With the LBMR Manga having ended today, a large group of us are putting together a small appreciation tag for the manga artist, Tellmin, as well as Level-5! Our goal is to flood the tag "#ThankYouTellmin" on Twitter with art and appreciation!

However, to make the strongest impact, we are planning for all submissions to be posted in one week, at the same time of release the manga chapter normally releases at!

One Piece Live Action Casting Predictions

We know more announcements for casting will be coming over the next two days - possibly three days (10 pm JPT | 9 am EST). This isn't a 'who I think will be cast' post but a rather what I think will be announced in those two days:

Thursday: Logue Town + Drum Island

This is Smoker, Tashigi, Dragon*, Dr. Kureha, VA for Chopper, Hiriluk, Wapol, and Dolton

*With Dragon I can see it either or on if they announce his casting but I'm putting him on my predictions to be safe.

Friday: Alabasta

This is Crocodile, Robin, Vivi, Ace, Cobra, Igramm, Pell, Chaka, Koza, Bon Clay, and the upper network of Baroque Works

Friday's prediction is a big ass group, I can easily see it being shorten to Crocodile, Robin, Vivi, Ace, Cobra, and Baroque Works

Many are theorizing that Friday will be the big reveal day so I can see the VA for Chopper being pushed to Friday instead on Thursday, and with that I'd switch him and Ace. It's also why I'm putting Alabasta casting on Friday as it makes sense given saving most excited for for last

IBO reference notes on . . . spacesuits

For reasons that may or may not be related to fanfic, I decided to do a quick survey of the difference spacesuits -- or 'normal suits', in Gundam parlance -- that appear throughout Iron-Blooded Orphans. There's not really much to conclude from this, but it snagged me a set of reference screenshots that I think worth collating for your viewing pleasure.

The most commonly used normal suit first appears during the battle between Tekkadan and the Turbines, where Atra helps Kudelia out with putting one on, in a scene that provides some gratuitous shots of the girls changing. It's not especially tasteless, in the grand scheme of things, but it's one of those genre trappings that didn't really need to be there. Still, it provides a good demonstration of how the suits fit together, where the zippers and fastenings are, and so on. Plus the hilarious visual of the helmets being repurposed as potato buckets.

This normal suit is clearly a standard type, that turns up in multiple civilian and non-official military settings. Most immediately, we see that the Turbines use it, the orange swapped for a fetching maroon.

Generally speaking, the colour-blocking is the only thing to change between uses. Here are a couple more shots showing the Tekkadan and Turbines versions, including a close-up on the boots.

Beyond these two types, the most usual variant is a black and grey version that appears in various scenarios, including in the flashbacks to Akihiro's family, the Dort colonies, and the archaeologists in Urdr Hunt.

Curiously, Katya also wears this towards the end of Urdr Hunt -- where she must have been given it by Gjallarhorn. So can we take the black, grey and white to be a sort of universal default?

Other colour variants are worn by young!Amida and by Range (under his poncho) in Urdr Hunt, and by the various groups of mercenaries and space-pirates in Season 2.

Speaking of pirates, the ones who attacked Akihiro's family have added a jetpack for easy manoeuvring in zero-g. It's notable that this isn't something we see more generally: Mikazuki has to rely on a hand-held thruster in the Dorts. This, however, harkens back more to the original Gundam series in terms of moving around in space.

Moving on to the second major 'civilian' normal suit, the human debris all wear a slightly simpler, slightly more badly-fitted white version striped in red. We first see this with the Brewers and later with human debris used by the JPT Trust (not shown because it's mainly seen in fairly bloody scenes).

A palette-swap of this is used by 598 and his crew in Urdr Hunt, which I bring up as an excuse to post the bisexual-energy screenshot.

Due to image limits, I won't cover Tekkadan's pilot suit in this post. If you've seen the show, you'll have seen a lot of that, and of Gjallarhorn's equivalent. What I find interesting about the human debris normal suit is that it is clearly more closely related to the general-purpose version than what Shino is wearing here, which is a specialised for an Alaya-Vijnana-user in a military setting.

This of course makes sense given that everything about the human debris is meant to invoke cheapness. Rather than a custom-made battle suit, they just get a standard one-size-fits-nobody get-up with an A-V adaptor stuck on the back. It's a nice visual touch, that also helps emphasise the sense of human debris as little kids forced into situations they shouldn't be in. That being said, the *helmet* is distinctly made for a mobile suit pilot, being something close to what Gjallarhorn soldiers wear.

Tekkadan does use another distinct normal suit variant, with added armour, that shows up for the battle with the Brewers and never again. Or, well, I am not actually sure if this is meant to be a normal suit or more akin to the combat armour we see Gjallarhorn infantry wearing, or if that is a distinction without a difference. Since they are both deployed in space-based operations, we can probably assume they're at least potentially interchangeable with normal suits.

These do notably lack the backpack of the standard normal suit. which I take to be where the life-support gubbins goes. However that goes for the pilot suit as well (it only has the A-V adaptor block; I assume everything else is distributed at the waist and collar) and we see it functioning fine for spacewalks. So I'm grouping this in here as well.

As I said up the top of the post, there's not a whole lot to take away from this, beyond the different ways the same asset is reused throughout the series. It's a neat enough design, although the pilot suits are far more striking. I do like the pirates' jetpack; wish we'd seen more of that (that's actually what I was looking up when I started collecting these).

Overall, I quite like the commonality of design, the sense that someone somewhere is just mass producing these things as a standard piece of kit. That's kind of what you'd need, in a space-faring society, to make these widely available to as many people as possible, just as a matter of basic practicality. Then you'd have different groups that could afford it customising to fit their organisations.

Huh. That must mean the human debris normal suits are also mass produced, if there's a standard-issue version of those.

There we go again with another demonstration of the base-level exploitative awfulness built into this setting.

3/18/24 "Tanpopo" JPT 3391

I watched "Tanpopo" two and a half times because of how initially absurd it appeared to me. I was hellbent on figuring out what it was trying to say, because I saw a connection but I didn't know what it was.

Tanpopo on Ego and Defiance:

I left this movie with the impression of a commentary on hard work, ego, and a discourse on professionalism. Tanpopo really screams at the watcher that anybody can be a 'professional' at something, while simultaneously begging the question of what a 'professional' even is. "Tanpopo" pokes fun at those who think they know how to make/eat the perfect ramen, while simultaneously praising and building up the main character, who initially didn't even know how to cook well, into a ramen connoisseur! Our main character is called Tanpopo, meaning dandelion (perhaps related to her being a symbol of courage, strength, and perseverance, as it's a weed). She starts as an ambitious but inexperienced cook, who instead of becoming upset or discouraged by critique, runs with it, ending the movie with a transformed look, a transformed shop, and a new ramen recipe ("Tanpopo ramen"), signifying her transition into a professional. The film critiques the ego of the professional ramen cooks who don't accept criticism and refuse to share knowledge, showing that there is not necessarily a 'proper' way to do things (such as eat ramen or slurp), but instead several good options that one needs to explore themselves. So then, what is a professional? What I took from this movie is that it is somebody who is skilled at their craft, willing to take critique, and willing to share their knowledge with others.

But if that's it, then what were all those strange cutaway scenes about? I initially evaluated Tanpopo as an absurdist comedy- and in a sense, I still feel like it's absurdist! But, to me, the nuance comes from the way in how it conveys it's themes- using several unrelated and comical scenes that share one unified message of defiance! The old woman poking holes in produce, the homeless man who broke into a kitchen just to cook a tasty omurice, the group of girls slurping noodles WAYY too loudly, the employee that stuns his superiors by ordering a high quality dish, and the couple that... has sex using a shrimp? (gross). All of these scenes involve breaking a mold some way or another, with food as their medium. Rebellion, whether ethical or not, revealed itself as a reflection of Goro's character, who watches Tanpopo defy social norms as a solo female ramen chef and was passionate to help her surpass her 'professional' rival cooks.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to loop all of these scenes together as one. The man who ate the oyster sexually from the girl's hand, the man that forced his wife to cook dinner until she died, and the man who died from a gunshot wound speaking of roast pig (ironically, while leaning on a pig), were all unknowns to me.

Food used as a storytelling device:

This movie took something as "simple" as ramen (and other foods) and turned them into an art form, a story, and thus a movie. While it may have not been the director's intention, I left Tanpopo with an appreciation for the mundane, whether it be ramen, cereal, or a walk in the park, and I appreciated what I felt was people using one small object in order to tell a complicated story about growth and change.

Character Shenanigans:

I was a fan of Goro, the most prominent side character of the film. There was a very obvious cowboyish western feel to his character, including the cow horns on his truck (steed?), him almost always keeping that damn cowboy hat on, his penchant for a tussle, and him disappearing without a word at the end, despite saving the town from peril.

Did anybody else get a Seven Samurai feel? I know there were only 5 'helpers', but if you could Tanpopo and her son, then that makes seven! Anyways, not sure if that was just me or done on purpose, but each man helped Tanpopo in her own way.

There's a wonderful image on pixiv somewhere that has Flauros' cockpit absolutely covered in sticky notes Yamagi left for Shino to tell him what all the controls do. Post-its might not be canon but I am pretty sure this is on the money for how Shino's technical education in that thing went.

And I forgot the paints were priced that way. Actually, hold on. How does that work out?

Gundams -- mostly white, makes sense, wartime and all that. We've got a few full coats of reds and darker colours in there too, but that doesn't appear to be the norm and I assume Gremory being black is more due to the nano-laminate coat than paint?

Gjallarhorn -- expensive colours, various blues and greens though generally not that dark unless we're talking older Geirail models. The Venus branch got maroon, which indicates the amount of investment Gjallarhorn puts into that place (e.g. not much).

The Turbines -- Amida's pink suddenly makes a lot of sense if those colours are cheaper, because she was using them long before she was part of a big group. Similar rationale to Shino, wanting to be distinctive on a budget. By contrast, Lafter and Azee fly expensively coloured mobile suits; indeed, the Teiwaz default is blue, which reads like a bit of a power move. Especially since --

JPT Trust -- blacks and purples. Jasley swinging his wallet around, but not *too* much.

Tanto Tempo -- blacks and blues. Being from the Earth-sphere, they're clearly better off than most.

The Dawn Horizon Corps -- surprisingly economical for their ace models, favouring white and bright colours. Seems the money went on the mooks and their duller colours.

The Brewers -- again, kind of flexing with the greens.

Zan Clan -- absolutely not going for subtle with whites, pinks and yellows.

Rakou Pirates -- likewise with their oranges. I'm kind of sensing a pattern where the criminals and pirates want to be seen coming.

Tekkadan -- Mainly seem to take what they can get, but it does seem like all the colours are on the cheaper side. They repaint the Rodis in orange and white, which would be lower cost than the original green, and I think the blue on Barbatos would be their biggest expenditure (and there isn't even much of it). The Shidens match too well to the Isaribi for me to think that could have been down to anything other than there being a lot of purple hanging around the CGS!

Weekly Yuru-tetsu~ This one was a ‘special edition,’ and IIRC it was published on Valentines Day! Y: This time I would like to introduce you to Flauros. Y: This mobile suit was discovered by chance at the exploration site of the Mars Half Metal Mine. It was in sleep mode when we first discovered it. S: That’s my gundam! The Ryusei-Go! Y: It was white when we found it, but when we refurbished it on Saisei, we went to the trouble of changing it to the color that Shino wanted. S: I paid for that out of my own pocket tho! It cost quite a bit!* Y: You need to study harder, Shino. Y: It is also equipped with a railgun that can fire special bullets. S: The Galaxy Cannon!! I didn’t know how to use it, so I had Yamagi teach me! Y: You need to study harder, Shino. Y: ……Its most significant feature is transformation to shelling mode. By anchoring the fuselage to the ground it allows to improve stability during bombardment… S: I seriously didn’t even know that! I was just using it out of the blue! Y: You need to study harder, Shino!

*This ties to the mini drama which was read on stage during the Last Flag fan event. I believe it was later recorded for the official CD drama release, but I’m not sure. The story is about Ride hoarding money to buy sweets for the younger kids, because Orga praised him for that. Shino complains that he’s broke and if Ride has some extra he could lend him. Atra accuses Shino he must have spent all of his money on girls, to which Shino reacts with some hurt feelings that she would judge him like that when he’s not even doing that often anymore, and that he’s actually sent all of his money to Yamagi for the paint for his new gundam!

Since 2020, we evolved from ranking reveals to everything else Pinoy with a Eurovision touch. As a team under The Philippine Eurovision Group (TPEG), we had two viewing parties, one online meetup, and two podcast team meetups. In addition, we conducted a lot of ranking reveals, both ESC and JESC, the next one is the JESC 2022 Ranking Reveal.

Relationships in all forms were also created outside JPT, and I love to see how this group became a family and a safe space for Pinoy Eurofans as this was also our main objective in JPT.

someone HALP I’ve been trying to use SnowStorm’s Custom Icons for Accessories tutorial but on some sideburns. I really want to be able to have some facial hair with a custom icon/thumbnail so I can see what the heck I am putting on a sim. But! The tutorial is not working. I’d assumed that a tutorial to include a custom icon for a facial accessory would be similar (and applicable) to that for facial hair, but maybe I’m wrong? I’ve done everything the tutorial says - the icon is added to the file in SimPE as a  jpg/png/tga image, copied the Group id from a 3IDR file and added it to the jpt/tga/png Image resource, dragged the image over to the  3D ID Referencing File (3IDR) and committed, fixed the Binary Index... WHAT GIVES. ETA 2/24: @goingsimcrazy added some very useful comments and I am going to do some investigation on this, and see if this is possible: I think maybe some of the info is different. Sideburns use TextureOverlay and not MeshOverlay, and the layering in the 3DIR is different. The Iconidx counts the placement in the 3DIR the icon is in. I'm not entirely sure if you can have custom thumbs for beards/sideburns. I've never seen it, but you can always try, though. The "Texture overlay" ones are not quite the same as accessories - they're more like a meshed (or not?) overlay of sorts, depending on whether there is a mesh or if there's just a texture overlay. Most of them are just texture overlays. Some of the beards are kind of "hybrids", at least the EAxis ones.
