Translation of the KUNSTEN ER DØD / ART IS DEAD review written by Thor Joachim Haga:
"As an Ivar Aase fan, I always follow his short film projects, from the excellent Bevisburden (2021) to the much talked about trilogy that started with Transactions (2021), continued with the Gullstol winner Complications (2023) and ended with Reservations (2024) - the latter not part of this year's program in Grimstad, but maybe next year?
Art is dead , on the other hand, is a slightly different project from Aase, an experimental satire on art and culture of offence. An apparently dead woman lies on the ground on a park slope – framed as if in some kind of performance stunt; a comment about her power over her own body, even in death. Various actors from the general public – ordinary spectators, family, journalists, law enforcement agencies – observe and comment on the phenomenon in a remarkable way.
The satire or humor aspect itself may not work quite optimally - there is something contrived and self-conscious about dialogue and performances that undermines much of the film's effect (enhanced by a choppy clip rhythm that should make it all weirder, in good Godardian spirit). The effect of the strange always requires a leeway, a contrast to the normal, which reinforces the satire's point.
Aase may have intended that the film's style should reflect the absurdity of the art project, a bit like in Itonje Søimer Guttormsen's discomfort chamber Gritt (2021), but he doesn't quite get there. Then he actually succeeds better in the frame narrative - shot in beautiful black and white - which adds a much-needed heart (or "normal" leeway) to the film. In this contrast, his strength as a filmmaker really comes to the fore."

Women in Film Challenge 2022: [68/52] Gritt, dir. Itonje Søimer Guttormsen (Norway, 2021)
We have to also be mindful of not becoming too navlebeskuende – to become too egocentric about ourselves as creators.

The hermit
Whistles Does the dream have a father? Adam said she was too wild. All my criminal sides light the way for the woods and fields shall rejoice. And when life flings the unexpected at us... To belong in this extremely individualized society ours is turning into... Our own vanity, and what we'd like to leave behind, is connected to the fact that life changes. There is light and darkness, pain and joy. Tenderness... When we have eradicated all biological life as we know it, including ourselves, something else will take over and lust for life. I like to think that life itself is a thinking being. A being spawning concepts as a mechanism for survival. To ensure the continuation of life. And that life itself has a remembrance of the past, and that chaos takes on a shape by recalling the past embodied in us. In our cells. In our habits. Gritt, a film by Itonje Søimer Guttormsen.

Gritt
Continue reading

Gritt. 5/10. The director & writer Itonje Søimer Guttormsen was there, but they weren't able to have a Q&A after. So they interviewed her before. It good that she said it was a satire about the art world, cuz couldn't of told. Not funny at all, not cringy either. Nice to see some action around the idea of Lilith, tho it came of kinda...stupid in the film. (paikassa Maxim) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUK-lY5NtOYtLtBfljypuRm9Q0hqHWJLgK14JE0/?utm_medium=tumblr
