New Balance x Kawhi Leonard II NBA ALL-STAR 2022
New Balance, together with two-time NBA Finals MVP and NBA 75th Anniversary Team member Kawhi Leonard unveil the stars new signature shoe, the New Balance KAWHI II, the third iteration of the New Money colorway.
The New Balance KAWHI II, will make its on-court debut with the New Money colorway at the Ruffles NBA All-Star Celebrity Game worn by Grammy nominated musician and newly-named New Balance ambassador Jack Harlow with Kawhi wearing it during the NBA All-Star 75th Anniversary Ceremony on Sunday, February 20th. The New Balance KAWHI II comes packed with innovative features to help boost performance and a full assortment of apparel. The New Balance KAWHI II New Money apparel collection includes a hoodie, pant and t-shirt that were curated by Clayton and Chris Griggs working with the New Balance design team. The full collection will officially launch on newbalance.com and select retailers on March 19, 2022 with the suggested retail prices for the footwear at $160, $40 for the t-shirts, $75 for the pant and $80 for the hoodie.
Designed and inspired by Kawhi, the third shoe of the New Money colorway series continues to draw inspiration from a design meeting where Kawhi certain felt details reminded him of stacks of money. Continuing the New Money series aims to evolve the original storyline and inspire the next generation of athletes to build their own legacies as entrepreneurs and strive for excellence beyond sport, just as New Balance and Kawhi have done together.
“To release a second version of a signature shoe together with New Balance is an honor and a privilege,” says Kawhi. “My goal was to be fully immersed in every aspect of the design process to create a shoe that truly reflects me as a person and as an athlete. From the new innovation in the KAWHI II to the inspiration behind “New Money” colorway, I hope the next generation of athletes strive for excellence on and off the court.”
The New Balance KAWHI II is a significantly lighter version of Kawhi’s original signature shoe, which was a request made from the athlete himself. This second version packs in new performance technologies in order to achieve Kawhi’s goal of a lighter, more explosive version. The KAWHI II features an updated performance plate that works in conjunction with the full-length FuelCell midsole providing the ultimate energy return. Another new performance feature, developed by the NB Hoops designed team, is FitWeave Lite, a light-weight woven textile meant to have a more lightweight, customizable fit; giving players adaptive stretch and support where they need it.
“Kawhi wanted to honor his gameplay and deliver a shoe that spoke to him as an individual,” explains Jonathan Grondin, New Balance Design Director. “Together with our Sports Research Lab we developed innovative technologies for today’s basketball athlete in the new KAWHI II. Working with an athlete of Kawhi’s caliber is so exciting, he comes to every meeting with ideas we can truly create together and is always willing to do something different.”
The New Balance KAWHI signature series continues to be all about Kawhi putting a personal stamp on his signature product. New Balance and Kawhi will deliver additional colorways in the coming months giving further insight into Kawhi the person, athlete and entrepreneur. Quote
Around him, he could hear the Overlook Hotel coming to life. It was hard to say just how he knew, but he guessed it wasn't greatly different from the perceptions Danny had from time to time ... like father, like son. Wasn't that how it was properly expressed? It wasn't a perception of sight or sound, although it was very near to those things, separated from those senses by the filmiest of perceptual curtains. It was as if another Overlook now lay scant inches beyond this one, separated from the real world (if there is such a thing as a 'real world,' Jack thought) but gradually coming into balance with it. He was reminded of the 3-D movies he'd seen as a kid. If you looked at the screen without the special glasses, you saw a double image—the sort of thing he was feeling now. But when you put the glasses on, it made sense. All the hotel's eras were together now, all but this current one, the Torrance Era. And this would be together with the rest very soon now. That was good. That was very good. He could almost hear the self-important ding!ding! of the silver-plated bell on the registration desk, summoning bellboys to the front as men in the fashionable flannels of the 1920s checked in and men in fashionable 1940s double-breasted pinstripes checked out. There would be three nuns sitting in front of the fireplace as they waited for the check-out line to thin, and standing behind them, nattily dressed with diamond stickpins holding their blue-and-white-figured ties, Charles Grondin and Vito Gienelli discussed profit and loss, life and death. There was a dozen trucks in the loading bays out back, some laid one over the other like bad time exposures. In the east-wing ballroom, a dozen different business conventions were going on at the same time within temporal centimeters of each other. There was a costume ball going on. There were soirees, wedding receptions, birthday and anniversary parties. Men talking about Neville Chamberlain and the Archduke of Austria. Music. Laughter. Drunkenness. Hysteria. Little love, not here, but a steady undercurrent of sensuousness. And he could almost hear all of them together, drifting through the hotel and making a graceful cacophony. In the dining room where he stood, breakfast, lunch, and dinner for seventy years were all being served simultaneously just behind him. He could almost ... no, strike the almost. He could hear them, faintly as yet, but clearly—the way one can hear thunder miles off on a hot summer's day. He could hear all of them, the beautiful strangers. He was becoming aware of them as they must have been aware of him from the very start. All the rooms of the Overlook were occupied this morning. A full house. And beyond the batwings, a low murmur of conversation drifted and swirled like lazy cigarette smoke. More sophisticated, more private. Low, throaty female laughter, the kind that seems to vibrate in a fairy ring around the viscera and the genitals. The sound of a cash register, its window softly lighted in the warm half-dark, a depression bomber, a sloe gin fizz, a zombie. The jukebox, pouring out its drinkers' melodies, each one overlapping the other in time.

“We see the operation of a glass ceiling, a metaphor for the barriers facing women stuck at middle management where they can see the top but cannot reach it.”
– from the Wellesley Centers for Women Study
LEE, MA – Organizers of the pilot Berkshire Leadership Summit, an event for women aspiring to, or already in, leadership positions in the non-profit theatre, and hosted by WAM Theatre, are excited to announce that the attendees of this event have been selected.
Of the 163 women theatre professionals who applied to participate in the Berkshire Leadership Summit, 75 have been accepted, hailing from 22 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces. This cohort reflects an emphasis the Steering Committee members placed on diversity, accessibility, and intentionality early in the process. Towards this goal, the steering committee members, comprised of Kristen van Ginhoven, Artistic Director of WAM Theatre (Steering Committee Chair); Akiba Abaka, Audience Development Manager at ArtsEmerson; Rachel Fink, Managing Director of Theatre Bay Area; and Shafer Mazow, who currently works at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, went through a rigorous selection process that focused on creating a cohort that balanced career (early/late/mid-career), background (race, sexual identity, geography), and level of leadership experience. The process resulted in an intentional balance of these criteria in an effort to provide the greatest opportunity for personal growth and community-building for each attendee at the summit.

“When I stood up at a microphone at American Conservatory Theater’s Women’s Leadership Conference in August 2016 and said WAM Theatre would host a summit as a next step in the national conversation around gender parity in the theatre, never, ever did I think it would result in this sort of response,” explained Kristen van Ginhoven, WAM’s Artistic Director. “The desire for this sort of event is very clear. “
“Getting this sort of response confirms that we were embarking on something timely and critical in discussions of equity and inclusion in the field.” said Shafer Mazow, Steering Committee Member and a lead developer and organizer of the Women’s Leadership Project and convening that inspired the Berkshire Leadership Summit. “Women of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities struggle to break the glass ceiling in theatre, and the diversity of applicants proves we are articulating and addressing a need for that glass ceiling to be shattered for everyone.”
Early- to late-career theatre professionals from British Columbia to Brooklyn will come together in Lenox, Massachusetts, for two days at the end of October. The summit will have a three-part structure: Networking opportunities, rigorous Skill-Building sessions and Advancing the Discourse panels, which will be livestreamed through HowlRound. The Steering Committee will announce the speakers, panelists, and schedule next month.
Attendees such as Emika Abe of Atlanta, Georgia, have long felt the uneven ground of gender parity in theatre and are eager to support other participants in leveling this playing field. “It can be difficult to envision myself in a formal leadership position when there isn’t an abundant pool of leaders who look like me from which to gather inspiration,” she explains. “This creates a barrier to really owning that we deserve a seat at the table.”
Canadian attendee Heather Cant echoes this sentiment. “The importance of equality should never need explaining; when all voices are welcome and heard with equal merit, all the world will truly be a stage.”
Steering Committee Chair van Ginhoven concludes, “WAM Theatre and the Steering Committee are incredibly proud to be taking action for gender parity in the non-profit theatre by hosting the pilot Berkshire Leadership Summit. We look forward to welcoming all of these impressive women leaders to the beautiful Berkshires in October.”

ABOUT WAM THEATRE
Based in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, WAM Theatre is Where Arts and Activism Meet. The company was co-founded in 2010 by Canadian director, actor, educator, and producer Kristen van Ginhoven. WAM’s vision is to create opportunity for women and girls through the mission of theatre as philanthropy. Inspired by the book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, WAM donates a portion of the proceeds from its theatrical events to organizations that benefit women and girls. Since 2010, WAM Theatre has donated more than $32,500 to twelve nonprofit organizations and provided paid work to more than 200 theatre artists. In addition to the main stage productions and special events, WAM Theatre’s activities include a comprehensive educational outreach program and the Fresh Takes Play Reading Series.
