Oh no, what happened to Trickster? I'm not up on DC Comics.
Ooooh, boy, where do I start?
Original Trickster James Jesse has been largely missing since New 52/Rebirth/whatever latest continuity reboot. He was dead for quite awhile before that (having been killed protecting Pied Piper in the largely shitty Countdown event), and seemed to be non-existent in the new continuity, with Axel as the main Trickster. And Axel is a cute lil' guy, but James is my Trickster of choice.
He finally came back in Josh Williamson's run, in a story arc called "The Greatest Trick of All," which revealed that James had been locked up in Iron Heights for years, tormented by Warden Wolfe, who was basically using him to test their security measures. Then he escaped and has been building a little criminal empire, and somehow using the Sage Force to brainwash people. When he makes his big move, he brainwashes most of Central City into mindless happiness, while his select group of Rogues loot the city. Oh, and he was also dating a police officer while using his actual (stage) name James Jesse (which makes no fucking sense, even with Trickster long out of the public eye that name should have run some bells), and it is implied that she was also brainwashed, which means some serious consent issues if they ever slept together.
Williamson's version of James was generally MUCH nastier than he has been in the past. It can be partially justified by him spending so much time in Iron Heights alone and forgotten, but it's still taking the character to a shitty place. JJ was always an asshole, and his "reform" in the 90's mostly happened because he was afraid of going to Hell and meeting a certain demon with a grudge against him. But he still tended to be one of the less violent Rogues who never killed anyone to my knowledge. (If you only know JJ from the Flash TV show, ignore that, Mark Hamill is great but the show got JJ really wrong). Williamson pushed James into a dark and cruel territory, and had him doing things like shoving his abusive parents off a building (Flash saved them).
Williamson also added this new trait of James seducing women and using them as part of his plans. He did it with the police officer, he also recounts dating a lab tech from Star Labs to steal information to make his anti-grav shoes, and THAT is a retcon that DEEPLY pissed me off. James MADE the original shoes, both compressed air and anti-grav lift versions on his own, because he is very, very smart, despite acting like a silly little guy. AXEL is the Trickster who got his start by stealing someone else's tech, and while Axel has modified the Trickster gear and made some of his own stuff since then, James is the one who invented it all on his own, and Williamson basically took that away from him.
Going after women was also never one of James' character traits. He is an all-purpose con-man that fools everyone, but he never targeted women specifically prior to Williamson. In fact, 90's James arguably drank his Respect Women juice. He helped Catwoman with a job, developed a crush on her which he expressed by blurting out this long speech about how he thinks she's amazing, figured out her secret identity and kept quiet about it, and donated a bunch of money to a charity that he thinks she would approve of. All without necessarily expecting her to fall into bed with him, or getting angry when she doesn't. 90's James also flew across the world when he heard that his former girlfriend Mindy Hong was in trouble, and helped rescue her son (who also turns out to be JJ's son). James was not someone who went out of his way to mistreat women.
Williamson also wrote the Black Label Rogues mini-series, a depressing noncanon future story where Captain Cold gathers people for "one more job" and gets most of them killed. Future James in that one is performing a stage show, seducing rich old ladies to sponge off their money, and is portrayed as basically the worst out of the group - such a shitty dude that Golden Glider kills him and no one cares.
It's funny, in an interview Williamson said of James, "I love him," but that statement was immediately followed by "He's just a crazy asshole." Williamson obviously does NOT love James, or else hasn't read anything with him prior to Countdown, and his portrayal of the character seems closer to the serial killer Mark Hamill version. He strips away any kind of heart or likability from the character and makes him "just a crazy asshole," like a less interesting Joker. He made James significantly worse than he had been even in his pre-reform days, and the "darker edgier" Trickster isn't even particularly interesting. So yeah, I want Josh Williamson to never write most of the Rogues again, but especially keep his hands off James Jesse.
The James Jesse Trickster is definitely one of those characters where I'm like, "I love this dude, but only in these specific runs, and then he hasn't been written well in 20 years."

Zion Williamson's Masterclass in Managing Media Narrative.
It was fascinating to watch the Zion Williamson saga unfold. I paid attention and witnessed how a well oiled PR machine can change narrative.
It all started innocuous enough. Zion’s soon to be baby mama posted a video of the gender reveal party. This set off a shit storm that had to be managed and needed the best at doing that.
As soon as Zion’s side piece Moriah Mills, a former porn star and current OnlyFan’s model, saw the gender reveal video she lost her shit. She started putting him on blast on social media and she had the receipts. She posted video’s, texts, and bank transfers. The evidence she posted proved beyond a doubt that she wasn’t lying about the relationship.
This created a huge problem, not just for the NBA but for many corporations who were attached to Zion. Zion is one of the biggest rising superstars in the NBA and he is as good as advertised. It is a shame he has been injured for the majority of the time he has been a professional. But when he is playing, he is as dominant a player as they come. He is big, strong, incredibly athletic and he is also only 22 years old. So, the NBA and his sponsors have an interest in managing his image. Unlike Ja Morant (who’s immaturity is on another level), Zion wasn’t out and about in the clubs drinking, acting a fool and brandishing guns. The most negative thing to come out about Zion was JJ Reddick calling him an aloof teammate.
Which ever PR team that went in to damage control did it quick. And it was beautiful to observe.
From what I have observed, the initial plan was to just let her blow off steam, deal with it privately and then forget about it. But, Moirah Mills will not let that happen. She continued her attacks on him. To make it worse, she even posted private messages from him asking her to stop and he will take care of her. Once it became clear that she will not stop, the PR team went in to plan B.
The challenge for the team was that they have to overcome the publics thirst for sellacious news, specially of the sexual kind, regarding public figures. So the PR team started leaking news that The New Orleans Pelicans (the basketball team he was playing for) were looking to trade him to another team. They had leaks about his less than stellar relationship with the management, coaching staff, and team mates.
It was also important that the PR team didn’t leak everything all at once. They systematically fed story lines to the media that will keep his personal life drama out of it. I suspect they were expecting Moriah Mills to calm down after a few tweets, the whole thing would blow over, and the public would forget about it. Instead of calming down, it had the opposite effect. Day by day she kept ramping up so the PR team had little choice but to keep it up until she went away.
Many were expecting Zion to involve lawyers and send her a Seize and Desist letter. But he never did. He was trying to deal with her in private.
Her tweets escalated as her fury increased. Day by day she leaked more DM’s, more private affairs, more threats. This was harassment plain and simple yet, hardly a soul mentioned it. The deafening silence of Malika Andrews has to be noted as she had nothing to say about Moriah Mills (31) harassing a much younger man Zion (22). If this was a woman being harassed the way Zion was, regardless of the age, you know Malika Andrews would have a lot of shit to say.
We have to give a lot of credit to Zion being incredibly mature in how he handled the whole situation. Had you not known that Moriah Mills was 9 years his senior, you would have guessed that Zion was the one elder to her. Yet, he kept his cool and let the PR team handle it. But I have no doubt he was the one who approved the strategy (amongst the many that, I am sure, was proposed) that was employed to manage the situation. After all, it is his name that was being dragged through the mud.
The final straw came when Moriah Mills, in her desperate attempts at getting a response after a week of nonstop tweets, tweeted that she has sex tapes of the 2 and that she is going to release it to the public. Not only did she threaten to release the sex tapes, she also demanded that the Pelicans trade Zion out of New Orleans.
Unbeknownst to her, this was a grave mistake because it violated Twitter’s Terms of Service and it led to her account being permanently banned from Twitter with 1.2 million followers. She was shut down and Zion’s and his team didn’t have to do a thing.
The ban from twitter seems to have gotten the message through to her that should she continue harassing Zion, it is likely that she will end up getting banned from other popular platforms such as Instagram, Youtube, TikTok and Facebook as well. For an OnlyFans adult performer, not having access to these platforms will mean that she will lose income through her inability to promote her content.
I also suspect that besides getting banned from Twitter, there must have been a private visit from a lawyer (either representing Zion, The NBA or The Pelicans) to put it in no uncertain terms what she was dealing with. She must have been told of the kind of people that had an interest in Zion’s success, the kind of power and money they have access to, and the legal measures they can take to not only silence her but also ruin her financially.
The message seems to have gotten through as she is very strategic and backhanded in how she has been talking about Zion since then. Almost exclusively posting thirst traps and trying to star relevant.
No sooner the ban went in to effect, the rumours about Zion’s trade out of the Pelicans vanished, his relationship with the organisation seems to have been wiped clean, and his commitment to basketball reinforced and unquestioned.
Now, the talk is all about his basketball career and how he is going to return stronger and hungrier from his injury. There is hardly any mentions of or about his affairs with multiple pornstars.
And that, ladies and gentleman, is a masterclass in how you handle, manage, manipulate, react and pivot a narrative. This was absolutely astonishing to witness.
We need to thank Zion for the way he has handled this situation. Let it be a lesson to all the up and coming superstars of any sport that they need not do the first thing that comes to mind, to not give in to base instincts, and to not lash out when a negative story hits the headlines. It is important for them to calm down, think with a cool head, put the right people in place to handle the situation and keep it professional.
Zion did all of that beautifully. The NBA and other major sports leagues need to understand that these are still very young men in their late teens and early 20's. They are starting a career in the public eye and being paid millions of dollars to do it. Unless they guide these young men in how they manage their health (physical and mental), their lifestyle, and their finances, we are bound to have more stories like this come out.
in the meantime, a huge congratulations to Zion Williamson and his PR team. Y’all handled that beautifully.

Literally trans men get hatecrimed and murdered as well. Trans men get assaulted and abused and terrorized for being trans. Trans men are victimized by larger systems as well.
Brandon Teena. Robert Eads. Camdyn Rider. Mar'Quis "MJ" Jackson. E.J. Boykin. Poe Black. Jeffrey "JJ" Bright. Oliver "Ollie" Taylor. Jacob Williamson.
So many names. I can go on. Trans men are not somehow exempt from transphobia, trans men experience sexism and misogyny and violence. Stop pretending that we don't.

11. What’s the worst art you’ve seen?
You would think it would be Greg Land porn face, but nah, it's this:
From an Inhumans story about a corrupt Genetics Council member coming after Ahura, after Black Bolt and Medusa left him to be raised by a human couple. I can deal with comics having a very stylized or cartoony art style, but this is just.....bad. Really, really bad.
But I gotta love Maximus popping up out of his cell as soon as he hears the word "mad," like Tony Wonder waiting to make an entrance. "Did someone say 'Wonder'?"
Special runner up - any random Greg Land, really:
Why does this teenage girl being beaten look like she's screaming in ecstasy? Fucking Land.
Why is this apparently grown adult woman who seems to be a scientist (judging by the lab coat) making this expression? Fucking Land, who cannot draw a realistic expression on a woman to save his life, and obviously traced this from a model emoting "shocked" or "offended." Seriously, she doesn't even look like she's supposed to be a sexy super-heroine, but Land just had to give her That Face.
19. Rant about a change they made to a character of your choice.
You'd think I would talk about Pyro here, but I have to take a moment to rant about my DC boy, James Jesse, the original Trickster (a Flash Rogue). James was always kind of a wacky villain - an inventor and conman who commits crimes in the silliest way possible, but wasn't a full on edgy murderer like the Joker. He was definitely an asshole for sure, but probably one of the less murderous Rogues, and even took a stab at reforming for awhile (although he wasn't super-sincere about it). James then got replaced by a new Trickster named Axel, and then turned into a homophobe because someone wanted to do a Defiant Ones story with James on the run with and handcuffed to gay Rogue Hartley Rathaway/Pied Piper (even though Hartley and James were previously portrayed as friends with no issues), and then killed off.
Then after DC rebooted continuity a couple of times, James was still MIA, and Axel was treated as the only Trickster, even though most of the other original Rogues were back. Then Josh Williamson finally brought James back for a story arc that revealed that he'd been stuck in prison and basically tortured for years, and then escaped and went underground and was coming back for revenge. Williamson wrote a darker James, who still isn't technically a murderer, but did shove his parents off a building (Flash saved them). I'll admit the darkness made some sense, JJ was stuck in prison and it warped him, but the story seems to have virtually no sympathy for this wacky bankrobber getting tortured for years. Flash himself, who was very concerned about baby Trickster Axel getting mistreated in prison, doesn't appear to give a shit that James endured this for YEARS. Williamson also retconned James' past to say that he stole some of the ideas to make his anti-gravity shoes by seducing a lab tech, and this pisses me off SO MUCH. James' original origin story has him reading science magazines and figuring out how to make his gadgets on his own, which is one of the things that distinguishes him from Axel (who stole James' gear). It's not realistic, but nothing about the Flash Rogues are realistic. JJ is, in his own words, a Soo-per Genyius, and I hate any writer trying to take even part of that away from him.
Williamson also added this whole characterization of James routinely seducing and using women as part of his scams, even though that was NEVER part of his character before. He was a conman for sure, but he didn't specifically target women to steal money or tech, that was a new thing. Williamson wrote a darker Rogues AU future story that basically involves a group of them going out for "one last score" (with violent, gory results), and writes James in that story as one of the worst, just an absolute uncaring asshole with no apparent empathy or morals. This is the same character who, back in the 90's, ran across the world to help his ex-girlfriend, and then bartered with a demon to save the souls of his fellow Rogues. Anyway, fuck you very much, Williamson, never write James Jesse again, just keep your hands off him.
39. Which character do you get the most defensive of?
Once again, I'm gonna have to say James Jesse, the original Trickster, because comics have been so shitty for him for like 20 years. But also because the Flash TV show has popularized a version of James who actually is a remorseless murderer, and that's the version that keeps showing up in fandom. Most of the Rogues got an interesting reinvention on the show (for better or for worse), but James wound up being based entirely on a version of the character from the long-forgotten Flash 90's live-action show, who was basically Flash's equivalent of the Joker and played by Mark Hamill. And I have great respect for Mark Hamill, he's fantastic and he plays the TV version of the character well, but he's very different from comics James, and is much more murderous and unstable. And because the Flash CW show got Mark Hamill back, instead of a comics accurate Trickster, we got old man murderer Trickster (even though he's also one of the younger original Rogues). So I'm stuck wading through Flash fanfic, even fic that claims to be drawing from the comics, with the unstable killer version of Trickster, because that's the popular TV version.
(I will say, Mark Hamill also voiced a version of the Trickster on Justice League: Unlimited who seems like a more child-friendly version of TV Trickster, but I love him because he's not a killer and actually seems kind of sweet.)
I think when it comes to James Jesse, I'm a bit like you with Sebastian, I'm pointing at comics from decades ago, going, "No, no, he's not like that! He's like THIS! It's not his fault writers have been mangling his character for years!"
Your blog has actually made me much more defensive of Shaw as well, not as a "good guy," but as a "at least let him be a competent villain," argument.
43. What character do you resent the most?
Ohhhhh boy, there's a lot to say here.
My first answer would be some of the attention-grabbing characters that writers fawn over and who tend be heavily featured in damn near every X-Book. Right now it's Wolverine and Emma. Wolverine I don't really like much at any time, Emma I usually do like, but Duggan has been so far up her ass lately, I can't appreciate her in books anymore. I admit, I absolutely loved her beating down Sinister in Immoral X-Men, because finally, an Emma moment where I'm completely on her side, and where she's beating down someone I hate more. Also Gillen seems to have a more balanced take on Emma and isn't trying to rewrite her whole history.
But also, one of my fandom bad habits is that I get very resentful of any character who I think is replacing my favorite, or "stealing" a storyline that I wanted for my fave. So also, Simon Lasker (Pyro II) and to some extent Axel Walker (Trickster II).
Neither of them are bad characters. But Simon was basically a bland imitation Pyro who, from my perspective, stole the "gay Pyro" storyline out from under St. John, who was originally queer-coded and died of the AIDS metaphor virus, and has been in the comics closet for decades. And now that we are finally in a time when more comics characters can come out, and St. John is alive again, he's getting written as fantasizing about Jean Grey, presumably because "we already have a gay Pyro." Fuck that, St. John was here first. As far as I can tell, Simon was created to fulfill the Allerdrake ship from the movies, except he's not even the right Pyro for that, it's ALLERdrake, not LaskerDrake. I'd be more forgiving if Simon had a more interesting personality or if he looked significantly different from St. John, but instead he's like the equivalent of We Have Pyro at Home.
Axel Walker actually does have his own distinct personality and look as Trickster II, and I like him for that, but ever since his introduction, James has been killed off, and then dropped out of continuity, and then brought back darker and edgier so that Axel can be the sweet baby Trickster (even though back when Axel was first introduced, HE was the edgier Trickster, and James was trying to reform). It especially bothers me that all the other original versions of the Rogues got to come back in DC's rebooted continuity, but Axel was still treated as THE Trickster while James was largely forgotten. And lately artists and writers have been completely blurring the lines between the two characters, both in design and personality. Sometimes you literally cannot tell which Trickster is appearing in a book, because it's a character that looks and acts exactly like James, but is somehow named Axel.
Honestly, I try not to completely hate either character for this, it's not their fault. Axel especially is a good character when the writers actually let him be distinct from JJ. I could appreciate stories where the two Tricksters work together and annoy the shit out of each other, where James is all old school Looney Tunes and Three Stooges, and Axel is all Tik Tok and memes. That would be great. I'd enjoy a story with St. John mentoring Simon as a younger Pyro, and Simon maybe choosing a different name because Mesmero forced the Pyro identity on him, and both of them bonding over banging Iceman. I don't want to be mean to fans of these characters. But it's hard to like them while their presence in comics seems to negatively affect my faves.
Also, as long as I'm full of salt here - I have a limited patience for a lot of mascot and "joke" characters, especially when those characters become popular, but don't seem to have any real substance to them. Baby Yoda? Cute, but whatever, it's a baby. Soft Serve? I get it, she poops ice cream. She's a funny background joke, but I don't ever want to see a Soft Serve mini-series. I love Lockjaw and he is a Very Good Boy, but I would have rather seen any other member of the Inhuman Royal family get a mini-series. Doop? I don't give a single fuck about Doop, he's just a flying green blob whose joke wore thin ages ago.
44. Any characters you used to like but grew to dislike?
Deadpool. I read his series back in the 90's and genuinely liked him, but he got so big and over-played that I've completely burned out on the character now.
Also, Deadpool is a good example of how fandom (especially Tumblr fandom) can be very selective of which characters they deem "problematic." People are having yelling arguments across the Internet about Tony Stark or Hank Pym, or Cyclops, but somehow you can post about Deadpool without someone going, "Um, friendly reminder that originally Blind Al was actually Deadpool's prisoner, and when Weasel got too close to her, he threw both of them in a literal torture chamber!" Not that I want Deadpool to get dragged down by all the discourse, people should be able to freely enjoy him. But like, the dude kills people. He very gleefully kills people, and somehow doesn't get the kind of fandom controversy I've seen for other characters (at least in my corner of fandom, maybe it's going on elsewhere that I haven't seen.)
50. What’s something that bled into comics from a tv show or movie that you hate?
Hmmmmmm..........I think I'll say the Maximoff twins being declared Not Mutants and no longer Magneto's bio kids because the MCU wanted them in the movies. We all know that was about movie rights shenanigans, and not for any legitimate story reasons. It's just nonsense, and I'm patiently waiting for the retcon.

To add - Williamson has added this weird characteristic in his James of frequently using or seducing women that was, as far as I know, NEVER part of JJ's bag of tricks before. He was an all-purpose con-man who would trick anyone, regardless of gender, but he wasn't exactly Mr. Cassanova. Meanwhile, Williamson has James dating Kristen and forcing her (under the influence of the machine) to kiss him, and even adds a retcon that James dated a female scientist at Star Labs to steal information to build his air-walking shoes....which REALLY pissed me off. James's original story has him build his air-walking shoes out of spare parts at a damn circus, self-educated by reading science magazines, and no, it doesn't make sense, but neither does anything about any villain origin. James is legitimately brilliant and invented his own gadgets, it's one thing that sets him apart from Axel, who is also handy with gadgets, but originally stole all of James's tech. Williamson also had future James, in the Black Label Rogues mini-series, basically using older women for their money (and wrote him as an absolute nasty piece of shit).
This is definitely a new thing, as far as I know, targeting women specifically has never been part of James's MO. In fact, James is the guy who flew halfway across the world when his former girlfriend Mindy Hong needed help for her son (who also turned out to be James's son, unbeknownst to him). When James showed up in Catwoman for a story, he was an obnoxious little shit (he always is), but also confessed a crush on her in a way that involved him just gushing about how amazing he thinks she is. He figures out her secret identity and tells no one, and when he gets ahold of a large sum of money (long story), he donates it to a charity he thinks Selina would approve of. That's how JJ acts when he likes a woman, prior to Williamson getting his grubby mitts on the character. Of course, this was during James's reformed period, so you could argue he was still under the influence of Roscoe's brainwashing, but as gorogues said above, both pre-brainwashing and post-unbrainwashing James were never as nasty as Williamson has been writing him.
Basically, Williamson might have done an okay job with other characters, but I want him to never, ever write James Jesse again, he completely ripped any heart out of the character.
I’m confused by this Trickster
So in Flash #68 & 69 of 2016
Trickster (James Jesse) has created a machine that makes people really happy. I didn’t read the comic series fully cause this kinda scared the crap out of me. The fact that someone could make a machine that could make you so joyful that you comply to there wants and needs. It’s a frightening situation.
What has made me confused is this.
This kiss… technically wouldn’t this be… sexual assault or assault (Not really sure how far they went or where a kiss would actually fall under 😅). Cause she’s technically not a willing participant. She’s been made to comply by the machine making her extremely happy.
This shows that she obviously wasn’t a willing participant. The artist makes her look horrified by the entire situation.
Even if it was just a kiss… it still feels wrong. Which is why I’m completely confused. From the research I’ve done on the Trickster. He didn’t seem to be the type to do that. Though… with the way he’s written. Has Trickster ever needed to do that?
