As was discussed in the notes, there are a number of methods for measuring the length of a bird's beak; it looks like the most commonly used for the kiwi is from the tip to the cere (Colbourne et al. 2020). However, like so many things in science, there is no one definitive way to measure a bird's beak for many other bird species. Measuring from the tip to the nostril and from the tip to the cere are both considered valid measurements for other bird species (Williams et al. 2019 and Shao et al. 2016). I was taught to do both when banding birds.

Additionally, as I said, I was told this by keepers at the Otorohanga Kiwi House (they even made an Instagram post about it), and since I'm not by any means an expert on kiwis I was willing to take their word for it. Personally, if you want further clarification on this, I would reach out to them directly, as they may have better sources than I do.

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

Though it may not look like it, kiwis actually have the shortest beak of any bird! Scientists measure the length of a birds beak from their nostrils to the tip; kiwis have their nostrils right at the end to help them sniff out insects underneath the leaf litter and soil, so by scientific standards their beak is no more than a centimeter (0.3 in) long!

Are you irish!?? I saw your OC Kevin (that I love btw) and you said he's irish. I myself am rish, and I just love seeing an irish mention, and was there any reason you picked irland? Also, how did Kevin find his way to Gravity Fall's? (Sorry for all the questions. Your character is just so fun to me, and I'd love to know more about his story)

I'm not Irish, but the reasons why I made Kevin Irish are two:

One: Kevin is based off Achilles from the game Hades. While Achilles doesn't have an Irish accent, at first I thought about making Kevin Irish because he uses the word "lad" a lot.

Two: I've spent three years of my life every summer in Ireland due to a summer school project organized by my high school, and this went on until 2020 when Covid struck.

I honestly fell in love with that country, all the people I've met were very friendly but reserved, which I appreciated and the places I've been to were breathtaking. I got a lot of things both good and bad to say about Ireland but I'm going to stop here 😅

So, when it comes to why Kevin is Irish yet he finds itself in Gravity Falls.

At first he lived in Ireland, then his mother decided to move to America to live "The American Dream". They then moved from New Hampshire to California and finally to Oregon where Kevin's mom got severely Ill. So, in order to gather some cash, Kevin worked tirelessly to pay for his mom's medical expenses, eventually finding a job at The Murder Hut (aka. The Mystery Shack)

Redding Things Up

Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere, I'm just shuffling a few things around. Mostly all of the off-fandom things that I have around here.

I'm sure most of you who've been following me for long enough have noticed the amount of stuff I've been reblogging that are in no-way Ninjago related (It's also making finding anything in my archive really freaking annoying!)
