Y/n pov:
I was in shuri's lab helping her make parts for T'challa's new suit when she called me over to her. "Y/n come here please" she said. "Yes princess" I said laughing. She hated when I called her that considering I was her bestfriend. "Bast y/n please stop with the formalities I beg of you" she said sighing playfully. We both laughed and sat down. "Your help is needed in jabariland. They are having trouble with their trading system and are in need of a Trade manager." Shuri said. "What will the job consist of?" I asked nervously. I didn't like talking in front of people or presenting things. I was very shy and quiet. "Nothing much all you have to do is help the Jabari tribe manage their trading business with the merchant tribe" shuri said. "Oh ok. That doesn't seem too hard" I said taking a breath of relief. "Very well your flight leaves tomorrow. Here are your communication devices in case you need me for anything." Shuri said handing me a kimoyo bead bracelet. "Thank you so much shuri." I said pulling her into a hug. We parted ways and prepared for my departure. The next morning I packed my suit cases and waited outside with shuri. Today was also the day T'challa returned home from his mission with Nakia. Suddenly, I felt a big blast of air wash over me. I looked up and noticed the royal talon fighter landing. The king-to-be and nakia stepped out of the aircraft. Shortly after, the dora MilagĂŠ came to take nakia and prepare her for the upcoming ceremony. "So suprised my sisters both came to see me before our big day" tchalla said smiling at us. I wasn't his real sister but tchalla always treated me like family. Every since me and shuri became besties at 7 years old he's always referred to me as his sister. "You wish, Im here for the emp beads I've developed an update. I'm also here to see y/n off for her departure" shuri said smartly. "Update? But it works perfectly" tchalla replied. "How many times do i have to teach you, just because something works doesn't mean that it cannot be improved." Shuri said to tchalla. "You are teaching me? What do you know?" Tchalla said as he handed the kimoyo beads to shuri. "More than you." She said while walking off to the royal talon. "I can't wait to see what kind of update you make to your ceremonial outfit" tchalla said. shuri flipped him off as she walked away to take me to the royal talon. "Shuri!" Queen Ramonda said. "Sorry mother" shuri said quickly putting her middle finger down. Shuri walked with me to the royal talon. Okoye was going to be taking me to Jabariland. "If you need anything use your kimoyo beads to contact me" shuri said pulling me into a hug. "I will. See you later shuri" I said getting into the aircraft. Shuri waved to me as the royal talon took off into the air.
*timeskip*
"Y/n we are here." Okoye said. As we landed in Jabariland, I grabbed my suitcases and prepared to go to my chamber where I'd be staying (imagine a big room but with fur couches/ furniture and big windows). "Y/n Mbaku wishes to speak with you" Kuba said leading me to him. *what could he possibly want? it is 12:00am* I thought. Kuba led me to M'baku's room. I was greeted by two female guards with both of them standing at each side of the door. "Ulapha ukuza kubona inkokeli yesizwe" (she's here to see the tribe leader) Kuba spoke in Xhosa. The two guards nodded and motioned for me to walk into the room. "Welcome to Jabariland" Mbaku said with a deep,raspy voice. He was very sleepy considering it was now 12:15am. "Thanks for the welcome" I said smiling. "I have some things I wanted to give you" Mbaku replied reaching into his closet. As he looked through the items, my eyes scanned his body. He was very tall with curly black hair, had strong muscles, and thick thighs. I find him very attractive. I was knocked out of my daydreaming by a hand waving in my face. "Hellooo y/n you there?" Mbaku asked. "Yes I'm sorry I was daydreaming." Mbaku chuckled at my slightly embarrassed face. "Here are some of the things you may need for your stay here." He said. I was given a warm blanket, documents for managing the trading business, and also a brand new wooden spear. "What's the spear for?" I asked. *i thought only warriors get those* "you are new to jabariland. It would be rude if I didn't give you anything to protect yourself now wouldn't I?" Mbaku replied. *he does have a point.* I thought. "Thank you for the gifts" I said smiling happily. "No problem nkosazana ." Mbaku said smiling happily at me.
*time skip*
As I prepared for bed, the events of the day flooded my mind and a particular word came to me. *Nkosazana I wonder what that means* I thought. I tried to go to sleep but the word kept ringing in my brain. I thought of an idea and quickly grabbed my kimoyo beads that shuri gave me. *it has an automated ai voice system that can answer any question I have. Almost like the internet but better* "Griot" I spoke into the bracelet. "Yes y/n. What May I help you with?" Griot the ai voice said. "Transalate the word Nkosazana into English and tell me the language." I replied. "The word Nkosazana means "princess" in English and comes from the Xhosa language." Griot spoke. "Thank you Griot" I said.
*princess. He called me princess* i thought.

MâBaku becoming king made no sense. From the first Black Panther movie, we know that the Jabari have basically been a separate country within Wakanda since its creation. They isolated themselves in the mountains and had a different diet, culture, and even a different religion (or at least a different primary god) than the rest of the country. And in a place as isolated as Wakanda, they were the closest thing to foreigner most people would have had a chance of interacting with.
By the time we get to MâBakuâs kingship in BP:WF, the country has had 2 kings and 1 queen die, a civil war, half their population disappeared and reappeared 5 years later, they fought off 2 Thanos-led alien invasions, and they fought a war against an underwater nation, all in the span of like 10 years max. After all of that, you would think that this would be a time for stability and a return of Bashengaâs line, but instead the guy who was basically the bogeyman a few years ago is king?????
Maybe Wakandans are just too intelligent to have xenophobia, but a change from 500 years of one family ruling to basically being ruled by a foreign king should have sparked another civil war

Dating Shuri and Riri: Shuri x Riri x Black! Queen Fem! Reader
warnings: spoilers, mentions of scars, incorrect translations (pls politely lmk if im wrong)
đ¤ You met Shuri and Riri at the same time
đ¤ Somehow you'd managed to get your kingdom roped into the entire mess of Riri and her vibranium detector
đ¤ Shuri had reached out to your for help because she knew you lived in America for some years with a distant relative until you were coronated queen of your family's kingdom
đ¤ Honestly the only reason you said yes was cuz she was fine as a mf
đ¤ Then you and her were sent to find this Riri chick and you found yourself drooling over both of them
đ¤ At first there was obvious competition between the three of you for one another's affection until all of you realized the feelings were completely mutual
đ¤ Pet names were a given: To Riri you were Baby Girl and to Shuri you were Sithandwa. While you often called Riri 'âĂfáşšĚ miâ and Shuri ĂyĂ nfáşšĚmi or interchangeably used ma/mama or babe
đ¤ You had never had one girlfriend before let alone two so things were a little complicated at times
đ¤ So many small miscommunications and petty arguments happened which made you wonder if this was the type of relationship you wanted
đ¤ But then Namor damn near killed both Shuri and Riri in front of you at the same time and you realized you couldn't imagine not having both of them
đ¤ After everything you did have to return to your kingdom which was known as the Highlands: a little farther than Jabariland
đ¤ The distance is bearable when you can take a flyer to see Shuri and when Riri goes between both the Golden City and the Highlands
đ¤ Unlike Riri and Shuri you aren't a technology genius or scientist of any kind
đ¤ The last science-ish thing you did was accidentally microwave a plate that had silver on it
đ¤ It was nearly three in the morning and you wanted a snack so you went to heat up something and the microwave literally exploded. Which triggered an entire palace lockdown and a dozen Dora Milaje to arrive in less than 15 seconds. All while you stood there in your bonnet and that ugly ass leopard print house dress that Riri swore made you look like her grandma wore when she was a kid. And all you wanted was a Hot Pocket.
đ¤ Riri and Shuri spend hours on end holed up in their labs so most nights you end up going to get them or blowing up their notifications until they cave and come to bed
đ¤ You love listening to them talk about whatever they are working on even though you don't get it
đ¤ It's not like you haven't TRIED to understand their computer-techy- big brain stuff. You tried having them teach you and it literally sounded like they were speaking Simlish in reverse to you
đ¤ But despite science and math not being your thing, you were fantastic at humanties and liberal arts related things
đ¤ So while they understood computers and things, you were busy teaching Wakandan translators
đ¤ You'd learned Yoruba as a young child which was spoken in your kingdom as well as in the nearby Jabariland. Then you'd learned Xhosa some time in grade school per your father's request. You learned English and Spanish while living in America and attending school there. Some other miscellaneous ones you picked up through other things. You jumped to the opportunity to learn Yucatec Maya to help relations with Wakanda and Talokan.
đ¤ There were times you got tongue tied as that happens with being a polyglot. But you managed to keep things straight unless on of your girlfriends was messing with you
đ¤ They knew exactly how to tease you too which didn't help when you were trying to work. Like they'd purposely enter the room wearing the most distracting fucking outfit while you're trying to meet a deadline.
đ¤ For that exact reason you made it clear as day that if they're going to pull something they better at least have clothes on. It went unsaid but they knew full and well it was because your clumsy-grandma using technology ass would accidentally turn the camera around at the worst possible moment
đ¤ Although you and your girlfriends work day and night, you all prioritize spending time with one another, especially for dates
đ¤ You three go on dates together and other times it might just be two of you. Hell you even started doing dates by yourself just for self care which Shuri also picked up and made a habit for herself
đ¤ There was a time Riri went off on her own without telling you or Shuri where she went. She left everything including her phone which only freaked you and Shuri out more. Come to find out she was trying to do a self care weekend and went back to Chicago. She didn't realize how bad she fucked up til she came back and saw how distraught you and Shuri were. Somehow you managed to keep yourself together...ish. But Shuri on the other hand was a fucking mess.
đ¤ Both you and Riri noticed that there were some parts of Shuri that had yet to heal from the pain and trauma she'd endured in a short period of time. She had her moments which you both waited out and let her deal with herself unless she asked for it. And when she did ask you were both there to love and support her in any way she needed. Mostly ends in cuddles.
đ¤ You're a blanket stealer. Riri is a kicker. Shuri is the sleep talker.
đ¤ The two of them fall asleep before you do nearly every single night without fail and sometimes you just look over their sleeping forms in absolute awe at how uniquely perfect they both are.
đ¤ The way that Riri subconsciously bites the very left corner of her bottom lip as she sleeps. How her small and calloused hands with nails trimmed down to the edge fit so perfectly in yours. The way that one scar on the bottom of her chin lines up with the one on the top of her head from jumping out of a tree when she was six. How a smile tugs on the corners of her lips when she's having a good dream...and not that kind of dream but the ones where she's genuinely happy with whoever she meets there.
đ¤ The way that Shuri's brow furrows while she sleeps until you smooth it over with your thumb. How her tattooed palm always remains face up so you can lace your fingers over hers while she sleeps. How that scar on her stomach that matches the one on her back, the one's she refuses to show you and Riri to this day, feels underneath your hand and overtop her shirt, that raises and falls with every breath she takes. And how she calms so easily when you place your hand over her cheek after hearing her let out the faintest whimper in her sleep.
đ¤ Those are your girls, only yours.

The great war II
Pairing: Shuri x fem!reader Warning: Spoilers, angst, mentions of drowning
part one
"Shuri stop this" The Queen begged her daughter to stop whatever she was planning to do "Safely escort the Queen back to Jabariland" Was all Shuri could say, ignoring her mother entirely. Two Jabari soldiers and Dora Milage escorted the Queen to an aircraft carrier. Despite her protest, Shuri could only mouth "I'm sorry mother" as Queen Ramonda disappear inside the aircraft.
Shuri fidgets a necklace you gave to her. She kissed the necklace and turned around to walk toward the lab. Nakia and Riri were trailing behind her. She was trying to recreate the heart-shaped herb. "She treated me like a sister, even if we only met yesterday, she treated me like family" Riri gently spoke once they were inside the lab. Shuri turned around to face her and smiled sadly. "She has always been that way," Shuri said and patted Riri's shoulder.
"Let us begin" Shuri announced and just like clockwork, the two of them returned to what they were previously doing.
Shuri can't help but think if this was right but for you, she was willing to kill anybody who tried to hurt you.
=====â=====â=====â=====â=====â=====â=====
When Shuri finally took the herb, she thought it wasn't working. "Who did you see?" Nakia asked. Shuri was far too angry to answer and then punched the nearest mannequin. It went straight to the wall and made a dent.
The three of them were shocked that Riri uttered "Can I get some of that?" This made Shuri and Nakia look at her and back at each other. Nakia slowly approached Shuri and hugged her tightly. 'The Black Panther lives' was all she thought.
Shuri began to make her suit, adding improvements to her past designs.
When she lifted the Black Panther helmet she whispered "All this for you, my Y/N" and tried activating her suit.
=====â=====â=====â=====â=====â=====â=====
The council was discussing possible strategies for the upcoming war. Suddenly an aircraft was hovering above them. It opened and released the Black Panther. Shuri gracefully landed at the center and then finally revealed herself.
She showed everyone who she's become and Queen Ramonda slowly approached her daughter. "My Shuri," She said and placed both her hands on either side of her daughter's cheek, caressing them softly then she hugged her tightly, remembering her son. "Show them who you are" The Queen whispered and Shuri nodded slowly.
M'baku approached her and stood in front of her, head held high. She does the same and they began to arm wrestle.
M'baku was defeated by the challenge. He clasps her hand and raises it high shouting"The Black Panther lives!" And the council chanted in celebration at their new protector.
"Namor thinks Wakanda is in a weak state, our queen almost getting killed and with our capital destroyed. He believes we have no protector, but now. Now is the time we strike" Shuri said to the elders.
An elder asked, "How, when we don't even know how to find him."
"we'll bring Namor to us" Shuri answered. Her mother wasn't interfering anymore, confident that her daughter could speak for herself.
"Here again?" asked the leader of the water tribe
ânoâ, Shuri answered "But a distant location in the sea"
Alright, M'baku said "Let's say this does work"He paused "assuming we can kill this guy, who can fly and is as strong as Hulk" HE added.
he looked around before continuing "Is murdering this guy the right solution?"
"You are calling for his death when his only crime was intimidation, "The leader of the water tribe said
"What has changed, Lord M'Baku?" Asked the leader of the mining tribe asked
"His soldiers, do not call him General or King, they call him Ku'kul'kan," M'baku said
"What is that?" Asked the water tribe leader again
"Feather serpent God" M'Baku replied which made the elder scratch his forehead "What?" M'Baku begins "You think because we live in the mountains we do not have access to books?" M'Baku asked again
"Elders" Shuri said "With your permission, I would like to talk to Lord M'baku alone," Shuri asked and all the elders, including the Queen, agreed. The Queen was the last one to exit and when she reached her daughter, she gave her a tight squeeze on her hand, a way of saying "Do what you need to do" And walked out to maybe retire in her temporary quarters.
"Namor's not finished," Shuri said "He promised to destroy the surface world. Now is our opportunity to take him, What are you afraid of?" Shuri asked angrily
"War" M'baku said "If Namor is indeed a God to his people, killing him will risk eternal war," M'baku explained
"And so what?" Shuri asked, "Wasn't my wife's life deserving of eternal war?" She added
"Of it was," M'baku wavered "Of course. she. was" And he continued. You were a big help in Wakanda. For a girl who's been through a lot, you still found it in your heart to help others. "But it is not what she have wanted for you" M'baku and Shuri held their gazes "It is not what I want for my people," M'baku said.
Shuri stood there and was deep in her thought., perhaps, rethinking about initiating war. But she recalled how both you and her mother suffered from the attack.
"You speak of my wife as if she's still here," Shuri said which cause M'baku's face to morph with confusion "Of what she wanted for me." The image of you smiling appeared in her mind "Her hopes and her dreams" And she paused. She winced about the thought of seeing you being saved by Nakia, not breathing replaying in her mind "But she's fighting for her life. In that bed, laying and fighting for her life!" Shuri shouted "Namor drowned her right in front of me" Shuri cried out. M'baku's face was saddened again "So her dreams, her goals, her hopes for me" Shuri paused to keep her emotions controlled "It doesn't exist, it doesn't matter anymore. What matters is what I want and what I want is Namor dead" She pointed at him "And you are going to help me get it" She continued and M'baku only hummed in agreement. "Good we leave in the morning" Shuri walked away, leaving M'Baku deep in his thought.
Shuri was walking to where her mother was staying. When she located it, she knocked and opened the door. Her mother was sitting beside you. She has been taking care of you since Shuri couldnât.
You were in a coma since you received the toughest blow from the attack. Shuri and her team did everything that they could to save you, but here you are, laying and fighting for your life. Shuri approached you and leaned to kiss you on your forehead. You were stable for now, no one knows when you'll wake up. "Sthandwa I'm here now" Shuri whispered "I'm the Black Panther now" She proudly said in your ear.
Her mother could only watch her daughter long for someone she truly love. She stayed beside you and caress your hand, just enough to feel you. "Are you sure about this?" Queen Ramonda asked. Shuri looked up and said " For her, for you, for all of Wakanda, I will fight for it," Shuri said. Queen Ramonda couldn't help but reach out for her daughter and embrace her "Be careful, Show them who we are" She reminded her and Shuri nodded.
=====â=====â=====â=====â=====â=====â=====
When Shuri and the others departure to fight and lure Namor into their trap. Back in Jabariland, people were managing you while the Queen said her goodbyes to her daughter. When a Jabari Woman cleaned your arm you moved and clasp her hand, which made the woman scream. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to startle you but where are we?" You asked while looking around at your surroundings "We are at Jabariland my lady" She replied.
'Why are we at Jaba- That's right Namor attacked the capital' You thought while remembering the events. When you were about to get up, the Queen arrived.
As she opened the door, she saw you sitting upward and when you saw her, you smiled genuinely. She ran to you and hugged you tight "Thank Bast your back" She said. You hugged her back. When you look around, you couldnât find your wife so you had to ask where she is "Where is Shuri, my Queen?" And when she pulled away, she downcast her head and explained to you that Shuri was at war, fighting against Namor.
You were shocked at how Shuri handled the situation. "How long was I out?" You asked the Queen "Four days" The Queen replied. You nodded. However, your mind couldn't help but spiral into a whirlwind of bad images of Shuri getting hurt or even worse, her dying. You winced at the image of her death and when the Queen saw you visibly winced, she assured you everything would be fine and all they could do is wait for their safe return, hopefully.

Sequel or second chapter to the M'baku/Reader/Namor love triangle. Like the wedding and the angst and the healing. Everyone reacting to reader and Namor starting to actually fall in love with each other.
Ah yes let's suffer together
Summary: The betrothal leads to a wedding of convenience. M'baku is still coping with what he has done. You and Namor may have a real chance.
PART ONE
Angst. Violence
Namor watched you from the other side of the room. It had surprised Namora almost as much as it had surprised himself that he had allowed you to paint a mural on the wall. He had reserved the pass time to his own whims and the history of Talokan. But he reasoned, you were now part of that history, as you would be the First Queen of Talokan.
Tomorrow was the wedding. You had no hand in planning it barring choosing the design of your dress and what jewelry you would wear. It was not in you to plan flowers, decorations, and music when the ultimate decision to marry anyone was not your own. But in the week since you returned to the Talokan caves, Namor had been a steady and strong presence by your side.
He was so different from M'baku. If the roles were reversed, M'baku, would have tried his hardest to get you to participate in the planning of the royal affair. He would have insisted on the types of music and clothing. There would have been directions on how to make all the food vegetarian. He would have tried to cheer you up by reminding you that weddings were supposed to be celebrations. But, Namor left you to do what you wished. He didn't push you to do anything. In fact he simply allowed you to do whatever soothed you. He would personally bring food and drink to your chambers, ask easy questions about how you were feeling, and would offer physical comfort but never more than a brief hug, hand hold, or kiss on the forehead unless you asked for more.
You had been mulling over everything. How quickly your life had changed over night. The wedding had been announced but you didn't know how it had been received in Wakanda. The people of Talokan has been weary but Namor had been sure to speak of your virtues in as grandiose of a manner that he could. They had been welcoming the last time Namor had taken you around Talokan again. It had not escaped you how odd it was for you to become Queen to a nation that you couldn't really live in.
"It is beautiful," Namor's voice broke you out of your thoughts as he came up beside you. He had allowed you to paint your own mural. It was of Jabariland at the height of the spring when the snow would melt except for the highest peak. There was a small depiction of you, M'baku, and his father at the entrance of the caves.
Namor admired your work and you admired him. He was a beautiful man, his skin golden, and his eyes had both youth and maturity. You thanked Hanuman that Namor was not the type to be a mean husband. He turned to you and gently patted your head, a proud look on his face. When he went to cup your cheek you leaned into it, sighing softly.
"Can you hug me, please?" You asked, eyes closed. You didn't see the softening of Namor's gaze or the affection he had in his eyes as he pulled you into his arms. You were seated and he was standing so your ear was to his chest as you wrapped your arms around his waist. His cape enveloped you, bringing you warmth and safety. His heartbeat kept a steady rhythm as you clung to him.
Namor said nothing as he held you, running one hand up and down the middle of your back. He found out quickly that you were affectionate and he didn't mind fulfilling your need in moments like this. Your guard was down and it warmed his heart to know that you trusted him, in spite of everything. It did not escape Namor that you could have and should have been angry at him for suggesting the marriage of convenience. But his only thought had been of keeping you from living a life next to M'baku, a noble king but someone who had scarred you, invisibly but deeply. At least with him, there was a chance for more, with time.
"Namor," Your voice was slightly muffled against his chest.
"Yes, in reina," Namor replied, making no move to release you from his arms.
"What does that mean? You've been calling me that since we came back." You asked innocently, your fingers gripped at the cape on his back experimentally, not sure if you were clinging too tightly.
"It means 'my queen'," Namor replied softly, not sure how you would take it.
You pulled away slightly to look up at him. He met your eyes with an apprehensive gaze. You smiled softly, "I like it,"
Namor exhaled the breath he didn't know he was holding, "I like it too."
"Are you ready for tomorrow?" You asked, leaning back into his embrace, unable to stop yourself from snuggling into his warmth.
"Yes. But I worry about you. It will be difficult," Namor replied, kissing the crown of your head.
You let the silence sink in. You had thought about your circumstances for hours at a time as the week had passed. Time was moving quickly and also not at all. Tomorrow was your wedding to a man you barely knew, who you chose over a man you had known your whole life. Yet, you couldn't find it in yourself to regret it. You chuckled to yourself, then stood up, surprising Namor.
You gazed at the handsome King, who should intimidate you, even scare you after everything he had done. But you felt safe, you felt cared for. Even if it was not love, not yet, it was close. You felt yourself smile at him, "You promised to take care of me. To make me happy. To love me, while I learned to love you."
Namor tilted his head, a look of amusement on his face, "Yes, in reina. I do not take this lightly. I never took a queen in all my years ruling Talokan. I never felt it necessary nor did I feel compelled to, until now."
"You are cruel and ruthless, Namor. I know this. But I also know that you are kind, protective, and do not act without reason. I trust you, more than I should trust anyone that I have known for such a short time. I don't fear what tomorrow brings because I trust you, wholeheartedly," You cupped the king's cheek. The softness in his eyes at this moment could melt the coldest heart. "May I kiss you, in ajawo?"
Namor's brow raised at the use of his language, and a smile spread across his face. His hand found yours on his cheek and clutched them as you leaned in to kiss him. It was chaste, earnest, and full of promises.
~~~
M'baku watched from high up in the council room as the city prepared for the grand celebration that would take place tomorrow. Wakandans and Talokanil alike were setting decorations, preparing a bounty of food, and practicing exhibitions to perform for the new royalty. He wished to drown himself in a barrel of wine or a bottle of whiskey but shook his head. The Jabari King had refused to partake in any alcohol since that fateful night.
He had stopped weeping over what had happened, although the guilt remained. A deserved brow beating from Okoye and several pep talks from Shuri had distracted him from falling into a deep depression. He couldn't even find it in himself to hate K'uk'ulkan. The man reacted in the exact way he would have if he had stumbled upon the same sight.
M'baku dreaded the next day. He dreaded that, without any blood family to be found for you, that he would be the one to give his blessing. The woman he loved would walk from his arms into another man's and it was his own doing. The great Jabari warrior was also worried beyond measure. He admired the feathered serpent god and the kingdom he built, but he knew nothing but cruelty from the man.
Except on that day, of course, the day of the treaty and alliance. He had been gracious, kind, and friendly. M'baku had found an easy comradery with the sea king until it was obvious that you favored the other man. Then his feelings had soured. But he trusted your judgement as much as it broke his heart. He knew you would not have chosen someone that you would not be able to tolerate. From Okoye's words, there may have already been a spark manifesting that first day.
"M'baku, how are you?" The gentle voice of Shuri broke his brooding.
He sighed heavily, turning to the Princess, "As well as can be expected. At least we can say with confidence that I did not completely destroy this alliance before it truly started."
M'baku scoffed at his own comment, sitting heavily on the throne. Shuri approached him slowly, "She has sent a message, asking if you would like to speak with her before tomorrow. She wants you to give the blessing, but only if you wish."
There it was, the expectation of him as your only kin. His father was dead and no other Jabari was close to you in the way that he was. He stared hard at the ground. He would need to see you once before then, if only to release whatever feelings he had pre-emptively, so he would not lose himself in front of the kingdom when he blessed the union. "Tell her to come. She is right, we have things to discuss."
~~~
"I am not sure I should go in there with you," Namor stood with you at the doors to the council room.
"I need you with me, in ajawo," You replied, already knowing that using his language would touch him.
Namor sighed as he turned to you, cupping your face in his hands, "In reina, this should be a private conversation. You have not seen him since the betrothal was decided on. You left angry and he was left guilty and devastated. I do not want to intrude on matters of the family."
"You are my family now, Namor. K'uk'ulkan," You grasped his hands in your own, staring into his eyes hoping he would see your desperation. You had thought you were ready to return to the palace, but your anxiety had skyrocketed the moment you entered the familiar halls. "I need you with me, please."
"Do you still fear him?" The Talokan King asked, stepping even closer to you, his thumbs caressing your cheeks.
"I do not, but my body remembers. It rejects this place," A tear escaped and Namor brushed it away. You had never thought you would abhor the Wakandan royal palace but trauma was powerful.
Namor leaned in and kissed your forehead. He stepped back and took your hand before waving his hand for the two Dora soldiers to open the doors for you both. When you entered you found not only M'baku there but also Shuri. A surprise for everyone it seemed.
"K'uk'ulkan," M'baku greeted the other king, standing and nodding his head at him.
"King M'baku," Namor replied with a similar nod. He addressed Shuri, "Princess, we did not know you would also be in attendance."
"I could say the same about you, Namor," Shuri's voice wasn't outright aggressive but still held some steal. There seemed to be no love lost between the former enemies.
"I asked him to be here," You defended him, still gripping his hand. You turned to your childhood friend. "Baku, how are you?"
"I have been better. I trust that he has kept you well," M'baku addressed you, ignoring the other two in the room as best he could. You looked healthy but tired. There was a tension in your body that had never used to be there when you were in his presence and it made his heart clench.
"Yes. I am well, we both are," You glanced at Namor before releasing his hand. He stepped back, not wanting to intrude. When you glanced back at M'baku you noticed the pain in his eyes and how they lingered on your previously joined hands. The tension in the air was suffocating and you knew that it would not wane with the other two people in the room. "Namor, Shuri, can you leave us to talk?"
"Are you sure?" M'baku asked, beating Namor to the question.
"Yes. Namor, you were right this is a matter of family. We need to speak alone," you turned to Namor and Shuri. Namor nodded and turned towards the doors that sprang open. Shuri hesitated but you shook your head. "Please, Shuri."
She sighed then left the room, following the Talokan King. The doors closed behind her and you stood before your childhood friend, your brother in all but blood. Both of you hesitated, not sure how to begin what would be an emotional confrontation. You both tried to speak at the same time and then simultaneously gestured for the other to go first. You both smiled slightly.
"You do not have to give the blessing, we can go without it," You began.
"I will do it. My father would have wanted it that way. It is also asking for K'uk'ulkan's word that although he is taking you from us, he will not forget your heritage and what this marriage means. It is tradition," M'baku insisted. "It will look good to the people. Outside of those involved, a few of the Dora, and the council, no one knows what took place that night. We are framing my bringing you to the table during the treaty celebration as our introduction of a marriage alliance. It will look like a decisive diplomatic decision. It will be celebrated as such."
You listened intently, understanding that appearances had to be kept, and honor maintained. He was waiting for you to say something but your mouth ran dry. M'baku had truly taken on the mantle of King and was doing a fine job despite the emotional turmoil.
You took a deep breath and stepped forward. You willed the tension to leave your body and the anxious shaking to stop. You gently took his much larger hands in yours, "Baku, I forgive you. I want you to let go of any guilt so that tomorrow we can really celebrate. Father would have wanted that."
The Jabari King gripped your hands firmly. He shook his head, sadness bearing down on his large form. "I never wanted this. Even when you left I knew you left because of my growing feelings. I didn't ask you to stay then because I didn't want to force you. I didn't want to ask you for something you couldn't give. I never thought I would try and take from you."
"You were drunk and asleep," you cupped his cheek, making him meet your gaze. The proximity had your heart racing. "I know you M'baku. I know you better than anyone and you would never hurt me on purpose. So I ask, that tomorrow, you be happy for me. It is sudden, and it comes from a sad incident, but I truly believe I can be happy with him. He has only shown me compassion in this short time. Even when I have ignored him or lashed out. He has only been gracious."
"I did not expect him to offer to marry you," M'baku revealed, his hand came up to hold the one you had on his cheek. "I did not expect you to accept either."
You hesitated, feeling the warmth of him as he leant into your touch. The familiar smell of him surrounded you. The grip he had on your hand felt so normal but also too tight. Your breathing sped up and you were overcome with the memories of his weight on you. You gasped, and shoved him away.
M'baku was shocked then his face crumbled with shame. You willed yourself to breathe normally, hugging yourself, "Baku, I'm sorry."
He coughed, stopping the sob that fought to rip through his chest. The King stepped back, giving you room, lifting a hand to stop you when you tried to step forward. "You made the right decision. I would have hated to see you fear me every day. Don't apologize."
"One day, I promise I will be able to hug you again. Like old times. We will spar in the snow, and I will tackle you and wrestle like we used to," You put on a brave face, the memories of that night still playing in the back of your mind.
"Go, I'm sure K'uk'ulkan will want you well rested for tomorrow. You must show him what a beautiful bride Wakanda has brought to him," M'baku tried to joke.
You were still shaky as you turned to the doors. When they opened, Shuri entered first. She scanned your shaking form with concern but you shook your head, walking past her. Shuri watched as you walked straight into Namor's waiting arms, and buried your face into his neck. He clutched you and whispered something in your ear that made you nod. The Talokan King looked up, nodded at Shuri and glanced at M'baku, before he turned with you and heading down the hall. Shuri watched until you and Namor were out of sight before she commanded the door closed and approached the Wakandan King.
"What happened?" She asked, taking in the stoic king who was staring up at a point on the ceiling.
"I will give my blessing tomorrow and watch her marry K'uk'ulkan." He replied, running heavy hand across his face before meeting the Princess' piercing gaze, "She will be happier with him than she can ever be with me. Today proved that."
Shuri was not at all convinced that M'baku believed what he said but she only nodded, worrying about her friends.
~~~
Namor turned at the sound of your approach. He took in your wedding clothes, a mix of Jabari furs, though lighter than tradition, and flowing Talokanil fabric. You were draped in jewelry and your hair intricately braided. He approached you with a smile, taking your hand a laying a kiss upon your knuckles, "You look beautiful, in reina."
"You look beautiful too," You replied. His skin matched the stunning gold that graced his body. He wore a cape that covered half his chest and atop his head was the grand headdress he had worn at the celebration of the alliance.
"Are you ready?" He asked, entwining your hand in his as he led you to the double doors.
You nodded, making the jewelry in your hair jingle. You stopped and looked up at the handsome visage of the king, feeling surprisingly giddy. You could hear the music and the chatter of the people. Both countries had come together to celebrate a prosperous union and the excitement was infectious.
"Namor, K'uk'ulkan," You addressed your betrothed who smiled down at you, also being sucked in by the jovial atmosphere permeating through the doors of the grand hall. "I am happy to be marrying you. In spite of everything that has led to this moment, I look forward to being your wife and Queen."
The King smiled broadly as he cupped your cheek, "I promise, in reina, your happiness will be mine to protect from now on."
With those words he took your hand and pushed open the doors. You walked together down the procession line, regal and majestic towards the dais that looked over the crowd. There were cheers and music as you presented yourselves before your people. You noticed that the entire Jabari tribe was in attendance, your fellow warriors coming to see you off. The Talokanil were also present, dressed in light clothing that shined with the gleam of vibranium threading. There was singing and dancing as you made your way through the crowd.
Once you had made it to the dais, there stood a Talokanil shaman and a council member to officiate. The crowd died down at their command. Before you lay a table with representations of the four elements, a tradition of Mayan weddings. The grand headdress was removed from Namor's head as incense was lit and waved around the expanse of the space.
The council member spoke first, "We now ask for a member of the Jabari tribe to witness and bless this union for the prosperity of the alliance between Wakanda and Talokan. To the happiness of the daughter of Jabariland and the first son of Talokan."
M'baku stepped forth. His expression was schooled but softened when you met his gaze and smiled at him. "It is with great pleasure, that I, M'baku, King of Wakanda and Son of the Jabari, bless this union and wish the greatest happiness to this daughter of the Jabari and my dearest friend. To K'uk'ulkan I ask that this union remain a symbol of not only our alliance but of your promises to treat this treasured woman as precious and as much one of yours as she is ours. Let our ancestors also bless this union and bring peace and happiness to these lands."
Cheers exploded as he draped you and then Namor each in a gold necklace. Namor nodded and shook M'baku's hand. They exchanged words that you could not hear over the sounds of jubilation. When M'baku stepped back, the Wakandan council man moved forward. He compelled you both to repeat after him as he expressed traditional vows of love and loyalty. You felt your heart swell with each devotion. Hearing Namor repeat the words as he gripped your hand tightly solidified that you had made the right choice. The way the Talokanil King looked at you as he slid the ring onto your finger and you did the same to him spoke volumes of how much he already cared for you. There were cheers from the Wakandans as the first half of the ceremony ended.
The shaman of Talokan took his turn. He spoke in Yucatec Mayan with Griot blasting a translation from speakers embedded in the halls.
"We stand before the Mother Earth and the Cosmos to bring this union together in their spiritual blessing," The shaman lit a candle in the middle of the table. Namor gestured for you to stand at one side of the table as he stood at the other. You looked upon the flowers, fruits, seeds, and candle on the table before looking back into the eyes of the king. His gaze was warm then it changed. Suddenly steely and full of rage, but it wasn't directed at you.
In an instant, Namor stepped around the table and caught the spear, inches before it impaled your chest. He whipped around and threw it full bodied in the direction it came. The crowd was shocked into silence as they witnessed the spear pierce the chest of a Talokanil woman and lodged itself into the ground, pinning her so she could only stand impaled.
"What is the meaning of this?" M'baku yelled, stepping forward.
Namor turned, eyes full of rage, "Stay with her."
The command was harsh and the look in the serpent god's eyes reminded the Wakandan King of the barely survived punch to his chest during the battle of Wakanda. He placed himself to block you partially with his body as Namor flew to the end of the procession. Namora and Attuma appeared from the crowd, flanking him as he landed before the impaled warrior. Namor's voice echoed in Yucatec Mayan that Griot continued to translate.
"Child, what is the meaning of this? You ask for your death by attacking my Queen on our wedding day. You insult the people of Talokan and Wakanda with this dangerous farce!" His voice was barely controlled rage as he came up to the face of the Talokanil woman.
She spat at the king despite her mask, knowing the gesture would get her meaning across, "You insult us K'uk'ulkan! You insult the very kingdom you say you protect by choosing a surface dweller as our Queen."
"Our ancestors once sacrificed humans to the gods in exchange for blessings. I think it is time that we do that again," Namor nodded at Attuma and Namora who moved to carry the offending woman. Pulling her form from the spear that was still pierced through her made her screams echo in the spacious hall. Namor headed back towards the dais as the woman screamed and fought.
"You will bring us to our ends! I am not the only one who sees how you fall from grace K'uk'ulkan!" She continued to berate the king.
When Namor reached the table again he gruffly told M'baku to step back to his place. Namor took your hands and looked at you, "No one will harm you."
You were astonished at the display of violence and cruelty. But the logically part of you knew that this was the man who had killed Queen Ramonda without a hint of remorse. This was the man that had attempted to take Wakanda under his rule. This was just another part of the man you were to marry. He sighed, and you saw his shoulders fall slightly, and his eyes soften. Namor returned to the gentle king that you knew him as, "Forgive me, in reina. But I must make an example of her."
"In ajawo," You spoke softly, "she really meant to kill me?"
"Yes," Namor confirmed before his eyes hardened again and he turned from you. Namora and Attuma held the woman with her her back on the table and her legs draped over the edge, a trail of blood had followed them. She still fought against her captors, even turning to spit in your directions. Blood was pooling in her breather as she glared at you.
"You will never be the true Queen of Talokan," She raged at you.
Namor had taken a dagger from the Shaman. You could see the Wakandans watching in horror. The Dora Milaje tried to control the crowd, until someone screamed, "Spare her, this is not the way!"
M'baku was the one to address the crowd, cooing as the rest of the Jabari joined him until the people were silent. "This woman has committed an act of treason not only to Talokan but to Wakanda! She offends not only King K'uk'ulkan but Jabariland as well! Her penalty from the Wakanda of old would be banishment. But the Wakanda under my rule sentences her to death. She however is not one of ours to lay charges against. She belongs to Talokan and if they wish to sacrifice her as penance, if they wish to offer her life to their gods, then I allow it."
Namor was surprised by the backing of M'baku. When their gazes met an understanding formed. This was a personal vengeance for an attack on the woman they both cherished. M'baku returned to his place, ignoring the appalled stare from Shuri and Okoye who stood off to the side. There were murmurs in the crowds of Wakandans and Talokanil alike.
Namor lifted the ceremonial dagger, "With this sacrifice we pay back, in part, our debt to the gods and all their blessings. We spill this blood as an act of union between lands and people. Let the gods of the world answer our calls for blessings. With this sacrifice we invoke the powers that bring us into this world and take us from it."
With a powerful swing, Namor shoved the dagger deep into the chest of the Talokanil warrior, twisted it and then let her blood flow from the table and onto the floor.
The Shaman, unfazed, blew the conch shell and continued the ceremony, "We call upon the cardinal powers of the elements; fire, earth, water, and air, to purify this sacrifice and guide this partnership through light and love."
The Shaman moved forward and took your hand and Namor's placing them together and tying them with a red woven strip of cloth. He guided your hands to pour a pitcher of water over the table, over the seeds, flowers, fruit, and blood. "Let us now rejoice in this union and welcome the Queen of Talokan!"
There was a moment of hesitation before the Talokanil cheered riotously, followed by the more apprehensive Wakandans. Namor pulled you close to him, cupped your cheeks, and kissed you. You could do nothing but kiss him back as your mind reeled.
....
Chapter 6:Â
Jabariland
A familiar icy wind brushed against MâBakuâs arms as he trekked to his throne room for a meeting with the Jabari council; Lady Ifechi and Akunna; heads of two of the Jabariâs eldest families. This meeting was one that had weighed heavy on his mind. When he first met you, he never had any intentions to let it draw out this far; to allow your courtship to gain meaning. Yet, as time wore on, he found that when he left you behind in the Americas, he had left a piece of himself with you. To feel as if something was missing in his homeland was a foreign notion. He chided himself at the idea of it, a sense of betrayal to his people creeping up his back. But there was no shaking this warmth that you had stirred within him. You had done what countless women had failed to achieve in the past. Capturing the Great Gorillaâs heart and mind was a feat that you accomplished gracefully. Now, he had to approach the council with this fact.Â
Hanging birch logs illuminated by lights greeted MâBaku as he entered the throne room. Jabari warriors nodded their heads toward him as he passed. He sunk down into his masterfully crafted throne and assumed his usual widened position. MâBele, one of his most trusted friends, soon took his place beside him as the council funneled into the room.Â
âThank you all for meeting on such short notice. I have made a decision regarding Ochukoâs treason and treachery. Banishment seems a worthy punishment,â MâBaku declared.
âYou would let this irhamncwa live after he injured one of our people and attempted to kill many others in your absence?â Lady Ifechi had been beside herself ever since MâBaku formed an alliance with King TâChalla. She didnât approve of the time he spent away from Jabariland as an ambassador for a king who only âwelcomed the Jabari in when they needed our helpâ sheâd said.Â
âI will not send him to the ancestors before his time. It is their decision when he has served his purpose on this plane. Akunna?â
âThough trying as it might have been to witness a betrayal on our own land,â Akunna uttered, shutting his eyes at the thought of what could have been. âTaking a Jabari life would not sit well with our people.âÂ
âSo it is settled. Ochuko will live the remainder of his days past the borderlands of Wakanda. I have already spoken with the Border tribe leader and he will put him to work. In my future absences, MâBele will step in as second in command,â MâBaku noted.Â
Ifechi nodded in agreement knowing that she was outnumbered. When it came to the safety of his people, it was hard for anyone to speak against him. Though he was revered as their leader and chief, the council would always contribute to the finality of each decision; which only made him all the more apprehensive. Puffing out his chest, MâBaku gathered himself in preparation.
âBefore we end, I have a proposition of sorts. I have spent too long guiding our people with no one by my side. I would like to take on an inkosikazi.âÂ
âLord MâBaku, what a wonderful sentiment. Our people need a chieftess and now is the perfect time to do it. To produce heirs to lead the Jabari. Glory to Hanuman.â Lady Ifechi waxed poetically, as she had been waiting for him to bring this up for quite some time. Though never to his face, she never failed to âmentionâ MâBakuâs need for a wife and that he wasnât getting any younger.
âGlory to Hanuman,â the room erupted.
âOne of our fishermanâs daughters, Imani, is of age. She would make a great chieftess,â Akunna informed the council.Â
âIâm sure Imani is beautiful but Iâve already found someone. While Iâve been away, I have been courting a black American woman and I wish to take her as my wife.âÂ
MâBaku watched as the smiles dropped around him. His brows furrowed as he watched Ifechi and Akunna's faces contort with disapproval.Â
âIâm sorry but I must vote against this request. Black Americans have brought no good to this country. Look what happened when they let a child without a tribe sit on the throne in the Golden City,â Lady Ifechi reproached.Â
âCouncil, if I may, Lord MâBaku has given so much to us as a people. He has always had our best interest at hand. He has led us in battle and in life. MâBaku sacrificed his pride so that he could provide for our people. I begâo, when will enough be enough? How much more will you have him sacrifice?âÂ
MâBeleâs query to the council was met with silence. Rarely did he talk out of turn but he knew what needed to be said at this moment. MâBaku quietly thanked him for his words and returned his attention to his council. Tightening his fingers around his staff, he watched Ifechi and Akunna gather their answers.Â
âWe cannot allow it. We must learn from the Golden Tribeâs mistakes. The border tribe has still yet to recover their forces. The generalâs own husband taking up a sword against her over a black American with no past and no future. Is this what you wish for our people?â Akunnaâs question echoed in the room and MâBaku sat defeated. How could the council ask him to choose between his heart and his people? He simply grunted in response and the council took it as his answer. They knew what kind of leader he was. His people would always come first, even if it meant sacrificing his happiness.Â
âIt is resolved. If you want a good wife and a chieftess for our people, we will find one here. One of our own,â Lady Ifechi says before leaving the throne room, with Akunna in tow.Â
Disappointment swelled in MâBakuâs chest. This answer was the one he expected but not the one he hoped for. The Jabari had come so far in their joining of the other tribes. He himself sat on the elder council in The Golden City and provided efforts to ensure the future of all the tribes represented there. And yet it was not enough for some Jabari. Just as he had refused the need for technological advancements in the past, some of his people hesitated in walking into this new future of acceptance. His council included.Â
MâBaku rose from his throne and rolled his shoulders back, trying to elude the building grief within him. He turned to face MâBele and placed his hand on the warriorâs armored shoulder.Â
âI will be gone for a week, please ensure that no mischief arises. Though you are in command, try not to imbibe on the job,â he joked half-heartedly. MâBele chuckled but saw through his friendâs need to lighten the unfortunate situation.Â
âMy comfort for you, umntakwethu. I know you care for this woman deeply.â MâBele bowed his head in shared sadness and MâBaku patted his shoulder once more.
âUnfortunately, it is much more than that. I thank you for your words of comfort, my friend. I must go prepare for my trip.âÂ
The Ritz Carlton, Los Angeles
Megan was rolling pieces of prosciutto for the charcuterie board while you and her chatted. You groaned, standing on your toes to grab three wine glasses from the cabinet. You, Megan, and Shellee had planned a girls' night to catch up but Shellee was late as usual. Being an entrepreneur with singular control over 3 luxury nail salon locations couldnât be easy and you knew that. But you couldnât ignore that it was taking a toll on your friendship with her. Check-ins were sparse even during your two-month âbreakâ from sugaring. And in the times that she did call, she was hard to talk to. She was overly critical about your choices in life and was iffy at best when it came to pursuing art. Your situation had afforded you all this freedom and Shelle was always busy. You simply chalked it up to being a product of adulthood and tried not to dwell on it too much.Â
âSo whenâs MâBaku coming back? Is everything alright between yâall?âÂ
âThings are good. We revised our contract. Heâs coming back tomorrow night and then weâre leaving for a week,â you answered, walking over to the living room and placing the glasses next to a bottle of Veuve Clicquot.Â
âNot you getting flewed out right after punishment sex. Whereâs sugar daddy taking you this time?â
You smiled as the butterflies in your tummy stirred at the thought of going away with MâBaku again. It had been a while and you couldnât wait to make up for the lost time. Megan watched as you melted and you both erupted in giggles.Â
âIâm not really sure, Meg,â you beamed, placing a few pillows on the floor, âwhen we first made our little agreement, he asked me to make a list of places I wanted to visit. He just chooses from there.âÂ
âThatâs cute as hell. He must really like you, O.â Shrugging your shoulders, you helped her bring the food over to the coffee table.Â
âI donât know about alladat. Heâs just fulfilling his end of the deal.âÂ
âOh please,â Megan dismissed your minimization. âItâs giving Pretty Woman.âÂ
A knock at the door interrupted you and Meganâs gushing session. Standing, you pulled your pajama shirt down and sighed.Â
âOkay, donât mention you know who when she comes in. You already know what she be on,â you warned before heading to open the door.Â
2 Hours and a Few Drinks Later
Shellee had brought a few pre-rolls to relax with you and Meg and it didnât take long for the stress of the day to escape her. All three of you ate, laughed, and drank. And for a moment, through the haze of smoke and champagne bubbles, it felt like old times.Â
You leaned your back against the newly clean couch and gave into the heaviness of your eyelids. Flashbacks of why the sofa needed to be cleaned came with each blink. His hands squeezing and kneading your hips and thighs; the gushing noises your body made every time he stroked in and out of you; his deep, rough voice singing your praises in your ear. Both your mind and your body ached for him. Getting lost in your thoughts was far too easy when it came to him.
âItâs so nice to finally be with yâall. This place is gorgeous, Oshun,â Shellee complimented, raising her glass to you. Her compliment drove you back to the present and you clasped your legs together in an attempt to distinguish the fire MâBaku continued to set even in his absence.
âIt really is gorgeous, which is why Iâve been meaning to ask; can I use your loft while youâre gone?â Both you and Shellee looked at Megan in confusion.Â
âMeg, you have a whole ass apartment and a man,â you chuckled, âwhy you wanna stay here?â
âWait, youâre leaving somewhere, O?âÂ
âHer man is taking her on a trip, she wonât know where till tomorrow,â Megan spilled before taking another puff of the indica pre-roll. You hit her stomach and Megan coughed wildly, realizing what she had just said. Â
âYou have a whole boyfriend, and you didnât tell me,â Shellee questioned. Both you and Megan looked at each other and back at Shellee.Â
âNot exactly. Itâs more of a situationship.âÂ
âA situationship and heâs flying you out places? Nah, be fucking foreal. You got this new loft, and new clothes, you handed me silk pajamas when I walked in. What is going on, O?â You sat with Shelleeâs inquiry for a moment to gather your thoughts and took a long drag from your blunt. If she really wanted to know, youâd tell her.
âYou remember when Meg and I went to DC like 5 months ago? I met someone that weekend and we hit it off. But he doesnât have the freedom to have a normal relationship so we made a sugaring contract that works for both of us and-,â you were cut off by the sound of Shellee chuckling. Your face dropped and you rolled your eyes at her.Â
âWhy are you laughing, Shellee? You asked her to tell you,â Megan said, coming to your defense.Â
âIâm sorry, I just... I thought you were smarter than this, O?â
âSmarter than what? You always so damn judgemental,â you scoffed.
âOshun, what do you know about this man, really? What does he do for work? Where does he live full-time? Who is he around when youâre not with him?â You leaned back into your pillows, looking down into your glass. You couldnât answer any of her questions.Â
âYou donât even know anything about him. You canât honestly think that this is going to last. I hope youâre at least saving whatever allowance heâs giving you. Maybe then you can actually do something with your life instead of scribbling and being some manâs pet.â Her words shot through you and blinked wildly at her.Â
âOh, so Iâm a pet now? This is exactly why I donât be telling you shit. Excuse me if I donât have my master's in business or manage multiple locations. Not everyone wants to live your #girlboss life, damn,â you shut your eyes and took a deep breath, trying your best to keep calm.Â
âAnd what, being easily expendable is better? This canât be all that you really want, O. What do YOU want?âÂ
âI want him! I want to paint and fuck and be happy with him and be able to breathe in this claustrophobic, capitalistic, bullshit-ass country. Is that so bad,â you yelled back, tears threatening to roll down your cheeks. Shellee immediately regretted her words as soon as she saw you cry. She knew she could be harsh but seeing you visibly hurt was eye-opening.Â
âShells, letâs just table it for now,â Megan muttered while rubbing your shoulders and telling you to take a couple of deep breaths.Â
All the previous comfort had been sucked out of the room like a vacuum. What started out as a relaxing girls' night quickly went left and Shellee knew she had caused this. It wouldnât be the first time her words had brought down the vibe. You thought youâd be used to it by now. But seeing your position with MâBaku through Shelleeâs perspective took her over the edge. It was too much for you to bear.Â
âListen, I just want more for her. Iâve sugared in the past, I know how this ends. He got me through undergrad and right as I began to fall in love with him, I found out he had a whole wife and kids. He supported me for 3 and a half years and fell for him like a fool. Not realizing I was just the hired help,â Shellee sighed. She tucked a loose loc behind her ear and wiped a sole tear from her cheek.Â
âI know I canât stop you from making your own decisions. And Iâm sorry, I shouldnât have come at you like that. But just be careful. Try not to fall in love just because heâs showering you with lofts and trips. He could take it away at any time.âÂ
âToo late,â you chimed.Â
âMâBaku wouldnât do that, Shells. Iâve seen the way he looks at O. Itâs not just a contract like they say it is. Even if it took til now for Oshun to admit it.â Megan had pointed out your lackluster confession and you groaned in despair.Â
âSo everybody knows about this MâBaku except for me? The fuck is-â You and Meganâs pointed glares made her stop talking and she put her hands up in defeat. Shellee would just have to meet MâBaku at a later date. She grabbed your free hand and rubbed her thumb across your knuckles.Â
âI love you, O. And if this is what you want, Iâll support you. Regardless of the outcome, Iâll be here,â Shellee said before placing a kiss on your cheek. You silently thanked her and leaned into your two friendâs embrace.Â
âSo can I show Shellee the painting that you did of MâBaku? He really is fine as hell, you gotta let me show her.â Meganâs request disrupted your group hug and shook your head in disapproval, chuckling.
âOh my god, Meg. Be serious for once!â
âNah, if heâs as fine as she says he is, Iâma need to see. To the painting!â Shellee and Megan âwooedâ as they left your embrace to go to your painting room. You shook your head and laughed at your friendsâ antics. A chime drew your attention to the phone sitting in your lap. Unlocking your phone, you saw a new text from MâBaku.
I cannot wait to see you tomorrow. Time away from you is never easy - M
I canât wait to see you either. - O
đđŁđ´đŚđ´đ´đŞđ°đŻ đˇđ´ đđ°đˇđŚ đđđ (đżđđđ đ
đđđđ)
But You Promised
Word Count: 2.9k Warnings: Okoye needs a hug and then to be punched in the face, Ramonda is a bully but we love her, MISUNDERSTANDINGS, please don't fight me, I love you đ
Okoye closed the door, sighing as she leaned her head against it. The silence gave Okoye room to think. She understood Y/N's feeling of failure.Â
She failed to protect the princess from being kidnapped, she failed Ramonda, She failed Shuri, and she failed T'Challa. The guilt of letting Shuri get kidnapped when she promised T'Challa she'd protect her. When she told Ramonda Shuri would be safe with her.
She understood Y/N just needed comfort. Understood that no matter how much you told her she didn't fail, it wouldn't stop her inner storm of guilt. So Okoye gave Y/N the comfort she wished someone gave her. Finding clothes for her to change into, provided comforting words, and though she wasn't the best singer, she hummed a song for Y/N to fall asleep.
Now she faced the struggle of whether she should tell Shuri or Ramonda or keep Y/N's struggle to herself. She shouldn't even be in the palace, but something told her to stay, and she's glad she did.
"They told me you'd be in this thing," M'Baku spoke, looking around the lab. He sighed softly when she remained silent.
"You should be with your mother or your woman friend," M'Baku said, staring at the back of Shuri's head. "Not here, burying yourself in your technology."
"Why are you here?" She demanded, turning to stare into his eyes. M'Baku stills, looking to the side in thought before looking back at her. His brows furrow in thought as he speaks, "I promised your brother I would provide you with consolation and protection, but today, I require advice."
"The tribal elders have approached me with a proposition. They wish to evacuate the city and set up camp in Jabariland."
Shuri scoffs, tilting her head away from him as she speaks quietly, "Now you are keen to hear from a child who scoffs at tradition?"
"The world has taken near too much from you for you to still be considered a child," M'Baku said, his eyes trailing her face as she stood void of emotion.
"The elders are desperate, and the city is vulnerable. If you are to provide for them, they will be in great debt to you," Shuri stated, mindlessly fiddling with the necklace given to her by Y/N.
"And what of your heart?" M'Baku asked as he patted his chest. "Which way is your heart leaning?"
"You asked for advice, and I gave it to you," Shuri said, turning to the weapon on her desk.
"The blue woman, what is she?" M'Baku asked, tilting his head in thought.
Shuri's eyes soften at the mention of Y/N, and she smiled. Her hands slowed their movement in piecing the arrow together. "Her name is Y/N, she is a Nymerian, remember that."
M'Baku nodded, shifting slightly before hurrying out of the lab. Shuri sighed softly, looking away in thought. He was right.
She should check on her girl.
She's asleep, always tall, but at the moment. Y/N is small, curled into a ball with the blanket covering half her face. Her hand is uncovered, next to her head twitching. Shuri smiles softly as she runs a finger down Y/N's cheek. She giggles softly as the Nymerian leans into her touch.Â
"You'll be okay, Sthandwa," She whispers, leaning down to kiss her forehead. Y/N shifted, and Shuri slowly backed away, careful not to wake her. Before the princess could blink, she was yanked back onto the bed. An arm curled tightly around her waist, pulling her into Y/N's body.Â
"Stay," Y/N murmured, nuzzling into the back of Shuri's neck with a deep sigh.Â
Different piles of metal scraps were placed all over Riri and Y/N's section of the lab. On a holographic screen next to Riri was an image of the final product of her IronHeart suit. She had three notebooks, two filled with drafts and ideas, while the third had final drafts.Â
A breathy chuckle to her right draws her attention to her approaching best friend. The Nymerian wears a white corset top, black pants, silver jewelry, and blue Nikes.Â
"Sure you can build this? I ain't gon be babysitting you this time," Y/N teases, grinning at the scoff from the shorter girl.
"You weren't babysitting me. You was helping me. There's a difference," Riri lectured, jokingly smacking Y/N's arm. Turning to the outline in front of them, she sighs. "It'll be better, and we'll get that feather-footed bitch."
They share a laugh, it's comfortable, and for a moment, Y/N can imagine it's just them in the garage goofing around. Reality sets in when a voice breaks through her thoughts.Â
"Y/N, Queen Ramonda requests your presence in the royal garden."
"Thanks, Griot," Y/N sighs, looking to the side and directly into Shuri's eyes from across the lab. There's a question floating around them, but the Nymerian ignores it.
"You pulling both the daughter and the mother. You whore!" Riri whispers, shoving her elbow into Y/N's hip effectively breaking her from the stare-off with Shuri.
"I'm not pulling shit, you Micro Chihuahua," Y/N glared, quickly jumping away from Riri's fist and almost tripping over a pile of gears. She laughs as she descends the stairs. Riri's shouts of complaint echo behind her as she leaves. It stops as soon as the elevator doors shut.
Only after wandering around, nodding at a few Doras who give you questioning looks, and almost tripping over nothing; do you reach out to Griot for guidance to the royal garden. Turns out you just needed to take a left, and it was the only door in the hallway.
There are no lights except the sun shining through the glass ceiling. Rows upon rows of flower bushes cover the floor. There are trails between the bushes to guide people so they don't step on roots or other plants. The back wall is made of glass, letting more sunlight pour in. Two Doras stand near the door, and Ramonda stands facing the back wall.
Seeing her standing there, Y/N understood why her grandmother had a thing for Ramonda. She stood tall and strong, took her job seriously, and how she interacted and got along with everyone was admirable.Â
"Roses are my favorite," Ramonda explained as she leaned to inhale the scent of a freshly bloomed rose. Your feet carried you to her form, and she turned with a soft smirk.
"Hello, Taraji," Her voice is warm and teasing, her eyes laced with mischief, and you panic. She really is a mother, isn't she?
"If you want something, ask for it," Ramonda states as she pinches your ear. She grins when you screech in discomfort, your hand coming up to tap at her hand.
"Let me go, woman!" You shout, and you're sure you can hear a chuckle from one of the Dora Milaje. Your arms flail as you try to back away from her grip, but she's unrelenting as she chuckles.
"I don't think I will," She hummed, her other hand squeezing your cheek, and she chuckled again. She laughs at your grumbles of pain.
You didn't know what to expect when she called you, maybe a lecture for your reputation, which you still aren't sure how she knows. Or advice on the feelings she knows you have for her daughter.Â
Being pinched to death, wasn't it.
"Griot, where is Y/N?" Shuri looks at the outline in front of her. Picking between different fabrics she created and stretched them as far as she could.
"Y/N is in the royal garden with your mother."
She pauses, standing straight and looking over at Riri's section. The college student is by herself, still sorting through the piles and adding to her bundle.Â
"What are they doing?"
"Queen Ramonda requested I not give any type of access to their conversation."
The sigh she lets out sounds heavy and draws the attention of nearby scientists. Waving them away, Shuri looks back to the outline of a suit in front of her. She'll have to show it to Y/N later.Â
You and Ramonda sit together in one of the gazebos, eating and drinking. (Nonalcoholic and noncaffeinated drinks) Ramonda figured it would be good to get food in your belly.
"If I'm thinking correctly, you haven't eaten since you went with Shuri to your garage," She said, scooping some eggs on your plate. She placed three strips of bacon next to them as she continued, "And from what I've gathered knowing you so far, you probably hadn't eaten before then either. Maybe a quick snack and told yourself you'd eat later."
"How are you, intombi?" Ramonda asks, wrapping a strip of bacon around her french toast. With your focus on the design engraved into the cup, you answer, "I'm fine." (girl)
"Uyaxoka," She hums, chucking a grape at you. Instead of smiling or laughing, you tense. Shoulders close in, and your eyes flicker between green and hazel before relaxing into brown. (You're lying)
"Talk to me," Ramonda whispers, voice soft and soothing as she places her hand on your own.
"I don't know," You murmur, and you both know it's a lie. There's a slight pause before you pull your hand away. That feeling from last night overwhelming you, guilt, and you stand abruptly. The table jerks and the juice splash in their cups as the vase on the table tilts over, dirt spilling onto the table. If Ramonda noticed, she doesn't acknowledge it.
"It's my fault," You whisper, your voice is strained as your hands are tight fists at your sides.
Slowly standing, Ramonda walks to stand next to you. No further movement was made, her presence bringing comfort without overstepping your body's boundaries.Â
"Your fault?" She questions, just as quietly, making sure the Dora can't hear. Tears pool in your eyelids, and it stings.
"I tried to stop her, make her choose something else... but she didn't listen," You choked out, taking a deep breath to break the sob from your lips.Â
An arm wraps around your waist, and you cave. Clinging to Ramonda as your body shakes in her hold. She didn't understand your pain, but she understood how you felt.
You were afraid.
Ramonda lifts your head from her shoulder and looks up at you, wiping away your tears. She cups your face, pulling your focus back on her, and she smiles softly.
"It's not your fault," She whispers, and you shake your head.
"It's not your fault," She repeats, noticing the shift in your eyes as they pool with tears. The fear is still there, the guilt of all the deaths.
"It's not your fault." Her voice is firm and soothing, drawing you in. Your eyes gloss over and you let out a shaky sigh. She's right, it's not your fault.
It's Namorâs.
Shuri walked up the stairs toward Riri's station. Looking between the huge pile of discarded scarps and Riri sanding a vibranium plate.
"We need to find a way to weaken, Namor."
"Even weakened, he still gon be a problem," Riri replied, still focusing on the plate. Shuri sighed, placing safety glasses on and grabbing another vibranium plate, "The Black Panther has never failed to protect Wakanda."
"Thought he was gone."
"My brother is dead, but it doesn't mean the Black Panther is gone," Shuri replied, just as the elevator opened and Y/N walked out.
"Chicken footâs physiology is completely different-" Y/N explained, walking up the stairs with a small case in her hands. "None of them fly or have pointed ears like him. They turn blue when out of the water, he doesn't."
"The woman that was guarding us had water on their mouths and necks, he doesn't have that," Riri added, stopping the machine and looking up at the approaching Nymerian.
"And before he took out your plane, he jumped back in the water," Y/N continued, giving Shuri a pointed look and she nodded in understanding.
"He's breathing air and getting oxygen from the water on his skin," Riri said, voicing everyone's thoughts. "If we dry his ass out, he won't be as strong."
"Griot, we need to convert the Royal Tylon fighter into a pure evaporation chamber," Shuri spoke, lifting a screen on her beads.
"Is that even possible?" Riri asked, and YN scoffed as she slapped the back of her head. "Course it is."
Y/N sat at a desk in her section, using a needle to withdraw some of her blood. She pulled up her DNA and placed it next to another strand of her DNA from her home form. Y/N sighed as she used a hair tie to pull her locs in a low ponytail.
"T, come help me please," Riri called. Y/N huffed, walking over to her. Riri pointed to the gears made of vibranium.
"I was gonna use the pliers, but one of the scientists told me it'll fuck it up," Riri explained, looking at the row of different tools. Y/N chuckled as she handed Riri a pair of tweezers, "These'll help place the tiny gears without getting your fingers stuck."
"Thanks," Riri mumbled, fiddling with the tweezers in her hands. She glanced up at Y/N, "What're you wearing? When we go fight."
"Shuri said she was working on a suit that won't rip during my shift," Y/N said, grinning softly at her shorter friend.Â
Shuri stood across the lab, watching the interaction as she mindlessly placed codes in their spots. Someone clearing their throat draws her attention to Okoye.
"You said you wanted to show me something."
"I regret letting you show me this thing," Okoye grumbled, and Shuri sighed as Okoye glared at the suit in front of them. Looking over at the princess, Okoye sighed, "I'm a civilian now. I turned in my weapon."
"I built you a new spear," Shuri retorted.
"A new one?" Okoye asked, shock clear in her voice. Shuri nodded, "Yes."
"What is this contraption called?" Okoye asked, looking down her nose at the suit.
"Midnight Angel," Shuri answered.
"Midnight Angel," Okoye mocked, grimacing at the name.
"It'll even out the odds against them," Shuri spoke, lifting her hand to silence Okoye. "Sister, I need you to be ready when I call you."
Okoye sighed, glaring at the suit before looking at her friend, "How many of these did you make?"
"What exactly are you implying?"
"As your friend, I am telling you, she is not the one," Okoye's tone was sharp and though she was speaking to Shuri, her eyes were trailing after the Nymerian college student. Y/N was talking to Riri, sharing an idea for Riri's suit.
"And as my sister?"
"Leave her. Leave her before she hurts you." Okoye scoffs and Shuri straightens as her eyes glare at the woman next to her. Okoye shrugs, continuing her sentence without care for the glare piercing her face. "You heard Riri tell you Y/N won't stay loyal, she will never truly love you. Her views on love and relationships are corrupted beyond repair."
"It's different, she told me she sees it now. She can see the love she has for me, she cares for me, and no one will ever be able to change it," Shuri defends, continuing her work on Y/Nâs suit.
"You know your mother told you to-"
"My mother told me to listen to my heart," Shuri snaps, turning swiftly to glare at Okoye. "And my heart tells me to stay with Taraji. My mother would be disappointed in you, trying to stop me from being happy." It was silent between the two for just a few moments, before Okoye's eyes softened.
"Is that what this is? Love?" She asks, voice barely above a whisper. Her brows furrow as she takes a step forward. "Or obsession?"
"It's love," Shuri's face was soft, eyes filled with an emotion Okoye wasn't used to seeing on her. The ex-General sighed deeply, "No, this is obsession, and you need to fix it or it will kill you."
"We love each other," Shuri spoke, voice certain as she turns back to Y/N's suit. Okoye scoffs in disbelief, watching Shuri put her walls up. "Y/N is incapable of love, she'll use you and drop you off. It's what her kind do, we have the research to prove it."
"My kind?" Y/N asked, voice breathless as she glanced between the two. "I ain't know there was an issue with my kind."'
She's standing at the bottom of the stairs with Riri a few steps above her. Y/N chuckles, hands on her hips as she slowly paces back and forth. "You're right, Nymerians are known for messing around and our lack of loyalty," She grins, nodding her head as she cracks her knuckles.
"It was only a matter of time, right?" She asked, pausing to look at Shuri. She scoffed at the tears in her eyes. "No, stop crying. You right, at some point I was probably gonna cheat. Gonna break your heart, you know?" She shrugged as she looked over to Riri, they nodded to each other before Riri went up the stairs.
"You wouldn't," Shuri tries, attempting to hug Y/N but she stepped away. She pointed at Okoye with a grin, her fangs slowly sharpening as she argued, "She said it herself, and since she such an expert on my kind, she right, yeah?"
"We're all just a bunch of whores, right? Can't keep it in our pants, legs gotta be spread, just giving the goods," She rambled, looking around as the room began to spin.
"Once this is over, we gone," she mumbled, nodding at Okoye and turning to join Riri in rebuilding her suit.
"Don't leave me," Shuri pleads as she follows after her, almost tripping up the stairs.
"Oh, I'm leaving you," Y/N snickered as she watched a guilty Okoye leave the lab. Her eyes trailed to Shuri who froze at her statement, she tilted her head waiting for a reaction. When nothing came she stepped forward, looking down at the stiff woman, and whispered, "Once we win this war, you can go back to living in a palace and I can go back to fucking random bitches. Kay?" She walked away ignoring Shuri's mumbling.
"But you promised."
Royal Love +epilogue đâ¤ď¸
Summary: M'baku is a 19 year old prince who will soon take the throne of jabariland. His father has arranged a marriage for him as it has been a tradition for years but, Mbaku is not happy. One day he meets a stunning girl named y/n and his life changes in the blink of an eye.
Mbaku Povđ¤:
I was awakened by the voice of my two guards Amina and Imani. "My prince, wake up. We have very important things scheduled for today." Amina said. "I've already sent for your breakfast to be prepared. It should be done by the time you finish getting ready." Imani added. "Thank you Amina and Imani." I thanked them. They nodded in response. They left my room so that I could get ready. I brushed my teeth, washed my face, took a shower and got dressed in my royal attire for today. I've just turned 19 only two weeks ago and my father is already hassling me about an arranged marriage. I wish to find my own wife but no matter how many times I bring it up he doesn't listen. I made my way downstairs and ate breakfast with my parents. "Mbaku I've found a wife for you. Her name is princess Sarai from the merchant tribe." my dad told me happily. *here we go again* I thought. "Father I've already told you. I'm not marrying her." I said annoyed. "It's tradition. You're about to become king, no? You can't become king without a wife. "IM NOT MARRYING HER!" I yelled. I'm so angry at my father all he seems to care about is the throne and to him, anything outside of that is irrelevant. "Ay you dare to speak to your father this way eh? The marriage is happening in three days end of discussion." My father spat.
When nightfall came I packed all of my things and brought along food and weapons. I planned to run away from the palace. *i can't be forced to marry someone if I'm not here* I thought.
*timeskip for 1 hour*
By now, I was long gone from my kingdom leaving behind my family, tribe, and the throne. I needed to make a point to my father that he can't control me. I'm 19 I should have the right to make MY own decisions especially when it comes to marriage. It was nightfall when I saw a girl walking through the village. Her s/c( skin color) glistened in the moonlight. Her long locs of hair touched all the way to the middle of her back. "Can I help you?" She asked knocking me out of my trance. "Y-yeah. Can you tell me where I am? I've come from jabariland." I asked her. "Sure. You're in the mahi village which is not too far from the molwheni clan" the mystery girl replied. ( A/N: not sure if that's real it's the first thing I thought of đ). "Do you have anywhere to stay?" She added. "No. Can you tell me the directions to a place?" I asked. I didn't want to trouble her but I also needed somewhere to stay. "Come." The girl replied while offering her hand. I took it and she led us to a large hut house near a waterfall. "This is my house. If you wish, You may stay here for however long you need. I don't want you going off by yourself this late at night." The girl told me. "Thank you. My name is Mbaku. What's yours?" I asked her. "My name is y/n nice to meet you." Y/n replied. "Nice to meet you as well" I told her. We were getting to know each other and I explained why I'd come here.
Y/n povâ¨: i normally don't let people stay with me but Mbaku seems nice and I didn't want him out this late at night. When it gets late it's very dangerous and I wouldn't want him to get hurt. We talked for a little and I learned that he was a prince. We talked and eventually fell asleep.
*timeskip to one week*
Mbaku has been staying here with me for a week now and I enjoy his company. I've always lived alone and it was nice to have someone to talk and spend time with. Unfortunately, he is leaving to go back with his kingdom. I have developed strong feelings for him but I feel its way too early for a relationship at the moment. I helped mbaku pack his things and got ready to walk him out. "Y/n Wait i have to talk to you before I go" he spoke. "I'm listening" I told him. "It's only been a week but it feels like I've known you forever. I have strong feelings for you and you're the only person who has made me feel this much happiness in a long time. Would you like to come back to jabariland with me?" Mbaku spoke. I thought about it for a second while taking everything in. "Yes I'd love to come with you under one condition" I responded. He looked up at me to let me know he was listening. "Can we get to know each other more before any relationship between us? I don't want us to move too fast." I added. "Yes princess anything for you. I need a wife to become king but that is the least of my concern right now. I genuinely want to be with you and Im willing to wait however long it takes until you're ready." Mbaku replied. The both of started to walk back to jabariland as we held hands and talked.
Mbaku Povđ¤:
*Timeskip*
By now y/n and I had made it back to jabariland. She suggested that we both share a room due to her not being familiar with the palace (a/n: y/n didn't want to be by herself) and of course I agreed. While y/n was preparing for bed I went to go speak with my mother. I didn't even want to look at my father let alone speak to him. When it came to marriage and things in general, my mother has always been more understanding than my father. When we talked, I explained to her where I went, why I left, and the reason I didn't want to marry princess Sarai. She understood where I was coming from and she agreed to talk to my father about it. I made my way back to me and y/n's room where I found her already asleep. I took a shower, brushed my teeth and face, and changed into my sleepwear. Afterwards, I got in the bed and snuggled close to y/n and dozed off to sleep.
A/n: i don't feel like putting a bunch of different pov's and time skips and I also didn't wanna leave y'all on a cliffhanger so i wrote a epilogueđ
Epilogue: y/n and mbaku dated for about 2 years and 6 months before they got married. M'baku's mom talked to his dad and after some time he agreed to call off the planned wedding for princess SaraĂ and mbaku. Instead, mbaku and y:n got married and a bunch of gifts were given to them by the people of their tribe. They received clothes, jewelry, etc. about 6 months after their wedding y/n discovered that she was pregnant. She had birthed one girl and one boy. Mbaku and y/n named them g/n and b/n( girl name and boy name. it can be any name you want btw). Y/n and mbaku both ruled as king and queen until their son b/n became old enough to inherit the throne. Their daughter was next in line but she had chosen to be a warrior instead of a ruler.
A/n: thats it for this imagine but the next one will be about tchalla since I haven't done anything about him yet so stay tuned! Hopefully you enjoyed this imagine and let me know what you would like to see more of, comments, etc.
Title: đđđđĄđđ đđđđ đâ
Inya followed M'Baku down to the kitchen. It was a sizable room that seemed equipped with just about any form of appliance one might need to make any dish they pleased. There was an island with barstools but he gestured for her to take a seat at the table near a large bay window. One look at the outside world made Inya nearly choke on her own breath. She wasnât sure what she had expected, but it had not been the visage of a sprawling tree lined mountain side.
The view out the window perfectly framed the overlook of a rocky drop-off that likely went down a very long way. The ground below in the distance seemed to be almost basin-shaped with massive trees filling it to capacity. Directly across the basin of trees are more mountain-sides. They dot the land with trees before quickly fading out into snowy peaks that go up farther than she can actually see. There are clearly more homes sparsely decorating the mountains in the distance, their geometric wooden shape seems to be carved into the cliffs and the smoke from their chimneys is readily apparent.
Jabariland was a jarring change from Wakandan scenery, but not as drastic from what she saw in the wilderness back home. Still, Inya had never quite been up as high as a mountaintop before. The thought of how isolated she now was made her heart clench.
Was there even a way down from here if she got out?
Destabilization and possible third film
According to the YouTube channel New Rockstars, the scene where Richard Schiff's character tells Val and Ross that America intents to "destabilize" Wakanda was a reshoot.
This is interesting because there is a scene, and one line in particular, in the original script about destabilization.
When everyone is evacuated to Jabariland, the Elders gather and bicker amongst themselves as waht to do next (Most want to go to Warrior Falls to chose a new ruler but the River Tribe Elder says he can't guarantee the safety of that--which is FUCKING CORRECT. Namor came in through a pond before). The Border Tribe Elder continues to be a dick, as scene in the deleted scenes.
It is Nakia who comes forward to stop them.
NAKIA: This is what he wanted. RIVER TRIBE ELDER (THE DICK): Who? NAKIA: Namor. This is how you destabilize a powerful nation. Remove the leader and let the country descend into infighting and chaos. I have seen it done before. BORDER TRIBE ELDER (such a dick): Why do you care, War Dog? Are you even Wakandan? AYO: She is River Tribe, Wakandan to her soul. She has never failed us, which is more than I can say about your soldiers.
included the Ayo line because I love ladies sticking up for ladies but also zinging the Border Tribe Leader.
More importantly, now we know America will be destabilizing Wakanda for sure. Some have suggested the Thunderbolts will be part of this. I've heard rumors that's about stealing something, possibly vibranium.
There's already tension between Shuri and M'Baku about technology v spiritualism. (There's a weird bit in the script that I'm glad was cut where M'Baku thinks the Talocanil water bombs are "sorcery".) Some kind of problem with Shuri's new developments could cause tension between the King and the Panther.
In addition to already being a dick, I don't think Border Tribe Elder is going to love M'Baku's mocking way of dealing with people. He is used to being respected. And in this scene he actually leaves because of Ayo. In a huff. Like a little bitch. (Directly after this scene, is when we have the deleted scene where he asks Okoye to challenge to be Queen. It's important to me that everyone know Shuri was not yet Panther then for some reason. I guess because it would be the ritual for ruling but without the Heart-Shaped Herb. But the other tribal elders wanted to have the Warrior Falls ceremony anyway. I don't think Shuri could have won against any of the champions unless they all agreed to not put one forth.)
I don't know the loyalties of the Mining Tribe or Merchant Tribe. I would assume the Mining Tribe would be with Shuri, who has long been the vibranium expert. But the Merchant Tribe probably does business with Americans.
The other thing I worry about, and if the Thunderbolts steal this, I will murder them all: someone kidnapping and trying to puppet young T'Challa.
As far as we know only Nakia, Shuri and Ramonda knew about the boy. And Nakia and T'Challa for sure took steps to hide him in Haiti (Nakia mentions that Toussaint's "baba" prepared him for his death). There's not a lot of people I think could outsmart T'Chall and Shuri. I also have a high degree of respect for Nakia's abilities, not just as a fighter but at subterfuge. (Even if she didn't have the resources of the Wakanda government, I could see her going after her kidnapped child Taken-style and saving him.)
So I do think it would be hard to get to Prince T'Challa.
But I'm worried about it. (I'd be so done with you, Bucky. You're on thin ice.)
Back In Your Arms: Shuri x Black! Fem! Reader
warnings: spoilers, mention of death, yelling, swearing, angst, lmk if i forgot anything
a/n: it's literally semester end for me and my brain is beyond fried so im sorry if this is ass lmao
The minute you found out Shuri was planning an attack on Namor and the Talokanil, you were already readying yourself to join. Although you never verbally told her, she already knew by the way you spent extra time training in the early mornings and late nights. It was only the night before that Shuri told you that you were not included in the attack on the enemy.
You paced around her lab growing more agitated by the second, "What do you mean I'm not going tomorrow?" Shuri repeated herself firmly, "Exactly what that means. I do not understand why you are making this so difficult." You stopped pacing and faced her, throwing your hands in the air, "So what do you expect me to do?" Shuri didn't look away from the monitor in front of her as she added finishing touches to something she'd been working on, "I have arranged for you to stay in Jabariland until we have finished business with Namor. You will be accompanied by Noxolo and Taji, per General's recommendation. M'baku has also ordered two Jabari warriors to stay back as well for you."
Hearing her plan of making you sit around and do nothing only frustrated you more. You brought your hands up to your head then exclaimed, "I'm supposed to just sit around holed up in a goddamn cave while you and everyone else go save the world?! Are you fucking kidding me Shuri?! T'challa and Queen Ramonda would allow me to-"
"YOU DO NOT SPEAK THEIR NAMES! YOU DO NOT GET TO TELL ME WHAT THEY WOULD DO. THAT DOESN'T MATTER! THEY AREN'T HERE- THEY'RE GONE. " Shuri's voice echoed through her lab, the force of her voice reverberating in your chest. The queen took a deep breath and slowly walked over towards you with narrowed eyes. A pit formed in your stomach as you stared back at her, the light that shone behind those deep brown seas was gone. There was nothing but hatred and anger as it consumed her from the inside out that you could only bear witness to.
Shuri stood eye level with you and she spoke through gritted teeth, "You are staying back. That is an order from me as your queen. Do you understand?" You lowered your head and answered, "Yes...your highness." The title taste bitter on your tongue and it was clear by the slight sarcasm in your voice. Nonetheless you conceded to her order, and satisfied by your reply Shuri turned back to what she was working on, not even bidding you goodnight like she usually would.
ęˇęŚË︜︜ęŚęˇęˇęŚË︜︜ęŚęˇęˇęŚË︜︜ęŚęˇ
Nearly six hours had passed since you first arrived in Jabariland for the time being. You were being sheltered in a den far within one of the mountains. A small fire burned in the center of the floor and small wooden furnishings adorned by furs perfectly place around the room. You sat upside down with your legs over the back of a chair while your head dangled above the floor.
From the entrance of the den, Olaitan, one of the Jabari warriors on guard insisted, "There was no space on the door for Jack. If he got on the door then they both would have died!" You shook your head in refusal and the mix of beads and shells that adorned your hair clicked together. You swung your legs back onto the ground and sat up straight, closing your eyes for a moment as the blood rushed back to your head.
Before you could reply, Noxolo, one of the Dora Milaje who accompanied you, cut in, "I refuse. Rose let Jack die. There was room on that door, she was just selfish." You listened to the young warrior, watching how the large scar over her white eye crinkled when she narrowed her gaze. You pointed to Noxolo and chimed in, "See that's exactly what I've been saying."
Across from you, Taji, another Dora Milaje shook her head, "How could Jack and Rose fit on that tiny piece of wood? There is no way that both of them could have survived! Olaitan and I are right- Jack wouldn't have made it if he wanted to save Rose!" Her deep brown eyes sparkled with delight of thinking she was right. You and Noxolo looked at each other with exasperated expressions. It had been two hours of this debate and neither side was willing to admit that they were wrong or right.
You slapped your hand against the floor and said, "Jack could have fit. There was an entire MythBusters episode on this!" Noxolo snapped her fingers and confirmed, "Yes, and they confirmed that Rose and Jack could have fit on the door in five different ways." Taji asked, "Did they do this experiment in the Northern Atlantic Ocean in April at night time? With individuals who measure exactly the same to Rose and Jack?"
At that argument you and Noxolo fell silent, making Taji and Olaitan laugh at you both. Desperate for a tie breaker you turned to the last person in the room who had yet to add their two cents into the debate. With a cheeky grin you asked, "Adisa, you're the deciding vote." The large Jabari warrior looked between you, the two Dora Milaje, and his fellow warrior.
A thick tension fell over the entire den, only the sound of the crackling fire at the center of the room could be heard. Adisa looked at you and Noxolo giving you a hopeful grin, but he responded, "I have never seen this 'Titanic' you all speak of." The four of you threw your hands in the air in defeat and annoyance as Adisa laughed heartedly at the disappointment he caused.
Purple flashes from your Kimoyo beads drew your attention from the rest of the group. You turned your back towards them and hunched over your wrist, waiting for a call to come through. It took a moment then you heard a familiar voice, "Ayo, Y/n." You held your beads closer and asked, "Riri? Why isn't Shuri the one calling me?" The student paused as if she was debating on telling you something before she simply replied, "She told me to call you." Your heart raced in your chest and you asked, "Why? Why would she ask you to do that? Is everything okay? Where is Shuri?"
Riri let out an exhausted sigh and told you, "Wait chill out. Take a breather, your girl is fine. She just has something she's doing right now aight? I was just calling to tell you they sending a flyer to pick you up. I'll see you when you get here, okay?" You but your lip nervously and answered much quieter than before, "Mhm. See you later." The call ended and you rested your head between your knees while taking deep breaths as you waited for the flyer to come get you.
ęˇęŚË︜︜ęŚęˇęˇęŚË︜︜ęŚęˇęˇęŚË︜︜ęŚęˇ
The entirety of the ride back to the Citadel you were dead silent. Your leg bounced anxiously against the floor while you pulled at the coils along the nape of your neck. In your mind you replayed your last moments with Shuri before you left for Jabariland:
You step foot onto the flyer to see Shuri waiting for you with Riri by her side. While Riri grinned from ear to ear at seeing you, the queen did not wear the same expression. Exactly the same as the past few days, Shuri's face blank and emotionless, and her eyes looked empty. Your heart broke at the sight but you told yourself this was part of her grieving process.
It was as if Shuri was present but distant at the same time, just standing before you not making any motion towards you. Until you closed the space between the two of you by pulling her into your arms. Shuri then wrapped her arms around your body and rested her head on your shoulder. After a moment you pulled away from her and attempted to look her in the eyes. The queen turned her head slightly so she was looking just past you. A frown tugged at the corner of your lips and you held her face in your hands, "I'll see you when we get back, yeah?" Still refusing to look at you Shuri nodded ever so slightly in response but remained completely silent.
Your thumb grazed the side of her jaw and you placed a chaste kiss against her lips that she reciprocated. Slowly, your palms dragged lower, holding onto Shuri's neck gently and you quietly spoke so only she could hear you, "Sthandwa."
Finally, the queen's eyes met yours and you told her, "Be smart. Don't forget who you are." She nodded in understanding and you kissed her once more, "I love you Shuri." She held you tighter in her arms, squeezing you so hard it almost hurt- almost as if she didn't want you to leave. Your girlfriend pressed a kiss to your forehead and murmured against you, "I love you, y/n."
Shuri released you from her embrace and you walked further down the ramp to exit the ship. The queen stopped walking in front of the two Dora Milaje she'd assigned to accompany you. The two young women, Noxolo and Taji, were the youngest warriors in the group, but Okoye and Ayo recommended the two for the job.
The queen stopped the two warriors with a hand to the sterum, "You understand what is expected of you both, correct?" Noxolo and Taji replied confidently, "Yes your highness." Shuri lowly whispered to the two Dora Milaje, "Protect her at all costs." The two warriors once more answered in unison, "Yes your highness." Shuri stepped off of the flyer but not before looking over her shoulder to see you and Riri.
At the sight of Riri you cocked your head to the side and smiled. You pulled her into a side hug and told her, "Go kick some ass but promise me you'll be careful out there, aight?" The student gave you her word, "I got you, don't worry." You gave her a knowing look and she put her hands up in fake surrender with a laugh, "I'm being for real!" You punched her arm lightly and admitted, "I'm just teasing you don't worry." Riri turned to walk off the ship and said, "I'll see you when you get back!" All you could do was give a very convincing fake smile, because anything else and you would have ran back towards them and tried to stay. The flyer began to close and Shuri watched from the ground until it was no longer in sight with you in it.
ęˇęŚË︜︜ęŚęˇęˇęŚË︜︜ęŚęˇęˇęŚË︜︜ęŚęˇ
The moment the flyer touched the ground and opened you were already trying to make your way to see Shuri. When the door opened Nakia was waiting for you while Ayo waited for Noxolo and Taji, pulling them aside immediately. You looked around to see many Dora Milaje missing. Slowly you turned back towards Ayo and noticed the paled look on Taji's face. The young warrior was out of earshot but the way she swallowed thickly and remained silent, accepting whatever Ayo was telling them made your stomach drop.
Whatever Nakia was trying to tell you started to sound like jibberish until you ran a full out sprint. You dashed up two flights of stairs and the long corridor leading to Shuriâs chamber. The beads and shells on your front braids smacked against your cheeks and eyes but you couldn't care less. The sound of running footsteps echoed behind yours and a woman called out, "Y/N! Stop!" Turning on your heel you faced Nakia, watching as she jogged up to you.
Tears burned your eyes as you shook your head in denial from already thinking the worst case scenario. Nakia held you by the shoulders and calmly spoke, "She is alive. She will be okay, Shuri will be alright, Y/n." Her words took a moment to register but soon you found your breaths slowing and tears stopping. Nervously you questioned, "What happened?" The older woman explained slowly, "While the rest of us were fighting on the ship, Shuri and Namor went off alone. I do not know the entre story, but all I know is they were battling on an island. Shuri has sustained multiple injuries that are being treated currently." As if she could read your mind, Nakia added, "You will be able to see her shortly. The healers must finish with her before then. You cannot get in their way."
Although your tears stopped falling you felt like you were going to fall apart all over again. Nakia gently placed an arm around your shoulder and led you away from Shuri's bedroom door. The chamber door opened and Nyakallo, the head healer, exited the room and waved you back over.
Nyakallo told you kindly, "Miss Y/N. You are able to visit her, she is resting now. If she needs anything you know how to call me." You thanked the older woman and burst into Shuri's room. Your girlfriend lay in her bed surrounded by pillows which made her look smaller than normal. Her lips were pale and chapped and her eyes shut with her hands resting over her chest. The concern on your face went away when Shuri cracked a smile and chuckled lightly. You groaned in annoyance and whined, "Even when you're seriously injured you still find the time to play with me huh?"
Shuri's eyes remained shut as she quietly answered, "I got speared to a rock. Let me have my fun...plus it's fun to mess with you." She could tell without looking that you were giving her an annoyed glare. You chose not to acknowledge the whole getting speared to a rock thing- that was for another time.
Your girlfriend hummed then requested, "Lay with me?" You pulled back her blankets and climbed into her bed next to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. Shuri slowly moved herself closer to you, and in the process you noticed how she was moving extremely stiff. The familiar and comforting smell of vanilla and ylang-ylang that clung to her sheets filled your senses. She rested her head on your chest and let out a breath that she seemed to have been holding for some time.
The two of you laid in silence until the queen let out a shaky breath, "I'm sorry. I yelled at you and I pushed you away recently when you were trying to be there for me. I'm sorry." You held onto Shuri's hand as she took another breath so she could continue, "I couldn't lose you too. He- he promised me he would-" Her voice broke as she remembered the promises Namor made and kept, resulting in her own massive loss. You gently shushed her, "Shhh. We don't have to have this conversation right now. You are supposed to be resting remember?"
Your girlfriend held back the tears that welled up behind her eyes, "Yes." She turned her head into your chest and you held her head closer to your heart. You stroked her head gently while whispering sweet nothings in her ear. Shuri's body started to relax against yours and soft snores fell past her lips. You kissed the top of her head and squeezed your eyes shut, thanking the ancestors and gods above that she was back in your arms again.
The great war III
Pairing: Shuri x Fem!reader Warnings: Angst, Spoilers, mentions about injuries, fluff
part one, part two
You did your best to distract yourself from worrying about your wife. You were informed that they have just arrived. So you and the queen aboard the aircraft, get to the palace as quickly as possible.
Shuri was held up by M'baku. The injuries she sustained were brutal but thanks to the Black Panther abilities she has, she's able to survive it. She was limping to get to the lab to be patched up when she heard someone screaming her name.
The voice sounded familiar that when she looked up, her legs would give up. You were calling out for her name, running towards her. "Shuri!" You screamed again and when you were near to where she was standing, you rushed to hug her tight.
When she engulfed you in her arms she felt as if she was home, in your arms where she can lay down her defenses, where she can rest and not worry about tomorrow, where she was safe. "You're here" She whispered in your ear " Thank Bast you're awake" She whispered again.
You cried into her shoulder and she did the same but when you hugged her even tighter she winced in pain. You pulled away and asked if she was hurt, she simply nodded. You moved to her side and let her lean into you. "I've got her to thank you Lord M'Baku, the debts will be repaid," You said to him but he swayed his head no " I did it for Wakanda," He said and went to excuse himself to return to Jabariland.
You held her up with your hand around her waist and her arm around your shoulder for support "Where is my mother?" She asked "She's inside waiting" You replied and she nodded in agreement.
When you two reached inside her lab, her mother walked in. The Queen and her hugged each other tightly, asking one another if they are fine and telling her that she worries for her daughter's safety, praying to Bast and the ancestors to keep her safe.
Shuri soon later started to work on patching herself up, but you stopped her before she could begin "Nah uh, I'll do it" You told her. She just gave you what you needed because if she didn't agree you'd say "I am your wife and that is my duty" and how she was injured so she didn't but she did plan to mess with you and ended up not going through with it.
"When were you up?" She asked when you were done "Maybe a day after you left," You said as you cleaned up your mess. The silence was surrounding you two. She felt kind of awkward with you now with the mess she made. When you threw the last garbage out, you fell to your knees, and the feelings you kept at bay finally gushed out. Shuri saw you fell so she hopped off and approached you gently. She heard your cries and soon after, she engulfed you in her arms "I thought I lost you" You began, trying your hardest to form the words you want to say to her. "I thought I wouldn't be able to see you again, feel you again, kiss you again. I thought of the worse and I hate myself for doing that" You continue. She stayed silent and let you cry out the pent-up feelings you kept to yourself "And the past months, I've been nothing more than selfish. When you were grieving, I wanted you all to myself instead of letting you do whatever you want to do" You added which made Shuri shish you now "You weren't selfish, Sthandwa. If anything I was the one who completely abounded you. I know you were grieving too but I let work consume me, I'm sorry for that" Shuri cried out this time and you both sobbed hard. "I'm sorry too, My Shuri" You cried out.
You pulled away and faced her. Leaned in to place your forehead against hers.
"I love you" She whispered "I will always love you" She added again "I love you too" You whispered back "I will always love you" You added
Both of you were hesitant but later leaned in to kiss. It was slow and hesitant but was soon replaced with longing and passion.
You both apologize to each other and vow that even when times do get rough, you'll always be there for each other.
"I should not be surprised that the Wakandan royal family sent me... You." M'Baku sighed, his gaze falling upon the young woman who was being presented in front of him. It wasn't enough that the mainstream Wakandians saw Jabariland as hopelessly traditional, they now wanted to push foreign influences on them as well? "They have been pushing for me to find a partner, a companion, for quite some time. Yet you're the first one they've sent me. Why?"
Suggested Listening: Something Different by Adekunle Gold, Canât Anymore by Shenseea, IndĂŠlĂŠbile by Yseult
Chapter 7
The Ritz Carlton, Los Angeles
MâBaku walked into the loft silently and placed his bag down by the door. The setting sun peered through the curtains on the windows and illuminated the dim room. His eyes closed and he let out a long sigh. This weight of emotion he had been carrying finally rolled off his shoulders as he opened his eyes and took in the surroundings of his second home. After a harrowing time in Jabariland, he only sought your comfort. On the flight over, he found himself anxious to get to you. Wanting, needing to have you in his arms; to hear the melodic tone of your voice as you speak. Finding solace in your being was something he had become accustomed to. But now, it was all he craved. It seemed that being away from you for even a day was too much after the two months he spent trying to instill a sense of security in his people after the coup. He wanted so desperately to make up for the lost time between you, but that was a power MâBaku knew he could never possess.Â
The kitchen and living room were empty but he knew exactly where youâd be at this time. If there was one thing he had learned over the past six months he had known you, it was that you rose with the sun. And surely heâd find you behind a canvas as you always were. MâBaku followed the sounds of soft music dancing through the air and stopped just short of the source. He rested his towering frame against the doorframe of your art room when he saw you working, still in your pajamas. Not wanting to be a distraction, he watched you for a moment as you moved your hand up and down the canvas in a circular motion. Fragments of gold flew away with each movement; streaks of sunlight catching each piece and reflecting its light onto the walls. The cowrie shells in your braids clicked and clacked against one another as they sway across your back; this moment in time was one that he would cherish till the end of his days.
âUthixokazi wam, uyamangalisa.âÂ
You looked over your shoulder to see the gentle giant smiling at you, his cute little gap on display. Rubbing your hands together to rid them of the excess gold flakes, you stood up and walked over to hug his waist.Â
âI missed you,â you muttered into his chest. He rubbed your back and chuckled.
âI told you Iâd return in a day's time, sthandwa. Show me what youâve made.âÂ
Leading him by his hand, you positioned him in front of the canvas resting on your easel. A twilight-skinned woman with stars for freckles held her palms together over her chest and golden adornments sat upon her chest and wrists; a golden halo surrounded her. It was your first commission and it felt so good to finally be done with it. You watched as MâBakuâs hand traced the edges of the painting slowly.Â
âYouâre torturing me, Emby. Tell me what you think.â
âI think..,â MâBaku trailed off. âI think I must have it.â
âWhat? No, this is a commission that someone paid for! You canât just have it,â you chuckled as his face turned from wonder to annoyance.Â
âNonsense. How much did this umntu pay you? I have $10,000 American dollars in my bag, surely that will be suitable!â You couldnât help the bubbling laughter that was spilling out of you. You were aware that MâBaku was as serious as could be but his face when you told him ânoâ was priceless. Giggles echoed through the room and you could tell he was taking none of your shit.Â
âI canât, daddy. But I will make a painting just for you. Wait, why do you have so much cash on your person?â The question came out as a shout and he shook his head at you, waving off your concerns.
âWe have a flight soon. Are you packed?â
âYes, my bags are on the bed,â you noted, picking up a drop sheet, âCan I ask where weâre going?â Â
âOf course. We are going to St. Lucia for two weeks,â he smiled, holding the other end of the drop sheet and helping you cover your masterpiece. He laughed when your face lit up at the mention of the destination. Your excitement always pleased him.
âTwo whole weeks? Someone must miss me.âÂ
âI donât know what you speak of, Oshun.â He shrugged his shoulders and you chuckled, lightly hitting his thick abdomen.Â
âYou play too much.â
âCome. Knowing you, you most likely ran to this room at first light rather than having any sustenance. I will make us something to carry us through the journey,â he muttered, shaking his head in disapproval.Â
âYouâre always trying to feed me. âBaku, you donât have to-â
âHush. Let me care for you.â MâBakuâs hands squeezed your shoulders gently and he leaned down to press a kiss onto your temple. You could only smile as words left your mind and you followed him to the kitchen.Â
Kalinago Beach, St. Lucia, Caribbean
The island was lush with mountainous greenery and the sweet sounds of technicolored birds speaking to each other in the trees. It was the most beautiful place you had seen and also the hottest. The sweltering heat made you thankful for the protective style you asked Meg to put in last week. But the view of the Kalinago Beach resort made you forget the heat as you walked hand in hand with MâBaku. The resort was nestled between the two towering dormant volcanoes and had clear, crystal-blue waves crashing upon the private beach.Â
This resort had been at the top of your list for a long time. It was the only resort in St. Lucia that was owned by descendants of the slaves that worked on the sugar plantation that stood here years ago. When you first told MâBaku you wanted to go there, you made it known that you only wanted him to spend money at Black Saint Lucian-owned places. St. Luciaâs history was tainted with Franceâs colonial bullshit, but you still wanted to see it. You were eager to see everything the island had to offer. Where would you go first? Embark on the Chocolate Heritage Tour? Experience the Diamond Falls? Maybe visit the bird sanctuary? You couldnât make up your mind but before you could do anything, youâd need to rid yourself of your luggage.Â
Once you stepped onto the checkered floor of the lobby, MâBaku instructed you to sit whilst he checked in. You sat under a palm leaf-shaped fan and your eyes wandered until you caught sight of a gift shop in the corner. The trinkets and oddities that filled the windows piqued your interest and yet, you did not leave your seat. After all, he did tell you to rest.Â
âIâm so sorry, sir. Your room isnât ready yet. We werenât expecting you for another hour or so.âÂ
âHmm, are there no other rooms available?âÂ
The womanâs thick accent was all you knew of her as MâBakuâs height was blocking any view of her. You shifted in your seat and fully turned your body to peek into the shop. A film camera sat in the window and felt that familiar tingle of inspiration calling you to it. It was a new medium but youâd welcome the challenge. You turned back to see that MâBaku was still preoccupied.
âWe have a couple of beach bungalows available but they are expensi-âÂ
âMoney is no object. How quickly can you have our things moved there?â You shook your head in amusement at MâBakuâs antics with the check-in clerk. How he came into such money was a question that never left your mind, but you wouldnât dare ask him. Why ruin a good thing?
You stood from your seat and as your curiosity got the best of you, you waltzed over into the gift shop. Name keychains, sunglasses, and chocolate bars filled the stands of the shop. But only one vintage camera sat on the checkout stand. Making quick about asking your questions, you decided to purchase it. There were so many ideas you wanted to fulfill through the lens of this camera and you couldnât wait to use up all of the film the gift shop could sell you. Just as you began to pull out your card to pay, you felt strong arms wrap around your waist.
âWhat do you think youâre doing?â Your whole body froze up when you heard his voice.Â
âI was just paying for-â
âPaying for what,â MâBaku grunted, pulling cash out of his pocket, âI will not have it. Surely you know better than that.âÂ
He handed the clerk the money and squeezed your hips and belly, whispering sweet nothings into your ear. You rolled your eyes playfully but relished in his touch.Â
âNewlyweds? We get a lot of them here,â the clerk cleared his throat, securing the camera in wrapping paper before putting it in the bag.Â
âSomething like that,â MâBaku answered, smiling down at you as he grabbed the bag. You couldnât help the grin at his infectious smile.Â
The Beach Bungalow
This is luxury. That was all you could think of while the âlifestyle assistantâ, Georgie, assigned to your bungalow guided you and MâBaku to your home for the next two weeks. The walkway was shaded by towering greenery with peaks of light and small glimpses of the pitons peeking through. The bungalow was slightly secluded and right on the beach, with a wading pool on the side and a sitting patio around back. The hushed tones of the crashing waves could be heard from your front door and you wondered how you would be able to leave once your baecation was over.Â
âHere are your door keys. Should you need anything at all, please do not hesitate to contact me. You can reach me from the bungalowâs iPad.â You whispered a thank you and walked into the living room while MâBaku helped bring in the luggage.
You placed your sandals in the corner of the foyer and set off to explore your new digs. The dark wooden floors were cool beneath your feet and set a stark contrast to the white walls of the residence. The same palm leaf fans from the lobby made an appearance in the living room and hall. Pictures of modern art lined the walls. The decor was simple but beautiful.Â
Once you opened the door to the primary bedroom, you found it littered with gifts. Christian Louboutin boxes on the floor and the easily recognizable blue coloring of the Tiffany boxes on the bed. Stunned, you walked over and swiped your hand over the bows, feeling the ribbons against your palm. A pop of red caught your eye and you turned to see giant bouquets of red roses on the dresser. You stood in awe, holding your hands to your cheeks. You had never seen so many gifts at once. Thoughts of whether or not you deserved all these gifts flashed in your mind and you shooed them away, tears pricking at the corners of your eyes. Doubt would not get the best of you now. You wanted to savor this moment of pure bliss.Â
âThat look on your face is one I will keep with me for my darkest days,â MâBaku cooed, pulling you out of your thoughts.Â
âEmby, thereâs so much. Why all the gifts?âÂ
âI just wanted to show you how much you mean to me, enhle. But if you donât want the giftsâŚâ He trailed off, chuckling at the look on your face.
âYou know I want them!âÂ
âThen open one so that I can put this old tech to good use.âÂ
You shook your head at him as he unwrapped your film camera. You chose a large Tiffany gift bag and flung the tissue paper out of the way. Underneath all the wrapping sat a pink leather crossbody bag with a heart pendant. âPlease Return To Tiffany & Co. New Yorkâ was written on the front and a silver chain hung below it. Your eyes widened at the sight of it and you heard a click of the camera.Â
âOpen another one!âÂ
You and MâBaku had spent an entire week exploring the island. He had created an all-encompassing itinerary full of adventurous activities that absolutely wore you out. Just today, you toured a reclaimed chocolate plantation and saw the most majestic waterfalls. You got into the water at your own pace as you had yet to learn how to even doggy-paddle. But MâBaku was slowly teaching you to swim and though you were a difficult student, he insisted to help you overcome the feat and finally learn. And who were you to say no? You loved being in his strong, burly arms and would jump at the chance to be in them once again.Â
With every outing came the heat of the island. And the heat always resulted in MâBaku shedding layers to keep cool in the sun. It took everything in you to not want to run your hands up and down his sweat-glistened chest on your hike this morning. Or when you visited the cacao factory and watched him rip open a cacao pod with his bare hands, his biceps flexing and catching the attention of other women on the tour. Audible gasps sounded as another group thirsted over him, but you couldnât care less. The lewd sounds he made when he sucked the flesh off of the seeds made your insides writhe and you swore that you could have creamed your shorts right then and there. But MâBaku, being the ever-observant man he was, immediately saw your body language and knew where your mind was; your thighs clasped together, biting your bottom lip and wringing out your hands. He knew exactly what was going on in that pretty little head of yours and had lectured you about âundressing him with your eyesâ. Being a good sugar baby, you listened and nodded your head in agreeance. Yet, that didnât stop you from ogling his 6â5 frame for the rest of the afternoon; hell, most of the photos you had taken on your new film camera were of him. Or of you on top of him.
That night, you and MâBaku had dinner plans at a Saint Lucian restaurant called Montieâs. The beautiful eatery sat on the beach covered with palm fronds. When you walked up, a live band was performing on the open-air deck. The sounds of steel drums and rich tones of singing swam through the tables of people and your body couldnât help but dance to the beat as the two of you walked hand in hand to your table. He pulled out your chair before taking his own and ordered drinks for the table. You clapped along with the rest of the patrons once the band finished their song and the waiter left to grab your refreshments. Turning your attention back to MâBaku, you caught him staring at you. Your face started to heat up under his gaze and you looked down at your hands, smiling.Â
âWhat are you staring at âBaku?â
âIâm simply admiring the beauty on this island, thixokazi wam. Are you enjoying our time here?âÂ
You nodded, sighing in contentment. He pulled a red Cartier box out of his pocket and placed it on the table.Â
âI have also enjoyed my time with you, Oshun,â he said, sliding the box to you, âyou have truly filled my days with joy. Please, open it.â
Opening the box with slightly shaky hands, you found a small gold cowrie shell on a thin chain. The shells that were in your hair. You gently lifted it and watched it turn and shine in the light as it dangled. MâBaku stood from his seat to come behind you. After handing him the necklace, you lifted your hair to aid his view and he placed the chain around your neck; securing the clasp. His hands lingered at the nape of your neck before returning your shell-adorned braids to their original resting place. Your hand shot to your chest and felt the cold metal shell that had made its new home there. Now it was your turn to stare at him in wonderment as he returned to his seat.Â
His smile lit up the room and for a moment, you felt as if the two of you were the only people in the world. The lights were bright but nothing could shine as he did. You had met MâBaku during your search for inspiration and understanding. But you had found so much more. He had become your muse in such a short span of time and in some ways, you became his. Somehow, this man sitting before you, that you barely knew, had stolen your heart; and you could only wonder if you had stolen his in return. Was his tenderness and affection a ploy of the contract that now guided your life? Or could it be something more? You desperately wanted it to be something more and prayed to someone, anyone, that Shellee wasnât right. It wasnât the trips, the gifts, or the allowance that kept you in his grasp. It was him. And as MâBaku sat there, smugly smiling, knowing he had you; you wanted him too.Â
The waiter placing your chocolate martini in front of you brought you back to the present. Releasing a breath you didnât realize you were holding, you wiped the singular tear that hadnât noticed fall.Â
âDid you not like it? Are you alright,â MâBaku questioned with worry overtaking his face. Leaning forward, you held his hand from across the table.
âNo, I love it. Iâm more than alright. This is- everything is perfect.âÂ
After showering, all MâBaku mentioned was that all he wanted to do was rest after dinner. But you had other things in mind.Â
You laid on the couch in your sleep dress with your head on MâBakuâs lap while he got lost in a book. Brown Sugar played on the tv but you found it hard to pay attention to the movie. His hand was rubbing your belly incessantly as he delved more into his story and you could only think about his hand being somewhere else. Shifting underneath his hand, you watched to see if he would somehow read your mind and do as you pleased. And still, his attention stayed on his book. With a small sigh, you decided to take matters into your own hands. Pulling his hand away from your stomach, you placed it on your chest, peering up at him to see how heâd respond. He offered you a quick glance before kneading your breast through the fabric. His book could not cover his smirk when he felt your nipple hard underneath his touch. But you needed more.Â
You sat up with a huff and scooched back until you were seated in his lap. Pecking his lips, you trailed kisses down to his neck, softly biting and nipping at the sensitive area. A content hum left his lips as he continued to read, trying to ignore the uncomfortable strain against his pants as he hardened beneath you. Not letting up from his neck, you moved his free hand underneath your dress and pressed his hand onto your pussy. Desperation overtook your movements as you quickly spread your lips. He felt how wet you were and quickly moved his digits around your clit.Â
âYou just wonât leave me be will you?â MâBaku chuckled as you moaned ânoâ and placed his book down. He held you close to his chest and you rested your cheek against his.Â
âI know exactly what you need, sthandwa.â
He shoved three fingers into your soaking entrance and covered your moans with his lips. His kiss was intoxicating and you slid your tongue across his bottom lip, begging for him to grant you access. Pumping his fingers in and out of you, he pressed his thumb against your clit and you threw your head back in ecstasy. The action threw your body into hyper drive and you could feel your stomach tightening; steadily building a climax...
âFuuuuuck, âBaku, please,â you whimpered. You were practically begging for release as his fingers fucked you dumb. The only thing that existed in your brain at this moment was the man beneath you, whispering praises into your ear.Â
âIyinto yam yonke. Ndiyakuthanda.âÂ
The more he spoke to you in his native tongue, the closer you were. His words felt like a spell he had cast to excise this vivacious coil tightening deep within you; to pleasure you beyond belief. And he was determined to help you release.Â
He held you firmly as he felt your body seize up. One more stroke of his fingers and you were squirting into his hand. The build-up from all the exchanged lustful gazes and loving caresses of the trip was spilling out of you in waves. As your breathing slowed, you watched MâBaku slide his fingers out of you and place them into his mouth, licking the taste of you off of his digits. The sight alone was enough to make you cum again and again.
âMâBaku,â you moaned, dragging out the last syllable in his name. He hooked his arm underneath your knees and stood, effortlessly carrying you as he walked towards the bedroom of the bungalow.Â
âKeep moaning my name like that and we wonât leave this room for the rest of the week.âÂ
âI never get to see stars like this,â you whispered, leaning back into your patio chair; shimmering lights dancing across your vision.Â
The sky was a black canvas and the stars were glittering against it like it was their last chance. MâBaku only hummed in accordance. He had been oddly quiet since you two had finished a third round in the primary room. It was out of character for him and you did your best to lighten the mood.Â
âYou talk to me in your mother tongue a lot. I canât always remember the words but I remember some. What does âizo-kazi wamâ mean?â
MâBaku chuckled and you felt a tinge of embarrassment hearing the words come out of your mouth. You were sure you just butchered the hell out of whatever you just said.
âThixokazi wam,â he corrected, moving his chair closer to yours, âmeans âmy goddessâ. And that is what you are to me, a goddess.â A blush made its way to your face and now you were even more curious.
âWhat about sthandwa, does it mean like baby or something?â
âIt means âmy loveâ.â He placed a hand on your thigh and squeezed it, sending a chill through your body.
âOkay, one more. On the couch earlier, you said something, I know this going to sound horrible. Uh, ndi-ya-ku-thanda?âÂ
MâBaku turned his whole body toward you and sat there with his mouth agape before closing and opening once more; had you butchered it that badly?
âIt means âI love youâ, Oshun.âÂ
Your heart skipped a couple of beats as it sounded loudly in your ears. Looking at the man next to you, you sat there in bewilderment. He took your hand into his and brought it up to his face, placing the sweetest kiss over your knuckles. Tears began to stream down your cheeks as you watched him intently.Â
âMâBakuâŚâÂ
âFalling in love with you was the easiest thing Iâve ever done, sthandwa. I love you with all my being. Please, omncinci, please tell me you love me as well.âÂ
Standing from your chair you watched as he held his arms out to you, welcoming you in. You fell into him and took what felt like your first breath in months. The shoulder of his shirt was soon becoming soaked from your endless tears but you couldnât help it. The light of your life just professed his love to you and was awaiting a response.Â
âI love you too! I was so afraid to tell you,â you sighed into him. MâBaku rubbed large circles into your back, soothing your soft cries.
âDonât ever be afraid to tell me how you feel. I want to know your thoughts, always.âÂ
You sat like that for a few minutes. Wrapped in the embrace of a man that had fallen in love with you, under the stars on an island that you could never have imagined you would be able to visit.Â
âWait, so what happens to the contract? Itâs done, right? Are you moving in full-time?â Your excited questions were met with silence and you sat up to look at his face; to search for answers in his eyes when his mouth had yet to answer.Â
âThe contract would have to be in place for as long as you would have me. With my company, in my home country, I cannot commit to a relationship because of it. But, enhle, when I saw you for the first time I knew that I needed you in my life which is why I pursued the contract,â MâBaku trailed off, watching you stand from his lap.Â
âBut why does your company have anything to do with us? That doesnât make sense, what arenât you telling me,â you questioned in confusion.Â
âThis is all I can give. I could not⌠I cannot give you the loving relationship you desire. The one you deserve. It cannot be enough.âÂ
You held his large face in your hands and wiped away the tear that had escaped from his eye.Â
âIt will, Iâll be fine. Weâll be fine. Everything will be okay. We can just keep the contract.â Your words spilled out in nervous haste as the tears began to stream again. MâBaku brought his hands to hold yours.Â
âUkukhanya kobomi bam, how long will it be enough?âÂ
You couldnât answer. You didnât know how long this contract would be enough to satisfy you after the confession heâd just made. How could he expect you to respond? You could lie to yourself. But after looking into his eyes once more, you knew you couldnât lie to him.Â
âDo not rush yourself. We can speak more about this in the morning. Come.âÂ
The next morning, MâBaku stirred awake and felt around the bed for you, wanting to pull you in close and lull himself back to sleep. But when he couldnât find you by touch, he opened his eyes to find an empty side of the bed. He sat up slowly, stretching his wide arms with a yawn. Throwing his legs over the side of the bed, he slipped on his shorts and got up to find you.Â
After checking every inch of the bungalow, he looked out past the porch and saw you sitting near the soft waves of the beach. He walked over and sat down in the sand next to you silently, not wanting to disturb your thoughts. You immediately reached for his hand and he intertwined his large hand with yours.Â
âI think youâre right,â you whisper with a quivering voice, âI think I deserve something more. I didnât want you to be right.âÂ
Wrapping his arm around you, MâBaku pulled you closer, allowing you to cry into him. He recognized that this may be the last time he gets to hold you; there was so much he wanted to say, but he settled on silence. Words could not change the outcome. Not this time.
