When I was a kid, WFRR gave me nightmares because of the shoe. Which is literally a way of having the villain kill a dog on screen. Without actually killing a dog.

BUT YES.

Not even getting into the artistic feats of the movie (there's a reason most animation mixed with real life movies are bad and WFRR is not, and it's that WFRR went the extra mile to make the Toons real and lifelike (the lamp in the hidden room in the bar and all the shading and all the extra work that they did not do that they did so that Roger felt real in real space - that's another thing, that's not what you're talking about)) - WFRR is a masterpiece. It knows what it is trying to say and it says it and it does a fantastic job saying it in a way that sticks.

Man, when I was a kid, I did not understand the plot of this movie at all. I just knew the rabbit was goofy and funny. But Who Framed Roger Rabbit still holds up and still has meaningful things to say.

Judge Doom's plan is gentrification. That's what this movie's about. We live in a segregated society where Toons have their space and humans have our space. We bring Toons into our space to be serfs for the humans but we expect them to go back and use their designated public spaces.

But now the space they've been given to live in is inconvenient for capitalists, who want to build in the space they're occupying. The murder that Eddie's investigating is part of a political scheme to buy up the land that the Toons occupy so he can run 'em all out and replace their homes with urban development.

Where are they going to go, when they aren't welcome in our spaces and we've destroyed theirs? Not the capitalists' problem. Lots of them will probably be killed anyway.

The movie even makes the point that Doom's capitalist dream isn't beneficial to anyone but him. He's got dollar signs in his eyes for what his future will hold, but nobody else wants this. They don't want his freeway. The city already has reliable public transportation - which is why, in a fit of capitalism, Doom bought out the public transit system so he could tear it down and force people to use his freeway instead.

This is real history. This is exactly what happened. This is how we were forced to replace a system of buses and trains with a system of private automobiles, so that men like Doom could line their pockets with new business opportunities at our expense. Replacing systems that benefit the public with systems that only benefit shareholders because there's money to be made by making everyone's lives worse.

Meanwhile, the revelation that Doom himself is a Toon masquerading as a human. Disavowing his own culture because he can instead make a tidy profit by selling out to the ruling class. Painting himself in the skin of the oppressor so that he can be the one doing the oppressing instead - all for the sake of his own profit and his own aggrandizement.

This movie has so much to say that's still relevant today.
