She was absolutely right -- but he didn’t realize it until she said it, that the loud thumping in his ears belonged to his pulse. His breathing came faster with the upped speed of his heart, that adrenaline edge that had awoken the beast within. He was starting to feel it, and had finally learned to tell that sort of thing, when it was coming on, when he could feel control slipping from his fingertips. There was an itch up his spin, like skin split open that was trying to heal, creating that burning desire to sink his nails into the open wound and dig until the wolf was set free. But he had to fight it, fight for his humanity, to keep it all locked up and the rest of the world safe from him.

Dull nails bit into his knees, gripping through dark denim as he clung to the moment. He focused on the sound of her voice as he continued to wrestle it. Nails had started to grow, lengthen and sharpen into claws, and he held tighter to himself, feeling the sting as skin was pierced through his pants. Shallow breaths, he tried to deepen them again, relax, calm down as she said. But he could feel his back splitting open, shoulders widening as bones and muscles contorted, stronger than his own willpower. 

“I can’t --” he said, voice strangled as his face twisted, teeth gritted and features tight and tense. It all started to slip away, and like a snap of a rubber band, he felt the last bit of resistance give out. Soaring upwards in full wolf form, he let out a great howl, clothing tearing and fangs bared for all of Brooklyn to see.
