why he agreed to this, he'll never know. don't you want to make friends? william had asked him. and he'd been tempted to say no, that he doesn't want to make friends, and that he's doing just fine, thank you very much. but william had been so excited for him, and so keen to help him out, that john hadn't had the heart to actually say no to him. you never know, had been william's follow-up statement, you might meet someone you like. which seems a bit bloody unlikely, but again, he hadn't wanted to hurt william's feelings.

so he's in a nightclub, which is the last place that he would want to be, but he'd been reliably informed that it's where you meet people these days. he would have preferred a library, or a museum, except apparently people don't talk to each other in places like that any more. though he doesn't know how he's expected to talk to people here either. the loud music is agitating, and he can barely hear himself think, let alone even begin to strike up a conversation.

the fresh air is bracing, and a welcome escape from the mass of people expecting him to engage in conversation and be polite. excuse me, my lord, we haven't seen you for so long, and are you not going to dance, my lord, are frequent topics of conversation that he would much rather avoid if he had the choice. but being a part of pleasant society means, unfortunately, having to cope with them.

still, at least he can escape outside, use the excuse that he wants to see the full moon. it's not as if people don't know that he's somewhat of a recluse and has been for years. it's not as if they don't know that he's only in london because of a family scandal in norfolk. the scandal hadn't been to do with him but it had been thought wise to send him somewhere else, to try and distance himself from it all.
