Hence it happened once, that at Christmas time a certain great lord brought before him a dance or show of young ladies with bared bosoms who were to dance in that guise before the king, perhaps to prove him, or to entice his youthful mind. But the king was not blind to it, nor unaware of the devilish wile, and spurned the delusion, and very angrily averted his eyes, turned his back upon them, and went out to his chamber, saying: ‘Fy, fy, for shame, forsothe ye be to blame’. [...] The depiction of this episode fits into a longstanding tradition of the sexual trials and temptation of monastic heroes such as St Benedict and St Bernard of Clairvaux, right down to Henry’s ability to discern that this is devilish in origin, even a delusion. The life of St Benedict contains an almost identical episode in which an evil priest attempts (unsuccessfully) to corrupt the monks. As related by Caxton the priest ‘toke seuen maydens all naked / & sente them in to the gardyn to daunse & to carolle for to meue the monkes to temptacion’. Henry’s virtue allows him to turn his back on a spectacle which a lesser man would not have been able to resist. Moreover, he has the strength to do so simply by averting his eyes, turning away, and leaving, without having to resort to rolling in nettles, or submersing himself up to the neck in freezing water (standard remedies or self-inflicted punishments for lust in monastic hagiography). This hagiographic trope derived from monastic constructions of a manly religious identity, which used martial imagery to establish the superiority of monks (and subsequently clerics) to secular men. Chastity forms a significant element in the representation of other king saints and high status lay male saints too; for example Charles of Blois rarely shared his wife’s bed and Caxton explains that Louis was only persuaded to marry in order to safeguard the kingdom by providing an heir, and therefore implicitly not to satisfy his lust. A king saint’s chastity is therefore partly about purity, and partly about his ‘virilitas’: his strength as a leader. It is telling that contemporary didactic texts belonging to the Mirrors for Princes genre make explicit a point which is largely implied in saints’ lives, namely that the truly masculine man is the one who resists the flesh; the man who gives in renders himself unmanly: ‘. . . bowe not to þe vse of women, ffor swylk a vse ys a properte to swine . . . lychery ys distruccioun of body, shortynge of lyf, corypcioun of virtueȝ trespass of þe lawe, And hit engendrys women maners.’ Such invective, which appears frequently in the Mirrors, was at pains to establish that the sexually dissolute man could not be king, for he was unable to rule himself, let alone anyone else. Thus kingly chastity, in these contexts, was seen as desirable and admirable rather than anomalous and problematic. The implication of Blacman’s account may be that the ‘great lord’ was trying to turn Henry into his own definition of a ‘real man’, but Blacman seeks to show that Henry’s self-mastery is truly manly.

Discharge Petition for H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Record Group 233: Records of the U.S. House of RepresentativesSeries: General Records
This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Philip Jonathan Owens, BJU Class of 1958.
Philip (Phil) Jonathan Owens, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Georgetown, Texas, on July 31, 2024, due to complications from Parkinsonism. He was 86 years old.
Phil is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 56 years, Barbara (Boucher) Owens; his daughters Gwyneth Owens Butera and her husband Robert Butera of Eastham, Massachusetts, and Susannah Owens Rivera and her husband Luis Rivera, Jr. of St. Paul, Minnesota; and four cherished grandchildren: Camille Butera, Chloe Butera, Leo Rivera and Miles Rivera.
Born on August 16, 1937, in Middleborough, Massachusetts, Phil was the third child of Madeleine (Duncklee) Owens and Bernard J. Owens. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Mabel (Owens) Wilson and Wayne Owens.
Phil began his primary education in Halifax, Massachusetts. After his family relocated to Carver, Massachusetts, he completed elementary school there. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1958 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Education with a major in Mathematics from Bob Jones University in 1962 1958.
After receiving a master’s degree in math from Florida State University, he went to work for General Dynamics in San Diego before beginning his career at IBM Research in Yorktown Heights, New York, where he met his wife, Barbara. IBM moved them to Los Gatos, California, where they both continued to work for IBM.
Following a hiatus to earn his PhD in Computer Science from NYU, Phil returned to IBM in New York, eventually relocating to Georgetown, Texas, where he continued his work in the Austin research division until his retirement in 1992. During his years at IBM and at NYU, he worked alongside three Turing Awardees (the computer science equivalent of a Nobel Prize).
After retiring, he began a second career as an adjunct professor of both mathematics and of computer science at Austin Community College, the University of Texas at Austin, St. Edward’s University, and Southwestern University in Georgetown.
Phil’s life was characterized by his dedication and passion for his many pursuits. From being a devoted father and husband to restoring homes and developing hiking trails behind his Georgia mountain cabin, his enthusiasm was evident in everything he did. He was a talented native plant gardener, a faithful member of church choirs and gospel groups, and a skilled handyman who took pride in each project he undertook.
In his later years, Phil and Barbara enjoyed spending time on Cape Cod, where they lived near their daughter Gwyneth in Eastham. He was an active member of the Orleans (MA) UMC choir and the Eastham Senior Center, where he took ukulele lessons and participated in community activities. Phil cherished his family deeply and loved their travels and beach vacations, always finding joy in the time spent together.
In May 2024, Phil traveled with Barbara to Alameda, California, where he delighted in watching his grandsons’ performances and enjoying family activities. His passing came as he fondly reflected on the joy of those moments.
He entered into his heavenly rest surrounded by the comforting sounds of old-time gospel music and the sight of deer in the backyard of his Sun City home. Phil will be remembered for his love, dedication and the countless ways he touched the lives of those around him.
A celebration of Phil’s life will be held at a later date on Cape Cod. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, The Caring Place, The Outer Cape Outreach Council or a charity of your choice.

[ad_1] US President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday nominated Pam Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida, to be the next US attorney general, after his first pick Matt Gaetz, withdrew his candidature. Trump made the announcement via a social media post on Thursday evening, shortly after former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who had been selected by the president-elect for the position last week, withdrew from consideration. Trump stated in a post on his Truth Social platform, “For far too long, the Department of Justice has been used as a weapon against me and other Republicans — that ends now. Pam will restore the DOJ to its core mission of tackling crime and ensuring America’s safety. I’ve known Pam for many years; she is intelligent, strong, and a dedicated AMERICA FIRST fighter who will excel as Attorney General!” pic.twitter.com/TUeI8gUtHc — Donald J. Trump Posts From His Truth Social (@TrumpDailyPosts) November 21, 2024 Gaetz took to X to announce his withdrawl from the post and wrote, “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition.” “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General,” he added. In a post on social media he indicated that he would continue to fight for the country but from a different position. Thank you, Mr. VP-Elect! I look forward to continuing the fight to save our country. Just maybe from a different post https://t.co/v9w9xFYNEE — Matt Gaetz (@mattgaetz) November 21, 2024 Who is Pam Bondi? Pam Bondi has been a close ally of Donald Trump for many years and acted as one of his lawyers during his first impeachment trial. The charges in that trial involved accusations that Trump sought to leverage U.S. military aid to Ukraine in exchange for an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden, who was then a presidential candidate. Pam Bondi practiced law in Florida for over ten years, first serving as a prosecutor in Tampa before becoming the state’s attorney general from 2011 to 2019, making history as the first woman in that role. She built a reputation for being an effective litigator with strong media presence, notably taking legal action against opioid manufacturers. Bondi was involved in several notable legal cases. In 2012, she led an effort to challenge the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) but was unsuccessful. In 2016, she faced backlash for defending Florida’s ban on gay marriage, especially in the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub shooting. She also became part of a legal battle over a St. Bernard dog, Master Tank, which was claimed by a Louisiana family after Hurricane Katrina; the case was resolved before trial, and the dog was returned. After leaving public office, Bondi joined Ballard Partners, a lobbying firm with connections to Donald Trump, and represented Qatar between 2019 and 2020, as per federal filings. A vocal Trump ally, she played a crucial role in his defense during his first impeachment trial. Currently, Bondi leads the legal division at the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank focused on promoting Trump’s agenda. (With inputs from agencies) [ad_2] Source link
