RETROSPETIVE III ARGON RECORDS & WAR SERIES Nick Argon

Pour ce troisième numéro, nous allons nous intéresser à Argon Records, un label américain créé par Nick Argon, puis à War Series : pour qui le passé est plus trouble… Argon et son sous-label Xenon trouvent leurs origines à San Francisco en 1990 ; à l’époque ils sortent des vinyles Drum&Bass de manière sporadique jusqu’en 2003. Après une pause de quelques années Nick Argon découvre le dubstep via son frère et un ami d’enfance que l’on connaît sous le nom de Matty G, c’est le début d’une belle aventure pour Argon.

Ce changement de cap brutal s’effectue en 2006, une période où le Dubstep connaît alors son âge d’or en terme de créativité ( premier album de Skream, Anti War Dub de DMZ, Dubstep Warz sur BBC Radio 1, … ), néanmoins les artistes phares de l’époque ( Vex’d, Loefah, Kode9, … ) sont tous anglais et se connaissent tous, c’est donc une vague d’air pur qu’apporte Nick Argon au Dubstep en donnant leur chance à des artistes américains tels que Matty G, Uncle Sam, Babylon System, Noah D, etc qui pour la plupart signent leur première release et apportent avec eux une nouvelle vision du genre remplie d’influences Reggae, Dub, Ambient et Hip-Hop.

La réussite du label tient également au fait que le dubstep commence lentement à arriver aux USA mais que les Dj se font encore attendre ! En effet si à New York les soirées Dub War peuvent se permettre de ramener les plus gros noms de la scène directement d’Angleterre, de l’autre côté du pays les soirées SMOG sont face à un problème de taille : le public est présent mais il n’y a personne à faire jouer.

Matty G et Nick Argon – qui est également un Dj de talent – feront partie de ces artistes à jouer du Dubstep pour la première fois à Los Angeles et promouvant ainsi de la meilleure des manières le label. Après 21 ans d’existence et ses 5 dernières années le faisant rentrer dans l’histoire, Argon finira par s’éteindre sans explications et laissera derrière lui des classiques comme 50,000W / Loefah Remix (et 50Kw VIP) ou Under The Dancing Feet de Clouds & Tiiu.

Intéressons nous maintenant à War Series. La raison ici de parler de ce label mythique vient du fait que si le propriétaire n’a jamais été officiellement dévoilé, de nombreux indices portent à croire qu’il ne serait autre que Nick Argon.

Créé en 2007, War Series avait pour particularité de ne sortir que des remixes Dubstep de grands classiques du Reggae et de la dub, le tout pressé à 500 exemplaires sur des 12″ vierges. Au fil des années les artistes se sont révélés petit à petit et l’on retrouve une participation importante de Matty G, Dj Madd, ainsi que J:Kenzo, Noah D, Dutty Ranks et Roommate. Artistes qui ont tous signés sur Argon Rec ( à l’exception de Dj Madd ).

Si la qualité des releases est parfois discutable (ceux de Matty G sont incontournables), il reste néanmoins le précurseur de nombreux labels actuels comme Lion Charge, Whodem, Ruffcut, Roots’n’Future ou plus récemment la série X de Innamind qui à leur tour se concentrent sur des tracks à mi-chemin entre la dub et le dubstep et qui remettent le vinyl au premier plan.

Arrêté en 2010, War Series laissera 19 sorties derrière lui dont certaines se vendent encore aujourd’hui à prix d’or.

Current favourite music, part 2. I found this from one of J:Kenzo’s radio shows a few weeks ago and must’ve listened to it a couple of hundred times since, really just does something for me on some very base level.

I’ll be walking somewhere or driving and just get the urge to hear this and then it’ll be on repeat for half an hour, but I don’t get bored.
