Fun Fact: The original title of the sub story is “バカルテット (bakarutetto)”, with the words for “idiot (baka)” and “quartet”. 

Hanafuda (花札): Japanese playing cards (lit. flower cards) used for a variety of card games. 

Oicho-Kabu (おいちょかぶ): This is a traditional Japanese card game similar to the French card game Baccarat, as mentioned in the story.

Hinata: Ah, no fair! Oogami-senpai, you’re making your “own rules” again!

Kouga: Shaddup~ it doesn’t matter as long as I win! Look, my “Demon Wolf of Purgatory” has completely slaughtered your creature! It’s my win~

Hinata: No fair~! That’s not fair! Only cowards can be happy after winning like that~ You’re a disgrace to all samurai ~de gozaru!

Yuuta: Since when did you become a samurai? Don’t make such a fuss -- I can’t believe you’re getting all serious on a kid’s game~

Kouga: Huuh? What’d ya say, other twin!?

This is a card game arranged in a Japanese style with a hundred years of tradition; its origins lie in the land of my admiration, England...☆

The gentleman of all games who was born in London, the town of mist where Jack the Ripper wandered around! This is “way more” stimulatin’ than chess or cards!

Yuuta: Please don’t call me the “other twin”~, Oogami-senpai. You still can’t tell the difference between us?

Hinata: A hundred years of history sounds pretty shady -- this is something elementary kids play, right? I’ve lost interest, this is boring! It’s no fun when you’re losing!

Kouga: Say what? I even spent time tryin’ to teach you the rules!

Just tag along to my trainin’, ya bastard. I’ve left my instrument at the music shop for maintenance, so I’ve got time to spare!

Hinata: Even if you call it training, what’s the point of improving your skills for a card game? Isn’t it completely unrelated to being an idol?

Kouga: Shut up!

That redhead, y’know, the nasty first year kid who acts like he’s a bourgeois, has started the same card game lately.

We’re gonna have a match, so I’m trainin’ for that!

That bastard, he’s burnin’ his money to collect all the rare cards... But I’d feel totally ashamed of myself if I lost to that first year kid, y’know~?

I’m gonna teach him that you can’t win by simply havin’ strong cards; card games are all about usin’ your intelligence!

The outcome of the game depends on how well you use your “head” -- meanin’ I’m the strongest!

Hinata: What~? If we’re competing based on how smart we are, then don’t you think you’ve got no chance at winning, Oogami-senpai?

Yuuta: That redhead first year is Suou-kun in my class, right? He does pretty well academically, you know~ He's probably the top student in our year?

Kouga: Huuh? Whaddya mean? You lookin’ for a fight? Are you tryin’ to say I’m stupid? I’m always ready for a fight!

Rei: Geez, what is all this...? It’s been rather noisy for a while now, I can barely fall asleep.

Yuuta: Ah, good morning, Sakuma-senpai ♪

Hinata: It’s night already, though~ It looks like we were too focused on the card game and quite a lot of time has passed. Ahh~ my eyes are “bleary”.

Yuuta: I’ve got eye drops, Aniki. 

Hinata: Thanks, Yuuta-kun. Why’s the club room so dark...?

My eyes are tired after reading the explanations for the card game (flavour text)~!

Rei: Ohh, it seems you were playing a fun game. Allow me to partake as well; playing with you all makes me feel as though I’m young again...♪

Kouga: Hey~! Don’t you dare touch my cards with your dirty hands! Ya vampire bastard~ Your putrid smell will dirty my cards!

Rei: I’m not moulding, how rude... Although I have been damp because of the continuous rain.

I have a dehumidifier set up inside the coffin, therefore I am quite unconcerned, you see.

Kouga: Since there are different appliances in that coffin, I’ve got no idea if it’s old or new! Dammit, this is pissin’ me off!

Rei: Don’t get so agitated, Doggy. Perhaps you’re irritated due to the long, continuous rain. I’ll take you on a walk later, so you best be a good boy now.

*Yawn...* I’d like to do a brain exercise to shake off my sleepiness. Let’s see, I shall be your opponent for this so-called “card game” ♪

Kouga: Huuh? You’ve got guts -- card games are my home ground!

I’ll make you regret carelessly steppin’ inside my territory...!

Rei: You’re always so lively, aren’t you, Doggy...? Bravo, bravo.

Although for an elderly person such as myself, I don’t quite understand these sorts of complicated games as of late, you see~

Let us play an old-fashioned card game. Here, I’ve got playing cards in the coffin~

Kouga: Is that coffin connected to the fourth dimension or somethin’... It’s irritatin’ me ‘cause it’s so confusin’!

Rei: Doggy. I’ve got the “perfect” game for you. I’ll teach you the basics -- come over here as well, Aoi brothers ♪

Kouga: Huuh? “Perfect” for me, you say...?

Interestin’, who woulda known you’ve got such a rock ’n’ roll card game!

Rei: Indeed. Then, we’ll play as I explain the rules ♪

This card game is similar to one which was played in ancient Japan, “Oicho-kabu”[3]...♪

Kouga: Hey~ I know that! It’s similar to “Baccarat”, right? You chose it based on the name, didn’t you!?

Perfect for me? As if -- you’re just callin’ me stupid, dammit! I’m gonna kill ya~!

Rei: Aren’t you hasty, Doggy. Good, good. I don’t particularly dislike a scuffle; let’s get suited up with a light workout before the brain exercise~♪

It was tough, I have such a wide music library and listen to small portion of it within months, plus ¾ are soundtracks. I initially wanted to pick a song that sums up their relationship, but in the end I picked one that could sum up both of them. State of mine - Rise.

Kabu won Greaves respect mostly for his positive traits, man of his word, straightforward in conversations and his tendencies to speak by quotes amuses him greatly. It gives him an air of wisdom, still, he has a couple of things to learn, which is probably another reason Greaves sticks around, they both can learn from each other. He also likes his determination, people with a purpose are usually interesting challenges. The conversation they have are his favourite thing about him, even if Kabu tried multiple times to make him speak on subject he’d rather not discuss. He really likes the man’s mind.

⊗ for one thing my muse dislikes about yours.

The fact they are very much alike in certain aspects of their personality but most important in their ambitions. It’s simple, if Kabu is not directly in Greaves’ way for the moment, he will end up to be at some point, something that the handler is very aware of. Yet, as much as he worked to keep his distance, he started to like the man, there’s no turning back on this fact, especially when he took a bullet twice for him, so the longer it takes for that day to come, the better for both of them.

He should know better than to bring this subject back again, my answer will remain the same. You are not the only extremely stubborned man in the room Kabu-san. 

Bonus. I really admire Nobuto’s loyalty to you and your clan, I wouldn’t be surprise if I heard that you abuse it now and then.

Oh so many things, but the latest that comes in mind: I always wonder what it would be like to see you with an expression of helplessness… All I see is a disturbing reflection and a familiar bitter taste of déjà vu.

ϟ for a plot I think would be fun for your muse/our muses.

☞ Kabu saves Greaves’ ass. Usually he can handle most of the tricky situation with the help of Kent, his own men, but there could be that one time where they only had one solution to get him out of jeopardy and it’s asking for Kabu’s help. Which will totally makes Greaves both pissed (saved by a yakuza, like nope thanks) and thankful as well (because he’s not an idiot).

☞ A situation where Greaves can’t really talk out himself of Kabu’s question without either telling him the truth or lie to him, knowing that if the yakuza finds out he lied it would be a rupture in the thin trust they have towards each other.

☞ Greaves tells Kabu he trust him. They probably going to end up working together somehow, but they both need to trust the other’s men and ressources to succeed, so far they both did their best to not get into that situation and sort matters of their concerns by themselves. But for once they aim for a similar goal and they have to put their suspicion and caution on the side.

☞ Let’s face it, between Kabu and Greaves, the latter is the one who keeps a lot of information from the other, any situation where Kabu confronts him about some of his lie by omission would be interesting. I mean, Kabu considers Greaves as a friend, the handler should know better than to pretend he doesn’t feel the same towards him.

☞ Torture session. Did I tell you that Greaves enjoys a good torture session when he can’t get the information he needs in a more peaceful way? I mean, they are not the same as Kabu in that matter (a little more blood, burns, surgical, very much less sexual), but he has that side of him, would be fun if Kabu drops by in the middle of it and Greaves has a very normal conversation with him, all why torturing the guy he needs intel from.

☞ Relieve the sexual tension that exists between them when they both get at each other’s throat. Greaves tying up Kabu for a reason or vice versa.

☞ Reverse Reaper AU. Greaves and Kabu are not so different, except one is on the justice side of the law, the other is the head of a Yakuza clan. How long can Kabu enjoy watching the agent get in his way, until he decides he had enough. Decision, decision…

☞ Luck of the Reaper AU. Enemy Matsura clan seems to have taken an internal blow since the arrival of mixed race and estranged son as the right hand of the Oyabun. Perfect moment to get some of the men into his pocket and eat on the clan’s territory. Though, Kabu remains cautious, the new Wakagashira shouldn’t be underestimated, he seems to fit perfectly into his role and his charisma doesn’t go unnoticed.
