Sunset Shimmer was the former student to Princess Celestia, a fey Goddess who previously ruled over the kingdom of Canterlot. In a last-ditch attempt at usurping the Princess and taking control over the Canterlot Monarchy, Sunset Shimmer attempted to steal the Crown of Canterlot - an ancient tiara, with a magical crystal embedded within it. Despite her expansive research, Sunset's hubris and inflated ego were no match for the powerful curse that had been placed on the crown, by the legendary wizard and mentor to Celestia, Starswirl the Bearded - so that only the worthy may wield it. The curse reflects ones true, inner self; and in Sunset's case, the crown sought to turn her into a demonic fiend, two snarling horns now splitting through her skin. The pain of the transformation forced Sunset to writhe in agony, throwing the crown from her head and by some sick sense of irony, halted the transformations completion - but not before leaving Sunset with a permanent reminder: that her soul is black, and she will never be worthy of the destiny she believes she deserves.
