It’s that time of year again! 2023 edition!

This is my seventh year sending holiday cards in the fandom! Help me continue the tradition!

As you may or may not know, my favorite thing in life is sending Christmas cards. Literally. Favorite. Thing. The issue? I have way more cards in my possession than I have people to send them to! Please help me out, I want to send holiday cards to as many of you as you will let me!

Six Sentence Sunday

Greetings, my dearest loves. So...I find myself in a bit of a block right now, where I CAN write, but it feels like I'm walking uphill through quicksand to do it, and I'm convinced that all of it is garbage. So if y'all have any extra special words that might change my mind and maybe pull me from this funk, I would greatly appreciate it.

That being said, I do currently have...about 10? or so different WIPs in varying states of disarray living in my docs from which to choose a Six Sentence Sunday snippet, and this one I actually did write this week, while in the throes of this Writer's Block.

This little piece is from my upcoming song inspired fic, Come Back to Me, which is a gift I've been meaning to give @thinkof-england for literal months now and is almost finished.

everyone involved is in their early 20s and in university.

so basically i matched with this guy on a dating app and after a very brief conversation he asked me out. i felt kinda weird about it bc we had literally just started talking five minutes earlier but i kinda panicked and said yes without thinking. i was rly stressed out about it so i ended up messaging him and basically saying hey, i'm really sorry but i don't think i'm up for going out this week bc i'm realizing that dating apps make me super uncomfortable, i had fun talking to you but this rly isn't for me. he responded politely saying he understood and it was ok. at the time i didn't give him any extra info to contact me elsewhere. the issue is we're in a class together (we both minor in the same subject and it's a core class that we have to take, it's also a pretty small class so we see each other three times a week). after a few days i started thinking differently of it so i explained everything to a friend who said if i did want to keep talking to him i should just give him some other info or talk to him in person, so i redownloaded the app and gave him my instagram username basically just saying hey i didn't say this before but if you do still want to talk to me you can message me on insta instead. that was yesterday and he hasn't responded and now i'm feeling like i really fucked up and crossed a boundary by doing that and it's gonna be super weird when i have to see him again next week.

This story ranked #2 in the last “What should I rewrite?” poll, so after rewriting the winning story, I decided this one deserved its time in the sun.

Also, @serrafew took the time to comment on that poll to say they were rooting for this story, and that blew my mind, so this rewrite is for them (sorry, I don’t know what your AO3 username is to dedicate it properly)! What’s truly wild is that, even though they said they’d been searching for Serra/Oswin fic for years, it didn’t really click for me until I went to AO3 to check: there are literally zero ‘fics on AO3 for this couple. I thought they were just saying they were hoping to see new stuff for the first time in ages—not telling me that there just wasn’t anything at all! ☹

Then again, considering Sain/Fiora only has five stories in the tag on AO3, I shouldn’t be surprised.

The original version of this story garnered 7 whole reviews, which may not sound like a lot, but even in 2012 it was an unprecedentedly high number—especially for an uncommon ship. I tried to keep all of the original comments in mind when rewriting this.

Per the comments: Serra was very convincing and in character and the reality of the post-war world was excellent (some didn’t make it, communication failed), but the story needed a little more fleshing out emotionally to feel complete, and there were a couple of expository lines of dialogue that needed to go.

As you can imagine, the original story was pretty bare bones and so in this rewrite I (once again) crafted a whole backstory for these characters and the life that they’ve been living since the war. It worked so well for “Waiting for the Rain” that doing the same thing here just felt natural.

The two biggest changes in this rewrite were:

There was a headhop from Oswin into Serra’s head right in the middle of the original story. This was intentionally done but made me feel batty on a reread (even though it did read as well-placed), so I switched the whole story into Oswin’s perspective.

The end of the story was originally Serra’s “Whatever would you and Lord Hector do without me?” line. A lot of reviewers mentioned how much they liked it so it felt bad to change, but the story changed too much to keep it in its original form. Instead, when Serra says this line it’s more subdued (almost a rhetorical question) and she follows it up with a question that helps echo the title of this story: “You know I will give it my all, don’t you?”

The original story felt a little meaningless from Oswin’s perspective; it was like he was there to deliver the bad news and listen to Serra be sad about how much she specifically has lost (and then we see that she just can’t take being left behind again and tells him how it’s going to be). While the foundation of their relationship felt pretty solid, and I love Serra-taking-charge in general, I knew I could do better in a rewrite by simply ensuring that one of the losses was something they ended up grieving together.

It's hard for me to explain what I think this added to the story, but I hope it made Oswin feel more compassionate and real, and that it made Serra and Oswin feel closer and more united. He understands some of her grief intimately and all the rest of it he witnessed in real time; he knows her parents abandoned her; he knows how she feels about being left behind and how she worries and this is what compels him to allow her to join him on the battlefield again.

Due to the backstory I concocted, I had the same problem I had with “Waiting for the Rain”: there were a few things I wanted to add to this story that I couldn’t find room for, and it was especially disappointing to not be able to find space to talk more about the loss of the children and how Serra and Oswin must have grieved (separately and together) or about the fact that Oswin should very well have been able to retire comfortably soon (at his age).

Alas.

The real tragedy here is in knowing the turn the war takes. Even if the two of them don’t die, we know they will be forced to grieve again soon.

As we go into the new year, I want to suggest that we make 2025 the year of commenting.

We all love fanfic - the escape, the emotional connection, the joy, the pain, the pleasure it brings us - and all that wouldn't be possible without authors pouring out their hearts and minds (and often their guts) onto the screen for us to read - but so often, out of shyness or awkwardness or for a hundred other reasons, we don't tell them how much their fics mean to us, or even simply that we've enjoyed them.

Recently, I've been making a real effort to comment more. As a writer, I know how much it means, and I realised that as a reader I was letting shyness get in the way of giving others what I would love to receive, so I've upped my game.

And I want to share how awesome it's been.

Sometimes, it's a simple exchange, just a one-off interaction, a simple 'I loved this, thank you' and no more. But on a couple of occasions recently, I've ended up having full conversations with authors across chapters, discussing their ideas and characters and plots in more detail - and let me tell you, that is so much fun!

The thing is, that author who wrote that fic that hits all your sweet spots - they're into the same stuff you are - so actually it's a really efficient way of getting talking to people you'll have something in common with, and of having something to talk about (the fic!) - and although it doesn't always, sometimes the conversation just builds from there.

In one case, this has been on a fic series that the author began 2 1/2 years ago, and I've been commenting as I've (rabidly) devoured the whole thing - and I know this point is made a lot, but it always bears repeating - the author was thrilled to know that someone new had found it and was loving it! We're enjoying my journey together, and now they're reading my fics and doing the same, and honestly I've got the biggest grin on my face as I see the notifications being flung back and forth and about six different conversation threads at any one time getting tangled between us! It's awesome!

In the other case, it was on an ongoing fic, and I had the pleasure of seeing how the author reacted to the things their readers (myself included) were most responsive to, giving us more of the things we liked. The number of later chapters on which my comments became 'you could have written this for me' - delicious! Again, we've had some great back and forth, they've read some of my fics, and now we're bouncing fresh ideas around together. It's awesome!

I have social anxiety, and even behind a username I feel self-conscious putting myself out there - but honestly, it's so worth the little twinge of fear, because sometimes great things come from it. So whether it's a simple 'extra kudos', a heart, an 'I loved this!', or a more in-depth analysis of the bits you liked best - next time you really enjoy a fic, leave a comment. What's the worst that could happen? (Clue - the answer is quite literally nothing, and the best that could happen is you make a friend!)

I got a bit of a random tumblr related question for you! Why do people who want you to know that it's specifically them, send you asks anonymously and then add something specific to them as a signature of sorts, instead of just asking without hiding their username? 🤔

I have absolutely nothing against people doing this and everyone should be free to do as they like! I'm just genuinely curious 😅

It just seems like a lot of extra effort and a change of people getting mistaken for other people, you know?

Hello love!!! Hmm I'm gonna try to answer this in a way that makes sense lol.

People have been doing this since probably before I joined tumblr almost ten years ago. I know back in the olden days, people would send anons because they didn't have accounts or didn't want to make an account. I don't think tumblr lets you do that anymore? Or perhaps I'm wrong and they never let you do that 🤷 I just vaguely remember seeing asks on other blogs from anons that didn't have tumblr accounts.

A lot of it, I think, is just for anonymity. People prefer to keep their blogs private for any number of reasons. Perhaps they're just shy or anxious and would prefer to not be known, or maybe they follow and interact using a side-blog but tumblr won't let you send asks as a side-blog, only from the main blog or anon (if that's enabled). (We literally just got the ability to reply as side blogs on posts so here's to hoping they'll give us the ability to send asks as side blogs soon). That being said, I think it's just a lot of anxiety or preference for remaining anonymous for their own personal reasons.

I don't mind either way. I know some people prefer it and that's fine with me. I get it, I hate being perceived sometimes (I'm looking at you fart anon when I find you it's over for you 😡). I haven't had established anons since my Kpop days (shudder) but I'm fine with however people want to chat.

So yeah, that's what I think it boils down to. Just personal preference and I'm sure they all have their reasons and that's okay. Definitely no pressure on them to have to share their reasons, either.

And again, lilly has a proven track record of using her main and only her main to address situations. I can confirm she has jack BLOCKED. Because frankly even jack’s username has us feeling panicky and anxious.

What she HAS done is make several well informed, researched and well worded statements that firmly states that she is against jack’s actions. I suggest you read them first to find out why she’s so mad. Why she’s STILL pissed. Heck, why IM still fucking pissed. You see…the whole jack controversy didn’t just hurt Jack. It hurt all of us who were pulled into it, I may be deviating from the facts but personally, I had to spend my little brother’s birthday filled with anxiety about what was happening in the community. Fuck, I lost 5 kg over the whole span of the situation. JACK IS NOT THE ONLY ONE HURT FROM THIS. KNOW THAT WELL.

2. Accusing Freddie of being fake

Firstly, you don’t tag lilly in your post because I assume you don’t want her to see it. You talked so big, you were firm, confident in your statement, which I can respect.

Unfortunately, once lilly replied to your post. All my tiny morsel of respect for you evaporated.

Mental health is not an excuse. Personally, I have high anxiety, an unidentified personality disorder to cope with and an unstable support group and home environment. But I will NEVER use that as an excuse. I can respect you standing up for your friend, but don’t make rash statements.

okay, mod speaking. So. I know I said I didn't want any drama on this blog.

BUT THE MOMENT I FOUND OUT MY FRIEND WAS STILL GETTING HATE ANNONS , IM GOING FULL ON DETECTIVE MODE!

This post is about @/unhinged-waterlilly, and oooh boy am I going to be getting so much hate for this. But. I am fine with hate asks. Just don't be a coward and don't put annon on. I am a minor, and if you decide to harass me about helping a friend, here we go.

My points against her:

1 she sent, and still sends hate annons (which hurts his mental health)

2 she accused jacks bf (freddy) as being fake

So. I saw a post a while back where "lily" said things about the jack situation, and I thought it was fair. UNTIL I REACHED THE PART WHERE SHE SAID THAT JACK DIDN'T DESERVE ANYTHING HE HAS look, I know that he hurt you with the AU , it hurt me too, but going so far to say that he doesn't deserve anything he has??? That's petty and mean.

Not to mention that he was in a shit mental state at the time he made the AU. Which obviously does not excuse anything, but it atleast explains it.

Now, this is just one of 3 hate annons Jack got this week. Yes, Jack is aware that he has hurt people, yes he is actively striving to better, so sending these hate annons won't help Jack not being , and I quote : "a depressed little attention seeking bitch" he has owned up to his mistakes, and I've advised him to put the explanation on his blog. And since he is try I ng to be better, he is focusing on himself, his mental health, and moving on.

BECAUSE MOVING ON IS HEALTHY

Me and jacks others moots are aware that no one forgot what he did , that he hurt people. But all that you can achieve by hurting him is a short adrenaline rush, that won't be worth it coke a few days. He is actively trying to become a better person

ALSO I am aware that since this is an annon, it's hard to prove this was actually lilly. But if you were to compare this to her other posts about Jack, you'd see it is very close.

ACUSSING FREDDY OF BEING FAKE:

There were multiple posts accusing Freddy, jacks bf, of not being a real person. Now. All of jacks moots know he is real, due to Jack making posts about him, and him telling us about him and what happened. And honestly? It's plausible that Freddy knew how to use tumblr , because it only took me a day to figure it out

Okay, and now this:

okay, let me get this straight. What jack did was wrong. We all agree on that , including Jack. But he was in a shit mental state while doing it, and he wasn't thinking clearly. Jack is trying to improve, Jack is trying to better himself, Jack is moving on and like a few posts say we all should.

But we can't truly move on 'till Jack stops getting hate, till we apologise and understand and hear out, not necessarily forgive his actions

But with the ask, I didn't click it so I answered with a; ?

They sent another ask with the same link saying this exact thing; 'I suggest you read it. Better to know who you interact with.'

She says this, but she fails to inform others that she's hate bombing and hurting Jack.

Woukd you rather rp with someone whose trying to change? Or someone whi is causing someone more harm?

I'll be getting hate for this. I know I will be harassed and sent hate annons. But it will be worth it. If he can move on, but you can't, if you hold on to anger, and he doesn't.
