HELICOPTER PARENTING AND ITS NEGATIVE EFFECTS.
MEANING:
'Helicopter parent' is another way of describing an overprotective parent. This is a parent who at all times, pays extremely close attention to the child's or children's experiences, problems and activities, including at school. Helicopter parents are so named because, they, like helicopters, "hover overhead", overseeing every aspect of their child's life constantly.
In Helicopter parenting, parents are over-involved in their child's life, many times as a way to protect their child. This style can result in the child lacking independence, having poor decision-making and coping skills, etc.
Ironically, such parents think that they are showing love and care to the child, but they do not understand how much they are diminishing that child through helicopter parenting.
HOW SOME PARENTS HELICOPTER-PARENT THEIR CHILDREN.
1. They don't allow them to make friends outside the parents' circle.
2. They issue orders to the children and don't allow them have an opinion or point of view.
3. They don't allow them to join children's and youth groups in the church. They shepherd them to the church and back home till the next worship day.
4. They insist that they must follow the main road, instead of allowing them explore other alternative routes including 'apiam' ways. They don't remember that sometimes the 'apiam way' could be a quick escape route from danger which only saves those that know it.
5. In school, they put them under special guardians who are expected to oversee their activities and report to the parent.
6. To ensure they don't have any private time, they place the child under "lesson teachers" after school.
7. They don't allow them go on their own with their mates to register exams like JAMB, etc.
8. They insist on taking them to school and bringing them back home everyday.
9. They insist on shepherding them to external exam centers like JAMB exams, post-UTME exams etc.
10. When the children go out, they are always calling them on phone, trying to trail their whereabouts and screaming orders at them.
11. They refuse to allow them participate in neighborhood environmental sanitation exercises.
12. They don't allow them shop for their own books, clothes and provisions even when they are of reasonable age.
13. They don't allow them go to the bank and pay their own school fees even when they are of reasonable age.
14. Insisting on choosing careers for them.
15. Insisting on choosing spouses for them.
PRESENT AND FUTURE EFFECTS OF HELICOPTER PARENTING.
1. Self doubt/lack of confidence. The child finds it difficult to believe that he can make a good decision or take an action without involving the parents.
2. Inability to take reasonable risks. They grow up to become timid adults who are always unsure of what choices to make or what risks to take.
3. Depression. They often feel hopeless and insecure around others in the absence of parents.
4. Devastation in the event of sudden death of parents. At this moment, they don't know where to begin anything because they have never been Independent in life.
5. Anxiety and vulnerability. They panic at the slightest challenging situation and may fall victims of opportunists who pose as "good Samaritans".
6. Low self-esteem. They always think that others are better than them since they can see those others getting things done without being directed by their parents.
7. Difficulty in associating with others.
8. Trust issues. They don't trust other people outside their parents circles and this often hinders their social interaction.
9. They have little or no knowledge of the towns or neighborhood they live in beyond their family house and school premises even when they are grown-up.
10. They grow up as loners, having no friends, not even childhood friends, because they were not allowed to bond properly and build trust with their mates during childhood.
It is important that parents allow their children enjoy some measure of personal relevance and personal responsibility from early in life. Show them that you trust their capacity to do the right thing. Discuss their activities with them and consider their views.
If you do place your child under guardians in the school, you may end up producing a timid and insecure child. That child will not be able to live his or her full life in school, knowing that someone is monitoring them, will report to the parents and may add some half truths to the report in order to make it sweeter. It is enough you advise your child to obey the rules and regulations of the school and allow them interact and compete with their mates. This way, the child's self confidence will be intact.
As children grow, they need some level of trust and validation from their parents. If the parents only invalidate every choice the child makes and impose their own choice on the child, it shows that they do not trust that the growing child is capable of solving any problems. This emotionally diminishes the child and erases their sense of self-worth and independence instead of building them.
Dear parents, reconsider your styles, and if you discover that you have been involved in helicopter parenting, try to adjust and balance it up for the good of your children.
