“Hero by day mysterious woman by night we have gotten a chance to meet the new pro hero Angela,” A woman says on Emily’s screen

Emily walks to a cat cafe cause she needs something cute in life

“Welcome to JP Entertainment I’m Ayaka Wild Where we spread our opinion on the drama while also spreading it ourselves,” Ayaka says as an intro screen plays

Emily was never interested in drama because she knew damn well she was the drama

Wherever Emily goes she has to know every little detail about everything thing interesting or she will explode

A waitress goes to her table where a cat pops up next to her and sits on her lap

“Hello I would like a mango boba tea with a mochi donuts please?” Emily asks and the waitress writes it down

“Okay and would you like to donate a dollar to charity?” The waitress asks

“No- Ouch!” Emily looks down and notes that the cat poked at her hand

“I mean Yes,” Emily says and took out a dollar to give to the waitress

“I’m not a fan of children and I quite frankly don’t care if they die cause they’re poor or cause they’re abused. Shoulda died at the womb makes life easier for them,” Emily says to the cat while holding it up

The cat pokes Emily again making Emily pout.

“Meow if you think I’m being a jerk right now,” Emily commands

“Meow,” Someone else says and the cat Meows right back

Emily looks to her left and sees a gorgeous BLACK guy next to her looking at her in disgust

“ZAAAAMMMMNNN~ Who is that?” Emily asks watching the guy walk by

Emily was intrigued by him but then remembers the show that was playing

“Angela has have this thing for keeping her identity a secret to the whole world,” Ayaka says

“ Probably a p*rn star,” Another guy says

“Jett what tells you she could be a p*orn star? I mean she obviously knows what she knows what she’s doing I mean look at her causing chaos. She obviously knows how to be a terrible hero,” Ayaka says laughing with Jett

“Well obviously, since this girl isn’t even made for the job I mean look at her do she even know her times tables. Not only that have you seen those shaky legs what dirty buissness have she been doing to for her legs to be shaking while standing still,” Jett explains while Ayaka looks at her in shock and Emily looks at them both in disbelief

“Never would I have ever thought I a person would look at me a say p*rn star,” Emily says to herself

“She could probably be the Allison chick you know from that j pop group. I mean didn’t she model for play boy at some point?” Ayaka asked

“Yeah your right besides they both have big personalities so why not it be Allison,” Jett suggested and Ayaka rolled her eyes

“ So you think just anybody with a curvy body could be her? How perverted of you to look at her that way,” Ayaka says crossing her arms

“Yeah Jett that’s very perverted of you,” Emily says and the waitress hands her the food

“Thank you,” Emily says making a mini heart with her fingers

Emily sees the smoke and fans it with her Sensu fan

“Wait a minute I know that fan you was here before wasn’t you?” The waitress asked Emily not noticing her angry reaction

“You left without paying the last time,” The waitress says and Emily turns towards her

Emily touches her arm and looks at her name tag

“Sakura why would I ever steal from a friend. I mean we’ve known each other since high school. Besides your the one that said I can keep the money,” Emily lies as the color violet circles her eyes

“Why would I-“ Emily interrupts Sakura

“Because we are friends now I hope you understand why I didn’t have to pay you then and even now,” Emily says and Sakura blinks multiple amounts of times

“Wait what are you doing?” Emily asks when she just suddenly collapsed on the ground

Emily was still holding her arm and she just let go

Sakura was coughing out blood nonstop

Emily called for 911 while more waiters and waitress went to help

The cat that was with Emily jumped onto Sakura and tried licking her head

“What the hell was going on?” Emily asked

Friday night

“Oh so now you think your the reason she’s possibly dead?” Hawks asked and Emily nodded

Emily (so far) has never killed anyone before because it was a scary thing for her to do

Emily was scared that she committed a murder and Hawks held her hand

“I just don’t want to go to jail right when everything was going good,” Emily admits and looks at him in fear

“Don’t use this quirk on people is you expect an outcome like this,” Hawks told her

“But that’s the whole point I didn’t know all this would happen cause it takes three times for a person to go insane,” Emily explains

“Well maybe she tried fighting back and in return she broke her brain,” Hawks says and Emily looks at him confused

“God no one knows what happened and how it happened it’s just…off?” Emily worriedly says and looks away from him

It was quiet for a few seconds but then…

“Hey have you heard what happened on JP Entertainment?” Hawks asked as the waiter gave them both their plates off food

“Yeah they called me a-“ Emily got distracted by the fact that the waiter had on a blue cat head with matching gloves

Emily and Hawks were speechless because of what they saw

“What? don’t act like you’ve never seen a person with a cat head before,” The waiter said and walked off

Emily recognized that voice as the same guy who worked at the restaurant

Only because she heard that he got fired

“Continue,” Emily said coming back to her senses

”JP Entertainment has just nominated for the hottest person award and us for being the hottest couple,” Hawks says with such confidence Emily rolls her eyes

“Hottest person that’s extreme (ᵉᵛᵉⁿ ᵗʰᵒᵘᵍʰ ⁱᵗ’ˢ ᵗʳᵘᵉ) But still we literally just started dating and we’re considered the hottest couple even if they don’t know?“ Emily was confused but of course Hawks looked like he was loving the situation

“So I see you want to continue these dates~“ Hawks says in a flirtacious way while Emily cringes

“Nope not at all,“ Emily thinks

“ Yo of course and especially after you still consoled me even if I possibly killed someone. So just know I ain’t leavin’ you that easily,“ Emily with fake hearts in her eyes

“Where did you get that accent from?“ Hawks asked

“What accent?“ Emily asked but then Hawks got a call

Meanwhile Emily looked away and saw cat face dude take off his mask while sitting in an empty seat

Emily was mesmerized while looking at him

“Why do these men got me acting like this?“ Emily thinks to herself putting her face in her hand

“Hey Emily I’m sorry but I have to go,“ Hawks says in a disappointed voice

“Wait what? But we just got our food,“ Emily says confused as to why he’s leaving

“I’m sorry but work stuff turns out a criminal was spotted somewhere and I gotta be there,“ Hawks says then leaves her there

“Guess your having a fun time too aren’t you,“ Kenji says just randomly appearing in a seat across from her

“Kenji I actually am really sorry about you losing your job but I just wasn’t gonna pay-“ Kenji interrupted her

“Relax it’s fine. I just needed that job so I’d live a much more normal life. Cause being an assassin is B.S in real life,“ Kenji admitted leaning back against

“ Word cause I knew the stuff going on was like greusome but ’bout to become every horror movie killer combined,“ Emily says oddly enough connecting to him

“ Still after that freak accident didn’t think you would want to come and join us,“ Kenji says and starts eating the remainder of Hawks plate

“Why the hell not when the pay is hella good. Makes me consider actually staying,“ Emily admits which surprises him

“Stayin wit’ us was decision to make before you joined. Now you stuck wit’ us like how you stuck wit’ your little birdie friend,“ Kenji jokes when Emily blurts out something

“ As long as I’m with you I don’t see and problem with staying in the defenders,“ Emily playfully admits and Kenji swallows hardly

“What now?“ Kenji asked blushing a little

“Let me be real with you I liked you ever since I first met you cause you liked to take charge. You being handsome was the extra ten you needed to be a 20 out of 10~“ Emily blindly admits and turns pink entirely

They were actually both quiet when Kenji suddenly started laughing

“I’m so sorry it just what came to mind I-I didn’t mean to say it out loud,“ Emily says embarrassingly

“Don’t worry it’s and to be honest wit you the has been less borin ever since you’ve joined~“ Kenji says with a smirk and Emily blushes even harder

“Wow um so like will you go out with me?“ Emily asked

“Thought it was obvious,“ Kenji said with one eyebrow up

Emily gulped hard and just thought to herself

“Yep I truly know how to get any guy I want,“ Emily thought to herself

Years later

“You’re always getting yourself into weird situations and then your actually proud of having two boyfriends,” Courtney says finishing writing up her questions

“Well back then you know me and Hawks weren’t really a real thing so like why not get a real boyfriend since I decided to change from dating girls to guys,” Emily said lowering her voice on the last part

“How many girls have you dated?” Courtney asked and Emily was quiet

“W-w-well there’s actually t-too much to count,” Emily rubs the back of her neck

“Too much to count? You was 19 how many people did you date?” Courtney asked

“Okay it was one but let’s not go crazy over that-“ Emily was stopped by Courtney

“That’s not important right now what’s important is for me to understand is what happened to the supposedly dead girl?” Courtney asked and Emily’s face turned white

“Well you see that’s a story for another time,” Emily says

“What the hell you mean another time? We have 30 minutes EXPLAIN!” Courtney demanded

“Fine I’ll continue just know it’s not gonna make sense,” Emily gave in and continued her story

k-baiting

If you can't bait them, join them?

One of the studies I was very interested in back in grad school was peer-reviewed journals about Korean pop culture. As a fan of 2ne1, Coffee Prince, and other aged content pieces, I have seen how the "K Drug" seeped into my system. At first, the happy high meant binge-watching because Korean dramas have a certain beat and vibe that's so addictive. K Pop is on a whole different level. The sound engineers seem to hail from the Korean version of Mount Olympus.

I don't know a single word, but, the beats are pulsating, literally and figuratively. This is coupled with aesthetics which is a stark contrast to MTV which was highly popular then. Seeing the first and second waves of MV (music videos) from Korea meant crazy outfits, quirky dance steps, and most importantly, the Asian genes that allow the artists to be playful and magnetic, all at once.

It so happens that another tenet of this innocent indulgence is how Korean pop culture has redefined the standards of beauty and how relationships unfold. While there are romcoms that sell out tickets in the cinema, watching the boys and girls of Korea impacted the standards of dating in the Philippines. The glossy image of the romantic men needed more. The sharp shift from macho men to girly boys translated to debatably unrealistic standards among women that didn't exist on a grand scale compared to the previous eras.

There's something about binge-watching that converts women to believe that Koreans are the go-to knights in shining armor. Though the shift was sharp, it took a bit more time to be in a full and unapologetic state.

When I rewatched Coffee Prince, I cringe. Romantic relationships are more formulaic and horrific. The power struggles are very profound and disgusting. Don't get me wrong. It's not that I loathe this era of mine. I guess this is just the more sensible me, at most times. I guess that while I still go all out on winning the lottery for 2ne1's concert in Japan, I can't unsee how the idols have to window dress to the nines in the name of crafting a story based on consumerism. That's it!

Now, I no longer indulge that much in anything Korean, except for a few ones like Parasite and The Glory. I'm still not able to cut ties with this sphere, however, I can clearly see that while Korea is so up there, its ugly truths remain stronger. As for the part tackling romantic connections, we'll see. Will I be able to unsee the weird thinking, being, and doing, for a change? Will I go beyond the social constructs that are seeping into my defunct and avoidant system? More importantly, will the Korean wave be but another laughable and highly enjoyable part of my system? Or will this era be done and over soon?

But, let me push this discussion a bit more. What makes me cringe about K-pop cult in general is it's but a showcase of the class struggles. While I tune into Rotten Mango, the shitshow in the real lives of Koreans, especially women and children are fucked to the nines. Most people see the bridge between Korean fantasy and reality. I see a very broken one, a non-existent one to begin with. Heck. The fact that the chaebols determine the GDP of the country is just too pathetic. Korea is a land of ugly divorces, families killing each other for wealth, and suicide because of bullying and being bankrupt. As I'm keying these in, I can't help but shake my head so early this Sunday morning.

K-pop cult is indeed a designed drug tailored to make the world see how it's totally okay not to be okay. As they say, when a nation's art booms, chances are, its societal stance is compromised. The more grandiose the art pieces are, the more constricted the people become. Art is a release, and perhaps a surrender, too.

Or maybe I'm just so troubled over the very slim chance of getting a ticket for the upcoming 2ne1 concert in JP. LOL. Kidding aside, what 2ne1 had to go through just because of the social constructs that the Koreans live with and keep up with is not just brutal. It's inhumane.

What's next? I guess, I'd have to plug in my constant choice not to relapse and give in to the K drug. By that I mean, it's okay to binge-watch and consume Korean flavors, however, let this also be a reminder that while the Philippines is a shit hole, it's better than Korea in terms of hanging onto humanity. But, this is a whole new debate that I won't cover for now.

PS: Hirap mag-English ng may sense lalo 'pag weekends. But, we're here na, so ano na? Kaya pa ba, mhiemahhhh? Kaya pa ba or gawa ka na lang ng isa pang space na para talaga sa Comm Arts at BusComm kaganaps? Gusto ko na lang muna mag-chil and bed rot. Hahahahaha. Lekat. Panget pa nung structure nito, pero forever drafts naman tayo, always. EMS.

Because of this, he’s pretty well-known in the 3 worlds and knows a heck lot of different people

Also has a beautiful voice, the kind you’d want to listen to in an ASMR, podcast, audiobook, etc.

Then again do you really expect God’s voice to have anything other than a beautiful voice?

He’s also Uriel’s younger twin brother

While Uriel is more akin to the cool and comforting countenance of the moon, Gabriel has the blazing warmth of the sun

Perpetually smiling, but each smile holds different meanings depending on how big it is, if there was any crookedness to it, if he showed his teeth, etc.

His close friends and family can usually tell which smile is which, but it’s his twin that can ALWAYS tell whatever mood he was in even just from analyzing his smile

Most of the time however, that smile hides a rambunctious imp that particularly likes playing tricks on anyone and everyone

He enjoys freaking people out and relishes the reactions they make. The more exaggerated the reaction, the better

That time Big G talked to Moses by going into that burning bush? It was Gabriel’s bright idea

Seriously though, that memory of him freaking out is one of Gabriel’s most treasured moments

Although truth be told, his all-time favorite reactions are the ones he least expected

One of his favorite pastimes is trying to coax a surprised reaction out of Uriel, seeing as his brother was normally so stone-faced

He feels that it’s his divine mission to get as many reactions out of Uriel as he can

He enjoys tormenting Raphael as much as he enjoys mentoring their youngest brother on how to speak effectively

A master of the art of speaking, so he knows every manner of using one's voice no matter what their intended outcomes were

Whether it's to soothe, anger, or seduce someone, Gabriel knows them all

But he asks a price for his services. You have to call him "Big Brother" sweetly if you want to even remotely get his attention for whatever favor you plan on asking him

Gabriel enjoys teasing others aside from pranking them

The flustered reactions he gets is always a nice treat

Don’t get him wrong though, he enjoys messing with others but it’s all light-hearted fun on his end and is never done with any intended malice

Rather, he actually makes sure that he never touches upon sore spots for anyone

He’s just a prankster, not an asshole

Out of the seven virtues, he also the one who still gets in touch the most with Lucifer and his brothers

He is a messenger after all so it’s a given he sends and receives messages the most

With how many prophecies, signs, and dreams he has to deliver Gabriel is almost always out and about. So he’s actually the one who’s least present in the celestial realm

You’d usually catch him on the rare times where he’s on break or in-between deliveries

Sometimes when he’s in need of a little entertainment during assignments, he’d spice up his deliveries by changing the method of delivering the messages

Like perhaps he was supposed to give a human a sign from Big G through a dream, but that’s so old-school so instead he delivers it when they’re wide awake and by themselves

He can’t possibly pinpoint the fact why some humans went to loony bins after he delivered their messages

P.S. They thought they went mad because of those “divine hallucinations”

A chaotic force of nature in all his white-haired, molten chocolate goodness

Like the rest of his brothers, he enjoys spoiling Azrael in the way normal big brothers spoil their younger siblings

Obligatory noogies, random wrestling moves, cheek pinching, etc.

An advocate of "No one can bully my siblings except me"

Frequently gets souvenirs from wherever he'd last gone to. He doesn't just get souvenirs for him though, he also gets some for his brothers

Limited edition keychains for Michael for example, sweets for Azrael, local ingredients for Cainabel, tea leaves for Raphael, a new book for Uriel, and etc.

For some reason people like giving him random stuff. Like he could just be passing by and one of his acquaintances or even someone who he'd never really hung out with but knew of him had just harvested their mango tree and now and a surplus of them, or ordered a bit too much of this or that and would give him their extras instead

That's why his pockets are perpetually full with little snacks, candies, and all a manner of random stuff

When his pockets get too full he pops up in the other virtues' offices to lighten his load so to speak

More often than not, it's Azrael who benefits from his brother's popularity since Gabriel himself doesn't eat too many sweets

He doesn't actually notice just how good-looking he is and couple that with his beautiful voice, you can see how and why he's so popular

His generally sunny and rambunctious personality has also earned him many fans

A fan of collecting stamps and has hundreds upon hundreds of books which contain every stamp that has ever come into existence

Michael once gave him a pen, one of those cheap ones you get at dollar stores with a cute character at the top. He still uses it until today and never leaves home without it

Regardless of how tacky something is, if it's from his brothers then Gabriel is sure to use it with happiness and pride

He’s already a normally friendly and handsy type of guy so it’s kinda hard to notice if he’s actually romantically interested in you

Heck, even Gabe doesn’t realize that he’s into you for a good while because he believes the way he thinks about and reacts to you was still included in the realm of being platonic friends

So what if his heart does those little flips whenever you laugh good-naturedly at his antics? When you gave him that little smile of yours that he liked to think was reserved solely for him?

It’s probably nothing when his skin heats up a little bit whenever his skin touches yours even for a little bit

What do you mean he’s always hanging around you? You were his best friend so of course he’d almost always be with you!

He’s kind of like a bird in the sense that his attention span is always moving from one thing or another, but the fact that you manage to hold his attention for so long even when you’re not there was something that surprised and baffled his brothers

Most notably Uriel who was used to Gabriel flitting about, kind of like a hummingbird if he was being honest

Also like a bird, Gabriel gets a lot of random trinkets. Both of his own accord and because people just like randomly giving him stuff and if he deems any of them worthy enough for you, he’s sure as heck gonna present it and gift it to you as soon as possible

He practically preens whenever you accept his gifts (it doesn’t help that his wings sometimes pop out in all his happiness and excitement). Even just a little compliment gets him so happy and excited for the rest of the day

Offers you his wing to touch if you show even the slightest interest in their angel wings

“ You wanna touch them? They’re 100% guaranteed SUPER SOFT. I always keep my wings nice and tidy since I gotta keep up appearances as a messenger, ‘ya know? ”

Gabe doesn’t realize/forgets that to offer someone to touch the symbols of his power, his wings of all things, showed that he held you in high regard

It confirmed your purity of soul, because to be judged by an archangel, a Virtue even meant that you were a special type of soul, a diamond in the rough so to speak

Although Gabe himself doesn’t notice it, his brothers definitely notice his sudden fixation on you. It’s almost worrying seeing him sitting still for once

While most people would think Gabe would be as chill as he normally he is when facing the truth of his feelings...he isn’t

Many forget that he and Uriel are twins, born of the same core split into two by the Heavenly Father. They shared much more characteristics than just their looks

Once he’s enamored by something, this angel shows his almost infallible dedication to it and only God sits above it

You’ll never have to worry about him coaxing you into something you won’t like or is bad for you. He merely aims to show you the true extent of his pure love

Dates with him are always at different locations or generally something new, because there’s so much that he wants to show and experience together with you

Karaoke dates are a fan favorite between you two, because who DOESN’T wanna hear the Voice of God himself sing?

Like his voice is already like pouring warm melted dark chocolate to your ears but his voice is enough to send you floating happily into the Celestial Realm

how i spent my 24th birthday!! in bullets

not only was it my birthday, but it was also kuya jp's (tiger's older brother) and basti's (tiger's nephew). kuya jp's at may 15 and basti's at may 12. so we all celebrated it together on may 16th!

we had SO MUCH FOOD. so much food that i invited cath over a day earlier than the planned visit because of the amount of food we had for the day.

cath gave me her gift na din. tan (her boyfriend) gave me a sober kids (his clothing brand) tote bag and cath gave me yogurt drinks and poptarts!!!

i requested for baked chicken with gravy and potato salad cause ate gi (tiger's sister) makes the best of the dish! yes, nagrequest ako HAHAHA

(the first gif) was my cake. banana dream from conti's. i was supposed to get a banoffee pie from banapple but settled for banana dream because yan yung natanggap sa grab HAHAHA no regrets! banana will forever be my favorite flavor of anything

it wasn't the only cake we had at home. we had a mango magnifico(?) cake from cara mia, basti's cake, and a black velvet cake from conti's, kuya jp's cake.

bianca (my cousin) sent me smores brownies. THEY WERE BAKED ON REQUEST. bianca had a phase in college ata or high school na sobrang hilig niya magbake. and she made me smores brownies and i've been in love ever since and every time she asks me what food i want it's always that HAHAHAHHA

before falling asleep, we watched harry potter & the sorcerer's stone. it was cath's first time! and i love that she loved it :(

balak ko talaga sa mismong birthday ko is to go to megamall to order panda express and yan na kakainin namin lahat sa bahay for the day. which i did!

kasama ko si tiger and si cath papunta sa megamall since pauwi din naman si cath sa marikina.

Mango Ramblings - Legacies S2E3

I’m still not sold on Mizzie, but MG might be exactly what Lizzie needs. Lizzie 2.0 needs someone to ground her–a lightning rod of sorts–to keep her steady and MG may be just that, even if it’s just as a friend.

Starting to think that He of the Majestic Cheekbones is a projection and the real Sebastian is sealed trapped somewhere on the school grounds. Maybe Sebastian needs a young, impressionable witch–a siphoner–to release him from his Shakespearean crypt? Regardless, Ric needs to come and collect his daughter and re-teach her the merits of stranger danger.

Speaking of, Ric needs to come and collect Josie. I know he’s all about his little pseudo-daddy/daughter time with Hope (and honestly, Hope needs it; she’s had a rough summer), but he really needs to step up with the twins, especially Josie. Either that or watch this posy-pattern wearing prick of a headmaster push her off of the proverbial cliff.

Prayer circle for my girl Caroline. All that travel must have addled this poor woman’s brain because I can’t think of a single good reason why she would have hired Vardouchemus the Eater of Carcasses. Did he promise her coupons to Pottery Barn? Better yet, what is he? Some ancient Incan creature that feeds on other mythical creatures? So…we’re just going to skip over how Hope turns Wolf!Raf into a real boy man again? “I need you,” she says earnestly. Pfft. Nice try JP. But you’re not baiting me that easily. Why cloak their reunion in all that mystery? As far as returns go, Raf’s was pretty lackluster. Are they going to drop the rest of that scene on us somewhere down the season as a flashback? Is their encounter going to play into Raf’s struggle to return to human life? Whatever it is, I need the writers to play it out properly. I’m talking character development up the wazoo. Even if it hurts, I want it to hurt good. This isn’t a banana, JP. I need you to peel this bitch back like a golden onion. Nice and steady.

Mooncusser Fish House Is ‘Old School’ and ‘Classical,’ According to One Critic

Plus, a look at the Old Havana in Jamaica Plain

“When Restaurants Were Restaurants”

The Boston Globe’s Devra First reviews Mooncusser Fish House this week. While the restaurant “sounds like it should be a shack by the beach,” it’s an entirely different operation, involving tablecloths, elegant food, and beautiful china, First writes. “It is a classic city restaurant, the sort of endeavor that feels so old-school it is not quite ready to be new again,” she writes. The smoked scallop terrine embodies the restaurant’s aesthetic — it has a “jouncy texture, the bottom half flecked with chives, the top embedded with chunks of scallop,” and it comes with house-made crackers that show off the care given to the food.

“Chef Carolyn Johnson’s menu takes us back to a time when restaurants were restaurants, not small-plates free-for-alls where ‘everyone shares family-style,’” First writes. Overall, there are plenty of pleasurable parts of the meal, including mackerel crudo, an elegant chowder, and a halibut that’s seared golden. Of the desserts, “the clear winner is pastry chef Katie Hamilburg’s baba au rhum,” which First describes as “a boozy little cake” in a pool of caramel. Overall, she rates the restaurant two-and-a-half stars out of four, between “good” and “excellent.”

“A Miracle Under the Radar”

Marc Hurwitz reviews the Old Havana in Jamaica Plain for the Dig. The menu includes beef patties, cod fritters, empanadas, steak sandwiches, seafood paella, a deep-fried whole red snapper, and lots more. Hurwitz’s personal highlights include a Spanish sausage that’s “slightly sweet, smoky, and spicy” and “a classic Cuban sandwich with ham, tender roasted pork, cheese, pickles, and mustard all stuffed into freshly made Cuban bread.” He also calls attention to “a wonderful version” of arroz con pollo, not to mention a churro plate for dessert. There’s no alcohol available at the Old Havana, but the restaurant offers mango smoothies and a mild mamey smoothie that brings “to mind everything from watermelon to sweet potatoes to even a bit of pumpkin.”

Overall, Hurwitz writes, the Cuban dishes offered reflect “exactly what simple comfort food should be all about, and the Old Havana seems to do it about as well as anyone in the region.”

This unusual travel story – ‘Unexplored India Series – Kotla Sultan Singh – A Voyage of Emotions’, meant for the Non-Resident Indians, was published in the January 2014 issue of ‘NRI Achievers’, an NRI-focussed publication. It is a poignant account of my short visit to the legendary singer Mohammad Rafi’s birthplace.

A Blast from the Past

Many days of uncertainties, planning, and re-planning later, I finally left for Amritsar on 30th November 2013. I was to meet my friend after a gap of 30 years. Little did I know then that this journey was going to be more memorable than any I had ever undertaken!

After the first-day customary visit to the iconic Golden Temple, devouring some finger-licking delicious ‘Beere Da Chicken’ and witnessing an electrifying flag-lowering ceremony at Attari-Wagah border, my friend suggested that we visit a village next morning. Being from Punjab, such an invitation is always a welcome excitement for me. Upon enquiring, he mentioned we’d be visiting Kotla Sultan Singh. This name sounded vaguely familiar.

Next morning, we drove off on Majitha Road – a road that forms a diagonal between the roads leading to Ajnala and Batala. Once on that road, for me, the penny dropped. I asked him if Kotla Sultan Singh is the village from where the famous singer, Late Mohammad Rafi, hailed. He responded in affirmative.

As an avid music lover, from then on, the next few hours were part-dream, part-nostalgia for me.

Goosebumps and more

I have visited Shakespeare’s world-famous ‘Globe Theatre’ in London. While that visit was memorable, the feeling was nowhere close to what I was experiencing during my drive to Kotla Sultan Singh.

From my childhood to now, I do not remember a single day when Rafi Sahib’s soulful singing didn’t stir a feeling or two in me. Whilst the foot-tapping Shammi Kapoor numbers invariably surfaced during the happy-go-lucky moods, his romantic numbers floated by in the sub-conscious during the softer moments; when feeling low, an apt sad song by Rafi Ji would invariably come to mind, and similarly, during a festival or a special occasion, some other classic by him would fill the senses.

We drove past Majitha town, and my excitement started to mount. I instinctively knew we were very close to his village. My eyes were taking in every sight, sound, and smell along the way. The poplar-lined narrow, well-tarred road (for the most part) was cutting through the green vistas of a prosperous region that thrived in growing peas, potatoes, mustard, and wheat, besides many other vegetables, food grains, and cash crops. The traffic was sparse and mixed, with tractors rubbing shoulders with cars, buses, and bicycles. The farmhands and farmers were busy on their farms. While the air was crisp and fresh, the entire scene, calm and tranquil.

Finding Rafi Ji’s Childhood Friend

A short dirt track through some houses finally led us out to a T-junction. To our right, we could see an entrance arch to a primary school which announced in Punjabi – Government Elementary School, Kotla Sultan Singh. We stopped there to make enquiries. We had heard that a schoolmate of Rafi Sahib still lived in the village. A gentleman, who was going about his business, very hospitably offered to help us find him and finally took us to Rafi Sahib’s schoolmate’s house.

Sardar Kundan Singh, 87, was sitting in the open courtyard of his village home when we entered. His family warmly welcomed us. Given his age, and slight disability (partial paralysis), his grandson offered to act as the interpreter.

Kundan Singh Ji referred to Rafi Sahib as Pheeko (I learned later that was Rafi Sahib’s nickname). He shared that Rafi Sahib’s family belonged to Naai (barber) community, but in the same breath mentioned that during any weddings in the village, Rafi Sahib’s family would be responsible for making the sweets. Seeing my confusion, he was quick to clarify that ‘Naai’ community traditionally was responsible for all these odd jobs like cutting hair, making sweets, etc.

He reminisced how Rafi sahib and a few other kids used to celebrate various festivals together. The normal mode of transportation those days was either horses or bicycles. Being young, they would often use these for visiting fairs in nearby villages. They were together till 4th standard, in the same Elementary School I mentioned earlier. Their main medium of education was Urdu, and their teacher was Mr. Nazeer Ahmed. The village had a population of just about 900 people. Their pastime was to go to the fields and help make jaggery, shepherd, or play eye-spies. And, while these games were on, Rafi Sahib would always be humming or singing.

He talked about how they were together till 1937 (the year Rafi Sahib’s family left for Lahore, as per his memory) and shared all that children of that age shared. Upon asking if he ever met Rafi Sahib again after he left for Lahore in 1937, he shared about his next and only meeting.

It was 1956, and Rafi Sahib had a stage show in Amritsar. From the stage, he asked for Kundan Singh Ji by name on the mike. That’s when these childhood friends again met and hugged each other. Whilst sharing this, I could detect mixed feelings in Kundan Singh Ji’s faraway look – a hint of nostalgia, a touch of pride and a surge of emotion that moistened his eyes. And I realised that even my eyes had moistened.

Kundan Singh’s Ji’s grandson then took us around – to a new house next door, where Rafi Sahib’s house used to be; to the Elementary School where Rafi Sahib had carved his name on the trunk of a mango tree, which had now been felled; and, to the new Higher Secondary School where Rafi Sahib’s statue had been erected. Silently, I went around, clicked some pictures, bade my goodbyes – my heart overflowing with emotion.

During our drive back, all I could think of was the music lover’s pilgrimage I had just undertaken. It was 1st of December, and I realized if Rafi Sahib were alive today, he would have been 89 in another 3 weeks or so. The one song by Rafi Sahib that refused to get out of my head at that moment was – “Tum mujhe yoon, bhula na paaoge…” (You will not be able to forget me easily…)

Music Director Naushad had given a fitting tribute to this music great after he passed away. In complete agreement, I am privileged to share the same with you here:

“Kehta hai koi, dil gaya, dilbar chala gaya; Saahil pukarta hai, samandar chala gaya; Lekin jo baat sach hai, wo kehta nahi koi; Duniya se mosiaki ka, payambar chala gaya…”

(“Says someone, ‘the heart is gone, the heartthrob is gone’; The shore screams out ‘the entire sea is gone’; But what the truth is, no one is saying; From the world, the prophet of music is gone…”)

Life in the Jungle (II)

Everything is wet here. Dampness seeps into our sheets and our blankets. A layer of mould clings to my guitar case, crumpled in a corner. Raindrops fall from the hole in our roof where a monkey has removed the tile. The rain ceases only for short spells before the sound of it meeting the jungle canopy sends us running for shelter once again. There is a darkness too. The sun rarely breaks through the cloud and the solar-powered batteries, the source of the school’s electricity, are quickly drained. Still the dancers dance, the singers sing and the soft beat of a tabla continues unabated.

On Sundays we leave the dripping jungle behind and wander into Kalkeri. Through the gate and down the bank, past the building site and the water tower. We know who will greet us. The young girl, always smiling, rocking on haunches; the old lady, her 'namaste' more of a bitter chastisement than a cheery hello. We’ll head for one of the eateries, perch on benches sipping chai and nibbling rice Krispies or if we’re lucky an omelette in a bun. Sometimes we go further, catching the bus into Dharwad, picking up coffee and fruit and another pair of sandals before heading back to the school completely exhausted. One time we venture all the way to Hubli, celebrating Soph’s birthday with a night at a hotel. We let the morning drift and settle, until I’m hurried back for another photo shoot.

There are always more photos to take. Everyone needs a picture, especially in India. I start with the college students, forty of them, freshly riled by their monthly meeting. “Stand there. 1, 2, 3. Next.” Then it’s the First Standard, still settling in but full of smiles, happy to pose. It’s the staff that take the most time. Admin staff, wardens, academic teachers, music teachers, the maintenance team, kitchen workers, volunteers, Santosh and his locks. The women dress in saris for the occasion which only adds to the pressure to get it right. Later I sit with Adam in front of his computer and wait for the verdict. Hands out of place. Sideways face. Too much space. Adam is a perfectionist. He’s also the School Director, and a fellow Englishman with an indified accent. He’s been at KSV for more than 10 years, starting as a volunteer but destined for permanent jungle residence. Now he's married to a local, father of a three-year old son and regular giver of talks about the school.

He uses our fortnightly meetings to brief me on upcoming visits, events, festivals. I scribble furiously: a performance for the Chief Minister; a visit from State Bank of India; another cohort of Deshpande students. They’ll all need photos; they’ll all need a Facebook post. The highlight is the school fair and for once I’m able to ditch camera duties. The students compete as their six houses, moving between challenges, earning tokens for each success. It verges on chaos at times. Tokens are stolen. Scores are questioned. Wardens become abusive. My activity involves groups of 30 transporting themselves on mats from one end of the yogshala to the other without touching the floor. There’s an imaginary river to cross, an overhang to crawl beneath. Two members are blindfolded. Before I know it they’re off, self-elected leaders yelling instructions, cheaters protesting innocence, older students launching younger ones across the raging water. We don’t tell them we’ve messed up the timekeeping.

We finish the day with a performance from the volunteers – a mime that centres on some chewing gum and then the body percussion that Lois taught us. Boom click clap, boom boom click clap. If it was intended to calm the students at the end of a hectic day, it failed dismally. By the end they’re baying for the final result, surging towards Amethyst as she nears the announcement. Disorder rules. It’s such a delicate balance, between engaging students and realising they’ve taken control.

We all have our struggles, with the kids, the staff, the climate. We meet every Tuesday morning and share our thoughts, give our farewells to departing volunteers, welcome new ones. Louis-Marie, too rigid for the Indian toilet. Vince and Audrey, their romance kept secret lest the kids found out. Sam and Noemie, similarly unmoved by leaving the children behind. Sometimes we mark a departure with a special event like the time we headed to Mango Moods for Pierre. We returned to the school packed in a jeep, bellowing Queen and Oasis with more than a hint of rum and beer filling the air. We tiptoed past the kitchen, ready to jam, one night closer to our own departures. By the time we pack our bags only Sahil and JP remain from the volunteers who welcomed us. Sahil, always pulling at his beard until he shaved it off and we all wondered who the newcomer was. He's one of the last I see, reminding me not to get caught up in the race, a few laps behind, the race that pushed us to India.
