Because I’m a sucker for tragedy though, we also ought to keep in mind: I’m pretty sure Oromis never specifies exactly when Riders are told about Eldunarí (from what I remember it was a vague “sometimes after graduation” or just very late in training type of deal, probably taking into account the Rider’s personality and assumed likelihood of taking advantage of their dragons), and the whole ambush with five out of six dragons and Riders dying is bound to be an incredibly hectic experience on top of being traumatic.

The lens I’m doing this Jarnünvosk Eldunarí survival through is one where:

1. Galbatorix doesn’t yet know about/doesn’t yet fully understand the implications of a dragon’s Eldunarí, and learns more about their applications as power sources and mind slaves from Durza

2. The whole experience was traumatic enough, the battle to survive exhausted him enough, and seeing Jarnünvosk die in his arms messed him up enough that his dragon’s physical death at least briefly broke whatever it is that lets him sense her soul alongside his own

With that last point in particular, I could go so far as to say that if he does vaguely sense Jarnünvosk’s psychic survival, but doesn’t understand what it means and can’t find her Eldunarí when he goes looking for it, it would certainly exacerbate his grief and madness—he literally cannot move on, even believing and “knowing” she’s completely gone, because some part of him knows she isn’t and cannot reconcile with the certainty of her loss.

It puts him asking for another dragon in a particularly grim light as well, that he not only wants to fill in the hole that Jarnünvosk left behind, but he wants to either smother the piece of her that’s still there or he believes that its very existence is driving him to get another dragon.

And when he doesn’t receive one, he takes one; and when that doesn’t satisfy whatever broken amalgamation of grief and hope residing in his heart, he takes it out on the Riders, the dragons, and the rest of the world; and from there goes on to controlling his new empire down to the minutiae.

I have a dilemma. Do you think Galbatorix, if he could, would choose between resurrecting Jarnünvosk and losing his power (political and of the Eldunarya) or remaining the mega-mighty king and leaving his first dragon in the world of the dead?

I seriously cannot answer.
