GOOD OMENS

And he remembers—well. It’s not important what he remembers.

We meet the doctors for the first time.

And Dr. Holmes certainly made an entrance.

Not that kind of " wow what a guy " kind of entrance but more the " what the f..." kind of entrance.

But we first meet John, a thing I love and prefer in stories because he is always the best entry into a new story.

Like a really good supporting act on a festival right before the more interesting but arrogant superstar arrives.

John is a warm up who makes you feel cosy and secure and together you wait for the storm.

And the storm arrives indeed.

Dr. Sherlock Holmes new medical superstar a patent already made and sold, is he the new neurosurgeon and within weeks he has a reputation for being rude, difficult and brilliant.

The brilliance is as obvious as the arrogance and John is equally surprised and annoyed.

But he is also a tiny little bit fascinated and is not quite sure why...

They work and clash in the OR one day and while others are intimidated by Sherlock’s behaviour is John simply annoyed and says so.

In a contest of getting the upper hand John is our winner.

We getting glimpses of the real Sherlock a bit later when he proceeds towards John again and ask for help.

Here we see a shy and insecure man who is obviously wrestling with a truth he keeps very well hidden, and we see the huge amount of trust in John approaching him in that matter.

A very moving part and what I call 

a man child moment.

Because Sherlock is a very sensitive person and John is obviously the only one he can go to which makes the moment precious and yet sad.

Sherlock’s confession being on the spectrum is groundbreaking.

For Sherlock, John and the story.

Sherlock is clearly ashamed and telling John this because he needs his help to make a medical failure accusation going away is a huge deal for a man who likes to be seen cold, talented and untouchable.

I love that all the thoughts we readers might have are in John's head too.

John is our conscience, our bond to Sherlock early knotted but unbreakable already.

Together they go and investigate a little to help Sherlock’s case, a case I won't go into detail because if you haven't read the story yet I'm not going to spoil the fun for you.

But the help John offers comes with a payback.

That's at least what Sherlock thinks and acts accordingly and much to John's surprise I might add and to mine:) 

Here we see a first behaviour of Sherlock that seems unusual and inappropriate but it also seems he simply doesn't know better and he doesn't have these natural social skills that forbid us to act in such a direct manner.

No right or wrong or any judgment coming from my side.

This is just what I observed.

And so did John luckily and doesn't give up on Sherlock, although after certain events Sherlock is back at his usual cold self with a brick wall around his emotions.

But good old John finds a way and he also realises that he finds himself attracted to the new neurosurgeon star.

And slowly but constantly they find a way towards each other because Sherlock opens up for the first time and John sees behind the mask of arrogance and indifference.

This first piece sets the standard and the curiosity for more.

I was lucky enough to discover the series after Jill completed it.

So I didn't have to wait lol.

Reading this first part and knowing there will be more makes you wonder what will happen and how this story will heading and you know for sure that you are in for a ride:)

Medical fic recommendations

Watson's War by Boton

Any situation where John performs some serious surgery on Sherlock, on his own.

Maybe Sherlock is seriously wounded, has an internal bleeding, an organ failure, a ruptured appendix. Maybe it happens when John is at work and Sherlock barely manages to get to him (of course he'd do it instead of going to hospital/calling an ambulance). At this point waiting for about 20 minutes until an ambulance arrives is absolutely ruled out, so John immediately starts working....Still it's not exactly ideal, but John is used to performing surgeries in much worse circumstances. And maybe some tools they have would be his second choice or he even has to improvise, not finding what he really needs....

Anyway, he performs the surgery, saves Sherlock's life and keeps him stable until an ambulance arrives.

Rated T for mild language, mentions of blood, and medical procedures.

An accident forces John to face the fact that Sherlock's downward spiral had started long before his flight to exile even left the tarmac.

3. Compartmentalised Troubles by BakerTumblings

John Watson is down on his luck and in financial need, and so he finds a job for a home monitoring company. Next client? Mycroft Holmes.

4. Cold Feet by BakerTumblings

Cold feet:

Literally, the sensation of cool or cold lower extremities.

Metaphorically, the apprehension, doubt, or feelings of anxiety specifically when considering a future event.

Conceivably, a person could have both types of cold feet simultaneously.

5. Electric Pink Hand Grenade by BeautifulFiction

"If Sherlock's brain is a hard drive, then these attacks are an electro-magnetic pulse." Sherlock Holmes does not do anything by half, not even a migraine. It falls to John to witness one of the greatest minds he has ever known tear itself apart, and he must do his best to help Sherlock pick up the pieces.

Hello. I have a specific enquiry. I suspect there is nothing that fits the bill but I thought I’d ask the fount of all knowledge. Do you know of any fics where Sherlock or John has a bad neck or back? Either through injury or chronic illness. I’ve checked out the sick fic lists and done a search on AO3. So if it exists it’s likely not obvious. I’ve read the fantastic Scar Tissue by JBaillier. Owing to some personal issues I’d really like to read some more in similar vein. Thank you so much.

My #1 post of 2022

not a moment to waste

This is for @khorazir​, who prompted “pencil.” Happy Valentine’s Day!

Sherlock is standing by the window. His violin is tucked under his chin. There is a pencil clenched between his teeth. His face is painted with dying sunlight. His eyes are closed.

 John pauses in the entryway, watches as Sherlock's fingers dance along the strings, as his bow draws out honey-sweet notes that seem to quiver in the air.

 Sherlock pauses, sets the bow down. Takes the pencil out of his mouth. Scribbles something on a sheet of paper. Lifts the bow again.

 He is composing.

 The corner of John's mouth pulls into a smile. It has been years since he's seen Sherlock compose. Not since—

 "You're early," Sherlock says. His voice is flat. He does not turn away from the window.

 "Sorry," John says reflexively. "The appointment with the caterers was, um, cancelled. I thought I'd just—but if you're busy, I could—"

 "It's fine."

 John nods, looks down at the ground. "Right. Okay."

 Sherlock makes another note on the paper.

 "That was nice," John says, finally. "What you were just—erm—"

 "Just trying out a few things for the wedding."

 "Right," John says again. He nods. Swallows hard against the lump in his throat, the sinking sensation in his chest. "The wedding."

 "Lots to do," Sherlock says. He draws the bow across the strings, a single, sharp screech. Sets the instrument down.

 "Not that much," John says. He presses his lips together. Waits.

 Sherlock says nothing. He picks up the pencil again, makes another notation on the paper. The pencil tip snaps. He swears, tosses it aside. His hands, John realises, are trembling.

 "Sherlock," John says.

 "Not a moment to waste, really," Sherlock says. He opens the desk drawer, rummages around inside.

 "If you could just—"

 "For God's sake—" Sherlock wrenches the desk drawer out entirely, pens and paper clips and bits of crumpled paper and what look suspiciously like dried earwigs scattering across the carpet.

 "Sherlock!" John says, well and truly alarmed now. He crosses the room, puts his hand on Sherlock's arm.

 Sherlock jerks away as if burned.

 "Sher—" John starts, and then stops. Sherlock's eyes are wild, red-rimmed and pained. He is breathing in short, stuttering little gasps that he seems to be struggling, mightily, to stifle.

 "You're early," Sherlock says, and his voice is wrong, all wrong. "I meant to be done with this by the time you—it's—"

 "Don't worry about the wedding," John blurts. "It's—there's not going to be any wedding. All right?"

 Sherlock goes very still.

 "Mary and I are—we talked about it—and we're just not—it's not—" John blows a frustrated breath out through his teeth. "I don't want to. Get married."

I would be very grateful if you would recommend a fic or fics where John rescues Sherlock from kidnap or imminent danger. I really like Elwingire ��How To Unfold a Heart”. Something more in that vein would be very welcome indeed. Thank you so much. And only as your time permits of course.

Reply: I feel like you are the same person who asked for fics where John "saves the day" and weren't satisfied with my response (although elwinglyre's fic was in that collection). So, here is my second attempt. I'm sure there are a lot more, but this is what I've come up with for now:

John rescues Sherlock

Between Friends by SilentAuror (18K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock gets abducted. As John discovers him tied up naked in an empty storage facility and comes to rescue him, Sherlock's body has an unfortunate reaction which triggers a series of events.

hands full of matter by simplyclockwork (21K, E, Johnlock) When Sherlock is captured in Serbia, Mycroft cannot afford to involve the British government in his rescue. Instead, he sends John.

How to Unfold a Heart by elwinglyre (25K, E, Johnlock) Past horrors return unexpectedly in a cryptic note folded in the shape of a heart. To decipher the message, Sherlock must uncover the nature of the hearts around him, including his own.

Red Apples by naughtyspirit (21K, E, Johnlock) John and Sherlock work on a new case where the perpetrator seems overly fond of Grimm fairytales.

Summit Fever by J_Baillier (78K, M, Johnlock, past Jolto) After graduating from medical school, John Watson followed his heart to the Himalayas. Ten years later, he's a haunted cynic working for his ex-lover's trekking and mountaineering company.

The Night Riviera from Paddington to Penzance and Back Again by Iwantthatcoat (12K, M, Johnlock) Mrs Hudson has decided her boys need a little vacation way from London. Devil's Foot adaptation.

To Be Human by ohlooktheresabee (78K, T, Johnlock) There is a serial killer on the loose with a penchant for collecting the brains of his victims. Something about the chosen victims has Sherlock on edge.

Underground Rescue by khorazir (48K, M, Johnlock) When Sherlock goes missing, John has to play detective to find him.

Whiteout by sincewhendoyoucallme_John (37K, M, Johnlock) A documentary crew follows the Matterhorn aerial rescue team from Air Zermatt, profiling the mechanics, pilots, and paramedics as they save patients on the infamous mountain.

Winter's Storm by LoloLolly (51K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock is kidnapped and tortured by his previous captors.
