here, let me make jack more interesting than anything the picard writers actually tried.

imagine you live with your mother, and she's haunted by the loss of your brother. she doesn't say so, but you know how deeply it weighs on her that he just up and left her. and you're there, in the weirdest position to fill that hole left behind, not that she's trying to do that, but everything she chose to do with you is filtered through that guy you apparently only met once as a baby and don't remember. why did he visit you back when you couldn't remember him? why doesn't he do it more? if he's so powerful, why isn't he putting in the effort not to hurt your mother? why can't he get rid of the shadow he's casting on your life that you never asked for?

the key difference with his abandonment issues with picard is that it's an engineered situation. there was no solid in-character reason for bev to have cut picard out of jack's life. but she didn't choose for wesley to leave her. in that way, wesley truly did abandon them. and the fact that wesley was beverly's beloved, spoiled only child? it would be impossible to get away from that if you were her second son.

Preliminary thoughts on the second half of 3.4:

“Bob’s your uncle, Fanny’s your aunt” wtf Jack. Is this a thing people say. ETA: apparently people really do add “Fanny’s your aunt” on the end of “Bob’s your uncle”. THE MORE YOU KNOW

Oooh Jack looking at his mother while she talks about Deanna… All these ghosts that hovered around his childhood suddenly aren’t ghosts anymore!

No Raffi and… do I give a Bechdel point between Seven and the changeling? I’m gonna say no bc changeling gender unknown and also bc come the fuck on.

Sidney LaForge shoulda gotten to do more: my first thought is she should’ve been the one to think of throwing the asteroid at the ship, given that she excitedly talked about it when Vadic did it to them, but alternatively they could have also done a thing where ~oh~ people think she’s not a great pilot but when she follows her instincts in a situation with less fancy tools she’s magic! (aka give her Jack’s “wait 4 more seconds trust me” moment)

I care very much about Jack’s sad little face and his sad little cap at the bar and the feelings I am going to assume he has about Starfleet being a fucking. Simultaneous shadow over his whole life that’s the reason he doesn’t have a brother or a dad or stepdad and his mom doesn’t have friends and a bright shining thing that his mom and dad both talk about like it was something incredibly magical and that he doesn’t get to be a part of. BUT I do think all the reasons I brainstormed for Jack not wanting to meet Picard were less cliched and I’m going to continue to headcanon a whole bunch of factors. (Also it’s very hard for me to let go of Jack just being a bitch to Picard for no particular reason I preferred that. I also preferred the shining moment when “I never had [a father]!” was not the cliche bitterness at Picard not being there but instead a defiant statement that his sperm donor is irrelevant and no one is going to tell him that he has or needs a father.)

Oh and Jack saying “I know my mother didn’t hate you but” about his name, interesting. Did he assume she did at one point? More emphasis on Beverly not talking about history. But also, more Beverly being characterized in what people say about her while she’s offscreen.

Entirely insufficient Beverly. Why am I not watching a show called Crusher, about Beverly and her complicated family and her inner life? Like it’s not even that she’s generally been a character I prefer over Picard, neither of them were one of my special little guys on TNG but they were both fun, but right now they’ve set her up with way more interesting stuff going on than him and it feels like she’s not getting the time of day about it!

I don't actually hate Jack Crusher Jr. Like I think that he is, on his merits, kind of an absolute nothing-burger of a character, too nondescript to really form a strong opinion about one way or another. What I hate is (1) that the writers kept beating us over head with what an Incredibly Special Boy he is when he's just a bland Han Solo knockoff, (2) that they act like biological fatherhood is the supreme consummation of Jean-Luc Picard's legacy, and (3) that his very presence just relentlessly pulls the plot and character arcs into his orbit, with Beverly Crusher bring the primary victim.

it's funny that Michael Burnham was charged with mutiny, pleaded guilty during a court martial, and was stripped of rank with a life sentenced prison. But Jack Jr Crusher was a wanted criminal on numerous worlds under a lot of aliases. He willingly went to the Borg Queen and he assimilated thousands of people and seems responsible for potentially millions of deaths. How was he prosecuted? He was placed in an accelerated program of Starfleet. And yet people still say that Michael Burnham doesn't deal with any consequences of the choices she made, that according to the writers she's always right, she's Mary-Sue... Those very same people who want a whole show about Jack Crusher. A boring character who was never challenge by the narration.

Right! She deliberately raised him away from the shadow of all that! And she kind of instilled a “fuck Starfleet” attitude into him but I highly doubt she actually has a “fuck Starfleet” attitude so. That’s so interesting! I love that they have this healthy teamwork thing but I am very curious a) what he actually knows about the Crusher family history and b) how well that teamwork is going to hold up when they’re suddenly amongst people I suspect they’ll have very different attitudes to working with.

(Anyway if they’re not going to do anything satisfying with the Wesley of it all they should at least have one line of Jack 2 being snotty to Picard about his track record for mentoring Crushers not speaking well for itself. And he can be reasonably told he has no idea what he’s talking about and even if he did he has zero right to use Wes to score points, so it doesn’t have to go anywhere that would take effort, it could just be a one-off.)

also something so insanely compelling about bev and jack 2 having (from what we’ve seen) a very close and emotionally healthy relationship and bev raising him completely away from starfleet. presumably because starfleet fucked up her first son and their relationship so terribly that he had to disappear of the face of the universe entirely . except i guess we’re just going to ignore wesley’s existence yayyy ✌️😊💞

Notes

Everybody is all smiles for the group picture, from heroes to villains and everything in-between. Even characters who were otherwise sticks in the mud like Hank genuinely smile for the picture. Villains such as Muntz, de la Cruz, Lotso, Thunderclap and his gang, Syndrome, Evelyn, Randall, Waternoose, Hopper, Skinner, and Ercole, as much of evil psychopaths they were, are seen tenderly and respectfully singing along. Even Sid, who was a massive bully to Hannah, is seen giving her a kind brotherly embrace. Also, most movies’ main cast seem to be cramped together. Even the villains stand near their respective heroes, everyone in a healthy relationship with their families and loved ones are tenderly holding each other close, and many of the larger characters offer their bodies for the smaller ones.

Forky, Heimlich, Dory, Jack-Jack, Mater, WALL-E, and one of the triplets wave at the camera.

Dim and Wee Dingwall give the camera dopey smiles.

The egg-shaped bluebirds and the gawky bird stand perched above the entrance. The bluebirds are happy to have the gawky bird with them, a far cry from how they treated him in their short.
