Tadejs and Jaspers are some of the most common bonded companions for your Mathieu. It is not uncommon to find trios featuring one of each, however this high-energy combination is not recommended for the novice keeper!

The Jasper:

In the wild, Jaspers are pursuit predators who hunt in groups, stalking prey across large distances. With an enormously quick turn of speed, but for a short period only, they rely on bringing down their prey at close range. The dominant Jasper usually makes the initial strike, before the rest of the group close in to complete the job. This makes them extremely suitable hunting partners for a Mathieu, as he hunts in a similar manner.

A Jasper will consume his prey in one sitting, then rest and digest until the next opportunity to hunt. These lengthy periods between hunts have led to the complex social dynamics found in Jaspers. With an outgoing nature and love of both social and physical play, a Jasper makes the perfect companion for an active and well-socialised Mathieu who loves to have fun.

Best for: Semi-aquatic Mathieus, temperate forest Mathieus, fancy Mathieus.

Not recommended for: True aquatic Mathieus, mountain Mathieus (Jaspers do not thrive at altitude), older or less-active Mathieus.

Similar species you might also consider: An Olav or Kaden.

The Tadej:

Smaller than a Mathieu, the omnivorous and adaptable Tadej is considered one of the most effective predators in the world. Found in almost every habitat save for hot deserts, a fearless Tadej may successfully take down prey twice his own size. This makes a Tadej a particularly suitable companion for a nervous Mathieu who perhaps lacks confidence in his own hunting abilities. As Tadejs are warm-blooded mammals, your Mathieu may also enjoy snuggling up against his tufted companion to bask.

Most Tadejs have an intensely curious nature, and are regularly observed in the wild making and using simple tools. Combined with their love of play, a Tadej requires a good deal of supervision, and they are notorious escape artists! However they are unlikely to go far - Tadejs will enjoy outsmarting the lock on their enclosure, but they form deep and intense bonds and tend not to leave their mates and bonded companions for very long.

Best for: Mountain Mathieus, working breeds.

Not recommended for: Desert Mathieus (Tadejs do not cope well with heat), older or less active Mathieus.

Similar species you might also consider: A Remco or Matteo.
