I love the way Areces inflects certain words for a humorous tone or emphasis when doing the dialogue. But I have to say, he reads pretty fast in this episode. So fast sometimes some shorter words get lost mostly.
“How fast does it go? How high can it go at its top speed? What about drop speed? Does it stop on a raindrop? I heard it could stop on a rain drop. What about warranty? I would have to be able to test fly it first. You don’t expect me to buy a broom without test flying it first.”
You have to love the wizard. Just that barage of questions at once!! Poor Jesse haha. He's also do giddy and childish, full of wonder because of the broom.
Expect a full recount of the episode tonight btw.

Unique path leads to same sisterhood
This article was originally published in the Spring 2018 issue of Themis magazine
Tumblr media
By Heather Matthews Kirk, Contributing Writer (@lsuzetataualpha)
The vast majority of Zetas follow a similar path to sisterhood. In college, they find their home in Zeta Tau Alpha through recruitment efforts. They enjoy Bid Day, followed by New Member Experience lessons and Initiation. Some live in a ZTA house. Many take on leadership roles. All find friendship. And upon graduation, they join the alumnae world, where sisters will support them as they start careers and/or raise families.
Yet, for a handful of women each year, alumnae sisterhood is the starting point for their ZTA journeys.
Alumnae Initiates are “outstanding women…who would bring pride to the membership” and are recommended by alumnae to join ZTA more than four years after they have left college. They have the qualities and strong characteristics we seek in new members, and as alumnae, are sought out because of their capacity to dedicate to ZTA, give back to the community or advise a nearby collegiate chapter. National Council must unanimously approve all recommendations for Alumnae Initiates submitted by alumnae members.
For Kenna Cornelius Rummel, joining ZTA has provided friendship and connection in a new place. In 2015, she moved to Columbia, Missouri—far from her home in Texas—and began advising student organizations at University of Missouri. She met ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation President Julia Marthaler Hill at an Alabama/Mizzou tailgate, and Mrs. Hill connected her with Shannon Ferguson, ZTA’s current Vice President Collegiate III, who also works at Mizzou.
“As an adult, it’s harder to make friends,” Kenna said. “In college, friends are built in, but later in life, you really have to put yourself out there. Once I met Shannon, I knew I could survive in a new place. She helped Mizzou feel like home for me.”
Tumblr media
Pictured: Kenna (left) and Shannon (right) pose for a photo during @mizzouzetataualpha‘s Bid Day.
Ms. Ferguson saw a uniqueness in her friendship with Kenna, too. “She is amazing, and I don’t say that just because she’s one of my best friends,” she said. “She embodies all that is good within higher education and is dedicated to student success.”
In 2017, Ms. Ferguson submitted a recommendation to National Council for Kenna to become an Alumna Initiate, with the hope Kenna could also serve on Alpha Psi Chapter’s advisory board. Upon approval, she invited her to join ZTA. For Kenna, it was an easy decision.
Kenna went to a small private college that did not have National Panhellenic Conference sororities. She wasn’t yet aware of the “broader Greek experience.” “In graduate school, many of my friends and colleagues were in fraternities and sororities,” she said. “It was so cool to see what the organizations provided on the national level. No matter where my friends went, they had someone to connect with. They served a similar purpose, and I wanted to be a part of that.”
Kenna was initiated into Alpha Psi Chapter at University of Missouri in October 2017, alongside the chapter’s 74 new members and with Ms. Ferguson serving as her conductor.
“It was really fun because Shannon and I had shared this friendship, so it was cool for her to go through Initiation beside me,” she said. “And to be there with all the new members—I felt like an older sister to them.”
Jumping right in, Kenna became the chapter’s Financial Advisor, and she loves it when the Treasurer or other officers stop by her office on campus for help.
“This experience has developed me personally and professionally. I get to connect with students on a different level than in my job,” she said. “I have spent time with so many people as a part of this experience, from students to advisors to housing corporation volunteers. It is humbling to see so many people invested in this idea.”
For Dr. Rachelle J. Douglass, her welcome to ZTA sisterhood happened on a grand scale. She was the Convention Initiate in 2014 and went through the service in front of almost 900 Zetas of all ages.
“That was an interesting day,” she said with a laugh. “It was nerveracking not really knowing what was going to happen, and I had to give a speech in front of so many people.”
Despite joining as an alumna, Rachelle has known about ZTA much of her life. Her aunt, Nona Douglass Richey, is a longtime ZTA National Officer who often brought Rachelle to gatherings with her sisters. Over time, she developed a close relationship with then-Executive Director Deb Ensor. Nominated by several of Deb and Nona’s friends, Rachelle was initiated at Convention, just weeks before Deb passed away from cancer.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Rachelle (left)  enjoys sharing ZTA with former National Ritual Chairman Verna Hicks Patton (center) and her aunt, longtime ZTA National Officer Nona Douglass Richey (right).
“The joke was that she was my other mother,” Rachelle said. “She was my cheerleader, and we had a fun relationship. I always heard Nona and Deb talk about [ZTA], and I wanted to share in the sisterhood they had.”
An emergency room doctor, Rachelle’s ZTA connections provide her with a breath of fresh air outside of her busy role. She is active in the Long Beach, CA Alumnae Chapter and often travels—from Seattle to Austin to New Orleans—with sisters or to see those she’s met at ZTA gatherings.
“Any time I spend with my sisters is fun,” she said. “When I moved to California, I knew three people. I have gotten to know a new group through ZTA and some have even made me part of their families.”
Amanda Koerth Areces recommended her best friend Molly Sollie become an Alumna Initiate because of what she saw in her character.
“She is a role model of mine. She sees beauty, looks for the good in everyone, finds satisfaction in being and is humble in success without bitterness in defeat,” Amanda said. “She is a Zeta Tau Alpha if I ever met one—she just needed the pin.
“With Molly not being a Zeta, it felt like something was missing—an acknowledgment of the bond we share, the person she represents and the commitment we have to each other,” she said. “The closest, most important women in my life are my sisters, and I wanted her to be a part of that.”
Amanda also felt Molly had much to give the organization, and National Council agreed. Molly was initiated into Lambda Epsilon Chapter at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis in 2014. The collegiate officers conducted the service at International Office among a group of Molly’s ZTA friends. It was “an unforgettable experience,” she said.
“At first, I knew far more about the people representing Zeta Tau Alpha than I did about the organization itself,” Molly said. “Yet, that was what mattered the most. Everyone I met had a love for each other, their communities and their organization. Because of that, I knew membership was the right choice.”
Tumblr media
Pictured: Molly (center) was excited to join her two best friends, Amanda (left) and Heather (right), in sisterhood.
Molly has given back to the organization through jointly funding a ZTA Foundation Scholarship with her two best friends, aptly named The Three Best Friends That Anyone’s Ever Had Scholarship.
“I don’t know how to describe what changes after years of friendship, but ZTA takes it a step further,” she said. “The scholarship is a way to celebrate that, to say ‘thank you’ and to support collegiate women.”
For all three—Kenna, Rachelle and Molly—Alumnae Initiation has brought new friendships into their lives and strengthened old ones through a recognition of shared values.
“At the end of the day—and this is what many collegiate women don’t understand just yet—even if we’ve had different ZTA experiences, we are all here for the same purpose and to love one another,” Kenna said. “That’s truly what the value of sisterhood is.”

#### Referencias bibliográficas: * Fuentes, L. y García-Sevilla, J. Interview for a Wizard liveblog - Episode 4: “Chapter 3″
Enjoy some delicious foods, genuinely scary mental images, magic and domestic issues at the cofee shop
Episode 4: Chapter 3
General plot summary + notes
Jesse spends the rest of that Monday taking internet orders, packaging and receiving boxes, and is so busy that he doesn’t even find time to go see Cindy at the Deli. Customers are coming in all through the afternoon looking  for pieces to complete their Halloween costumes. Mount Dora’s annual Halloween Festival was to be on Saturday night, and this created much excitement in the town, which meant more traffic in the store than usual. Only at 5 pm Jesse remembers the wizard. At that point the UPS man arrives for his last round of picking up and dropping off boxes. Jesse looks across the street and sees that “the wizard” is not there. Usually the UPS man doesn’t speak to Jesse besides the typical “Hi”, or “See you later” and “Have a nice day”, but this time, as Jesse attempts to lift one of the large two boxes which read “Fragile.”, stopping Jesse because he fears he might break its contents. Jesse looks closer at the box, finding it read “Fragile. Contains glass. Handle with care.” He casually backs up and allows the UPS man to carry it to the office door. Jesse picks up a few smaller boxes himself. On the way up the stairs, the UPS man suddenly tells Jesse the history of the old house that Alivan’s is located in: He says that an old, crazy man once left there, who was said to be downright mean, and who was found guilty of murdering six people, over six months and always on the same day, and that he’d done it to them while they were waiting at the bus stop outside the store. Which was why the bus stop was moved down in front of the First National Bank later on. It even took the cops three years to catch him. The house had been in his family for several generations before then.
The UPS man told him that they had all been scared to death. Jesse slowly begins to find the house creepy. As soon as the UPS man left, he locked up quite fast and went home on his motorcycle. He could not wait to get back to his apartment. Once there, after dinner he called home to his family to have a very nice, very long conversation in order to calm his nerves.
During the night Jesse barely got any sleep, tossing and turning and having nightmares of six people lying dead, scared to death, on the sidewalk in front of Alivan’s.
Tuesday morning Jesse drives on his motorcycle to the Deli to see if Cindy is there yet. She’s not at work yet, with it being quite early, and he expected this but figured he’d try his luck anyway, if only he could get a few minutes with her. He then goes back, meeting the stranger at the coffee shop for breakfast. The man has already ordered breakfast for him. Jesse sits with him. The “wizard” is wearing his robe and hat, and his staff is leaning against the table. He is sipping on hot, dark coffee. He senses that Jesse has had a bad night and asks him about it. Jesse tells him he has had nightmares.
Jesse’s breakfast arrives and there’s a lot of it: scrambled eggs, hash brown potatoes, bacon, sausage, buttered toast, pancakes and a large glass of milk. The heavy-set waitress that brought the food tells Jesse that he hopes he’s hungry. And he says that he is.
The “wizard” says once more that he has to test-fly the Stealth broom before he can buy it. Jesse rolls his eyes, then asks him what his name is. The man says “Ch-U-Ch”. (DEFINITE CONFIRMATION! Ch-U-Ch is back!) Jesse doesn’t hear it right at first, thinking it’s “Chuch” or “Chooch” I believe. Ch-U-Ch corrects him. The waitress comes by and refills the wizard’s mug. Then the wizard gets comfortable in his chair and tells Jesse that he really is a wizard. This begins the process referred to by the Wizardry as “an interview”, in which the wizard usually has to show some kind of proof, through an act of magic. Jesse asks him to prove it, and so Ch-U-Ch grabs the blue stone around his neck and is able to fully recount Jesse’s horrible nightmare. Jesse comments that it seems like a trick he’s seen on TV, so Ch-U-Ch twitches the index finger on the hand he grabbed the stone with, causing the large glass of milk (now empty) to slide over to him across the table, into his hand, and as soon ashee lets go of it, he slides back. Ch-U-Ch, who’s 45 years old, is going through a mid-life crisis, and thinks that acquiring the Stealth might help him relive his youth and cope with it. He also tells Jesse that his wife is a “Folk”, meaning a non-magic person, and that he has two sons, Andrew and Brendan, 16 and 14 years old, but they haven’t shown any signs of magic. Furthermore, they don’t show any interest in magic. They don’t even want to dress up for Halloween! He says this with some hint of sadness, reminding Jesse of when his father tells him that he’s disappointed that Jesse hasn’t gone to college and doesn’t seem to be interested in his family’s tradition of attorneys. It’s as if Ch-U-Ch is both disappointed in his kids, but also want them to accept the part of him that makes him who he is. Ch-U-Ch notes that maybe his sons are just late-bloomers, or they’re just regular Folk, but his own cousin, Ana, who’s a witch and works at “the Identification and Records Department in New York City”, hasn’t found a single trace of magic in them, and so they never got a letter for magic school. His salary doesn’t cover proper magic schools, but the high school his boys go to, the same one he went to, has a secret magic department. Some of the teachers at the school teach regular sciences, reading, and math courses to the Folks, and magic in secret, usually with the classes being held every day in different janitor rooms.
Jesse then asks Ch-U-Ch whether there’s “any real villain wizards”. Ch-U-Ch suddenly gets very, very serious. He reveals to Jesse that he’s in fact a detective, or more precisely an undercover agent of the wizard world, and that he’s chasing an escaped convict, who’s a mad and demented evil wizard who’s killed before and will kill again. Jesse doubts him, so Ch-U-Ch grabs his blue amulet again and performs another magic act to reassure Jesse - a sharp, yellow light shoots through his fingers, and quickly vanishes. The waitress catches it out of the corner of her eye, thinking it is a car, but sees no one driving.
Ch-U-Ch tells Jesse that he’s been killing six people every six months, and that at the end of October someone is most likely going to die. He also tells Jesse that his leads point towards Alivan’s Wizards and Witches Corner Store. Jesse wonders what it’s got to do with him, and then Ch-U-Ch pulls out a roll of papers from his robes and shows them to Jesse. They’re copies of legal documents dating back to May, shortly after Jesse’s hiring date. There are ownership papers, corporation papers, they show a conveyance bank loan to Jesse, insurance policies with his name on them, and everything is notarized and carrying Jesse’s actual signature, showing that he is the true owner of Alivan’s Wizards and Witches Corner Store. Jesse reacts rather badly, saying “What the hell is this?” Ch-U-Ch asks again why he is the owner of the store, and Jesse, rather loudly and in public, shouts that he isn’t. The waitress is alerted and comes over and asks if everything is alright. Ch-U-Ch holds his mug out for a refill and winks to her to show everything is fine. The look on her face shows that she’s thinking “Teenagers…”
Ch-U-Ch tells Jesse that he is the owner, whether he’d like it or not, and that he’s been the owner since May, six months ago. Jesse then proclaims that all this and Ch-U-Ch is crazy, and gestures to leave. But Ch-U-Ch grabs his staff and waves it, causing Jesse to stick to the chair and the chair to stick to the floor. He pleads with Jesse again for help. He is desperate, as the criminal wizard he’s after has had all his records magically destroyed by someone from the inside working with him, and that he’s slowly eliminated anyone outside of his personal circle who can recognize him - so even he has never seen him before. Jesse says that he doesn’t know who he is talking about either, but then Ch-U-Ch reveals the truth: The escaped convict is Jesse’s “boss”, the man “Mr. Claw.” Ch-u-Ch then says that before his main lead, “Nicholas”, died, he told him that the man he’s after is at Alivan’s, but instead Ch-U-Ch found Jesse. Jesse asks whether this Nicholas’ last name is “Fidgewidge”, and Ch-U-Ch says that it is. Then, finally, Jesse realizes that all of this is real. This is of course the same Nicholas that we saw Ch-U-Ch fighting in the prologue, in the small New England house while the Folk, Dougie Mann, watched helpless.
Charater introductions
The waitress at the coffee shop next to Alivan’s Wizards and Witches Corner Store. She’s heavy-set. She also has quite a scratchy but somewhat high voice, with Areces as the narrator.
First mention of Ana, Ch-U-Ch’s cousin, who is a witch and works at the Identification and Records Department in New York City - whatever that is.
We’re also told a bit about Ch-U-Ch’s wife, who’s a Folk (non-magic person), and doesn’t really approve of magic things. She knows he’s a wizard, however.
Ch-U-Ch’s sons, Andrew (16) and Brendan (14) are supposedly Folk, or at least late bloomers in terms of their magic capacity. If any. Ana didn’t find any sign of magic in them, anyway. They also don’t show any interest in magic. They don’t even want to dress up for Halloween. All of this is disappointing and disheartening for the wizard Ch-U-Ch.
Information about already know characters
Ch-U-Ch. Well, we’ve met him before. Now we know for sure that this man outside the store is him, and that he’s a real wizard. And an undercover detective of the Wizardry. Ch-U-Ch seems to rarely remove his hat or cloak, but this time he allowed himself to let go of his staff for the meeting at the coffee shop with Jesse.
Mr Claw, in the sense that we finally understand who he is. The escaped convict and very real wizard that special agent Ch-U-Ch is after.
Events
The UPS man comes around Alivan’s, with a box containing fragile glass contents. He insists on carrying it for Jesse because of this, afraid that Jesse might break the contents. This is coincidentally the first time he’s said anything to the young man besides the actual “hi” and “see you later” and such. On the way up the stairs to Mr. Claw’s office he tells Jesse of the dark history of the house that contains Alivan’s. It was the house of a murderer, a crazy man who would kill people, just outside the store. Through literal fear. Jesse practically runs home scared. There is still a few places in the audiobook where I thought certain words could'ce come a bit faster, or slower, or emphasis could've been on another word or entire sentence, but no major grievances to spot!
The next morning Jesse meets the wizard, who turns out to be a real wizard named Ch-U-Ch, who’s after an escaped convict, and we learn of his family. We learn that the escaped convict is a wizard too, and that Jesse’s boss, Mr. Claw, is the man he’s after. Jesse finally realizes it’s all true once Ch-U-Ch tells him that his main lead, which pointed towards Alivan’s, was the man named Nicholas Fidgewidge, who’s also stated to be dead. This is 99% likely to be the same Nicholas Ch-U-Ch fought during the prologue.
Emotions, thoughts and critiques
Very good narration and reading speed in this episode. I once read that Areces' own lesser command of the English language, what with it being his second language after Spanish, drives him crazy, but that he was trying to fix it gradually while recording the episodes. It's starting to pay off already, even if it's not the best way to go about it.
Quite a spooky and dark turn of events. When the UPS man told of the murders that had happened at the store, I wasn’t too faced, but it was quite creepy. It was once we heard of Jesse’s nightmares, with dead people on freaking side walks, that I began sweating a tiny bit. Also great to see further characterization for Jesse as he hurries home, frightened, and calls home to have a very nice, very long conversation with his family after dinner, to get his mind off the scary story the UPS man told him. It was made especially frightening when the wizard, who’s revealed to be a genuine wizard and none other than Ch-U-Ch seen in the prologue, uses his magic to learn of the exact events of the dream, and recounts them perfectly. The people were scared to death, clutching their chests, six of them lying dead outside of Alivan’s. On the sidewalk. Quite disturbing. I love it!
Also pretty great to see some strain and conflict, both between Jesse and Ch-U-Ch and just in general. Jesse is very bothered by the fact that things are not as they seemed to him. He is the owner. The wizard is a real wizard, who can fly brooms and do even more. His own boss is an escaped murderer and a wizard as well, who will kill soon. He even denies it at first, until Ch-U-Ch finally convinces him by using a name that Jesse knows quite well: Nicholas Fidgewidge. He lets Jesse know in the chapter that he’s dead, but that he’s his main lead to Mr. Claw. Nicholas was the same ugly wizard that Ch-U-Ch fought during the prologue.
Also, as is typical with food scenes and food descriptions in writing for me - and also when it’s featured on TV or in the movies - the breakfast scene made me feel quite hungry. Didn’t help that the serving and number of foods were so many! It sounded absolutely delicious!
It’s great to learn about Ch-U-Ch’s family. His non-witch wife, his sons who seemingly aren’t wizards like himself, his cousin Ana who’s a witch. His sons’ school which has a secret magic class department. It’s also great to see some rather profound character growth for Jesse. He sees and hears the disappointment in Ch-U-Ch over his sons not having shown magic, and wonders if he did something wrong - there’s been a wizard or witch in at least every single one of  the generations of his family after all - and Jesse sees that it is in a way a mirror of his own father’s hopes for Jesse and his disappointment at him not living up to them. Jesse didn’t go to college. Jesse isn’t interested in becoming an attorney as is the tradition in Jesse’s family.
That is all I can think of at the moment!

Interview for a Wizard liveblog - Episode 3: “Chapter 2″
So, here it is, my thoughts on Episode 3 - Chapter 3, of Interview for a Wizard (book 1 of The Salem Concord). Please excuse the excruciatingly long plot summary!!
Episode 3 - "Chapter 2"
General plot summary + notes
At first Jesse doesn’t pay much attention to the wizard standing outside, across the street from the store. He simply plays it off as a weirdo dressed up a few days before Halloween. Instead, he prefers to watch anyone else. However, he does glance over to him again and realizes his hat isn’t from his store. He looks at him again when a boy runs by knocking on the window and waving to him. He notices the wizard’s hat has a wide brim that falls down over the front of his face and the back of his head, and the point of it flops to one side, and he thinks to himself that it looks cool and wonders where he bought it. He does a search on Yahoo online but can’t find anything he doesn’t know of already with his chosen keywords. Another order comes in through the website and he goes back to work.
An hour has passed when Jesse looks up again, as a young girl and her mother comes into the store to buy a novice broom. This marks the first time we hear, even with sound effects, the jingle of a small round bell hanging from the handle of the front door. Jesse helps them and after a few minutes the girl skips out of the store with her broom wrapped in dark purple paper and with a large red bow tied to it. Jesse sees that the weird wizard-looking stranger is still watching him from across the street. However this time, as Jesse stands still facing him, it seems to Jesse that the man drops his head slightly in a gesture of salutation (a slight nod that is). Then a new order announces itself and Jesse is forced to go back to work.
At 5:00 pm UPS arrives and Jesse helps the UPS man with the boxes that he has already packed and put next to the door for pick-up. He also takes the new boxes from the UPS man and puts them upstairs in front of Mr. Claw’s office door. A large sign hangs on the door reading “KEEP OUT”, and Jesse obeys this gladly. He doesn’t even care to wonder what’s inside. Then the UPS man leaves and Jesse decides it’s time to go home. He turns the OPEN sign at the door around to read CLOSED, but when another order announces itself Jesse begrudgingly gets back to work. Before doing so he throws his head back, however, sighing, and we hear that his hair is long and his forehead pale. Another hour passes (so it’s 6:00 pm now) before Jesse turns off the computer and starts preparing to leave: he places the new items for tomorrow’s pick-up next to the front door, pulls down the blinds, turns off the light except for the one at the display window and the porch, goes outside and locks up. He notices the stranger is still standing across the street. At first he doesn’t know what to do but then decides to just ignore him and walk away, however first he checks his phone for voice messages and finds one. He stops at the porch, listens to it, and finds that it is a wrong number. He faces the stranger again, who nods at him, and abruptly Jesse changes his mind and goes over to the man. Immediately the man says “Hi Jesse” and Jesse greets him in return, but wonders if he knows the man since he used his first name. Jesse can’t make out most of his face with the hat hiding it - it reminds him of a gangster movie where the villains wear hats to seem tough. He has a moustache and a trimmed salt and pepper goatee. The man tells Jesse that he wants to buy a broom. He is tall, deep-voiced and built, his robe falls down to his calves, he wears a grey long-sleeve shirt underneath it and dark pants, and around his neck hangs a blue stone from a dark leather knotted behind his neck. Jesse tells him the store is closed. The man asks him if he owns the store, his voice tense, and Jesse tells him that he just works there. Jesse comments that a broom would look great with the man’s wizard’s outfit. He also comments that Alivan’s doesn’t sell any of the items he has and marvels at them all, especially the man’s staff. We’re told it’s long and made of hard, light wood, and most of it covered in leather straps and carved designs. Jesse tells the stranger that he can come back to look at the broom, and the man agrees and leaves. Jesse, thinking the encounter weird, also leaves.
We jump to Monday morning. Jesse drives his motorcycle up to the Deli in Mount Dora. It’s a tradition for him to go there every morning, and lunch-break in the afternoon, to see the waitress Cindy who works there, whom he has a crush on. He orders the usual - a tall non-fat latté, and chats with her. He tells her Alivan’s is more busy than usual but that nothing special’s going on. He asks her if she’s planning to go to Mount Dora’s Halloween Festival, and she says yes. He quickly takes a sip from the latté but burns his lip, spilling hot coffee on his jeans. She hands him a napkin and tells him yes, as she loves dressing up. Jesse tells her that he’s not very into Halloween but was wanting to go himself. He wants to ask her to the festival but misses the opportunity as a young couple comes in to order, and then three elederly women after them, and he realizes that Cindy won’t have time. He pays for the latté, waves to Cindy who waves back with a smile, and he takes the cup with him on his motorcycle. Jesse tells himself that Cindy likes him too and reminds himself to go back to ask her to the festival. He is a bit upset with himself for not asking her while he was there. He thinks to himself that she looks beautiful this morning, and then goes to Alivan’s.
Jesse gets to Alivan’s Wizards and Witches Corner Store at 9:00 am on his motorcycle. He opens the store and turns the sign to read “OPEN”. He then notices the stranger is standing across the street. The boxes at the top of the steps are gone and a few new hats hang on the wall. A new novice broom hands where the one he sold the girl the day prior hung then. Jesse boots up his computer, then looks at the stranger outside again. He wonders why he doesn’t come in when the orders start coming in. Midway through the morning he looks out at him again, and finally fed up he gets up and outside. He waves for him to come in, but he simply waves back. Then he goes over and asks him why he’s not coming in. The stranger asks Jesse if he’s inviting him inside and Jesse says yes, and “Mi casa, su cassa.”
Inside the store, the stranger takes off his hat. He has short black hair with grey highlights that run up his sideburns and around his ears. His eyes are dark and twinkle as he looks around the store, and his eyebrows are dark and bushy. He smiles at the sight of the broom wall. He approaches it and looks at them. It’s a large collection, ranging from novice to experienced. The man says that his first broom was a novice broom like one of the brooms on the wall, but that he “ate it bad” by flying it right into the side of an 18-wheeler. There’s a slightly childish tone to what he’s saying. Jesse comments that he plays the role well, confusing the man. Jesse is suddenly hailed by his boss, Mr. Claw, on instant messaging on his computer. This surprises Jesse since it’s the first time he’s reached out to him outside of email. He tells Jesse that he’s getting a bonus on his next paycheck for increasing sales during October, exciting Jesse, and that he’s expecting a package from “Lord Alex Distribution Inc.” and that he’d like an email from Jesse when it arrives. Jesse asks him what he thought of his idea of a Halloween costume contest, and Mr. Claw likes it, but thinks this year isn’t the time for it, what with the Halloween festival already going on and lots of things happening. Mr. Claw then signs off. As Claw first writes to Jesse, there’s a short funny exchange between Jesse and the stranger as he first thinks it’s his girlfriend, to which Jesse responds “Nooooo”, slightly childishly and humorously, “my boss.” The man asks if he’s the owner and Jesse says no. Jesse tells him he’s been working there for six months. He hasn’t had his six month review yet, though, but his boss likes him. The man asks what the boss’s name is, but Jesse doesn’t wanna answer this.
On request, Jesse shows him the fastest and latest model, “the Stealth”, which is also the “fastest one out there yet” according to Jesse, and “straight out of Harry Potter.” The stranger finds it beautiful. It’s a racing broom. slick, made of dark, strong but light wood, hand-carved for aerodynamics. The grip is curved for better control and its corn stalk is sleek and layered with brass brackets allowing less wind resistance than earlier models. It’s described as being “indeed the Porsche of flying brooms.” The stranger asks if he can test fly it, and Jesse says no.
The man says, rather quickly and with the manner of a child:
“How fast does it go? How high can it go at its top speed? What about drop speed? Does it stop on a raindrop? I heard it could stop on a rain drop. What about warranty? I would have to be able to test fly it. You don’t expect me to buy a broom without test flying it first. Have you flown it yet?”
To Jesse, it seems like the man is acting like a little child, or is crazy. He says no to the last question and tells him that it’s just a prop, right out of a movie. The man asks “You’re not a wizard?” Jesse says “Nooooo.” He asks again if he’s not the owner, and again a no. The man gets lost in thought, asking, mostly to himself: “Then why are you here?” Another order comes in and Jesse starts working. He tells the man that they also sell wands, if he’s interested. The man looks up the stairs and asks whose office is at the top, and Jesse says “Mr. Claw.” Jesse becomes upset with himself for letting his boss’s name slip, when it’s the one thing Mr. Claw instructed him not to do - he’s very wealthy and private and doesn’t want hecklers and beggars to bother him. The stranger asks if the mail comes in “Claw’s” name, and Jesse says no. He finds the question very unusual. The stranger watches the door, seeming pensieve, then says that he still want to buy the broom but would need to test-fly it first. He has to leave then, but asks Jesse to get together with him the next morning, 8:30 am, at the coffee shop next door for breakfast, but tells Jesse that in order to enter the store he has to be invited in, as there is an “Emunio Concutio” protecting the place from wizards like him. He also says that he doesn’t need a wand because he’s old-school and prefers a staff.
As soon as the stranger’s left, a new order from Yolanda Roundbottom announces itself. Jesse suddenly realizes that he hasn’t heard from Nicholas Fidgewidge for some time.
Character introductions
Cindy from the Deli. She works at the Deli in Mount Dora, selling sandwiches and coffee. She is about Jesse’s age (17), is very pretty, always wears her blond hair in a ponytail, has blue eyes. She seems to have an eye for Jesse, who definitely has an eye for her. She also loves Halloween and dressing up and is planning on going to the annual Mount Dora Halloween Festival.
No one in particular. We also have miscellaneous people come into the store - children and their parents - and one kid knocking on the window as he runs by.
New information about already known characters
The stranger across the stret by the way, is said to wear a dark cloak or robe that goes down to his calves. He is also rather tall and has a deep voice, is well-built, has very short dark hair with grey highlights that run up his sideburns and around his ears, and dark eyes that twinkled when he watched the inside of Alivan’s - under dark, bushy eyebrows. He wears a grey long-sleeve shirt under the cloak and dark pants, and he has a blue stone hanging around his neck from a dark leather string knotted behind his neck. His pointy hat has a wide brim that flaps down over his face, and down over the back of his head, hiding most of it. He does remove it inside the store, however. The wizard also acts very giddy when he’s talking about his “memories” of flying brooms.
We also learn that Jesse has brown, long, straight hair, and a pale forehead.
Events
Jesse comes back to Alivan’s and works. He sees the stranger acros the street again. Midway through the morning he goes to get him, inviting him in. The man is giddy and childlike in his wonder at the contents of the store. He seemingly makes up stories about flying on brooms, causing Jesse to think that he plays the role of the wizard very well. Mr. Claw contacts Jesse through instant messaging, telling him of a big bonus for his sales increases, and telling that he’ll be expecting a box from “Lord Alex Distribution Inc.” The stranger quizzes Jesse on every technical detail of the broom he wants to buy - the Stealth, “the fastest and latest” model on the market. Jesse accidentally lets slip the name of his boss to the stranger. Then the man becomes pensieve suddenly, and then leaves, but not before inviting Jesse to breakfast the next morning at 8:30 am, at the coffee shop next door. He also mentions to Jesse that there’s a spell on the store called an Emunio Concutio which keeps him out unless invited. Jesse tells him that he can come back the next day. Then the man leaves.
For the rest of the day Jesse tries not to pay attention to the stranger across the street dressed as a wizard. He’s constantly watching Jesse, and rightfully Jesse finds it odd and probably a bit worrisome. At the end of the day, while going home, he almost decides to ignore the stranger, but decides against it. The stranger tells Jesse that he wants to buy a broom from him. Jesse comments on the stranger’s get-up, praising it as being very cool and awesome-looking.
The next morning, Tuesday, Jesse goes to a sandwich and coffee place called the Deli, to see his crush Cindy and try to invite her to the annual Mount Dora Halloween Festival. He doesn’t get the chance, however. We learn that it’s been a tradition of his to go the Deli and order a tall, non-fat latté every day, just to get to see Cindy.
Emotions and thoughts
It is funny to watch Jesse be bugged by the “wizard” and his multitudes of questions pertaining to the Stealth (the broom). The awkwardly stated sentences are less in this episode as well. The episode doesn’t feel that long, but recounting it took quite a while. Probably because of all the times Jesse watched the “wizard”, or because of all the questions about the broom.
Also nice to meet a new character, and a female one at that. It’s only been a very short exchange, but it seems to me that Jesse and Cindy have a lot of chemistry already. They seem to be able to just gaze at one another for a long time, and she smiles a lot at him. Also neat to hear some more about Jesse’s daily routines in Mount Dora.
I quite like the fact that Jesse was finally given some deeper characterization. He feels regret and upset about accidentally letting his boss’s name slip, especially since it was the one rule he was the most adamant for Jesse to oblige. Mr Claw also shows up once more, in the form of instant messages talking to Jesse. We also learn that Mr. Claw is supposedly very wealthy and a private man who does not want to be bothered by “hecklers and beggars.” Seems like the type you’d want to make friends with, if you could even get a chance to do it… sort of like Mr. Burns-ish.
The “wizard” is being quite curious in this episode/chapter, asking many, many questions about Jesse’s private business. Stepping over the line, I’d say, and Jesse does seem to catch on to this somewhat, but I think it’s part of his youth and naivety that causes him not to get all defensive about it. At the end the wizard is very tense. Maybe we’ll find out why in the next episode… when Jesse and the stranger will supposedly meet for breakfast next door.

The Salem Concord podcast audiobooks liveblog!
Since it’s time for my annual autumn listen to the entirety of my good friend J.A. Areces’ fantasy podcast audiobook series, The Salem Concord, I thought I should liveblog the experience! It’s a spooky series, about secret Wizardry and their law enforcement, about dark sorcery, Halloween, magic, it’s spooky but also quite fun. It’s also about history, such as the Salem Witch Trials and there’s even something on President George Washington in the revised physical edition of the first book, which came out in 2014.
Throughout the series you follow Ch-U-Ch Mahgo, renamed Beifar Mahgo in the revised books, an agent of the Department of Magical Criminal Investigations or DMCI, in his struggle against his long-time foe Lord Alex and the Secret Society of Seven Sorcerers. He gains a close friend and ally in the young Folk man (Folk=non-magic human, think Muggle) who comes to own an actual Wizardry supply store, as well as Ch-U-Ch’s cousin and colleague Ana Mahgo and his sons, Andrew and Brendan Mahgo, and his wife, and many, many more characters. Lots of DMCI agents and agents of other Wizardry law enforcement agencies. Lots of antagonistic organizations as well.
Anyway, the books are as follows:
Interview for a Wizard
The Secret Society of Seven Sorcerers
The Sorcerer’s Secret
The Last Sorcerer
You have to get used to the author’s Spanish-American accent at first, but he gets way better at reading from Book 2 and on! The grammar is also a little weird at times, since they were not edited much at this point, but the atmosphere and descriptions, and the storyline, makes up for it! There is a lot of creativity, a lot of different locations, real and fictional. Enjoy!
P.S. You can get the revised editions of Interview for a Wizard and The Secret Society of Seven Sorcerers right here on Smashwords or on Amazon Kindle.
