Dörte Nerdy Questionnaire with Lail Arad & JF Robitaille
Soon Lail Arad and JF Robitaille will play one of their beautiful concerts in Berlin. Some of their own songs and some of their song which they wrote together since they met on a tour through Italy. Ahead of their gig in Berlin next week, they took the time to answer my Dörty (that’s me!) Nerdy Questionnaire so we get to know them a little bit better and what has changed since they started to work together and you’ll learn Mike Lindsey of Tunng has to do with their music.
The Dörty Nerdy Questionnaire is an e-mail interview, partly about their music, partly about stuff like their instruments, songwriting, the recording process and so on. That’s the nerdy part where I talked to other musicians about what they would like to know from other musicians and compiled a set of questions out of this conversations. Enjoy!
Step 1: Dörty is asking
Is the right chemistry between two songwriters the most important thing or could you write with someone where it doesn't click right away?
JF: I've never been interested in writing with anyone else, so it must be chemistry!
LA: It was a very new experience, after so many years of writing solo, to try and write together. I'd say respect for each other's previous work was probably the key – it meant we trusted each other's ideas and feedback, and it pushed our writing further as a result.
When you went into the studio as a two piece after recording solo for quite some time have you changed anything in the way you record your music?
JF: We're both used to doing all the singing and guitar playing ourselves so it's nice to share that challenge with someone. I've never worked with anyone as quick and precise as Lail so that's been a nice revelation.
LA: Every person in a studio environment changes the dynamics and the music that comes out. But ironically, even though we had double the opinions, I think having JF there made me work faster – I felt less alone in the song and questioned my decisions less.
Will there be more than a single? And when? And will it also be recorded by Mike Lindsay (side note: I love Tunng.)?
JF: Lail and I are definitely planning on continuing to write and record together and we're hoping to work with Mike as much as possible! ( side note: We love Tunng too!)
LA: Mike was so fun to work with. He played a vital part in how alive the session was, keeping the music moving and throwing ideas around in a very natural way. More soon I hope!
Lail, I've read you like to read on tour: Paper or kindle?
LA: JF is actually a much bigger reader than me. I read a lot. He reads A LOT. I'm still stuck on paper, and he moved to e-books (otherwise the suitcase would be too heavy!). Though I'm actually thinking of moving to audio-books for this tour, then you can look out of the train window at the same time...
How important are witty lyrics to you? Is life too serious anyway?
JF: I take witty lyrics pretty seriously.
LA: I don't take serious lyrics too seriously.
Step 2: More nerdy stuff.
How important is equipment to you and why?
JF: Equipment is not important, if you have good song you should be able to get it across on a 2 dollar guitar plugged into a loaf of bread.
LA: We're not really the right people to talk to about gear...
A question about the instrument you currently play the most: Why did you buy this?
JF: I play a 1972 Guild acoustic because I like how it looks and I love how it sounds. I don't know who the previous owners may have been but I know that Tim Buckley played the same model so I like to imagine I'm playing his guitar. Lail also plays a Guild.
LA: I play a little M20 Guild, like Nick Drake played, maybe because Nick Drake played it, or maybe because it's lighter to carry...
It was funny when we met to realise we both play guitars from the same family.
What was the first song you really could play?
JF: The first song I learnt on the guitar was House of the Rising Sun, the Animals version. The first song I really loved playing (and still play today) was Girl from the North Country by Bob Dylan.
LA: I spent a lot of time at the piano with songbooks as a teenager. Maybe Carole King's 'Way Over Yonder' was one of the first songs I felt I owned.
What makes a song good? When do you know you’re finished with a song?
JF: Good question, If I knew what makes a song good I would only write good songs. I guess a song is finished once I've recorded it in the studio, I'll usually keep working on it until somebody makes me stop.
LA: If a song is utterly universal and incredibly specific at the same time, you're probably onto a good thing. You should probably accept it's finished when you hear it on the radio...
Where does quality songwriting come from? Sudden inspiration or is it a process? Is it science or art?
JF: I think, for me, it's often sudden inspiration followed by some serious time spent living with the song in my head. Playing it over and over again, editing and experimenting. Other times it comes to me fully formed and I just have to pick up the guitar and play it.
LA: It's no science and there are no rules. Dylan wrote great songs in 15 minutes, Leonard Cohen took 15 years to write Hallelujah...
Thank you for taking the time!
Thank you!
Lail Arad and JF Robitaille will be playing in Berlin very soon, on the 19th of October 2017. For your chance to win 2x2 guestlist spots for their concert at Barkett go here. Good luck!

reflection caught a glimpse of me
its a little gift mix for @po1sontype! i know our interpretations of the phantom differ a bit, so i thought it might be nice to make something a bit more, forgive the expression, you? or try to, at least. by which i mean i just threw together a bunch of songs that were pretty gay that i hope you like!
listen here (yt) or here (pm) // tracklist under the cut
1. the weepies - not your year “movies, tv screens reflect, just what you expected / there’s a world of shiny people somewhere else / out there following their bliss, living easy, getting kissed / while you wonder, what else you’re doing wrong”
2. death cab for cutie - my mirror speaks “and when my mirror speaks, it never minces words / cause these eyes don’t shine half as bright / as they used to do and they haven’t for quite a while”
3. jens lekman - if i could cry (it would feel like this)
4. danger mouse & daniele luppi - two against one “oh, i get the feeling that it’s two against one / i’m already fighting me, so what’s another one / the mirror is a trigger and your mouth’s a gun / lucky for me i’m not the only one”
5. the bird and the bee - private eyes “why you try to put up a front for me / i’m a spy but i’m on your side you see / slip on, into any disguise / i’ll still know you, look into my / private eyes / they’re watching you”
6. andrew bird - roma fade “you need a witness just to know you’re there / from the tips of your fingers, every strand of hair / and know someone’s watching you, watching me, watching you / and all that we look upon / you may not know me but you feel my stare”
7. tally hall - the mind electric “someone help me / understand what’s going on inside my mind / doctor, i can’t tell if i’m not me”
8. fol chen - the holograms “i’m so sorry / i've forgotten your name / i forgot my own”
9. vampire weekend - i stand corrected “lord knows i haven’t tried / i’ll take my stand, one last time / forget the protocol / i’ll take your hand, right in mine”
10. lullatone - tracing
11. blood orange - it is what it is “time will tell if you can figure this and work it out / no one’s waiting for you anyway so don’t be stressed now / even if it’s something that you’ve had your eye on / it is what it is / ... why wasn’t it real?”
12. jf robitaille - new york “i died while i was dreaming / for a second i stopped breathing and i woke up on the quiet side of town / didn’t sleep that year at all / a haze of cigarettes and alcohol, this dust had settled in my eyes”

Match d’ouverture 2018
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d0647a5daeb2e48e61a0cc8c0efc1dd5/tumblr_inline_p297wcyxQu1qht6zt_540.jpg)
NOIRS B.Desrosy, Faubert, Lepage, Perreault, Robitaille, G: Lévesque BLANCS: Bachand, Charest, S.Desrosby, J.Gauthier, Larivière, Leroy, G: Guillemette
----------------
On pouvait entendre Leroy dire, “Over here! I’m gonna give it back to you!” avant de one-timer la passe de Larry back to Larry. 5-3 Blancs
2-1 Blancs

Heilewelt presents: Lail Arad & JF Robitaille (win tickets!)
youtube
Lail Arad is a witty woman. When she met JF Robitaille on a shared tour through Italy, they knew right away they have to write songs together. Songs with a smirk. That there was an ocean between them couldn’t stop them from making their first single “We Got It Coming”, produced by Mike Lindsey (Tunng). That may explain the little quirky note of this wonderful Folk song. It’s also a song we should all play in the upcoming grey days and sing “we will survive the winter” together. We can start on their current 40 dates tour through Europe where they play some of their own songs but also what they wrote together and witness the beautiful chemistry between these two.
To have a chance to win 2x2 guestlist spots for Lail Arad and JF Robitaille concert on the 19th of October 2017 at Barkett, Berlin, simply mail to [email protected]. The winner will be contacted two days before the show. Good luck!
Have a good week,

Montreal’s JF Robitaille drops first single “Missing You” from forthcoming new LP.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/144c7a8ea93b035b7959d5ee345a992a/tumblr_inline_o4q0wrjQEA1svbzqr_540.jpg)
Montreal bred songwriter JF Robitaille is no stranger to lofty expectations. Yes, he’s long been celebrated as one of the most engaging songwriters North of the 49 and with 2013’s Rival Hearts, the world began to take notice. After the album charted in Germany, he found himself playing at Hamburg’s fabled Reeperbahn Festival along with several other gigs throughout that country.
Robitaille’s international rep began to resemble his accolades in Canada. Here, a troubadour cut from the same cloth as Leonard Cohen. Or Nick Drake. Or Bob Dylan.
“one gorgeous track from an artist we wish we’d discovered earlier”
Now Robitaille brings to us Palace Blues the most ambitious album he has ever written. Recorded in familiar environs—it was captured at Preston, Ontario’s House of Miracles with longtime friend and bassist-guitarist Tavo Diez de Bonilla (Jenn Grant), drummer Marshall Bureau, keyboardist J.J. Ipsen (Hayden, Jim Guthrie), and horn player-guitarist, studio owner Andy Magoffin who also engineered the sessions. The result is his boldest, brassiest, and most accomplished work yet. No small feat.
On the first single Missing You he taps Canadian indie-rock mainstay Julie Doiron (Eric’s Trip) to add bright dabs of vocal colour.
