Tag: Character Inspiration

This is the last tag on my to do list. I'll have to recheck the notes but I think this about wraps it up thus far. It’s also the one I took the longest to complete…

Rules: Pick a character(s) from your wip(s) and tell who they were inspired by or from.

Ok! So I had to go digging through some old files for this tag. All of the main characters in the Festival project started out as voices for news articles to develop the world of Hollow Grove. All of them and the world itself have changed a lot since their initial conception in late 2016. One day I may share those early character sketches.

But now to the tag proper!

Mariela: Visually, I drew a lot of inspiration from Eryn Allen Kane and Jessica Williams. The inspiration for her personality is a lot harder to pin down for me. I drew a lot of her interests and beliefs from my own but she's also fearless, sarcastic, and does not take any shit. I think of Nellie Bly and Ida B. Wells—she looks up to as heroes in her profession. I'm going to get a little deep and say she initially gave voice to some feelings I had about the world circa 2016 but she's not just that anymore.

September: Visually, the actors Gilbert Roland with a sprinkling of Ramon Novarro. Cecil Palmer's character in Welcome to Night Vale is baked somewhere deep in September's DNA. I'll also reveal my inner Whovian and admit that his character was very much inspired by The Doctor (particularly a mix of the Tennant (circa Donna Noble) and Capaldi eras), though replace their energetic eccentricity with that of a mild mannered, dry humored professor and you have September. At least on the surface. He's a mess beneath it all.

Hero: Out of all the characters, Hero is the character I put a lot of myself in personality wise, especially as I was right after college. As an intern at the in-universe newspaper, he gave a lot of voice to the ennui of finding your way in adult life mixed with dry humor and a hint of fatalism. After years of character development, he's not just that anymore but that is still a key component of his character. Visually, the best approximation I could find is Mackenyu as he appears in Chihayafuru.

Emery: Emery is also a response to some feelings I had about the world in 2016. Someone who, on the surface, is very salt of the earth--telling things as they are whether or not you like to hear it--but deep down is frustrated and put upon like everyone else, and has very different conclusions about it. There's definitely an injection of Ron Swanson from Parks & Rec in his character but he also comes off as the straight man in whatever wacky scenario I put him in. Visually, he's a mix of a younger, close shaven Zach Gallifinakis and Jesse Plemons.

Regina: Regina's look is very much inspired by the old vamps of Hollywood like Theda Bara (and some heavy doses of Zoey Deschanel) with some of Morticia Adams macabre sensibilities. She has a touch of quirky eccentricity that I drew from Regina Spektor's music, particularly "Pavlov's Daughter." She's daring and histrionic--a perfect mishmash of qualities. A mystery even to myself until recently.

QX Gaygala 2023 blev ett tjusigt 25-årsjubileum med stora känslor, överraskningar och uppträdanden som lyfte taket.

Det blev en fantastisk kväll när QX-galan fyllde 25 år i början av februari. Sissela Kyle ledde galan för 8:e gången, men det här var även hennes sista, Gaygalamormor har nämligen gått i pension nu sa hon från scenen. Årets QX-gala började stillsamt och vackert då Omar Rudberg sjöng ledmotivet från Young Royals tillsammans med en kör, samtliga iklädda Hillerskas skoluniformer. I slutet av låten delade sig kören och Edvin gjorde entré på scenen och gick fram till Omar. De kramade om varandra till publikens jubel och Edvin ropade ut ”Välkomna till Gaygalan 2023”. Och vi var igång!

Som vanligt blandas humor och allvar på galan, Sissela hade ett sylvasst manus som Edward af Sillén och Daniel Rehn skrivit och drog ner skratt på skratt från en heltänd publik. Hon slog sig ner i Christer Lindarws knä och undrade om de verkligen hade fått fast på den där kobran som rymt från Skansen och sjöng en ny text till Pärleporten till hbtq-nominerade Andreas Wijk, ”han har öppnat garderoben, så att du kan komma ut”.

Sissela berättade om svenska hjälten Julia som bor i Oslo med sin flickvän och som övermannade terroristen som sköt ihjäl två personer utanför en gayklubb i Oslo på midsommarafton. Julia välkomnades in på scenen och hyllades stort av en publik som gav henne kvällens längsta applåd.

På scenen fick vi även en artistkavalkad med bland andra Molly Hammar, som även vann pris för bästa låt, vi fick besök av Zara Larsson som började med att sjunga duett med sig själv i låten ”Uncover” från Gaygalan 2013 för att sedan framföra nya singeln ”Can’t tame her”. Sanna Nielsen gav oss melloklassikern ”I’m in love”, medan Medina fick taket att lyfta med sin ”In i dimman”. Men mest jubel av alla fick ändå damtrion Hanson, Carson, Malmqvist när de gjorde entré och framförde ”C’est la vie”.

Mian Lodalen tilldelades QX Hederspris och blev inte bara galans gladaste vinnare utan mest överraskade vinnare då vi inte meddelat henne i förväg, sekunderna när hon insåg att hon skulle få Hederspriset var magiska!

Sveriges nya dragmamma Robert Fux delade ut priset Årets Drag och sa bland annat ”Glitter är mod, glitter är kamp, och kampen är inte över på långa vägar”.

Petra ”September” Marklund gav oss ett sjukt snyggt hitsmedley som fick varenda kotte på fötter. ”Snickar-Björn” som kommit ut som Lee hyllades stort för sitt mod och delade ut Årets Tv-program till Young Royals medan Årets HBTQ delades ut av Benjamin Ingrosso och gick till Edvin Törnblom som tackade den äldre generationen gays för allt de gjort i kampen för hbtq-rättigheter.

Sedan stod hon bara där på scenen, Leila K, feat Jessica Folcker och framförde ikoniska ”Electric” och varenda gäst på Cirkus dansade sjöng och skrek i extas. En av många överraskningar vilket blivit lite av galans signum genom de 25 åren som den funnits.

In order to become a novelist, the American Jew must learn a language (learn it not as his teachers teach it, but as he speaks it with his own stubborn tongue) more complex than a mere lexicon of American words. He must assimilate a traditional vocabulary of images and symbols, changing even as he approaches it—must use it, against the grain as it were, to create a compelling counter-image of the Jew, still somehow authentically American.

No wonder Jews are not only businessmen and workers, trade-union officials and lawyers, psychoanalysts and theater-owners but even actors, singers, musicians, composers of popular songs and makers of movies before they are writers. First the world of work and commerce, then of the professions, next that of popular culture, and only last of all, that of serious literature opens up to the American Jew. He can make the nation's songs like Irving Berlin or define its dream of the vamp like Theda Bara; he can even provide the ersatz of fiction like Fannie Hurst or Edna Ferber, act out for the laughs travesties of himself on the vaudeville stage with Smith and Dale or in the Saturday Evening Post with Montague Glass's Potash and Perlmutter. On such a level he speaks neither as a Jew becoming an American nor as an American who was a Jew; he communicates in the nonlanguage of anticulture, becomes his own stereotype. It is for this reason that the popular arts in the United States continue to this day to speak with a stage "Jewish accent." This is, however, only one more hindrance in the way of the serious Jewish writer, who must come to terms not only with Achsa Fielding and Gabriel von Gelt, but also with Sophie Tucker and Eddie Cantor.
