NEET 2020 on July 26 & JEE Main to begin on July 18, says HRD Minister - Times of India

NEET 2020 on July 26 & JEE Main to begin on July 18, says HRD Minister - Times of India
NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Human Resource and Development on Tuesday announced the fresh schedule for Joint Entrance Exam-Mains (JEE-Mains) and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
As per the announcement the JEE (Mains) 2020 will be conducted between July 18-23 while NEET 2020 will be held on July 26, 2020.
“JEE-Mains will be held from July 18-23, while JEE-Advanced will be held in August. NEET will be conducted on July 26,” Nishank said.
A decision will soon be taken on the pending CBSE Class 10, 12 board exams, he added.
While Joint Entrance Exam-Mains (JEE-MAINS) is conducted for admission to engineering colleges across the country, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is held for medical colleges.
The entrance exam schedule for the doctors/engineers was announced by the HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on May 5.
The exams were postponed due to nationwide lockdown announced to contain the Covid-19 spread.
More than 15 lakh students across the country have registered for NEET this year, which is the gateway to medical colleges in India, whereas more than 9 lakh have registered for JEE Mains, the entrance exam for all other engineering colleges except IITs.
The HRD Ministry’s National Testing Agency (NTA) had also given students an option to change their opted centres for the two tests as students have moved to different places since the lockdown.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has yet to announce the remaining Class X and XII remaining examinations, however the paper evaluation work is to begin soon. Many states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh have started their exam papers evaluation work.

Government to announce fixed calendar for JEE (Main), NEET, CUET from 2023
NEW Delhi : In Order to streamline the conduct of competitive examinations and avoid last-minute confusion, the government plans to have a fixed calendar for undergraduate admission tests like the joint entrance examination (JEE-Main), national eligibility-cum entrance
test (NEET-UG) and common university entrance test (CUETUG) from 2023. The ministry of education is likely to make an announcement to streamline the exam schedule for admissions to engineering, medical and undergraduate colleges this week. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which held back the notification for JEE (Main) January exams, is also expected to come up with application and exam dates this week. According to sources in the University Grants Commission, a committee is working on the fixed exam calendar. Official in the know said the standardised calendar will help aspirants prepare better for different exams. The schedule of the competitive tests was disrupted since the outbreak of the Covid-9 pandemic in 2020. “The JEE (Main) dates would be in mid-January and April, while the CUET-UG is likely to be held between the third week of April and first week of May. NEET-UG would continue to be held on the first Sunday of May. The exact dates would be notified separately closer to the exams. The calendar is also likely to announce the probable period of application process,” an official said. While a section of JEE (Main) and NEET-UG aspirants are demanding that the two engineering entrance tests be conducted in April and May and the medical entrance test in June, officials said this would again push the new academic session beyond August. “If the first JEE (Main) is conducted in April, the aspirants, many of whom take all the three exams, would be appearing
for back-to-back exams without any gaps. Also the idea of conducting the exam twice is to give an opportunity to improve as well as to ensure that in case a candidate is unable to appear in one due to various reasons, s/he will get some time to prepare. Back-to-back exams won’t serve the purpose,” said the official.

Millions of Indian students sit university entrance exams after government disregards protests to postpone them

Millions of Indian students sit university entrance exams after government disregards protests to postpone them
Some of the country's schools are also set to reopen later this month

Around 2.8 million Indian students sat university examinations from the end of the August to September 13 as the country approaches the grim milestone of 5-million total COVID-19 cases. Despite pleas from civil society to defer examinations, including by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, a Supreme Court ruling on August 17 gave the government the green light to keep the original schedule for the engineer and medical colleges entrance exams. The JEE and the NEET, how university exams for those two careers are called, are India's most competitive — they sprawl industries of their own, with preparation courses generating millions of dollars annually. The court bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan said that “the career of the students cannot be put on peril for long and a full academic year cannot be wasted.” The court will not hear any further petitions regarding postponing future exam dates. Journalist S Poorvaja tweeted:
Students are being sent out of the centre after the exam in batches. #NEET2020 @THChennai pic.twitter.com/McnRO1de89 — S Poorvaja (@_poorvaja) September 13, 2020
The Union Cabinet Minister for Education Ramesh Pokhriyal tweeted:
NTA informed me that around 85-90% students appeared in #NEET exam today. I sincerely thank all Chief Ministers and @DG_NTA for proper arrangements made to facilitate student participation. #NEET participation reflects the tenacity and grit of young #AtmaNirbharBharat . — Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank (@DrRPNishank) September 13, 2020
According to the Ministry of Education, 74 percent of the students registered to the first of the JEE took the exam, while an above 80-percent attendance was observed for the NEET exam. Students are now gearing up for the second stage of the JEE (the JEE Advanced), which will take place on September 27. Protests against the exam date have dwindled since the Supreme Court decision.
Reopening schools
In addition, Indian schools outside of containment zones are preparing to resume offline classes starting September 21, despite protests from parents, teachers and activists to also postpone school reopening. Containment zones are geographical areas, usually of a three-kilometre radius, where a high number of COVID-19 cases have been reported. Most activities are restricted in the containment zones, with only essential services being allowed to function. The schools allowed to resume classes will have to follow guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, including mandatory mask-wearing, physical distancing, and enhanced cleaning of facilities. India's schools have been closed since March when the central government imposed one of the world's strictest lockdowns.
Student protests
During the month of August, protests against the government's maintaining of university examination dates erupted in pockets across India.

JEET-NEET brings in yet another student protest. . .
JEE Main is scheduled from 1st to 6th September, and the NEET is slated to be conducted on September 13th. .
In Kolkata, several students holding placards can be seen protesting over the decision. . .
Students across India have been up in arms demanding that the examinations be delayed. Countrywide student protests have continued non-stop — from Bihar, Gujarat and Assam, to those in Jammu and Kashmir where internet restrictions continue making preparation for exams a challenge. . . .
As many as six opposition-ruled states moved the Supreme Court Friday seeking review of its order permitting the Centre to conduct NEET and JEE entrance exams this year. . . . . . #neet #aiims #mbbs #medical #biology #neetpreparation #jee #neetug #doctor #neetexam #physics #chemistry #medico #cbse #science #education #kota #medicalstudent #iit #medicine #kotacoaching #neetaspirants #jeemains #iitjee #neetmotivation #futuredoctor #doctors #neetcoaching #JEE

//www.instagram.com/embed.js Students’ concerns ranged from possible agglomeration in test centres and means of transportation to them. Many suburban and rural areas are also under containment zones, where transportation is restricted. Besides, the states of Bihar, Asam and Gujarat were heavily struck by floods in recent weeks, affecting the students’ ability to prepare for the tests. The National President of the All India Students’ Association (AISA) N Sai Balaji tweeted on August 22:
#INDIAunitedtoPostponeJEE_NEET Students are begging for life and you are rigid to take exam. No “logic” can win over “Life” . Consider your decision, they do not want to risk their family lives @DrRPNishank

Protests also happened online as social distancing measures were still in place in large parts of India. The hashtag #StudentLivesMatter has been trending in India since July, and #JEENEETpostpone since August. Online protests often used satire, with memes and elaborate videos arguing that students should not be forced to risk theirs and their families’ health in order to sit the exams. Celebrities and social media influencers also joined the campaign to postpone the exams. Some students have pointed out the irony of the Supreme Court ruling that obligated students to sit exams amid the pandemic was made via conference call. Students also mass disliked a video by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on YouTube in which he praises the educational system for “raising to challenges” posed by the pandemic and the government's response overall. Modi doesn't address the JEE and NEET issue in the video.

Over the next two weeks, more than 2.4 million Indian students will answer the medical entrance test NEET, and the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE), a qualifying exam for engineering schools, which commences today. The government has refused to defer these exams despite vociferous protest from students and opposition parties. Since then, aspiring engineers and doctors have protested the government decision by spamming Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recently uploaded YouTube video with more than 900,000 dislikes and 155,000 comments. Click the link in bio to know more about why students are angry and worried about answering highly competitive exams in the country with the highest daily tally of COVID-19 cases.

The JEE(main and advanced) and the NEET(undergraduate) have been postponed to September 2020. A decision to this effect has been taken on Friday following the recommendation of the expert committee set up by the ministry of human resource development on Thursday. The computer based multi-session JEE (main) examinations will be held from September 1 to September 6, while the JEE (advanced) will be held on September 27, 2020. The pen-paper mode entrance for medical colleges, NEET-UG will be conducted on September 13, 2020. "Safety of the students is paramount and keeping that in view and to ensure quality education we have decided to postpone the exams,” said Ramesh Pokhriyal, union minister for HRD. According to a senior HRD official, “The committee in its report recommended postponing the exam after reviewing the prevailing situation. There are a large number of centres which fall under the containment zones and large areas in Assam and Bihar are facing floods. Therefore, it would not be possible to conduct the exams in the present scenario.” The delay in the entrance exams will have a cascading effect on the new academic session. The new academic session for the first year students, as per present planning, is expected to commence from November. According to a senior HRD official, "The counselling and admission process for engineering and medical colleges is expected to be completed by mid-November. Hence the session is likely to start between the fourth week of November or first week of December. However, this too is subject to the prevailing conditions." The IITs take around a month to complete its joint counselling process. It will take around a week to announce the results from the date of exam, which is September 27. Therefore the IITs are likely to start their 2020-21 session from the first week of December.
