Vitesse X- Us Ephemeral
Growing up, I hated electronic music. Did I listen to it or seek it out specifically? No, not in the slightest. But it was just annoying as I saw my beloved Radio Disney pop rock acts just be seen as cringe as what I call ‘unts unts’ music went on the rise. Also, I just thought the fans were annoying. Maybe it was just in my community, but there were a lot of teen DJs who just got jobs hosting or playing cultural events and sweet 16s and posting pretentious memes that made me roll my eyes. I’ve never seen a MLM girl in real life, but I’ve seen DJs talk about how school is just there to mold you and as a DJ, they can be their own boss. Also, just growing up in the teen club/4 loko/Ed Hardy era just made me think it was all try hard “OH, you’ve never been to a festival?’ stuff. But eventually, Charli XCX helped open my mind to new electronic acts while trip hop and deep house helped open me up to older electronic genres. Then I had an “if it’s retro/ironic it’s okay” mentality but now I can regularly like electronic music. That leads us to Vitesse X. Her art deco style of electronics invokes the sleek future, through her stage name and hi tech titles. Is she making a concept album about how technology was supposed to bring us together but is bringing us apart? Is it a scifi story? Did she promise us a video for each song that made a movie but she stopped and hoped we would forget about it? No! She’s making music you could hear at Zara’s, in your car, or even at a party or club. In this age of hot takes, think pieces, and more, a concept like nepobaby can go from a fun internet only in joke to a “reclaimed” term that loses all meaning. Vitesse X helps prove that sometimes, saying less really is more. My favorites are Potential Energy, Centrifuge Me, and Us Ephemeral.
Piri and Tommy- Froge.mp3
The drum n bass duo that came out of the blue and right back into it. Words is the best positive motivational affirmation dance song since Show Me Love by Robin S. I also like Silver Lining and On & on. It looks like we’re not getting a new project from them, they split up and now they’re going to ruin all of our Last.fm charts because they each get credited separately.
They Hate Change- Finally, New
I feel like Drum n Bass has been on the rise since Princess Nokia’s Metallic Butterfly went on streaming for the last few years, but it had been kind of mixed with other electronic sounds like hyperpop or UK garage so it was an afterthought. They Hate Change overcame that. Rapping over Drum n bass, the Tampa duo helps showcase something cool and forward thinking from Florida on their label debut. I recommend them if you like Outkast or Big Fish Theory from Vince Staples. My favorite songs are Who’s Next, Little Brother, and Perm.
Foushee- Softcore
I hate to make a Mean Girls reference in 2024 (this was another review I had written in winter 2023, before I knew there was a movie adaptation of the Mean Girls musical coming out), but this album reminds me of the Halloween party scene where Cady shows up in an “ugly” costume while everyone is wearing cute costumes and she is confused. That is how this album feels for alternative R&B. While now everyone with a slowed down drum beat gets an alternative R&B genre tag, but this is truly “alternative”, mixing slinky R&B vocals over guitars and yelling. Even if it doesn’t always work (several songs are under 2 minutes), you can definitely admire the attempts. Behind SZA, Foushee is the second best R&B album from a New Jerseyan in 2022 (sorry, 070 Shake). My favorite songs are I’m Fine and Simmer Down. Listen if you want an internet poisoned pop star but Doja has gone too far for you.
Ravyn Lenae- Hypnos
After her stellar 2018 EP, Ravyn finally followed up with her debut album and it was worth the wait. Her airy, hypnotic vocals still sound fresh and the collaborations don’t take away from the sound at all. My favorites are 3D and Venom.
Sudan Archives- Natural Brown Prom Queen
Sudan Archives made it very far on my 2019 Best of List. I would not be able to tell you a song from that album, or if she even made it on (because as of this writing it is still unpublished) but I knew she was talented and I thought her violin gave her a unique sound. This time around, she did a sonic 180 and went for a more left field mixture of sounds and had an even better album. Listen to stand out Homemaker.
Glacier Veins- Lunar Reflection
Normally, I consider my best of list a failure if I don’t find at least one new, completely random small Bandcamp band that didn’t get reviewed from Allmusic or Pitchfork or any other major website. If they don’t have a Wikipedia page, even better! This year, Glacier Veins is one of those bands for me. If you like female fronted pop punk with a side of experimental noise pop added to it, I would definitely recommend them. 2018’s KID, 2009 Paramore, Halsey, Poppy, and Willow fans should be happy. My favorite songs are Cover Me, Here & There, Lunation, Autonomy, and Flower Moon.
Amanda Shires- Take It Like a Man
Alt country queen. Recommended if you waited for Jenny Lewis’ album for Puppy in a Truck or you enjoy feeling like you are a Sons of Anarchy character or perhaps Yellowstone. Mature alt country with great, clear production. My favorite song is Hawk for the Dove. (Side note: I wrote this way before they filed for divorce).
Lola Kirke- Lady for Sale
Picks up where Pearl Charles left off for countrypolitian. If you thought this would be a low effort vanity project you are mistaken. Unclear if this is a pastiche or not but very unexpected country album from this British actress. Pink Sky is my favorite song. Recommended if you like Pearl Charles or Margo Price.
Honey Dijon- Black Girl Magic
A great house music DJ. Recommended if you want to keep the party going after Renaissance.
Montell Fish- Her Love Still Haunts Me Like a Ghost
I listen to an adult alternative college radio station regularly and to paint a picture of what that’s like, I can now say “wow, that Paul Simon song slaps”. Sometimes they do play younger, internet only bedroom produced artists like Claud, Kafune, Joe P, and now, Montell Fish. When I first heard the distorted bass and reverbs I was confused at how different and all out he went but this is a true EP of heartbreak and desperation. Listen if you like PM Dawn, Miguel and Steve Lacy. Pretend Lovers is my favorite song.
Carly Cosgrove- See you in Chemistry
Nostalgia really can sell anything these days. In the DJ world, we got DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ, DJ Ross from Friends, and DJ Seinfeld. There’s even the genre of Dariacore! Emo has a 2000’s pastiche in Carly Cosgrove, a reference I embarrassingly didn’t get for a long time. The nostalgia stops there and the rest is a solid pop punk record. I don’t really listen to a lot of pop punk/emo so I can’t compare to others in the genre but I think the vocals give the instruments room to breathe. My favorites were Rue the Day, Cloudblock, and Munck. Listen if you miss the channel 2000’s The N but at this point would settle for the era of Teennick that only replayed iCarly, Zoey 101, Drake and Josh, Ned’s Declassified, and Victorious.

DUA LIPA - "TRAINING SEASON"
youtube
525,600 sadbois...
[5.53]
Leah Isobel: Every time I try to write this blurb, I stare at a blank screen for 30 minutes before closing the page. I start with how the instrumental choices here invoke classic pop forebears -- flamenco guitars that, in this context, feel like Madonna; descending piano lines that recall ABBA -- and I come up short. I start with her affected enunciation, leaning into the simulated emotion ("I try to see my lovers in a gühd light") and the, uh, being-British ("I hope it hits me like an aurrow") that are her two trademarks, and I come up short. I start by comparing "Training Season" to "Houdini," which did ultimately grow on me, and I come up short. I just don't have anything to say about this song; it's so taut, so perfectly and unremarkably muscular, that my attention bounces right off. So it's a Dua Lipa single. [5]
Katherine St. Asaph: Dua Lipa is the human incarnation of the [6] to [7] range. Here we have some exotica married to the amusing idea that the main attraction of a vertiginous, libidinous love affair is "conversation overload." I don't know -- that line, and the surrounding lyrics like "he's straight talking to my soul" and "are you somebody who can go there?", come off so dating podcast-brained and thus absolutely safe that they make the instrumental sound overheated and unconvincing. [6]
Jackie Powell: Red hair. Leather outfits. Vocal growling -- it happened right here during Dua Lipa’s performance at this year’s BRITs. The disco of “Dance the Night” and Future Nostalgia has officially run its course. While I had questions about how convincing Lipa’s previous single “Houdini” was of her transition into “psychedelic-pop” and “Nineties rock,” Lipa makes a much more cogent argument for her new era with “Training Season.” With main collaborator Caroline Ailin, Lipa constructs an extended metaphor that equates dating to a high-stakes track meet. The influences of Kevin Parker and the Brit pop-rock of Oasis and Blur that Lipa grew up with are much more apparent -- the heart of the song is a conversation between a guitar and a bass during the verses, in addition to a rhythm acoustic guitar that accents the chorus. The bridge -- which is a full bridge, not just a bunch of vocalizations -- is a melodramatic but compelling build that brings everything into complete focus. Her lyrics continue the extended metaphor about running, but finally we’ve arrived at the meet itself, and a classic piano serves as the person who formally tells the runners to take their marks and go. Throughout “Training Season," Dua Lipa wields a type of command that's edgier than her previous work. Interesting doesn’t have to be toxic, as she told Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone, and "Training Season" is her way of responding to the toxic masculinity that has become part of the story of the pop rock music she’s influenced by. [9]
Ian Mathers: Ah yes, another installment in the Dula Peeps Men (Still) Ain't Shit extended cinematic universe. From magic to sports, where will we go next? Farming? Food preparation? I do wish this was as fun to listen to as "Houdini," though. [6]
Taylor Alatorre: The anti-chemistry between Dua Lipa and her Stereogum-bait producers is even more evident here than on "Houdini," and I find it strangely engrossing, albeit with the balance tipped toward "strangely." Getting spins remains the goal, but there's this constant tug-of-war regarding the best strategy for getting them. Kevin Parker tends toward memorable, if incongruous moments of harmonic tension and build-up, while Danny L Harle is presumably the one responsible for those geometric guitar plucks and the antiseptic bubble that is the chorus. Meanwhile, Dua Lipa is there, plugging her vocals into the the designated slots, feeling less essential to the character of her own song than ever. Such are the dangers of outsourcing your sonic re-invention to the indie gentry. [5]
Andrew Karpan: I’m less of a cynic, and I think the idea of burning through various versions of Kevin Parker’s “Less I Know the Better”-type beat through the gasoline shimmer of hyperpop disco (TM) is as fine enough an idea as any to sell the Dua Lipa project -- the value proposition of which remains largely unchanged, even as it continues to be twisted into slightly fewer, but more deliberate, directions. Her voice can always bend, but always the same way, beating on, against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the ’clurb. [5]
Dave Moore: I'm not sold yet on Dua Lipa's chorus-agnostic era. As a perennial Lipa skeptic I thought the stylistic recession on "Houdini" worked for her, and I suppose it works about as well here, but the song is bereft of that one's small pleasures. It sounds like she's rubber-cementing random pop hooks together, whereas before it at least sounded like she was using chewing gum. [6]
Oliver Maier: Something like "Lay All Your Love On Me" is straining to muscle out from beneath Dua's tepid synth-funk, but there's never any real danger it'll break free and liven things up. [4]
Joshua Lu: There's a deadliness to "Training Season" that few artists can execute as well as Dua, with her coquettish voice slinking around you like a snake does its prey. But where the song should grow in intensity, it instead chooses to shrink, and where it should throw a curveball, it instead aims for simplicity — why does the chorus end with such a standard fade-out that resets all of its momentum? The song has all the foundations of a great pop single but is too satisfied with sounding like a decent album track. [5]
TA Inskeep: Her singles have a habit of sneaking up on me. "Levitating" improved by hearing it constantly out in the wild (I don't generally do terrestrial radio, but it was unavoidable). "Cold Heart"'s mash-up eventually sucked me in, and I can't get the short sharp (un)shock of "Houdini" out of my head (it's an [8], just a sparkling pop single). "Training Season" won't join that class, as it has nothing to it but a mild EDM build (ca. 2008) in the chorus that just -- ends. And Lipa sounds even more bored than usual. [4]
Hannah Jocelyn: This would have been a [10] if it came out shortly after Currents; it's still pretty great in 2024, with much more lively production than "Houdini" and genuine risks like that harsh synth towards the end. I'm on board with this direction! [7]
Nortey Dowuona: I wonder if it burns Caroline Polachek up that Dua Lipa will have the big mainstream hit album she will never have and that Danny L Harle is involved with it. I would advise her to listen to Martina Sorbara's 2002 album The Cure for Bad Deeds and accept her niche status instead of fighting it. It might just lead her to eggs over easy. [6]
Dorian Sinclair: So, I read a lot. It’s my primary leisure activity. I read books that profoundly move me, books that open me to whole new ways of thinking, books I immediately recommend to everyone I know. But I also read a steady stream of 5.5/10 genre novels. They’re an important reset between more impactful works: faultlessly competent, reasonably engaging, instantly forgettable. This, to me, is Dua Lipa. [5]
Aaron Bergstrom: Feels like it should work but comes off as listless, directionless, joyless. It's a mild to moderate case of Training Seasonal Affective Disorder. [4]
Wayne Weizhen Zhang: Training season? Guess it makes sense that she sounds so out of breath in that chorus then. [6]

hi liz c': tell me some of your akkaye songs? if you want of course. do you have a playlist? i do, but mine is too short and i'm tired of looping it while writing so i'm looking to steal & make it longer
rowan i don’t think you understand how much i love you for this ask. yes, i have an akkayan playlist and it’s six hours long and i will GLADLY share some of those songs with you
call your mom by noah kahan - VERY recent add but it’s sooooo them, it makes me insane. very aye-talking-akk-down vibes. the lines that especially make me think of them are “oh, love, don’t be discouraged, i’ve been exactly where you are” and “throw a punch, fall in love, give yourself a reason, don’t wanna drive another mile wondering if you’re breathing, so won’t you stay, won’t you stay, won’t you stay with me?”
moondust by jaymes young - i can’t remember exactly who made the edit, i think it was krish? but anyways there was an edit to this song for them and since then i can’t NOT listen to this song without thinking about them. like just “i long to hear your voice, but still i make the choice to bury my love in the moondust” is fucking CRAZY he wrote that song for them
ease by troye sivan ft. broods - they are LITERALLY EACH OTHERS SAFE SPACE. “tell me all of the things that make you feel at ease. your touch, my comfort, and my lullaby.” LIKE. LIKE.
ease my mind by ben platt - more of the same. “you came out of nowhere, and you cut through all the noise. i make sense of the madness, when i listen to your voice”
safe in my hands by eli lieb - AND AGAIN!!! “always standing just outside of the circle, and no one lets you in, blame it on yourself, cause you’re looking in the mirror through a broken window” and “so take my hand, don’t be scared, we can go anywhere, you don’t have to run, you don’t have to hide, cause i got you”
suneater by leanna firestone - literally THE sun/moon ship dynamic song and akkayan are as sun/moon as it gets. their show is literally called the eclipse like cmon!! also “i am just the one who swallowed the moon, the only light that i have’s just a reflection of you” especially makes me think of them LIKE
demons by alec benjamin - VERY akk to aye. “i’ve got all these demons hiding underneath, nobody can see them, nobody but me and you’re the reason, the only thing that keeps me from diving off the deep end” LIKE!!!!!!!!! ARE YOU LISTENING
face the music by louis tomlinson - it bothers me sm that my beloved jackie hasn’t finished the eclipse so they can’t properly be insane over this one with me but. it’s SOOOO AKKAYAN in their ep10-11 era where they were official but secret. like “one more night, i’m gonna choose, i don’t wanna face the music but i still wanna dance with you. let’s buy some time, oh we shouldn’t do” LIKEEEEEE
time-bomb by all time low - literally i put this song on my playlist and then forgot i put it there until antania made an edit for it and i was like “wow that’s so perfect she’s such a genius for that one.” it was me, i was the genius. cause how can you hear the lyrics “it was like a time bomb set into motion, we knew that we were destined to explode, and if i had to pull you out of the wreckage, you know i’m never gonna let you go” and not think of akkayan
die first by nessa barrett - this is one of those songs that fits most ships, but in particular it hits for akkayan given the shit they’ve gone through. like “if one of us dies, i hope i die first, cause i don’t wanna live without you, i don’t wanna ever learn how to fall asleep without you, tell me what’s worse: losing you now or later? maybe i can break the curse and i can be in love forever” is so them it hurts
#i have. so many more and some that are in there for like a single lyric or verse but it makes sense for Me#i love music and i love them and i could talk about them and songs that are them forever and ever#asks#rowan 🪶#💙🎶

60th Anniversary Doctor Who Rewatch – “The Unquiet Death” takes
(Hello. This is part of a series of on-going posts covering my analysis / impressions of RTD-era doctor who episodes (and spin-offs?) as I revisit them.* The **approach of this is candid and informal, with aim to be cleaned up in the future.*)
(I’m dividing this analysis into the following categories:COMPANION WATCH(characterization analysis of the companion for that episode)/THE TIMELESS CHILD RETROACTIVE CONTINUITY BONUS (stuff that Hits Different after knowing the TTC)/ **BLORBOS(things that made me emotional re: characters / ships) THEMES(exploration of possible associations, metaphors and recurring themes)/ COLONIALISM/HEGEMONY (political critiques) / ENVIRONMENT (how the set design or architecture plays a role in the story). Note that not all the episodes may cover these points, it will depend on the episode.)
(These posts will be the basis for a larger live-document that will change according to feedback and BTS material that I encounter in the future. For now think of these posts as advanced-drafts being sent for fandom-peer-review).
COMPANION WATCH:
The bit of Rose putting the slimy old man in his place is pretty awesome. It gives me Jackie Tyler vibes as well, for some reason!
Rose Tytler regularly skipped school to go to the mall and look at boys. I stan one (1) normie. (also, it's criminal Rose and Gwen Cooper never interact, honestly!).
It's a small thing but I find it charming rose already is like "you opened the doors last time so now it's my turn!". Rose has this thing with really managing to… let’s say “keep the pants in the relationship” that I think a lot of companion/doctor dynamics strive to do, but don’t always feel genuine/don’t commit to it? But Rose manages at times to keep the power dynamics somewhat balanced (probably from her experiences with dating older guys like Jimmy Stone and Mickey?).
Then again, this episode also gives us the "Accept the way I do things, or go home". Which is a major power move from The Doctor. "You can leave if you want (I'm tempting to firing you), but I know you won't (you'll do what I think it's best)".
"You've got all the clothes and the breeding, but you talk like some sort of wild thing. / Maybe I am. Maybe that's a good thing" Rose as a sex positive activist :)
THEMES Bodies as a resource that becomes more valuable once its dead. Once again separation of the “body” from the “personsoul/consciousness** Modern Hypocrisy. Diplomacy and Negotiation (once again not working). Grief, Mourning and “Respect for the Dead”. Class (the Classic Rose/Gwen dialogue but also ‘’You look like a navvie” (from Dickens to the Doc). Margins: Cardiff, not London. Undertakers? Ghostly Christmas (paganism?). Atheism (falsely questioned?). Science Fiction vs Realist Fiction. Nine fighting / doctoring as his way of “Dancing” (“I think this is my dance” *as he saves Rose from the zombie). Fatality as in literal death and as in an attitude towards life. Illusions vs Reality (Dicken’s dilemma but also the “escapist” aspect of Rose’s travels meeting the reality of having to make tough calls). Time / Death. Destiny. Telepathy. We get also a biiit of an introduction to the whole “Earth’s self-determination” thing the New Series explores (Gwenivere should make the call of what happens to her).
BLORBOS:
Nine referring to Rose as “Barbarella”…….. coughhisroleplayscenariocough
"you look beautiful... considering that you're human" is this another nine stupid apes moment or nine's first "curse of the timelords" moment?
THE TIMELESS CHILD RETROACTIVE CONTINUITY BONUS:
The Child could have come from the (a) rift? see:
DOCTOR: Means it's getting stronger, the rift's getting wider and something's sneaking through / ROSE: What's the rift? / DOCTOR: A weak point in time and space. A connection between this place and another. That's the cause of ghost stories, most of the time.
Dickens gives us some parallels to The Doctor’s curse of immortality:
"Absolutely. I was just brooding. Christmas Eve. Not the best of times to be alone. "/ I've been rather, let's say, clumsy, with family matters. Thank God I'm too old to cause any more trouble. / You speak as though it's all over, sir. / No, it's never over. On and on I go, the same old show. I'm like a ghost, condemned to repeat myself for all eternity. "
ENVIRONMENT: the final confrontation taking place on a basement signaling the “Underground War” theme of s1. Dicken’s performance signaling the self-referential/post-modern vibe of the New Series (show within a show).
COLONIALISM / HEGEMONY: couple points… this is the kind of episodes that the more I thought about the implications the more uncomfortable it got, unfortunately.
History in *theory* being in “flux” and regrettable, but ultimately the Status Quo must be preserved. Many times aliens will come asking for help, whether genuinely or not the show's format is restricted on legitimately changing the status quo of earht, bc it means distancing the audience from "that" version of earth.
Implicit in the mythos of the Time War and The Shadow Proclamation is the notion of human societies being “advanced” (and thus other societies being "primitive". We discover that the Time War was “Invisible to smaller species but devastating to higher forms”. What does this mean? What is a “smaller species” and what is a “higher form”? Also, we know from episode 1 that the earth’s position in the “technological scale” makes it vulnerable to “invaders”. There’s a lot of assumptions implicit in this whole set up: that a technologically “superior” civilization will *always* invade a “lower” one (a kind of naturalization of colonialism), that technological advancements can be categorized this way in a progressive 1-10 scale, and that "a societies is defined by its tech" (presumably The Shadow Proclamation defines tech in the narrow, “tools and science” definition, and not the wider anthropological "any ideas that produce a desired effect" definition).
There’s a bit of an Atheist vs Supernatural thing going on in this episode. The UK is at its core still largely a Christian country, but it’s been progressively shifting with time to an atheist / agnostic one as the ruling classes has distanced from its primary tool of consent making (Christians were 71.6% on the uk's 2001 census, 59.3% on the 2011 census vs 46.2% on the 2021 one). So, it makes sense the writing reflects this anxiety. It gets a bit bizarre though…to explain, let’s look at the crux of Dickens arc, found in this dialogue:
"I've always railed against the fantasists. Oh, I loved an illusion as much as the next man, rebelled in them, but that's exactly what they were, illusions. The real world is something else. I dedicated myself to that. Injustices, the great social causes. I hoped that I was a force for good. Now you tell me that the real world is a realm of specters and jack-o'-lanterns. In which case, have I wasted my brief span here, Doctor? Has it all been for nothing?"
But... his worldview is truly being challenged by the situation. There IS a rational explanation to the “ghosts”, there aren’t “specters and jack-o.lanterns” in the who-world (eu voice: not after The Anchoring Of The Thread!). Dickens walks from the story with the impression that irrationality is True and There’s Life After Death and that he’s wasted his time writing about “the great social causes”. Again… it’s strange. I’m not sure the episode is aware it is doing this?
Finally we get the Really uncomfortable (unintentional?) allegory of this episode…
->The Gelth are refugees from a war between “superior civilizations”. -> The Gelth intentionally lie about their numbers and resources they need. ->They lie about being a “couple hundred”- turns out they’re billions! ->Earthlings cannot share their land with them. Because they will take “everything”. ->The only solution is to kill them, they’re too duplicitous and aggressive to do anything else! ->(And once again, like with the Nestene... there’s not really a grappling with how it was the Time Lords' fault that this is even happened).
#doctor who#dw#60threwatch#dw meta#just discovered the markdown option!!#god bless no more formatting woes#also this is like 12000 words rip skdfjsdf i totally underestimated how long this project is going to take#might take me until the christmas special to do s1-s4

I hope I’m not late to the question session but! Everyone more or less knows Iris has been there a lot longer than them, but do they ever think about in terms of the numbers?
She’s *105*, which is a very long way off Stacy’s 3009 or even Jackie’s 1985. (I know leora’s is in the 4 thousands I just can’t remember off the top of my head)
Idk I just thought it was interesting
Don’t worry about being late. In fact, I’m going on a road trip soon, so I’ll have nothing but time to answer any asks, since I can’t really write much on my phone.
I don’t take SCP designations as a hard rule when it comes to the ages/classification dates of SCP, largely because there are so many SCPs about things that happened in the future or past that it would be a nightmare to keep straight. I know many authors take the age of the *actual* article, which corresponds to its series and therefore number, as a bit of a pointer. For example, you’ll see a lot of articles like “the Foundation was different back then (describes popular series 1-era headcanon) but things are different now (describes popular modern headcanon).” In fact, this is probably most apparent in mainline Resurrection.

“So,” Gigi prompted once Crystal returned to the cabin, “how much trouble did you get in?”
Crystal pouted as she flopped onto her bed. “Three days no free play. Brooke Lynn said I’m lucky no one got hurt, or I could’ve gotten kicked out. But, like, how was I supposed to know you can’t set cursed toys on fire. They literally taught us how to do it!”
“They taught us how to make a campfire,” Jackie chimed in, sitting up in her bunk, “to make s’mores, not arson.”
The point went right over Crystal’s head as she cheerily exclaimed, “arson! That’s gonna be his name!” She looked up at her and added, “you’re his godmother now.”
“Nuh uh, I am not going to be made into an accomplice,” she shook her head and laid back down, pointedly holding her book up to block her face.
“Did they let you keep it?” Jaida asked.
Crystal nodded as she rifled through her bag. “It’s still my property, possessed or not,” she explained, finally holding up the partially charred furby. “Maybe drowning would work, less dangerous.”
“Crystal, no,” Jackie warned.
“Crystal, yes,” Jaida countered. “Guess Gigi’s the deciding vote.”
“That’s not fair, everyone knows Gigi can’t say ‘no’ to her!”
Gigi pouted. “Hey!” After a beat of silence with Crystal looking at her expectantly, she quietly got up and mumbled, “she’s gonna do it anyway, someone’s gotta make sure she doesn’t get hurt.”

Taylor Swift Seattle concert generates seismic activity
Taylor Swift's concerts in the US city of Seattle generated seismic activity equivalent to a 2.3 magnitude earthquake, a seismologist has said.
The data was recorded at Swift's sell-out Eras tour performances at Lumen Field on 22 and 23 July.
Seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach said the activity was caused by Swift's fans or the sound system.
The shows beat the previous record in Seattle, known as the city's "Beast Quake" in 2011.
That was generated by American football fans celebrating Marshawn Lynch's touchdown for the Seattle Seahawks during a game against the New Orleans Saints.
Dr Caplan-Auerbach, a geology professor at Western Washington University, told CNN the difference between the NFL game and Swift's recent concerts was just 0.3, but the "shaking was twice as strong" and "absolutely doubled it".
"I grabbed the data from both nights of the concert and quickly noticed they were clearly the same pattern of signals," she said. "If I overlay them on top of each other, they're nearly identical."
The Seattle concerts were played in front of a total of 144,000 fans over two nights.
Music concerts have been known to cause seismic activity before, for example during a 2011 Foo Fighters concert in New Zealand.

Dress
Our secret moments in your crowded room They got no idea about me and you There is an indentation in the shape of you Made your mark on me, a golden tattoo
All of this silence and patience, pining in anticipation My hands are shaking from holding back from you (ah, ah, ah) All of this silence and patience, pining and desperately waiting My hands are shaking from all this (ah, ha, ha, ha)
Say my name and everything just stops I don't want you like a best friend Only bought this dress so you could take it off Take it off Carve your name into my bedpost 'Cause I don't want you like a best friend Only bought this dress so you could take it off Take it off
Inescapable, I'm not even gonna try And if I get burned, at least we were electrified I'm spilling wine in the bathtub You kiss my face and we're both drunk Everyone thinks that they know us But they know nothing about
All of this silence and patience, pining in anticipation My hands are shaking from holding back from you (ah, ah, ah) All of this silence and patience, pining and desperately waiting My hands are shaking from all this (ah, ha, ha, ha)
Say my name and everything just stops I don't want you like a best friend Only bought this dress so you could take it off Take it off Carve your name into my bedpost 'Cause I don't want you like a best friend Only bought this dress so you could take it off Take it off Only bought this dress so you could take it off Only bought this dress so you could take it off
Flashback when you met me Your buzzcut and my hair bleached Even in my worst times You could see the best of me Flashback to my mistakes My rebounds, my earthquakes Even in my worst lies You saw the truth in me And I woke up just in time Now I wake up by your side My one and only, my lifeline I woke up just in time Now I wake up by your side My hands shake, I can't explain this ah, ha, ha, ha
Say my name and everything just stops I don't want you like a best friend Only bought this dress so you could take it off Take it off Carve your name into my bedpost 'Cause I don't want you like a best friend Only bought this dress so you could take it off Take it off
There is an indentation in the shape of you Only bought this dress so you could take it off You made your mark on me, golden tattoo Only bought this dress so you could take it off

A day late Rosenali birthday fic, because I’m in a bit of a Rosenali era atm. And for her birthday, Denali finally gets her happy ending.
“Happy birthday.” Rose stands in her doorway, a smirk begrudgingly described as cute playing on her lips. She’s holding a rather large cookie cake and two forks, and the look of it all leaves Denali shaking her head, sighing playfully as she pushes her work aside and gestures for her friend to come in. Rose crosses the room quickly, sets the cookie down and engulfs the blonde in a tight hug, a knee propped next to Denali’s thigh on her chair. She kisses her forehead, pats her hair before taking a seat on the edge of her desk and pulling the cookie into her lap.
“Got you a present,” Rose mutters through her concentration, struggling with the container before it opens with a satisfying pop. She holds it out to Denali, who raises an eyebrow.
“Got me a present? We both know you’re eating half of this right now.”
“Not this, something else! But it’s a surprise and it’s for later, and it you’re not going to be nice to me then maybe I’ll just keep it instead.”
“Yeah, we both know that’s not happening.” The blonde ignores the offer of a fork and rips off a piece with her hands instead, sighing as the cookie melts in her mouth.
“You’re still going to let me take you out tonight, right?”
“Of course! Where else am I going to be, alone on my couch?”
“You know I wouldn’t let that happen.”
“Yeah, because I don’t have a roommate.”
“That seals the deal, I’ll be honest.”
…
Rose’s a mess.
She’s certifiably insane, a tornado in her own right. She flies around the apartment on her toes, muttering to herself while trying to set her makeup and throw things in her bag at the same time. Jan and Jackie watch from the couch where some Netflix show they’re bingeing loses their attention. It’s endearing, the older girl fluffing up her hair and (thank goodness) remembering to brush away the powder that’d made her look far too ghostly.
“You’re going to be fine,” Jackie reassures her. The comfort of her voice slows Rose down a bit, has her stopped in front of the couch. She’s frozen, and Jackie takes this as a sign to find some more to say. “She really likes you. I would know, I’m the person sitting next to her at all your shows.”
“She likes the bar.”
“She likes you.”
Jan holds up a hand, rolling her eyes in a way that’s both teasing and completely serious and 100% Jan. The young, bubbly blonde could bottle her advice and sell it if only she could balance it with her insatiable instinct to meddle whenever the chance arises.
“I mean, you’ve been sleeping together for months now. She basically told you she wants to marry you. Yeah, she was drunk but come on, Rose. You’re the one holding everything back.”
“Gee, thanks Jan.”
“I’m just telling you to get your head out of your ass, that’s all. You wouldn’t be acting like a nervous wreck if it didn’t mean anything. And you definitely haven’t done all of this for any of your hookups before.”
“Well, it’s just dinner.”
“Just dinner just the two of you at a pretty upscale place. On her birthday.”
“Whatever comes out of this, just try to live in it. Tell your head to be quiet for once…you’re not a fuck up.”
Rose nods, makes an excuse to head for the bathroom while emotion wells up in her chest. Staring at herself in the mirror, she lets Jackie’s repeat themselves over in her head. Whatever this is, she’s not a fuck up. She won’t be a fuck up anymore.
…
She picks Denali up ten minutes earlier than anticipated, too anxious to wait any longer. They chat idly on the way to the restaurant, agreeing on this window of time being the only time that kid talk is allowed. Sure, there’s catching up to do with the end of the school year looming before them, art shows and concerts and showcases and finals rearing their ugly heads. But the school talk boundary is sacred, something that’s helped their friendship survive outside of school. It’s nice to have teacher friends, but it’s also nice to have teacher friends who can clock out with you and show their other side.
The place Rose has chosen is slightly more upscale than their usual haunts-well, a lot of things are more upscale than Thai food and Netflix on the couch. She’s glad that they’re been put at a window seat, because it’s become increasingly difficult not to stare at her companion in the ambient lighting of the restaurant. She’s wearing a lavender dress that hugs her curves, stopping mid-thigh. As she settles in and takes off her jacket, the dress has thin straps that has Rose’s attention drawn to her collarbones, which she’s dusted with a subtle amount of highlight.
She’s sure Denali was put on this earth to drive her crazy.
There’s a polite silence as the waitress brings them their menus, promising to be back with water. Rose thumbs the menu open and shut, looking around the room. There are mostly tables for two and four, and everyone seems to be on a date. She feels stupid-stupid for taking Denali here without mentioning it’d be less laid back…she even feels stupid in her favorite dress, a velvety emerald off one shoulder number that she’d thought made her hair look even more orange.
She’s out of her element, and it shows in the tightness of her chest.
“I’m sorry this isn’t like…it’s not some big crazy party or anything..”
“Sorry?” Denali reaches across the table, links their fingers together for a moment. Their pinkies are the last to go, the touch lingering like the buzzing warmth between them. “Rosie, there’s nothing to be sorry about. This is really, really nice.”
“Okay-okay, good. Good. Do you want…?” She gestures to a tiny bucket on the edge of their table, where a bottle of champagne sits in a bath of ice. The blonde nods, humming in appreciation at the luxury of it all. Rose fills each of their flutes and they clink their glasses together, Denali grinning teasingly.
“Okay, the cheers was kind of cheesy. I can’t exactly let you live that one down.” Looking across the table, Rose is struck by the same magnetism that hits her each time she’s in the blonde’s presence. Her mind always has a place for her, some little reserved spot that’s memorized the shape of her smile or the sound of her voice calling her name.
This has been more than she’d anticipated from the first day they met, and then again from the first time they’d slept together. Rose doesn’t fall in love-she doesn’t have the time, the emotional bandwidth, the schedule. But she’d been making exceptions for Denali for more than a year and a half in their friendship, and within whatever amount of that time they’d been sleeping together she hasn’t even looked at another girl. She hasn’t wanted to. And she hadn’t even noticed.
Because why would she want anybody else when Denali is right in front of her-has been right in front of her for so long? What could compare to the spark of mischief in her smile, the way her eyes shift to an even deeper brown when she’s saying Rose’s name over and over? There is nobody like her. Nobody has that competitive streak, the one that makes Rose want to be the most elevated version of herself simply to keep up with Denali’s brilliance.
She’s one of a kind, and Rose is an idiot.
Denali’s also staring back at her quizzically, the hint of a smile on her lips.
“Did you hear one word I just said?”
“If we’re being honest? Nope.” She’s sheepish, shrugging her shoulders apologetically and taking a small sip of champagne.
“Where’d you go?
“I don’t want to ruin your birthday…”
“Oh god, here we go…”
“I’m serious, hear me out.” Rose repeats Jackie’s words in her head. She lets them echo, drown out any last inkling of the self-doubt that’s been plaguing her for so long. She looks at Denali from across the table; Denali, who’s exquisite and smart and challenging and sweet. It’s Denali who looks back at her with warmth and patience, who holds her hand across the table again. Rose takes a deep breath. It’s time.
“I want to ask if maybe we can talk about where we stand. Like…if you’d want to make things exclusive. I’m done fucking around. I feel like my behavior hasn’t been the best with you-I know it hasn’t been the best. You’re worth more than that and I’m not good at all of this but I swear I’ll be the best at it for you. I feel like I’ve wasted so much time being an idiot and I don’t really deserve the chance, but I want to be more than whatever it is we are right now. I’m ready.”
The blonde’s expression is unreadable at first, her eyes searching Rose with a shielded wanting, hope.
“And this….isn’t an April Fools joke. You’re serious about being serious?”
“I know I’ve been an ass but I wouldn’t go that far! I want this. I don’t really think I’ve ever been in love like this in my entire life.”
“And when you turned me down the first time?”
“That was unfair to you. It was rude and uncalled for and I’ll probably regret that for the rest of my life.” It’s an immediate response, the self-inflicted insult flying from her lips in the way she’d been thinking about her own actions for weeks. “I really don’t even deserve to be your friend still. I may have been drunk, but that’s no excuse for walking away like that. I was scared. I am scared. But I can’t lose you. I’m going to put in the work. I finally did what I should’ve done all along and I’ve been in therapy for a few weeks now. I need you to know how serious I am.”
“Okay.”
“Okay..?”
“Okay, I’ll give you a chance.”
“We can start over, if that’s what you want. We can go by first date rules.”
Denali’s jaw drops open and she crosses her arms over her chest, exasperated.
“All I was waiting for was to be on the same page as you. Do you really think I’m going to let you kiss me on the cheek and send me home alone? Come on, it’s my birthday. I’ve missed you.”
She brushes her foot along Rose’s leg underneath the table, runs a hand through her hair. She smirks at the same time the ginger’s breath hitches. When their waitress comes over again she tilts her head and asks politely for the check, feigning innocence.
“We have dessert waiting at home, thank you.”
Denali winks at the unsuspecting waitress and reaches for her jacket, shrugs it on while waiting for Rose to pay the check. When everything’s settled she springs up from her seat, holding her hand out to the ginger with wiggling fingers.
“What about your present?” Rose fumbles with her bag, making a move to open it before Denali wraps both her hands around Rose’s arm, leaning foreword to brush her lips against her ear.
“I’m sure it’s great and I’d love it later, but we’ve never had sex as girlfriends before and I’m dying to change that.”

omg ok this lady waiting for her ride won’t leave my lobby so I can’t get out my laptop & write (I mean I can but idk I’d prefer to wait til she leaves) so I’m just on my phone so I might as well tell y’all the dream I had last night
I was in Yellowjackets & it was all the characters & me & we were in the wilderness but Jackie was still alive. Also instead of Shauna it was Lottie that was pregnant & no one knew who the father was. Misty thought it was Ben & Natalie thought it was Travis & that caused some drama but then people reminded them we haven’t been on the island that long. Doomcoming had still happened in this universe btw.
Anyway Lottie was acting increasingly weird & starting her cult leader era just like the end of season 1 & also sometimes she acted possessed & it was super creepy. We got rescued though & we were staying at this hotel ? (not the hotel that I work at irl it was like an airport hotel). Lottie had her baby in the hotel room. Me, Shauna, & Taissa had to deliver it.
For some reason, we got this really evil vibe from the baby & Van came into our hotel room (I was sharing with Lottie, Shauna, & Taissa) & was trying to talk us into killing the baby. Taissa was against it but Shauna was quiet & she was just playing with this knife glaring at the baby which was sleeping cuddled with Lottie. I didn’t know what to say cause I didn’t want to kill a baby but it was literally radiating this terrifying evil vibe.
Then the baby opened its eyes & they were glowing red & it started speaking tongues?
Anyway then Lottie woke up & she just glared at us & it was low key terrifying. But that’s when I woke up & the dream ended. So yeah Yellowjackets au I guess ?

The legacy of Fernando Valenzuela
Heartbreak would probably best describe how the Los Angeles Dodgers and their fans are feeling now that news of the passing of former pitching great Fernando Valenzuela has come to light. “On behalf of the Dodger organization, we profoundly mourn the passing of Fernando,” said Stan Kasten, President & CEO, Los Angeles Dodgers. “He is one of the most influential Dodgers ever and belongs on the Mount Rushmore of franchise heroes. He galvanized the fan base with the Fernandomania season of 1981 and has remained close to our hearts ever since, not only as a player but also as a broadcaster. He has left us all too soon. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife Linda and his family.” The Los Angeles Dodgers mourn the passing of legendary pitcher Fernando Valenzuela. pic.twitter.com/MXeBlDzDWJ— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 23, 2024 Not only was Valenzuela an All-Star pitcher for the Dodgers, but he had become a welcomed fixture in the team’s broadcast booth, press box and around the stadium long after his playing days were over. When he came up on the Major League Baseball scene, Fernandomania was a revered praise that fans bestowed on the Mexican-born native. If you lived at the time that Fernandomania was at its peak, the popular chant was everywhere. Valenzuela became an iconic figure during the decade (1980 to 1990) that he played for the Dodgers. “He turned the game into a religion,” Hall of Fame broadcaster Jaime Jarrin once said. He came up as a hotshot 19-year-old rookie for the Dodgers and had limited success. It wasn’t until his second season that Valenzuela looked like he was going to be a keeper. Aside from the statistical accolades he achieved, Valenzuela was an even more cultural icon. When you look at his final numbers 173 wins against 134 defeats and a 3.54 era, they do not tell the entire scope of Valenzuela's dominance and impact on the game. Outside of Kobe Bryant, no professional athlete has come to personify the city of Los Angeles as Valenzuela did. And beyond the racial barrier-breaking Jackie Robinson, no other Dodger has been as culturally important to the team as Valenzuela, who was part of two World Series teams. Valenzuela became the first person to win the Rookie of the Year Award and Cy Young Award in the same season (1981). Fernandomanía por siempre. Fernandomania forever. pic.twitter.com/zXhOF8cRCP— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 23, 2024 And yet he was never given the nod to become a Hall of Famer. The Dodgers retired his jersey in the summer of 2023. “To be a part of the group that includes so many legends is a great honor,” Valenzuela said on being part of the Dodgers Ring of Honor and having his number retired. “But also for the fans — the support they’ve given me as a player and working for the Dodgers, this is also for them. I’m happy for all the fans and all the people who have followed my career. They’re going to be very excited to know that my No. 34 is being retired.” Valenzuela’s passing comes as the Dodgers prepare to play the New York Yankees in the 2024 World Series. Commissioner of Baseball Robert D. Manford Jr. issued a lengthy statement paying homage to Valenzuela and his legacy. “Fernando Valenzuela was one of the most impactful players of his generation. With his distinctive pitching style, the Dodger left-hander’s rookie season generated so much excitement in the U.S. and his native Mexico that it became commonly referred to as ‘Fernandomania.’ His 1981 season ranks among the most decorated pitching years of all-time as Fernando was the National League Rookie of the Year, the NL Cy Young Award winner, a Silver Slugger, and a World Series Champion,” Manfred said. “Following his memorable career, Fernando was an outstanding ambassador for baseball. He consistently supported the growth of the game through the World Baseball Classic and at MLB events across his home country. As a member of the Dodger broadcasting team for more than 20 years, Fernando helped to reach a new generation of fans and cultivate their love of the game. Fernando will always remain a beloved figure in Dodger history and a special source of pride for the millions of Latino fans he inspired,” he added Top Photo Caption: Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela pitches at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif., 1988.
