omg I loved the new chapter!! There is so much going on emotionally and sorry to hijack a lovely Jance/Kris & Jan friendship chapter with my silly little bokris agenda but my brain has chosen to latch on to a new mental image you might enjoy!! Of Kris as a bat just proudly riding around on Bojans shoulder nestled into his neck, or tucked into his shirt pocket right over his heartbeat, or hanging off his belt by his hips cuz ofc they're comfortable with him being so close to the intimate areas that basically belong to Kris anyway (although I'll admit I'm also excited to read about Jan taking some ownership over those places too) I lovedddd the possessive way Bojan wrapped his tail around krises leg in chapter 2 and I love the thought of them just always touching/being with eachother with that sense of ownership and togetherness even when Kris is a cute little bat . And omg they could go on moonlit flights together too 😭

First group I listened to/liked? I was first exposed to kpop by Wonder Girls’ Tell Me, which was huge in China, but the first group that got me hooked on kpop was 2NE1. I was stuck the moment I watched Fire.

What ship/pairing are you most excited to explore in the monster AU? I know Jance is the more plot heavy "will they/won't they" while bokris is more established and you've already given us such delicious bokris smut omg, and you also mentioned partner swapping and poly!jo so I'm curious which of those you're most excited to write! Can't wait for the next chapter I'm hooked!!

ooooh good question! I have two big scenes with Jure and Nace I really like and am looking forward to writing. i have a really fun way to explore Jure getting love considering he can't really touch people unless he focuses and tries quite hard. Difficult to kiss people as a ghost. I'm actually really enjoying writing everyone's friendships too. like Jan and Kris have a really good friendship scene next chapter that made me really happy to write. even just little scenes like Jan, Nace and Jure having the pillow fight in the background of chapter 2 was fun cause it makes them seem like friends first. there's a few pairs I don't really explore in my outline I'm kinda hoping will present themselves as wanting to be written. like I didn't intend for most of chapter two to be the BoKris smut but they really insisted on it so I'm looking forward to seeing who the characters themselves choose to interact with. thank you for asking!

Little bit of Monster Hearts world building! i wrote this is reply to a comment on the fic and figured I'd post it here too!

Ghost food: Ghost food is a bitch because yeah I'm thinking you have to "kill" the food, as ghost food is like a memory of that food.

Ghost coffee can be made a few ways but the most common are to burn the shit out of it until there's no liquid left (but most ghosts don't love that taste of burnt coffee) or you make it regularly and then smash the cup on the ground. Most coffee places don't offer it because it's a pain to clean up.

You can buy instant ghost coffee where you just add a lot of steam (aka ghost water) and that's what Jure often ends up drinking and making at home. It's very expensive though.

(I'll be honest this is not an entirely original thought as I read a pretty good book called Everlost that had this basic thing as a concept for ghost food. They did not have ghost coffee though so those specifics are mine. And technically they weren't really ghosts i don't think.

My version of ghosts are very different to their version regardless but I did really like the idea. Good book from what I remember of it)

I have two questions for you

1. How did this fic start? Like, what made this idea spark in your head and say "yes, I wanna write this"?

2. Maybe it's me who didn't get it, but in your fic world are humans aware of the existence of these creatures? I know they are a band, do they perform in front of human audiences, monster audiences, a mixture of them because monsters hide among humans?

1) i always love monster AUs. Alternate worlds were my fave part of any fandom and imagining monsters was extra fun. My fave books as a kid were about monsters and creatures living kinda ordinary lives. A good book series as a kid was Phredde the Fairy which had such a well thought out world that incorporated magic so easily with the real world.

I also love the idea of how what monster you pick to represent yourself can show your personality. For me i would be a Frankenstein monster cause I feel I'm made of lots of different pieces all sewn together and trying to be human.

You can play around with characters so easily, have the wolf transformation of a werewolf represent feeling out of control or having to lock away and hide a part of yourself.

A ghost can represent wanting to be seen and heard but always being ignored and fading into the background.

You can make it as deep as you want or you can just want to play with some fun powers and interesting scenarios.

For me I really wanted to just have an AU I could play with. I could make a whole world for, with lots of backstory and detail and I could make it complex or it could be read as just light-hearted fun.

I'm probably autistic so having character traits be manifested as physical things (bojan's whore tendancies= he is a sex demon) make it easier for me to write them and understand them. Jan's tail can express his emotions even if he doesn't as much irl.

(Also artwork in this universe is much easier and fun to do cause they all have distinct look lol)

(Sorry that got long. TL:DR I just wanted to play with a world I made)

2) I haven't addressed it really but monsters and humans exist alongside one another in relative harmony. Well as harmonious as humans get. Joker Out is slightly unusual in that every member is a monster but yeah there's humans who like them. Humans are boring to write about though so I don't bring them up.

Several monsters start off human. Kris was a human until he was 19 and was then turned (Martin was also turned) and Nace is made from pieces of human but made a monster by combining them together.

I considered making some background and crew characters human but that's much less fun to play with than monsters so I just never brought up who was what.

Basically think of any monster race as like a different human race or disability or anything really. Everyone knows they exist, some places have higher concentrations of certain types, some places are more prejudice, some are more accommodating.

They're as normal and diverse as people having different hair colours.

I'll often have scenes in my head of what I want to happen but as I write the characters become more real in a way. Then by the time I get to a scene they'll have developed in a way that means I have to change how the scene goes.

Part of why I like world building so much is it means I know how they all act so in a way it does feel like I'm just telling you their story rather than making it up myself.

Hell Jan and Nace's heart to heart in chapter 4 was basically meant to happen at the end but if felt more natural and logical for them to talk about it then.

Hello! I loved the BoMartin fic! I had a question if you don't mind? It's a pretty small one haha so maybe people won't find it too interesting. It was the first time (at least I think it was, maybe I'm forgetting earlier chapters) that you used the term 'mate' and I was wondering how exactly that word is used in your AU, and curious about it in the context of Bojan and Martin discussing their relationship!

Is it used like bf/gf? Did Martin consider Bojan his mate? Or is it a bigger commitment like marriage? (Bojan essentially asking whether he was marriage material lol) or is it even stronger like in some fantasy where it's a fated, soulmate bond?

And is it vampire specific?

that's a good question, thakn you! (i like answering simple ones anyway. i always make them complicated and they give me a great jumping off point for world building.) Also yeah that is the first time I've used the word mate.

(okay this got very long sorry. i really liked thinking about this and how it would work in the world so it got kinda in depth. also I only think of all this in depth when stuff is asked about so I've had several almost throwaway lines become proper parts of the world because people were interested in them.)

the mate Martin means is in a vampire specific context and is basically marrage/ lifelong bond kinda deal. Originally it meant a partnership between a vampire and a nonvampire as a way to protect them ("you can't drink from her/hurt her that's Gabriel's mate so she's protected"). It also was an implication (especially if the non vampire was human) that the vampire would primarily feed from their mate. traditionally that's how a lot of mating starts, by drinking from them first and the forming that strong bond.

In more modern times/ in Martin and Kris's clan the term can be used for vampire x vampire relationships too but is still basically a lifelong commitment, and an agreement that no one else can touch the other person without also dealing with their mate.

Bojan was basically joking about being marrage material and how if martin had started feeding from him then it would be like starting a courtship/ starting down the path to becoming a mate maybe.

Different clans will debate over soulmates, the more romantic ones like to believe in it but for Martin and Kris's clan it's just a very intense marriage. Like different faiths. Werewolves also use the terms mate but it's a bit more relaxed. more like a regular marriage kinda deal. For werewolves it can be used instead of patner/husband/wife in a more relaxed sense.

think of it like the word partner. Where I'm from most people out of high school used partner to mean the person they're dating cause boyfriend/girlfriend sounds kinda immature. But in America partner is less common (from what I know) and is still mostly used by queer couples if they don't want to say boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife.

it's the same word but it has slightly different usages/meanings/ implications in the different monster cultures.

(i think i've said this before but I find it much more interesting to have there be different cultures within the monster species. not all vampires and werewolves and other monsters think and act the same just like how withing every culture there's little sub groups.)

I'm a people pleaser at heart and I do adore writing these stories so it's hard to say no sometimes when I do genuinely love the idea. I also hope the main story has enough plot to keep people interested as i know some people just want to enjoy a short little story.
