Anyways, on a positive note, here's a little-known Hi-NRG disco smash, "Bring It Back" by Taka Boom, aka Chaka Khan's younger sister. This one was released on JDC Records.

(JTA) — A catalog of calamities is central to the liturgy of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the Jewish High Holidays that begin later this week.
We Jews are asked to imagine ourselves perched on the precipice of life and death. Nothing frames it as starkly as Unetaneh Tokef, the roll call of ruin enumerating various disasters that might befall us in the coming year.
With its repetition of “Who by …” fill-in-the-blank awfulness — strangling, stoning, famine and plague — the medieval poem is the stuff of myth and legend, an opportunity to ponder fate and frailty. But for the Jews of Ukraine, the majority of whom remain in the country despite the ongoing conflict, the text is heart-wrenchingly real.
When we Jews pray, we face east, toward Jerusalem. But as the grandson of a Ukrainian Jew, east always conjures “the old country” — that’s where my soul calls home and where I’ve often directed my most fervent prayers. This year, Unetaneh Tokef is a compass for my heart.
I’m sure “who by water” resonates for Lyubov Irzhanskaya. When the Kakhovka dam burst in June, the Dnipro River surged into her second-floor apartment. The 76-year-old retired teacher had hours to decide where to flee.
“Who by fire” must send a chill through Lyudmila Dobroyer, 87 — a Holocaust survivor and the primary caregiver for her son Yuriy, who has developmental disabilities. During attacks on Odesa this summer, her building was badly damaged.
And then there are more workaday terrors, fears that keep me up at night half a world away in my safe Ohio bed. What if I lost my job and couldn’t provide for my family? What if it happened amidst power cuts and sub-zero cold?
“Who shall become impoverished” — ask Evgeniy Moshkovitch, 40, a forklift operator who fled Kherson with his family two months into the crisis. With employers skeptical of the displaced, he’s unable to find a job and relies on Jewish community assistance to pay the bills.
Grim as it is, Unetaneh Tokef isn’t about blindly submitting to fate. Instead, it gives us the keys to our own salvation — ”repentance, prayer, and charity,” it exhorts, “can lessen the severity of the decree.”
Our own hands can rescue us, and post-Soviet Jews, who’ve doggedly rekindled identity and community after the Holocaust and communism, could teach a master class. As a longtime staffer at the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, or JDC, the humanitarian organization that for decades has aided needy Jews and built Jewish life across the former Soviet Union, I’ve seen it firsthand.
In Ukraine, I’ve witnessed local Jews volunteering for relief efforts in record numbers and my colleagues delivering over 800 tons of humanitarian aid, home care to the bedridden and Shabbat gatherings during air-raid sirens. We’re also addressing new waves of need: unemployment, educational gaps and trauma — all with an imperative to strengthen lives, even if peace remains elusive.
Hidden in Unetaneh Tokef’s horrors are some best-case scenarios, too: “who shall be exalted,” “who shall reach the fullness of their days.” What if it all goes right, the prayer asks? What if we sustain each other? What if we write our most vulnerable into the High Holidays’ symbolic Book of Life?
We can do that by marshaling our resources, as my organization has done since February 2022 with tens of millions of dollars from our partners — the Jewish Federations of North America, the Claims Conference, International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, individuals, families, corporations and foundations — and by lifting up individual stories so we understand the stakes if we fail to act.
For centuries, Jews have debated the identity of the nameless Unetaneh Tokef writer who gave voice to the cruel uncertainty of human existence and the possibility of redemption even in the darkness.
That anonymity hasn’t blunted the poem’s cold wisdom — life will often disappoint you, but it just might surprise you, too. I’ve learned that by listening to other Jews who could just as easily be lost to history and have just as much to teach.
In western Ukraine earlier this year, I met Liliya Sumka, the last Jew in a small village only accessible by dirt roads. A 54-year-old widow with cerebral palsy, she ekes by on a $52 monthly disability pension.
For her, the difference between “who shall live and who shall die” is sometimes the stack of firewood and food packages delivered by my organization — or finding God in her own still small voice reciting the Shabbat blessings.
“Life?” Liliya chided me with a wry smile. “You can’t make it through that alone.”
May we all remember that, recognizing that we only get to fullness by giving it — showing up with full hearts and a full commitment to aiding those living on a knife’s edge around the clock, not just in the pages of our prayer books.

A-T-4 152 David Storrs & Chris "The Glove" Taylor featuring Ice-T
I've learned more about David Storrs. After graduating from UCLA Storrs (as David Stores) shows up as a dancer in Toni Basil's Word Of Mouth video, this is the video that kickstarts her pop career and you can see the video here. Basil had been a dancer and choreographer in Hollywood since the 1960s she was also a founding member of the street dance group The Lockers
Most of the tracks in this post will be from the films Breakin' and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo (Breakdance in Europe). Shabba-Doo who plays Ozone in these films was also a member of The Lockers. Toni Basil's Word Of Mouth video leads to two specials being made for the BBC, Toni Basil Tape 1 and Toni Basil Tape 2, Shabba-Doo is in both of these specials
In early 1980s in the MacArthur Park area of LA was a place punk rock bands rehearsed but on Fridays between 11pm and 5am it became a club called Radio. This was a fashionable hotspot that attracted celebrities like Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan, and Toni Basil. Being on the scene David Storrs visited Radio Club and it was here where he met DJ Pebo who worked for JDC Records. DJ Pebo introduced Storrs to the Radio Crew. Radio Crew was an impromptu name for the DJ's and MC's who performed at Radio Club. The name came about in 1983 when director Topper Carew produced a documentary about the Radio Club called Breakin' 'n' Enterin'. The Radio Crew were Egyptian Lover, Chris "The Glove" Taylor, Ice T, and Radio Club owner Super AJ (Alex Jordanov). A rare as hens teeth five track Radio Crew EP was pressed up for the Breakin' And Enterin' documentary crew
One of the featured b boys in Breakin' And Enterin' is (the other guy credited with teaching Michael Jackson the backslide) Boogaloo Shrimp. He was a well respected b boy at Radio Club and would be cast as Turbo in the films Breakin' and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo
David Storrs and DJ Pebo formed a record label called ElectroBeat and promptly signed The Glove, Ice T, and another Radio Club MC 14-year-old Kid Frost. Rough Cut by Kid Frost would be first release for ElectroBeat
David Storrs seems to be a bit of a polymath. As well as dancing with Toni Basil he had a BSc in Electrical Engineering and was in-house composer, producer, and musician at Valley of the Sun Publishing (see Sunday's post). Storrs released New Age music for Valley Of The Sun as a solo artist and as part of the group Upper Astral. Kid Frost gave Storrs the name "The Alien Wizard" for all the creative and unique tracks that he laid. In 1985 Kid Frost and David Storrs would release Terminator, a track that was popular in the UK thanks to its inclusion on Street Sounds Electro 9, this being my era I can still recite all the words to this track
The Glove was a scratch DJ but on Kid Frost's Rough Cut they use World Class Wreckin Crew DJ and future member of NWA, Yella. ElectroBeat's second released was Ice-T's double A-side Killers/Body Rock. Ice-T's name for David Storrs was "Davey PHD". It wasn't until ElectroBeat's third release that David Storrs would collaborate with The Glove, the result is the remarkable Itchiban [not Ichiban] Scratch
The studio engineer Victor Flores also worked on Itchiban Scratch, Flores had worked with The Glove earlier producing megamixes like the ones I shared here
I've also shared Itchiban Scratch but as this is David Storrs and Chris "The Glove" Taylor's first release together here's an extract from the long b-side
youtube
Chris “The Glove” Taylor & Dave Storrs with Karlos Z and Victor Flores - Itchiban's Bonus Beats (extract) everybody loves a 303
DJ Pebo and David Storrs timing couldn't have been better. After watching Breakin' 'n' Enterin' a representative of Cannon Films turned up at Radio Club with an offer to film a low-budget movie there. Carmelo Alvarez who had been given the building accepted. Working in David Storrs' garage studio The Glove and Storrs produced an instrumental called Reckless which they submitted to be used in the film. Ice T and the Glove were given parts in the movie, essentially playing themselves. Ice T added a vocal to Reckless (and apparently this inspires Eminem to take up rapping). The film was Breakin' and it was the surprise hit of the summer. Storrs, The Glove, and Ice T also contribute a second track to the film, Tibetan Jam which is used in the famous first battle scene
youtube
Here's the instrumental (don't worry I'll get to Reckless)
youtube
Chris "The Glove" Taylor & David Storrs feat. Ice T - Tibetan Jam
You may have noticed that the graffiti behind Ice T and The Glove in the above film clip reads Radio♥︎Tron. The writer Craze originally sprayed up Radio Club but Super AJ protested. The word "Club" got buffed and replaced with "Tron" (probably because of the movie Tron). The name stuck and between 1983 until it closed in 1986 Radio Club became the legendary RadioTron, a cultural mecca for West Coast breakers and grafitti artists
Tibetan Jam isn't included on the Breakin' soundtrack album but it does appear as the b-side of the single version of Reckless released by major label Polydor
youtube
Chris "The Glove" Taylor & David Storrs feat. Ice T - Reckless
Reckless is a well respected track and it gave the soundtrack to Breakin' some authenticity. The Breakin' OST is at all bad
Chaka Khan contributed her and Rufus's 1983 hit Aint Nobody to the Breakin' OST. When it came to the video for her next single I Feel For You in the Autumn of 1984 a set was built to look like RadioTron. The Glove was cast again as the DJ. Breakin' stars Shabba-Doo and Boogaloo Shrimp were featured dancers along side other RadioTron regulars Bruno "Pop N Taco" Falcon and Ana "Lollipop" Sánchez - both of whom appear in Breakin'
youtube
Chris "The Glove" Taylor & David Storrs feat. Ice T - Reckless (Instrumental)
Capitalising on the box office success of Breakin' and the time sensitive popularity of breakin' (which would fall out of fashion in the US but as with turntablism and graffiti would be kept growing in Europe then make its way back to the US in the late 1990s) Cannon Pictures quickly put out Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo by the end of 1984. This might seem an incredible feat if you don't know Cannon Pictures
Chris "The Glove" Taylor and Ice T reprise their roles in the second film. Although Chris "The Glove" Taylor, David Storrs, and Ice T don't appear on the Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo soundtrack album their tracks are used in the film in key scenes. The first is a new version of Reckless with different words known as "Reckless Rivalry Combat" or simply "Combat"
youtube
Chris "The Glove" Taylor & David Storrs feat. Ice T - Reckless Rivalry Combat
youtube
Chris "The Glove" Taylor & David Storrs feat. Ice T - Party People (Go Off) then there's this "Party People (Go Off)" from the RadioTron club scene
David Storrs also released the single "Dancing On The Planet" in 1984 but it's a bit meh. He would continue with ElectroBeat for another year and then move into soundtracks (including one opposite Chaz Jankel). Whilst doing this Storrs would continue to make New Age music. His contribution to West Coast electro and hip hop is sadly forgotten
Chris "The Glove" Taylor now goes by the name Glove. He would become a producer and engineer for Death Row and Aftermath Records. His own group Po' Broke & Lonely were signed to Eazy-E's Ruthless Records. He's rightly considered a West Coast hip hop pioneer

finished Disco. haaa, the ending was much better the second time around (maybe because the first time I was really exhausted while reading, and also this time I knew some Unfortunate stuff was coming and could prepare)
some details felt new to me, like all the suricate comparisons for Nils, and I'm not sure if it's just my poor memory or if Maijo edited some stuff later, I'll have to check (I'm assuming the translation is based on the 2-volume edition, and the one I read first was the 3-volume ebook)
maybe I will write more thoughts later, but for now... if you need me, I will be recovering emotionally by staring at this glorious page from the annex. wait why doesn't Nils get a page this is bullshit

How Alaska airlines airlifted 50,000 Yemenites to Israel
With thanks: Frank Seventy years this month, a daring mission to airlift 50,000 Jews from Yemen to Israel, dubbed On Eagles' wings, or Operation Magic Carpet,  came to an end. It was made possible with the bravery and heroism  of the pilots of Alaska Airlines.  They did not lose a single passenger, despite sandstorms and enemy gunfire. The last surviving crew member, Captain Elgen Long,  described the mission as the highlight of his flying career. Yanky Fachler takes up the story: Another Alaska Airlines pilot was Robert F. Maguire Jr., the chief pilot of Operation Magic Carpet, and incidentally the son of an American judge at the Nuremberg war trials. Maguire had enlisted in the Army Air Corps the day after Pearl Harbour.  Before becoming a pilot with Alaska Airlines, he had flown in the Pacific region during the war. During Operation Magic Carpet, he flew between 270 and 300 hours each month, at a time when the United States limit under its aviation rules was 90 hours. Maguire relied as much on his wits as on his aviation skills. A typical work day on Operation Magic Carpet was 16 to 20 hours long.  After unloading passengers in Tel Aviv, Maguire and his crew usually flew on to Cyprus to spend the night there because of the danger of being caught up in the fighting between Israel and its Arab neighbours. Each flight was perilous. Fuel was scarce and sandstorms were frequent. Landing on Arab soil was to be avoided at all costs. The pilots were warned of the dire consequences if that happened.  The passengers would likely be killed.  On one trip, McGuire ran out of fuel and was forced to land on a runway in Egypt. When airport officials rushed to the plane, the quick-thinking Maguire asked them to send ambulances immediately to take passengers to the nearest hospital.  "Why?" they asked. "Smallpox," he replied. He got his fuel in record speed, and flew on to Tel Aviv. When Alaska Airlines had to withdraw after a few months into the operation, Maguire started his own company, Near East Air Transport, hiring planes and pilots from Alaska Airlines, and continued the job. David Ben-Gurion was reported to have called Robert Maguire “the Irish Moses.” • Quite why Ben Gurion thought that Maguire was Irish is not known.  The writer Leon Uris used Maguire as a model for his fictional character Foster J. MacWilliams, the chief pilot of the fictional Artic Circle Airways, in his 1958 novel, "Exodus." Another Uris character, “Stretch” Thompson, was based on Alaska Airlines boss James Wooten. • In 2004, Maguire was awarded a medal of valour by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre for his role in rescuing the Jews of Yemen. Warren Metzger was a DC-4 captain with Alaska Airlines and his wife Marian was a flight attendant, when they embarked on what turned out to be one of the greatest feats in the airline’s history. "One of the things that really got to me was when we were unloading a plane at Tel Aviv," said Marian, who assisted Israeli nurses on a number of flights. "A little old lady came up to me and took the hem of my jacket and kissed it. “She was giving me a blessing for getting them home. We were the wings of eagles."

A child arrives in Tel Aviv with Alaska Airlines (JDC archives) Before Operation Magic Carpet, the Metzger couple had been involved in the Berlin airlift, and helped repatriate Jews from Shanghai who had fled to China before WW2 to escape persecution in Germany. Now that the communists had come to power in China, Alaska Airlines flew the German Jews to Israel. Tragically, while not a single Yemenite refugee died during the rescue mission itself, some 850 Yemenite Jews had died en route to their departure points or while waiting in the transit camp in Aden.  Infant mortality rates were high, and Ben-Gurion noted in his diary that Yemenite children in the Israeli ma'abarot – the tent transit camps - were dying like flies. As the Jerusalem Post reported on 25 September 1950, Operation Magic Carpet came to an end that evening at 10 pm at Lydda Airport. The two aircraft which wound up the operation landed within ten minutes of each other.  Among those gathered at the airfield to meet them were the two Chief Rabbis of Israel, our own Dr Isaac Halevi Herzog and Rabbi Ben Zion Hai Uziel.  The planes parked close to each other, and health formalities were completed aboard the planes. Some of the new arrivals on this final trip had been among the first to arrive at Aden, but had stayed on there until the end, to help with the camp arrangements.  They were greeted enthusiastically by the former camp staff with whom they had worked for many months and who had come to see them arrive. A surprise witness to the emotional scenes at the airport was Mrs. Lorna Wingate, the widow of General Orde Wingate. Lorna had arrived from London earlier that evening, in order to attend the foundation stone ceremony of the Wingate Youth Village.  She stayed at the airport so that she could witness the Magic Carpet complete its operations. Another Alaska Airlines pilot was Stanley “Buddy” Epstein, a Jewish Machal volunteer from the USA who served as a pilot in Air Transport Command.  Although not a religious man, Epstein said later that Operation Magic Carpet had to have been blessed by God because the possibility of any of these airplanes being successful was pretty remote.  Epstein, a pilot and maintenance specialist, contracted with Alaska Airlines to help with “Operation Magic Carpet” after having airlifted supplies from Czechoslovakia to Israel. “We flew almost continuously from Christmas Eve 1948 to nearly a year later,” said Epstein, “and never lost a life or had an injury from an accident. “One airplane undershot the runway in Asmara, but it didn’t burn, even though it was loaded with gasoline barrels. “We had a few bullet holes.” Epstein noted that the C-46 aircraft were carrying 76 passengers per trip – nearly 30 more than licensed for, based on the average passenger weight and the number of aircraft exits. Epstein said at the time: “If there was a single reason felt by all of the English-speaking flight crews and other volunteers, it was a feeling of “never again” after the press and other news media dramatically revealed the stories of the Holocaust.” Alaska Airlines president James Wooton shares his memories of the first flight in 1949. Breakdown
A/N: My piece for a prompt in the @jdc-discord. The theme was unorthodox PMA.
For Henrik, the day couldn't get much worse. Several of his patient files had gone missing, a story had appeared in the newspaper earlier that morning, claiming that he had been purposefully letting surgery patients under his care die (not that there was much evidence to support it); and the people in the lab had conveniently forgotten yet again to run the blood tests he had ordered for a vial of Jack's blood. And to top it all off, he had forgotten to restock his coffee, and he had had to send his poor new assistant off to the store to grab some.
“I just can't catch a break, can I?” he said, glancing down at Jack. He looked so peaceful, as if he was just sleeping, dreaming of some distant event or place. He would give anything for that to be the case, but the sunken look of his eyes and the IV in his hand made it painfully clear that it wasn't, and that wouldn't change. “But don't vorry. Schneeple vill push on just as he always has. Positive Mental Attitude, as you say.” Scooping up his clipboard and pen, he went through his daily routine, checking the IV and his oxygen and making corrections where necessary, and recording Jack's vitals.
“Zhey can go fuck themselves,” he said to Jack, “Right, buddy? I am only doing my best. Zhere is no need to treat me like this, tarnishing my reputation and denying me any information zhat might help you.” Henrik paused, taking a deep breath before continuing. “I am sorry, my friend. Emotions get too much for me sometimes, and I cannot stop zhe words zhat come out of my mouth. Let us continue vith your examination, yes?”
His assistant returned while he was checking the monitors, timidly presenting him with a container of coffee grounds and a fresh cup of coffee she had grabbed from a coffee stand on the way back. “I, uh, I figured you might like some right now.” Even in his bad mood, Henrik couldn't help but feel a flicker of gratitude for the young woman. After his “vacation” and sudden reappearance, she was the only one willing to accept the position as his assistant, since Janice had quit. The rumors circulating about him had scared off any other potential candidates.
She was tall, slim, with a river of fiery red hair and piercing hazel eyes. She was a bit shy, but when provoked, she could have quite a fiery temper. There had been more than one time when she had almost gone to blows with the other staff on his behalf, even after he had scolded her. She was one that always went out of her way to help those she knew.
“Thank you, Candice” he said, taking the steaming cup from her and gesturing for her to set the container on the counter. “You alvays know when I need mein caffeine.”
Candice smiled. “That's my job, Doctor.”
Schneeplestein snorted. “You know there is no need to call me zhat.”
“I know. Mostly I do it to annoy you,” she teased, brushing her hair over her shoulder. This earned a chuckle from the doctor. It felt good to laugh, even if it did nothing to make his situation any less aggravating.
“Maybe I vas right to keep you around. You have quite zhe sense of humor.”
Candice glanced down at Jack. By now, she and everyone else in the hospital knew of their connection, and the higher-ups had reluctantly agreed to let Schneeplestein stay assigned to Jack's case after he had returned from his unexpected break, after an incident involving one of the other doctors and Marvin's fist had persuaded them that it would be the safest option for everyone. Even the nurses were afraid to go near the room, should they invoke the magician's wrath.
“How is he?” she asked.
Henrik sighed heavily. “Zhe same, unfortunately. Sometimes I vonder if he will ever vake up.” He took a long draught of his coffee, hiding the tears pricking at the corners of his eyes. Although he would never admit it, he still felt the fiery sting of guilt deep in his gut whenever he gazed down at his friend. He had failed to stop the glitch, and here they were, Jack comatose, trapped inside his own head, Chase missing, and the others slowly losing hope.
He set his coffee and his clipboard on the counter and ran his hands over his face, and through his scraggly brown hair. He really needed a haircut. Candice put a hand on the bed's railing, a sad look in her eyes.
“I'm a huge fan of his videos, you know. I've only been watching the channel for a few months, but he helped me through some of the roughest times of my life.”
“He has a vay of making everyzhing better, doesn't he? It's always been something I've admired about him.” Henrik let a nostalgic smile touch his lips. Jack always had an air of positivity around him, and he lit up any room he was in. A lump formed in his throat.
“I never imagined all that stuff with Anti was real. And now that I see what he can do...” Candice met his eyes. He could see that she was scared, worried, and it made him feel even worse. “You guys can save him, right?”
The question caught Schneeplestein off guard, and all he could do for a moment was stare, jaw working as he tried to come up with a response. “I...I am not sure,” he admitted. “His condition is completely unlike anyzhing anyone has ever seen. Anti has him trapped deep in his own mind. Marvin has suggested that ve may be able to vake him using magic, but we have yet to try.” He leaned against the counter, the lump in his throat keeping him from saying more. He turned away from Candice as the tears began to fall.
Candice went to put a hand on his shoulder, then stopped, opting instead to tuck her hair behind her ear. “I'm not really the best at like, encouragement stuff, or comfort stuff, but I believe in you. I know you'll find a way.” She shifted uncomfortably as his shoulders heaved, then moved forward, finally placing a hand on his shoulder. “Are you going to be okay?”
Henrik raised his head, meeting her eyes, letting her take in his tear-stained cheeks and weary look. He tried to smile reassuringly, but it faltered and faded as soon as it appeared. “Eventually, I suppose. But right now? No, not in zhe least. I can't seem to do anyzhing right, and now Jack is paying the price for my ignorance.”
“You know what he would say if he could.”
“He vould say to keep up zhe PMA, to keep pushing forward. But I just can't. I am nozhing but a whiny little bitch baby.” He lowered his head again, ashamed. He was letting Jack down, letting himself break like this. He had to be strong, he just had to.
Candice took a moment before responding. “PMA isn't about being happy and positive all the time. Sometimes, PMA is letting yourself break down and crumple like a piece of paper. That way, you can put yourself back together in a way that makes you stronger.” Her voice cracked, and she swallowed hard. “Jack would tell you that you're trying your best, and that it's okay to feel this way sometimes. It's okay to cry and scream and have a total emotional meltdown. You're not failing, Schneep, you're doing the best you can. And that would be good enough for him.”
He didn't respond, too choked up with his own tears and gratitude to form a coherent sentence. Candice grabbed a chair from the far wall and set it behind him, gently pushing him into the seat. After making sure he was comfortable, she quietly made her way out the door, shutting it soflty behind her. She sat on a nearby bench, watching as the other doctors and nurses rushed to and fro, daring them to try and interrupt the moment Henrik so desperately needed. It was the least she could do for him in his time of need.

And finally today for this series related to the Nelson Mandela Park Public School collage that covers the headstock pillow in our Calton Case, Jessica Dargo Caplan. She was the education and outreach coordinator for the Luminato Festival back in 2009. Although I'm sure she had a lot else on the go, it felt like she was laser focussed on letting Six String Nation have as big an impact as it possibly could on the festival that year. The NMPPS project with the songwriting, recording, portraits, community and school presentations, the other outreach events we did in different parts of the city, the choir performance at YDSq, the Hardrock photo sessions, the portrait exhibit at the Roots Festival HQ and the creation of the NMPPS contribution itself were all in some way due to her tireless energy. I've always felt that the Six String Nation project had so many possible applications and it's often frustrating to have people try to pigeon-hole it. Jessica was one of the first people I encountered who saw the project the way I did and it made the festival incredibly special for us. Thank you JDC! Portrait, as always, by Doug Nicholson. Find out more about the Six String Nation project and book a live or virtual presentation at https://www.sixstringnation.com . . . . . . . #luminatofestival #multiculturalism #toronto #regentparktoronto #CanEd #jessicadargocaplan #CanadianMusic #CanadianArt #SocialStudies #CanadianGuitar #nelsonmandelaparkpublicschool #caltoncases #acousticguitar #CanadianTeachers #K12 #keynotespeaker #CdnEd #ETFO #OSSTF #EdLeaders #OECD #VoiceEd #imaginED #sixstringnation #6SN #portraits #portraitphotography https://instagr.am/p/CIEARa7H9m1/

Gone Fishing (And Caught Over The Limit)
Thursday, April 23, 2020
The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals sanctioned a county magistrate for his violation of fishing laws and attitude when cited for the offense
This matter arises from a judicial disciplinary Statement of Charges issued against the respondent, David E. Ferguson, Magistrate of Wayne County (hereinafter “the respondent”). The issues in the case surround the respondent’s violation of a state fishing law and, far more importantly, the belligerent and coercive behavior that he exhibited when Department of Natural Resources (“DNR”) officers issued him a citation. After holding an evidentiary hearing, the West Virginia Judicial Hearing Board (hereinafter “the Board”) concluded that the respondent violated several provisions of the West Virginia Code of Judicial Conduct and recommended that he be suspended for thirty days without pay, be issued a reprimand, pay a total fine of $2,000, and pay the costs of this disciplinary proceeding. Although he denied several of the charges when appearing before the Board, the respondent now indicates his willingness to accept the Board’s findings and the recommended punishment. The Office of Judicial Disciplinary Counsel (“JDC”) objects to some of the Board’s findings and the recommended sanction.
After considering the record and the parties’ written and oral arguments, we adopt the Board’s conclusions of law regarding the respondent’s rule violations with one modification. Specifically, we conclude that the respondent committed an additional violation of Rule 1.1 of the Code of Judicial Conduct. Furthermore, because of the respondent’s flagrant attempt to intimidate law enforcement officers, we find that a harsher sanction than that recommended by the Board is warranted. Therefore, we suspend the respondent for ninety days without pay, reprimand him, order him to pay a total fine of $2,000, and order him to pay the costs of this disciplinary proceeding.
