"Everything went wrong after David Bowie died" "everything went wrong after the Reformation"
Me, whose Metaphysics studies and medievalist interests have been heavily shaped by Dominicans: everything went wrong after Ockham et al. sustained the primacy of Will before Good in the nature of God.
#Theology#Christianity#Catholicism#it's funny because it's one of those discussions that sound extremely Byzantine#But if Good precedes Will in God then God's Will is primarily good#and its goodness must be discerned rationally by the creature#but if Will precedes Goodness then good is essentially and substantially arbitrary#God could have perfectly chosen to create a world where murder is always a good and heroic action#or where one's first duty is to make everyone's lives as miserable as possible#And that would be literally good and the good in such a world because God so willed it#such an understanding of the primacy of will on the ontological order leads to an understanding of reality as dominated by power#and in that scheme self-serving manipulations of religion and Scripture are not only easy but rationally justified#that's the where and why of Benedict XVI's motto being cooperatores veritatis#the cooperators or servants of truth#because Truth cannot be possesed and used#it can only be sought and followed after#in honesty and humility#which again ties back to the supremacy of good (and its transcendental truth) in the metaphysical order#EDIT: this is also where strain-the-mosquito-swallow-the-camel legalistic attitudes come from#Because if what's good is what is defined by the will of God as expressed in textual commands#then any comprehensive rational inquisitive reading is out of the question#and will-infused casuistry is in#Biblical literalism can only thrive in this sort of tradition#“where does it say in the Bible that [insert hyperspecific thing...”#but it's also the environment in which the kind of attitude denounced in pharisees#as sticking to precepts without embracing the moral good that sustains them#and so twisting said precepts to their own convenience

Silver doesn't need another father. He's already got one of those, technically, but the man turned out to be a weak, cowardly bastard who couldn't face his own problems let alone raise a child. The way he sees it, there's no need to set himself for more disappointment. He's got a roof over his head and food to eat, and that's far more than he could ever depend on in the last... however many years he'd been living on the streets. Lance and Clair are annoying as hell, but while he's training in the Dragon Den, he doesn't exactly have much room to complain. Not out loud, anyways.
Lance doesn't particularly want to be a dad either. He's already got too much responsibility on his plate as Champion, and this kid clearly needs so much more emotional support than he feels like he can provide. Simply convincing him to move into his guest room was enough of a struggle, and it only really worked because Lance had promised Silver he could "earn" his keep. What the hell is up with that, anyways? He's not sure what Silver's past looks like, and he's not about to go prying, but the bare minimum he can do is make sure he doesn't have to rough it out in the woods anymore. At least Clair seems to be having fun training him...
Clair is more than ready to be an aunt. The other two refuse to admit to caring for each other, but unlike them, she's not afraid of something as stupid as her emotions. The brat's slowly but surely been mellowing out during his training, and her idiot cousin has actually been taking care of himself for once in order to be a "good example." Silver has even caught on to calling Lance "old man" like she does, on account of those ugly-ass reading glasses the all-mighty Champion has to wear, and she couldn't be prouder. Best part is, she doesn't have to spend a dime except to treat the kid every so often! That's a win in her book if ever there was one.
#pokemon#pokemon hgss#hgss#rival silver#champion lance#gym leader clair#warning! lots of rambling in the tags >_>#love me some Father Figure Lance(TM) but the way i characterize him and silver doesn’t completely allow for it#they end up caring about each other deeply but as mentioned neither of them would feel comfortable labeling their dynamic as father/son#doesn't mean lance can't be silver's “old man” and silver can't be lance's “kid”#clair meanwhile is just delighted to have someone else to beat up on /affectionate. she's a big fan of tough love#she understands silver's not looking for a family and accepts it just fine but she's still going to adopt him in her head#the three of them are family now. he can't escape. he's going to be welcomed and taken care of So Help Her Arceus.#part of her likes to spoil silver in a way she never really got as a child#(though that doesn't mean she's ever going to go easy on him during training. if anything it makes her push him that much harder)#(this definitely doesn't make silver think she hates him or anything until lance explains she's Just Kinda Like That)#(she's actually much nicer to silver than most people---she's extremely assertive and has a very strong sense of justice)#(which makes her seem a bit bitchy to others at times (and they wouldn't necessarily be wrong))#((this is making me realize i need to just write a breakdown of my characterization for her tbh))#meanwhile lance tries to give him more freedom and space to breathe since that's what he always lacked growing up#he's still going to be there if silver ever asks but he also recognizes that trying to get too close too quickly will just scare him off#anyways#*vibrating in place with the intensity of a million suns* i am so normal about them. i love them a perfectly acceptable amount.

Oh, my sweet, naive, delusional Lazare. I think I finally understand. Why I sought you out, you and dear, self-effacing, unfortunate Prieur and poor, languishing, unrewarded Barère. You lived and died as men. And there's something so alluring, so mysterious in that. Because we became something else. You made us something else. And he... He's even more... different... Danton said he wasn't a real man. He was right: while you thought you killed a mediocre man who was your competition, you made him an Idea, a Symbol, a Weapon. His very Name an Invocation. You gave us immortality. It doesn't matter whether there's a heaven or a hell or nothing. You gave us so much more than the renown you feared. You made us gods. Dying for him. Dying with him. Shedding this flesh and blood that you clung to. We do live on in the centuries and in the heavens. In posterity. And people will always uncover your lies, and people will always fight for us.
P.S. See, I finally called you "Lazare". Be careful what you wish for.
#//and then gateau dragged him away while extremely disturbed by what he had just glimpsed#'now I understand how that letter to Daubigny got written but thank God it wasn't as easy back then to send as instantly!'#my dear colleagues#les grands hommes ne meurent point dans leur lit

comparing it to the venti black coffee really puts this into perspective, no one is getting several refils of those the same way people have been by panera's charged lemonade. too often i see the entirety of the blame put on the drinker when people on average, especially those not drinking coffee, aren't walking around with proper caffeine dosing knowledge. then the company gets away with it all
yep exactly. also very striking to shift blame off the company in that way, given the context that this occurred in a country where these products are legally required to have their calorie counts labelled and clearly displayed---the claim being that customers are entitled to that information in order to make decisions about their health and food consumption. surely caffeine content is also a matter of health, and more acutely for more people than calorie count!
#i do actually wonder if these suits will lead to better caffeine labelling requirements for other products (coffee and energy drinks &c)#but either way it's extremely easy to understand why someone would not assume a lemonade is that heavily caffeinated lmao

When the professor says the answers aren't meant to be long shortly after you write a full page for half a problem on an exam
#im pretty sure i got that half of the problem right but im extremely unsure if he meant for us to do all that or what#i did not get the second part of the question. im still very confused about it#idk. the exam didnt go well exactly but im pretty sure it went better than exam I. but exam I went pretty badly so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#i dont understand why he asked us to convert a system from cartesian to polar. like. this is grad DEs#sure thats a useful thing to be able to do but i feel like its weird as an exam question? maybe he meant for it to be easy??#but i couldnt make it work quickly enough and gave up. there was also a second part to the question#so i had to just described what i would do based on similar problems weve done in the past#seven stories#DEs

James corden coming back now this have we not suffered enough 😞
#I could say something about the entitlement usamericans feel to being able to move abroad anywhere in the world and be welcome but hey#from first hand experience I know they give near zero effort to actually understand local cultures either#anyway. I have multiple friends currently in the UK bc of this so I can’t be too hateful#but I also know a lot of extremely ignorant and obnoxious Americans here and I can only imagine it’ll get worse 🤣#<- anyway the uk is cooked anyway so hardly the most productive move#but usamericans looooove moving here bc it’s ‘easy’ Europe (no pesky foreign languages hey)#but very typical usamerican ethnocentrist exceptionalism mindset to be like. ah yes our election result has ramifications that’ll negtively#impact the whole world#let’s go move somewhere else where we’ll feel that negative repercussion the least#also whole world shows their asses and gives usamericans visas too easy it’s embarasing 😭😭😭#like I have friends in the Us who just don’t get it and keep trying to get me to move there and I’m like it’s not that easy ??#even if I wanted to ????#no concept at all that getting a visa can be hard 😭😭

im kinda worried about how jophie is gonna progress in the series, martin already has a habit of forgetting things about his charactes like their heights but i would also not be surprised if he forgot like actually important scenes with his characters like that one jophie dialogue on findjackwalten. im worried he's like completely lost the plot on how jenny and sophie should be
I never want to be needlessly mean, because I don't think it's ever very appropriate or helpful, but I can't lie this is honestly an insane thing to say. To me. Like idk. I don't think forgetting or misremembering something as innocuous as a character's height is indicative of a person being able to forget entire major elements of their story and thus completely mischaracterizing the main characters of their series.
Also, I guess you wouldn't know this, because I think it's only been brought up in spaces once or twice, but Martin does have character docs. He absolutely has means of keeping track of important info. Maybe not every minute detail is on them, and that's why slip ups happen, or maybe he just isn't constantly consulting his Character Bible when having off-the-cuff conversations with his friends about his OCs. Like. Its Ok. I'm sure when he gets to the actual in-series character writing he's going to be a little more thoughtful and attentive with regards to getting things right.
Also this 'mean and defensive' aspect of Sophie's character has absolutely been a part of her the entire time. I can't really back this up with Receipts or anything, but I really do think the way Martin's talked about her, like, historically, has evidenced this. Still, I think it's true that those more rough-around-the-edges aspects of Sophie have evolved over the years to become much larger parts of her character than they maybe were in the past. I'm sure that relative 'shyness' was something intended for her as well, but I think it's definitely transformed into something more firmly 'staunchly antisocial' than like, 'softhearted shygirl', y'know?
I just also think it's true that Martin personally finds it very funny when people misunderstand his characters, like old fanon characterization of Jack, and old fanon characterization of Sophie, and intentionally does not correct people, because he likes to imagine their surprise at seeing how the character actually behaves in the series. Which is like, fine. I agree with him, that's really fun and funny.
Also, like, this feels like a silly thing to point out, but specifically with regards to the Findjackwalten dialogue, it's like. I don't know. That dialogue doesn't dictate the character's personalities, the characters personalities dictated that dialogue, y'know? It's not like how, for the fandom, we learn more about how those characters behave from that piece of writing and our interpretation of them is changed by it. Like, even in a scenario where Martin forgets the specifics of what he had them say and how he had them interact in those scenes, or even if he manages to forget about those scenes' existence entirely, I don't think that's going to meaningfully change Sophie & Jenny as characters, because it was his understanding of them and their relationship that caused those scenes to be what they are, not the other way around.
#ask#i started this post kind of mean and i apologize. but honestly i felt like I kind of had to emphasize how out of left field this question-#-felt and still feels to me#Maybe i'm just so Locked In on files I have a strong enough understanding and familiarity that I trust something that extreme would not-#-happen#and maybe that just isn't true for other people in the community#butyeah i think this isn't something you have to worry about. anonymous person in my ask box#sleep easy. i believe sophie and jenny are very safe

So Dungeons and Daddies Season 2 is really just taking the average coming-of-age story and making it to every horrifying extreme, huh.
It is that moment in which you realize your parents don't know what they're doing any better than you do, and people present it like it's something comforting, but it's just even more terrifying because there really, really is no right answer. It's realizing that no, love isn't enough, sometimes you love your family and it just made everything worse. Everyone who came before you fucked things up even when they were trying to make things better, and unfucking everything just seems impossible, but not even trying is such a depressing option, and one your kids will never be able to forgive you for.
I have many feelings on this.
#i want to make a joke about how this is just like me. an adult#being made to solve extremely easy problems that other adults shouldn't have any issue with#but which feel insurmountable on an equal level with what these poor kids are going through#but it feels like it's kinda about that too#there's how scary acts with her 'no one will ever ever ever understand what i'm going through' thing#and then. well. hyperbole is a very ancient art indeed#anyways i just got to the point where these kids had some very good reasons to team up with willie fucking stampler of all people#even when they KNEW he sucked#and it all just smacked in the face like a dead fish#god i wish i could make stories as complicated and fucked at this#but i keep dithering between grimdark and happy ending#anyways. uh#dndads#dungeons and daddies#it's a great podcast. go watch it#if you liked eeaao ESPECIALLY watch it

why do so many people in amazon reviews want product instructions spelled out with words. most of the time when I see these complaints, adding text to the illustrated instructions wouldn't add any additional clarity.
I get that some people might process information better in the form of text but there comes a point when a matter is so simple that reading any amount of words is more complicated than seeing a visual. like if a coffee table arrives as a tabletop with four pre-drilled holes and four screw on legs what the fuck are these people doing leaving a review saying "garbage instructions don't explain anything". like how did they even figure out how to buy things online.
though I guess these are probably just shit-stirring "this is america and everything should be written in american" types.
#DISCLAIMER:#I'm talking about simple ass shit not actual complicated products with woefully inadequate directions#like the stuff that a normal person assembles without even looking at the directions#also mean opinion but it is extremely easy to understand the assembly for most ikea furniture#people who struggle seem to have general difficulty with impulse control + thinking forward in multiple steps + critical analysis#for example: having multiple sizes of screws but using whichever without thinking about it the moment they reach a step for adding screws#on the murika track btw this reminds me of how i was looking at mexican restaurants once#and saw all these 1 star reviews that just said “no english on menus only spanish”#i reported them all for hate speech. get fucked#wait also second disclaimer i have adhd and impulse control so i get having a hard time staying on track but for gods sake directions are#the perfect thing for me cause the process is already laid out and I dont gotta make my brain organize thoughts into steps on its own

Me this morning: happy, chill, sleepy, in my warm bed, all is right with the world
Me now, after talking to people about legal stuff that, if I fuck up even the tiniest bit in any way that's perceived as malicious, I'll suffer big huge consequences for: no longer chill and vibrating with anxiety, time to die
#not skeleton stuff#rambles#hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh#god i hate this#i need someone who's more qualified to do this for me instead#i don't understand shit#I've never done this before#so as you can imagine it would be EXTREMELY easy to fuck it up#and to top it off; i fucking hate phone calls#they make me nervous as all hell#is it ok if i disappeared into the shadow realm now#anything to escape this hell that I'm currently experiencing

i personally believe that deku is more likely to have vices than katsuki
#idkidkidk it's just the gut feel#they're both extremely stubborn just in different ways#but i think deku's a lot more susceptible to trying new things especially when he's under pressure#and i think his obsessive behavior makes him cling onto things easily --- it's easy for him to form habits whether it's good or bad#i also think deku's disregard for himself translates like. it wouldn't bother him as much that smoking is bad for him#he wouldnt care if the sleeping pills are bad for him down the line --- as long as it gets the job done for him to perform properly NOW#maybe unless mama inko or all might begs him to stop sjdfhbks#i feel like katsuki doesn't really give in that easily and is a bit rigid in that regard that he sticks to doing things his own way#i also think katsuki... tho equally as insane... kind of has a future-sense to him? IDK. like. he looks very much towards the ripple effect#like he understands the concept that if he unnecessarily ruins his body for immediate relief it won't be good in the long haul#and it's an overall decrease in performance eventually.#IDKIDKIDK my mind is stewing... brewing... thinking...#FORGIVE ME IF THE TAKE IS WRONG HBFAHAHAHAAH#this concept is a bit darker than i'd write so idk if i ever will but these are just my Thoughts#i talked so much again

i feel like a lot of people forget athena's role in the final case of dual destinies. did no one else feel deep-seated horror when it was leading up to and finally showed that athena had tried to help her mother in the only way she knew how considering her detachment from other humans...
#like. it's very easy to joke abt her randomly dropping european phrases in her words but it is evidently extremely important to her#how she interacts with people now; learning abt their cultures. their language. trying to understand how she'll fit in with all of that#so that she never accidentally harms someone again bc of a fundamental misunderstanding when she /can't/ read them as she usually does#as was the case with her mother who was. well. already dead#gently puts my head in my hands. i'm so tired so idk how my words are but you get what i mean#jestersvaguely#aa posting
