The Deep Webb
A YTP of NASA's 2022 live presentation showcasing the first images taken from the James Webb Space Telescope.
This monumental feat of human discovery was presented to the world in the form of a scuffed livestream where technical errors abound and production repeatedly failed to think on their feet to remedy issues as they came up. Peppered with some charmingly awkward/out-of-touch performances by the various presenters, most of which are astronomers and engineers whom I have the deepest respect for despite it all.
I watched this event as it was broadcast and immediately knew it would make for an excellent YTP source. I was so very correct, and my biggest regret was sitting on it for two years rather than working with it immediately.

Volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io keep erupting. To investigate, NASA's robotic Juno spacecraft has begun a series of visits to this very strange moon. Io is about the size of Earth's moon, but because of gravitational flexing by Jupiter and other moons, Io's interior gets heated and its surface has become covered with volcanoes. The featured image is from last week's flyby, passing within 12,000 kilometers above the dangerously active world. The surface of Io is covered with sulfur and frozen sulfur dioxide, making it appear yellow, orange and brown. As hoped, Juno flew by just as a volcano was erupting -- with its faint plume visible near the top of the featured image.

A planet relatively close to Earth could be the first ever detected with a potentially life-sustaining liquid ocean outside our Solar System, according to scientists using the James Webb space telescope. More than 5,000 planets have been discovered outside of the Solar System so far, but only a handful are in what is called the "Goldilocks zone" -- neither too hot or too cold -- that could host liquid water, a key ingredient for life. The exoplanet LHS 1140 b is one of the few in this habitable zone, and has been thoroughly scrutinized since it was first discovered in 2017.

Of course Saturn brought its ring light.
On June 25, 2023, our James Webb Space Telescope made its first near-infrared observations of Saturn. The planet itself appears extremely dark at this infrared wavelength, since methane gas absorbs almost all the sunlight falling on the atmosphere. The icy rings, however, stay relatively bright, leading to Saturn’s unusual appearance in this image.
This new image of Saturn clearly shows details within the planet’s ring system, several of the planet’s moons (Dione, Enceladus, and Tethys), and even Saturn’s atmosphere in surprising and unexpected detail.
These observations from Webb are just a hint at what this observatory will add to Saturn’s story in the coming years as the science team delves deep into the data to prepare peer-reviewed results.
Download the full-resolution image, both labeled and unlabeled, from the Space Telescope Science Institute.

JWST recently released a raw image of Saturn, which looks incredible. But it also means that its gas giant collection is complete!!
Bask in their gaseous glory and Webb's stellar performance!

i've been doing an astronomy internship this summer, and we recently talked about the space telescopes! wanted to personify some of them hehe.
James Webb (they/them): Their shiny poncho thing is inspired by the solar shield. They have a rivalry with Hubble, believing him to be obsolete. However, they secretly are worried they won't be able to live up to his legacy.
Hubble (he/him): His glasses represent the COSTAR instrument that was installed on Hubble to correct it's blurry images. He finds James Webb's attempt at a rivalry amusing, and just wants to become friends with the younger fella and help them out.
Nancy Grace Roman (she/her): A telescope not yet launched, she's an old NRO telescope, and is having trouble adjusting from a life of espionage to one of science.

i’m just blown away by the detail in these images- jwst never ceases to amaze me.
you can find the full resolution images of each of these galaxies in the official release here - i highly recommend looking through each of them, they’re STUNNING.
